It's hard to write a negative review of an art center because I really value any place that helps…read morepeople access their creativity. But I have had such a comically bad experience with this place that I feel I should warn others. In January I found a Spring Session class I wanted to register for that was set to begin 3/15. It was in their catalog as a "New Class". However, when I went to their registration portal the class was not listed. The first time I called them, the receptionist said he didn't have access to the registration system and to call back later. The second time I called, they told me that they had added the class and I could register online--but I soon discovered it still wasn't listed. The third time I called they said they added the class but that I wouldn't be able to register until March 10th (which is when registration opens for LATE spring session, whereas this class was set to begin on March 15th, the early spring session). Huh? Registration is open for only five days before the class begins? I asked them to check again, and they called be back later that day and said the early spring session had been added. ...Nope, it definitely was still not in the system. Exasperated by their incompetence, I finally tracked down an email address for the instructor and emailed her directly. I didn't hear back, but soon after that the class showed up and I could finally register. So I did, and made an online payment. Two weeks later, I received an email with a receipt for a refund, with no explanation I assumed this meant the class had been cancelled, but no one called or emailed me to tell me that, and the refund never posted to my bank account. I had also never received any information about the class (materials list, curriculum, etc.) so I still currently have no idea what's happening. When I try to call them, their extension is "unavailable", as is the "operator" AND the "backup operator" that the system auto-routed me to. I really want this place to improve because they're one of the few organizations offering adult art classes in Oakland. But as is, it seems to be a bit of a mess.

I've studied with Carrie for about four months now, and she has supercharged my growth as a musician! She's a very kind and immensely knowledgeable drum teacher. I always look forward to seeing her, and having regular lessons provides the structure and accountability I need to make progress every week. It's been great having a professional on my side to make sense of the endless drum content on the internet these days. In the past few months, I've learned to read and write drumming notation to dissect and understand rhythms on a deeper level. We've transcribed many different songs together, and then for each groove, I write eight to ten variations to build a catalog of my own beats so I'm not just stuck playing other people's music. Every week, we work on foundational drumming techniques, patterns, and rudiments to keep my hands and feet in shape. On top of all that, Carrie is always open to whatever new thing I happen to be interested in and generously provides expert tips and resources for further exploration. More recently, I've gotten into recording and playing with other musicians in a band setting, and Carrie's feedback and ideas have been incredibly helpful and inspiring for that too. Overall, taking lessons with Carrie has been a great investment in my life as a drummer.

My daughter thoroughly enjoys the lessons (even when Carrie had to pivot from in-person to Zoom due to pandemic). It's been a little over a year, and I can sense more agility and strength now. He is always open to respond to any questions or doubts, and just a down to earth person. For anyone who is committed to practicing regularly, I recommend giving Alexys a try!

I was researching vocal coaches as I have never been a great singer but had always loved to sing and thought it would be a good time to try to step out of my comfort zone. I saw that Alexys offered free first time sessions and immediately thought it sounded great based on the good reviews. I walked into his place, and immediately did not feel welcome. I did the vocal exercises with him but it just felt like such a judgy environment that I was never relaxed or comfortable. I am not doubting Alexys talents as l'm sure he is a wonderful coach and likely an even better singer but the way I was treated did not sit well with me, even all of these years later. The vibes seemed like he only wanted to work with more established singers, which is fine if he made that clear somewhere on the website, then I would have never booked. Just didn't love his approach especially it being my first time trying something new like this, as vocal coaches are supposed to help you find your voice not stifle it further. I've since seen much more open and supportive vocal coaches online and have now realized how wrong his approach was. Again, I'm sure Alexys is talent and it is likely he was just having an off day as we all do, but it was just not a good vibe and if you'd like to work with more talented people please make that clear. Sending blessing to him still because we all have off days but a bit of clear communication makes all the difference. Leaving two stars instead of one since he did go through with the session despite him seeming like he did not want to, which I suppose is its own form of kindness.
