I have stayed at the Lodge 3 years in a row now with my family for a weekend fall color getaway. This year's trip was by far the worst. We stayed there the first weekend of October. I paid 300 a night for a hillside view room. When I checked in I was told all the rooms in the lodge are independently owned, like condos. Thought it was weird but no biggie. Got to the room and it was toward the end of the building with hardly a hillside view. I went to the front desk and asked to change rooms. I was told none of the rooms really had a hillside view and was told they were booked up. Ok fine. Went back to the room and it was in rough shape, big chip on toilet seat, dings and scratches all over the walls, mismatched paint on the walls where they tried to cover it up, and the room was roasting despite it being the first weekend of October. The thermostat on the wall did not work, but there was a note next to it saying to use the heating/cooling unit in the bedroom to control the room temp. Only problem is that cools the bedroom but not the rest of the place. Our whole stay my daughter slept on the pull out futon in the living room with a fan on her while I was freezing in the bedroom. The last straw and the main reason I am writing this review is that my wife, daughter and I hiked up the hillside. When we got almost to the top my daughter started feeling dizzy, weak and nauseous. She has a medical history of having low blood pressure. My wife took her to get a ride down to the bottom of the hill on the chairlift due to her medical issues and was not only dismissed by the girl working, she was basically called a liar and a scammer just trying to get a free ride. My daughter felt so bad and cried, all while having a medical issue. My wife and daughter were turned away by the lady working. A male co worker of the lady witnesses the interaction and apologized. He then gave them a ride to the bottom of the hill on a utility vehicle. I emailed the lodge about what happened, looking for them to address the indicent with the Terrible female employee but have not received a response for almost 2 weeks now. I am writing this review so that others are aware of our experience with this Family Friendly" resort. read more

if you're thinking about going to the spa here at this property... SAVE YOUR TIME & MONEY! horrible experience starts at the front desk by an older woman who directs you to the spa, unpleasantly though, like i was putting her out of her way to ask where to go. then arrive to the spa where is it very tiny, not clean at all, and the masseuse talked the ENTIRE time while i was just trying to relax and unwind. Stayed at the Giants Ridge Lodge for a weekend getaway. The rooms were a pleasant surprise. Recently remodeled, each room is more like an apartment. Each room has a fridge, kitchenette, large spa tub/shower, seating area, and fireplace. Sincerely impressed with the space and coziness of the rooms. However, we were disappointed in some of the service and what appears to be overall management of the hotel. The "new" toted arcade didn't have many working machines, the quarter machine didn't work, and when the bartender and front desk were asked their response was more snappy with attitude refusing to provide any. Apparently some drunks vandalized some flowers the night before. The hotel elected to place signs all over the building (excess of 10 signs) "shaming" the person. This seemed extremely tacky and made the majority feel bad for no reason. Ridiculous actions. The place seemed absolutely deserted. While there were 100+ vehicles, it seemed no entertainment was provided beyond 9PM. The bar closes at 11PM and while 15 people were enjoying a jukebox, management came into the bar and pulled the plug on the jukebox due to a single persons noise complaint. Thus, 15 people sat in silence at 10:20PM. Awkward. Hallways on stairs were gross. Had clearly not be cleaned or taken care of. $2.00 for coffee in lounge also seems excessive. Would stay again, however, seems like many opportunities to improve. read more

