Room left a lot to be desired. Paid $200 for the smallest lakefront room and was not worth it. Bedding was clean; however, room was not and maintenance was poor. Cobwebs in most corners and up the walls behind doors, dirty coffee pot, coffee splattered on window sill. Weatherstripping separated from door and daylight coming through, pine trim not sealed before painted so the sap is coming through, drywall coming apart in multiple areas, shower caulk and drywall separated from the shower, 1/3 of the bathroom ceiling was patched and repainted leaving the rest to not match, sloppy painting and patch not painted. Had a frig and microwave but lacking typical amenities like iron, ironing board, alarm clock and outlets. Literally one outlet available and none by the bed. TV great for the deaf because ability to turn off closed captioning was disabled. See pics for examples. I'd suggest finding other lodging. Perhaps rooms other than 125 are better. While this is close to town, there is a motel and hotel in town that are comparable to the cute outside of Beach Inn Motel.

Check-in was a breeze, the owners are very accommodating. As we were very late booking, we got one of the unrenovated rooms, which yes, is dated, but they were clean. And we were barely in the room at all. Just showered and slept, as Munising is all about being outside. The rest of the motel grounds are super chill, with plenty of space to spread out outside, a cool dog, and interesting folks to chat with. The best part is that it's walking distance, a couple blocks, to the brew pubs and such in downtown Munising, so was the perfect location. This place is a legend amongst those who make the voyage to Munising, Michigan year after year for the variety of outdoor sites and activities. After being under the same ownership for decades, suffering a fire, and being purchased by a lovely couple on a mission - Scotty's is being given some much needed TLC and returned to it's former glory. Although some elements of this 50s/60s time capsule are being removed (think old carpet, crumbling plaster) the staples that bring the old school vintage charm are being protected, salvaged and honored by Tom, his wife, and their handsome little Bull Terrier. The owners are fabulous hosts, one of the best features of a motel vs a hotel - you make friends! They had an extra key for us, extra towels and an extra mini-fridge waiting for us based on the length of our stay and the fact that many restaurants are closed this time of year. We were offered an outdoor fire ring as well as access to a little greenhouse for a BOYB Happy Hour which was INCREDIBLE. We stayed up late playing board games and enjoyed the layout and space of the motel generally. The rooms have been given some serious love (still in progress for some rooms). The renovated rooms are CLEAN, SAFE, well-stocked with the necessities, and extremely comfortable. There will be no other place we stay in Munising. Scotty's or BUST. We heard another camper (with another group) played the sax one evening and it was very soothing with the sound of the lake lapping the shoreline. The camp host kept plenty of air fresheners in all the vault toilets. They were super clean and very pleasant smelling for vault toilets. The campground overall was super well kept.

