Practical, informative, hands-on, single flash photography class!…read more My friend and I want to learn how to use single off-camera flash to enhance our photography skills. I checked around the Irvine/LA area. Most classes don't offer this type of class, and if they do, the classes are not held often. I found Peter Phun Photography through Yelp, and decided to give a shot and contacted Peter. Immediately, he was able to arrange the workshop the following weekend! Wow. The class was held at Back to the Grind: 4 hour total. The first 2 hours was presentation, and then it was hands-on practice with models. For a class less than 5 people, he actually had 2 models came in, and had 3 settings. He was patient in explaining the principles and allowed us to play around. I didn't have a camera, and Peter lent me his Canon - very thoughtful and kind. Just for a comparison: another friend took a studio lighting class in the Bay Area. There were at least 8 people, 1 studio setup, 1 model, and hardly any private time to shoot with the model. I highly recommend taking Peter's class.

I moved up from my point-n-shoot camera to a beautiful DSLR this year. I get it home and have no…read moreidea what to do with it, so I, like most of you, I set it on "AUTO" and start shooting. But I knew I could do better and get more out of my camera. Peter Phun is a professional photographer who used to work at The Press Enterprise. I'm a big fan of his work. When I saw he was having a basic DSLR class for beginners, I jumped on the opportunity. I took his one-day basic DSLR class and came away understanding the basics of how my amazing camera works, tips on photographing people, how to use available light, how to shoot things in motion and how to organize my photos once I got home. The class consisted of a "classroom" portion held at a coffee house in Riverside, a field portion shot at a motocross track, and a session with a free trial of Lightroom 4, where you learn how to organize and edit photos. Did you ever give any thought as to how you should name and organize photos once you download them? Peter will help you get set up so you can find photos easily. Peter is a patient, compassionate teacher who won't criticize you for not doing basic things you really should have done. Like reading the manual and studying the discs that came with your camera. I didn't, but he pretended not to notice. He also evaluates your interests and makes specific equipment suggestions. For me, it was a fast aperture 50mm lens. Also check out Peter's blog, where you will get lots of great tips from him and his fellow professionals on technique. Be sure to read the comments from other pros. http://peterphun.com/blog/ I'm looking forward to more basic classes from Peter. I highly recommend him if you are not a professional, but want to do more with that beautiful camera you bought and don't really know what to do with.

Buyer Beware!! I signed up for one class from his 4 class workshop. I communicated via email . I…read moreinformed him that I wanted to sign up just for one class( I wanted to make sure it was something I would continue) He at no point stated I needed to sign up for all four classes. He emailed me the invoice for the class. I emailed him few days later explaining to him I would not be able to attend the first class due to mandatory work training , he agreed I can attend the second class. Stephen emailed me two days before the class and stated it was the last day to pay for the remaining of the classes, I emailed him back asking several question, which he replied very unprofessional. It sounded like he wanted us to pay for all four classes but if you go to his Facebook account, his description of the classes are not clear. When I showed up to the one class, he right away made it known he was irritated and starting saying "I was just jerking around" "you emailed 14 times back and forth" " I should be committed like he is" He made me feel very uncomfortable. I told him I would sign up for the rest of the classes if he allowed it and he stated " no, I have cut off times" I stayed and it was just myself and another student. The whole time he showed a slide show and addressed the other student. I felt like he did not acknowledge, like I wasn't even there. The class was advertised for 90 minutes but it ended in 60 min. The place is not clean, it is very cluttered. The way he runs his business is not professional. Best 45 dollars spent to find out he is not worth paying for more classes. Beware!!!

Our guide and instructor took our small group into places I never would have imagined inside the Preserve. While I was expecting to have a little bit of our time focused on the educational aspects of post-production, it turned out that we were split our time about 50-50 between editing and going out into the field and taking photos which was perfect for me. The small class size provided ample one-on-one mentoring with a certified instructor who was able to teach us many of the best-practices on image handling and post processing. Not only did I come back with some great images to send to the print shop and share with my family and friends on social media, but I returned with new editing skills and a fresh workflow combining LightRoom with Photoshop. Simply put it was an amazing trip, I learned more in 5 days than I had in the last year of taking classes and weekend workshops. The whole experience was customized to the needs of the group, starting with the phone calls before the trip to discuss what I wanted to accomplish, through adjusting the schedule while we were in the Preserve, and the follow-up calls afterwords. Small group size, 1 on 1 mentoring, trip tailored to the individual needs and desires of our group, instructor knew the area extremely well including knowing what time of day to be where to capture the right light on the scenes. Still riding the photo high from a trip that ended a month ago. Can't wait to attend my next expedition, probably one of the Utah trips whether it's Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, or Grand Staircase-Escalante. And I'm definitely going back to the Mojave National Preserve.