We stayed here with a group of other couples for a few nights and honestly I'm not one to leave a negative review unless there's a list of reasons to negatively impact things enough to feel the need. For as much as we paid per night, we felt it wouldn't hurt to throw in things like a bar of soap, or a few little extras...but that's not always going to be the case everywhere you go. Just maybe a Motel 6, lol! Where we got fed up was the fact that we never had hot water for our showers...and I'm talking, it was barely luke warm. Our showers were SOOO FAST due to the chill we got from them. The unit in our bedroom would not adjust the heat at all, so we had to sleep with the window cracked in February because it was so insanely hot, and I'm a person that typically sleeps with two blankets on at home. The microwave was such a headache to use every time, that the men where all scratching their heads over it! finally just gave up. The walls were full of patches and we had a mirror from Target in our bedroom and no other decorations. It was so insanely cheap, for $300/night. Coming into the lodge, there were no handicap doors, so everyone had their hands full and no way to try and open/hold the doors and we saw people drop things several times. One guy in our group even lost his keys, but luckily they were turned in at the front desk. And the chlorine in the pool/hot tub is strong enough that it'll burn off your skin (figuratively). It did put a hole in one gals suit though. These are the key facts but not all. It won't change as they will continue to book up I'm sure. But I'm a Yelp reader, so maybe it'll help at least one person decide whether or not it's worth your groups money. It wasn't worth ours IMO. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here this past weekend on a groupon for our anniversary. Our stay here was worth what we paid for our coupon, but without it I would have left feeling shorted. There were some pros to staying here, such as the full kitchen equipped for almost any meal you'd like to cook. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom had a great whirlpool in it. We were given everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The first night we went downstairs to the lounge and had a drink and a couple of appetizers. Their wings were better than expected, but the service was highly lacking- this pattern would follow for most of the weekend. We also hit up the pool and the hot tub; both were extremely clean and at the perfect temperature. My boyfriend loves to golf, so the next day he played at The Legends Course. He said it was gorgeous and really enjoyed it. The lodge also has a second course, The Quarry. It's more challenging and scenic. You can choose based on your skill level. I was supposed to go to the spa while he was there, but it is a separate entity. I was told she "might" be able to come in. The lodge was not helpful in the slightest. The spa was closed the entire time we were there. All weekend. So was the coffee shop and the convenience shop. The front desk had no idea what was going on, they were just like "it's closed, sorry." one guy said that to me with a mouth full of eggs. So I now had no pedicure, no coffee, and chunks of breakfast food in my hair. The pros and cons were 50/50 for me, but I like to feel pampered on vacation. It would be a good place to go with the guys and play a few rounds. read more

Like Carrie S, I also had a Groupon for a two night stay at The Lodge. Nice place in the middle of beautiful northern Minnesota. Not being a skier, have never been in a rush to visit this much advertised destination. All in all a good choice for a winter weekend get away. Easy check in, friendly and accomodating staff. The suite was comfortable for two, but slept four, which would be fine if you didn't plan to spend much time in the room, it also had a kitchenette equipped with the basics. There is a restaurant and coffee shop at the resort, didn't have a chance to try either. One of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in! There's a pool and hot tub to enjoy and if you choose to ski, a couple of chair lifts are quite close as this "condominium hotel" is located at the bottom of several ski runs. You're a short drive from just about anything else that isn't right at the resort. Located within an hour's drive of the adorable town of Ely where I would recommend a dog sled excursion. Chilly Dogs, just south of Ely was an unforgettable experience. read more

I stayed at the Lodge this past weekend in one of the villas. I love to cook and the kitchen had everything I needed. There was also a gorgeous view of Lake Wynne from the deck as well as piles of snow. It snowed 6 inches over the weekend. The skiing was great. We skied every run and and enjoyed them all, especially on Sunday afternoon when many of the weekenders had left. We relaxed in the Lodge hot tub after our day of skiing. We also liked that there is a coffee shop in the Lodge to get a morning latte. The Timbers lounge had some good music and was pretty busy with lots of people dancing. We also took a shuttle from the front of the Lodge to downtown Biwabik for the R Bar, which was very entertaining. Only in the Northwoods will you see a bachelorette party where the bride to be is wearing antlers and camo pants with her tutu! We also ate at Cazadores in Virginia and loved every delicious morsel! YUM! Can't wait for my next visit to the Lodge at Giants Ridge! read more

Very nice resort. I went here in January for a conference. AMBIANCE: Very nice cabin feel to it. Comes with a nice kitchen with microwave, electric stove, pots, pans, glassware and dinnerware. The TV in my room could use an upgrade to being a LCD though. AMENITIES: There's a ski and snowboard lodge/lift, golf course (out of season), hot tub and more. I only checked out the ski/snowboard lift. Nice course with different routes. There's 1 bar in the hotel and a restaurant. Service: Nothing to complain on. Cleaned up well. read more