I discovered Bay Furnace through the app on my phone called Campendium. Campendium was very helpful in assisting me finding worthwhile campsites along my 2021 summer road trip. Although Bay Furnace Campground is technically located in the town of Munising, Michigan, it's actually situated in the charming town of Christmas, MI. Though when I was here visiting back in the month of May...there wasn't anything Christmas(y) about the town, lol. Still, the main purpose for me being in Munising....was to explore the scenic coastal landscape along the shores of Lake Superior. Overall this campground is set just outside Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and a host of beautiful waterfalls. After spending a good portion of my day driving along Pictured Rocks NL...I couldn't find any affordable accommodations in Munising. The next best thing for myself was camping. I had a tent with me and showed up here to Bay Furnace Campground. It was early evening when I pulled up to the entrance area. The instructions stated that Bay Furnace accepts about half reservations at recreation.gov and half on a first come, first served basis. I was a little nervous about not finding a campsite when I started driving throughout the grounds. It was late in the day on a Thursday just at the start of the summer vacation travel season, yet I spotted an unoccupied site right near the entrance and backed my car into the site. Yah, I was good for the evening! As per normal policy...when you arrive, you pick a campsite and then fill out a slip with your payment and drop it into a safety box. Then the campsite is yours and you can start constructing your tent and getting settled in. It was $22 per night. They accept cash and checks, though no credit cards. Checks must be made out to RRM, Inc. and need to include your Drivers License and License Plate Numbers. There are about 50 non-electric campsites on the grounds each with a fire-pit and picnic table. Check-In time is 2pm and Check-Out time is 11am. Honestly, I really lucked out probably grabbing the 50th and last site. Because in general, throughout this UP section of Michigan I had trouble discovering on a whim available campgrounds that weren't full. I was grateful to be here. Unfortunately there weren't any showers to use, but still...I had cell phone reception and each campsite was really spacious. I felt like I had plenty of privacy being in the woods without anyone around. Two extra notes I'd like to mention... I didn't have plans for the night and across the street from Bay Furnace was the Kewadin Christmas Casino. So...after setting up my tent and washing up...I took a short 15 minute walk outside the campground and went inside the casino and played some blackjack for an hour. It was sort of a pleasant change of pace from driving and picture taking all around the UP, to all of a sudden sitting down and playing blackjack at a random casino. Returning back to my campsite, there was a terrific little overlook vista point section just to the side of the entrance where I sat down on the shore of Lake Superior and admired the colorful sunset. It was a pleasant way to end my day. This panoramic coastline beach shore can't be missed when you're walking towards the facilities area. I highly recommend hanging out here when the sun begins to fade. Although I am a big outdoorsy type of person who loves being among nature...I just really wanted this opportunity to highlight Bay Furnace Camp and Picnic Grounds. Munising, Michigan is well known for its scenic waterfalls combined with picturesque vantage points of Lake Superior that makes this section of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan quite popular. But for those tourists who don't mind setting up camp among quiet surroundings with basic amenities, then I believe you will appreciate choosing to stay at Bay Furnace Campground in the heart of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

This place was just a great as described by others. The cozy log cabin feel was so inviting. Our room was clean and homey - such a pleasure to discover after arriving in the middle of the night. There's a real sense of personal charm - even family members of the owner who run the restaurant next door. So much better than any chain motel we stayed in on our trip. The restaurant serves the UP favorite - pasties. I totally recommend this place for travelers looking for a great deal and a warm atmosphere.

So where do I begin, first off Its overcrowded, I mean, the campground owners must be desperate for money because they have this place packed, you can pretty much smell your neighbors farts your so close to the next camper, They pack them in here like sardines thats for sure. And garbage all over the place, the beaches I am sure at one time were pristine, but this place contributes to the trash on the beach and blowing all over the place, most the trash cans were full and the facilities are disgusting. Flies all over, worst I have seen then anywhere else in the UP. I went to go use the showers and they both sucked, the small one, was filthy, I don't think they clean them on the weekends, and the showers don't have any curtains, in any of them, so going to shower with grand kids is difficult at best, and the roof of the inside of the building is covered with dead flies and moths and spiders crawling all over the place, and it looks like they painted over them in an attempt to make it look nice. Made me want to vomit. My grand kids could not be convinced to use this one more then once and I will never come back to this campground again with them, and on that note the other shower building looks nice, but its a joke, whoever spent the money to build this thing got took, when you walk up at night the lights are literally shorting out making a buzz noise like the whole building might catch on fire, then when you go inside it looks really nice and new, but that is deceiving! The shower is ridiculous, its big enough to wash an elephant, and the water pressure is a joke, you got room in the shower to have a party with a full on DJ but there is no water pressure, I feel like this may be a gay bath house of some sort, based on some of the drunken riff raff we saw in this place. Why so much room for activities??? Worst part the drain was plugged or slow and the water pooled in half of them, so you literally standing in some one else waste water while it feels like you're getting pissed on and again did I mention that there is no water pressure. The only plus side of this whole place was the view, it's pretty nice when you dont have a million people right in front of you. So much traffic, I thought I saw a sign that said no ORV's but thats all I saw was people with loud smelly exhausts on off road vehicles cruising thru at all hours of the night and day. Terrible. Do not recommend.
