I was completing this course, including the open water portion, all in December; I was eager to get certified in a New England winter, and Dave matched that energy. From the moment you meet Dave, his enthusiasm for SCUBA is palpable. Throughout long class days, Dave is cracking jokes, telling anecdotes and getting you excited about the skill you're about to have, all while answering a barrage of questions. In the water, he is professional, vigilant, and in his element. He exudes an air of calm and control, allowing you to confidently perform skills that would otherwise be terrifying or disorienting- like removing your goggles or respirator in 45 degree water. Beyond that, the staff is equally as knowledgeable and the community they foster is incredibly warm and welcoming. Even on my open water dives where I thought it was just going to be myself and Dave, I ended up meeting more people who tagged along just because they wanted to dive. I'd be hard pressed to find a more inviting community that is excited to pass the knowledge along to others. I was looking for an indoor pool in the Mt Washington area and found White Mountain Center. Called…read moreand was told they were open 7 days, and were open until 9. If you look at this site, you'll see they're open until 9. They're not. Don't bother coming to this pool. The hours are wrong, and if you show up, as I did today at 5:20, you'll be told they aren't open unless you're a hotel guest or have a monthly membership. Ok, that was rather a shocker because I've been there before after 5, and was able to pay and get the passcode. Well, that was a drag. A waste of a drive. I guess it's not so bad, because half the time the chlorine smell is overwhelming, and the other half, the light switch to the women's changing room doesn't work so you have to leave the door to the pool open.

Actual equipment was ok, a bit willy-nilly jumbled up and crowded together though, and the general vibe perhaps as a result of the architecture was somewhat cold and impersonal despite the small-town locale. I was relieved to see that they did have at least two Keiser stationary bikes, which are increasingly rare these days as most gyms get suckered into the big lumbering fancy LOOKING bikes with the flashy screens and video-game simulations, that have lousy ergonomics making you feel like you're pedaling a toy not a real bike. They do have some Concept rowers at least, which is a good sign. Overall I'd say it's a fairly decent Y except for the sauna, which was sorely disappointing in that despite being brand new looking and quite pleasant/spacious, was being run at some geriatric 150-160 degrees tops. Oh and they close way the hell too early on weekends: 5pm on Saturday, 4pm on Sunday. Only slightly less lousy than my home Y in Cambridge (4pm both days). Argh!

I joined mainly for the hot tub, which has been closed with no solution for much of that time. While here, I was recruited by multiple staff to work here. When I applied, simply to help with pool closures and not because I needed a job, I never heard back. I didn't really use my membership over the summer, and returned to find a hot tub that was still closed and a basketball court that is half closed, with a very slow timeline for repair. Also, the basketball court area has no air flow and is dangerous for use. Have had issues with staff and their lack of communication the whole time. When I raised my concerns and cited my reasons for canceling my membership, their coo sent an email before having his first cup of coffee in the morning, or so it seemed, showing zero effort to resolve issues. I wish them the best and hope they find experienced and skilled staff that can lead them in the right direction. I won't be back and don't recommend it, but you can check it out. Value wise, it is significantly more expensive than other options in the area, especially with so many of their amenities out of commission. It is probably also worth mentioning that I sponsored their March Madness Pizza Party and Mini Golf/Ice Cream field trip.

It's less like a place you go in the summer, and more like a family. I cannot say enough good about this place. I attended for 9 summers and only wish I could still go back every year. In addition to the wide range of activities, the people are great and the food is pretty fantastic, particularly when compared to the stuff being served up at other summer camps. A few of the activities offered to campers: Archery, rowing, wind surfing, sailing, swimming, photography, ceramics, leather craft, copper enameling, silver craft, basketball, soccer, ropes course, water skiing, canoeing, theater, tennis, and more. Campers can attend for 2-week sessions, up to a total of 8 weeks. At the end of the second and fourth sessions, there's a giant themed banquet that is tons of fun. Apply early as the camp roster is usually full for the next summer by December.

Camp Nokomis is on Lake Winnipesaukee, so the reason I went there was to have a good camp experience and swim in the lake. Boy was I wrong. Although I was on my towns swim team at the time, and had much swimming experience, I only made it into the level one swim class, and not only did I have to have swim class with girls much younger than I, it made me unable to swim in the lake!!! It was a HUGE disappointment. This left me with nothing to do during free time, and left me bored as well as homesick. Not only that, but many of the activities I signed up for I did not enjoy, especially kayaking, because we were not really kayaking, but merely learning how to save ourselves if the kayaks happen to flip over, which is highly unlikely. I will not go into too many details, but just no that I do not recommend camp Nokomis, and I was not the only one there who had a bad time,v