I have stayed at Giants Ridge Lodge every winter for 12 years but this winter was not a good experience. They no longer provide housekeeping during your stay and they tell you to put your garbage in the hallway. I can stay at a Super 8 and they provide daily housekeeping. I paid over $200/night and had to come back from a day of skiing to dirty towels, unmade beds and full garbages. Not what I expect from a resort hotel. read more

This is what happens when my boyfriend drives me three and a half hours for a weekend getaway- We went down to the front desk because we were having issues with our heat. The girl at the front desk was too busy on her cell phone to help us. We stood at the counter for about ten minutes when she finally "tried" helping us, which we clearly annoyed her. This is a beautiful location and great venue for a wedding however the customer service at The Lodge is unwelcoming and left us feeling as if we will not come back. The front desk staff doesn't look up from their phones or computers when quests enter the lodge and are argumentative about room concerns. The manager screamed on the phone at one gal in our group when she was given a one night stay at the last minute rather than their "2 night minimum" like she had hoodwinked his employee or something?! It's expensive to stay and you can't even get a free cup of coffee in the lobby! read more

I had a Groupon for a stay at the Lodge which my husband and I turned into a weekend long 1st anniversary celebration. Our stay was pleasant. I can't stay outstanding but it was nice. Our room was tidy, clean and comfortable. I wish that they had a pullout bed instead of a murphy bed in the rooms for 4 because it took up valuable space and the furniture wasn't as comfy as I'd have liked. The kitchenette was nice to have but we got a bit of a kick out of what we had in the cupboards for dishes and gadgets. That definitely could use some attention. (we had 3 tea cups and 1 mug, 4 knives but 3 forks, for example) I had upgraded our room to one with a whirlpool and that was fabulous. I think that if you were there to ski, it would be even more worthwhile. I'd go back if the occasion presented itself! read more

We had a business event in Virginia, MN. Decided to stay here for the night. WOW! What a beautiful place. Had everything and anything we needed. Everyone was so friendly. Kelly in the bar was super. Nice gal. Very knowledgeable about the area. James at the front desk was super nice and helpful. The bar closes at 11:00 which is the only negative. We will go back for pleasure and even though we had a beautiful room on the parking lot side, we would love to try a room on the slope side. Nice place. Would recommend. read more

Used to stay at the sports dorm while on a ski team, and am super disappointed they tore it down...terrible commitment to the high school, college, etc. athletes and teams that have supported you. Wish people would stop going here for that alone...they apparently are going to build a new 'event center' in place of the always-popular, affordable, and convenient sports dorm. With that said, this review is based mostly on the Lodge itself, not giant's ridge.. Loved the cross country trails, but the lodge was far overpriced for an average hotel. Definitely understaffed, the TV looked like something from the 1980s (thick but not big screen, low resolution, and hummed loudly), and the supposedly 2-bedroom condo was about the size of a normal hotel room...very basic, small bedrooms with a bathroom thrown to the side. Kitchenette was nice, definitely a plus. Not fully equipped, but good enough for a few days of cooking to save you from going to the (extremely overpriced and poor quality) Lodge restaurant. All in all, not planning on staying here again. I'll be back at the Ridge - the skiing is fantastic for cross country and alpine, with reliable snow - but don't want to support their Lodge after seeing their lack of support for teams in the sports dorm as well as staying here myself. read more

The room was awesome and comfortable. Spent the money to stay in a room vs. a tent on a raining day. The room was awesome. The sleeping giant which it is in the hotel was gross u could tell the food was microwaved and for the walleye dinner you expect it not be microwaved. They charged us 24 bucks for a walleye dinner for it to be microwaved. My potatoes was hot like burning fire on the outside and cold on the inside. My husband's was the same. The restaurant inside the hotel was the only thing open for breakfast but I don't think we will be going there. All in all the hotel was awesome besides the restaurant. After we ate we looked into the other restaurant onsite, it looked better. Of course they were doing renovations so game room was down. The hot tub was nice, but I don't think the pool was heated. All in the all the room was the best part. read more

My husband and I got one of their smaller rooms because it was only the 2 of us for a wedding. Air conditioner didn't work...so hot in the room...no window (is that legal to sell a room like that) and no phone to call about the air conditioner not working. Front desk didnt even care the next morning when we mentioned it. Don't think I will ever go back. read more
