What a birthday meal…read more Having been advised by various friends and family that this was the place to have a celebratory meal, we headed to 60 Hope Street with high hopes, all of which were matched. Visiting on a Sunday evening, the service and atmosphere was very light any cheery, with no sense of being rushed at any point. We were sat by the window and presented with a bottle of champagne, ordered by my lovely parents, though the card ordered to go alongside didn't appear! It was poured straight away and kept chilled throughout the meal, with our glasses being topped up whenever required. Taking in our surroundings, we felt very much at home - it feels grand, but not in your face. Clean lines are the name of the game, much like the London Carriage Works attached to the Hope Street Hotel. Special, but not overfacing. We tucked into a 3 course Winter menu, with no sign of the dreaded meat and two veg Christmas meal that many restaurants end up relying on at this time of year. I started with scallops, perfectly cooked, followed by lamb. For dessert it was chocolate and cherry, presented with Happy Birthday in chocolate writing; I'm a sucker for the details. Upon leaving, all staff wished me a happy birthday and I left feeling very special and looked after. Well done 60 Hope Street, and keep up the great work. I'm sure I'll come again soon.

"60 hope street??? Really???? Can you imagine if Alma de cuba was called "Seel street" or San Carlo's in manchester, "40 King street"???? Wasn't there a loved one, or something else the owner was fond of? Anywho, once you get past the name I mean what is in a name I suppose, the place is A-ok. With its Georgian entrance the restaurant, encompasses a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the decor is somewhat simplistic compared to other options in the area however the food rules the roast in my book in a restaurant, and here...just like the place itself, it is A-ok. The A la carte menu is accompanied by a daily changing special menu, an idea which I quite like. The food is cooked using local produce which is always a good sign and thus the menu changes with the seasons. Being near the water naturally you expect seafood and hey presto the menu offers a variety of fish dishes. If you have room left in the tank for a dessert and aren't too bothered about teh calories you can always go for teh signature dish 'Deep Fried Jam Sandwich with Carnation Milk Ice Cream'. I did, and must say it was niceeeeeeeeeeee oh yayyy.

The Hanover Street Social came recommended by a friend of a friend, so I put in for a booking on the Sunday of the last bank holiday. They serve breakfast before noon on Sundays, so my reservation was for 12.30, hoping to miss the Sunday roast crush. Oddly, the place was empty when I arrived, though the place filled up quickly as my visit went along. I ordered a Mersey Sunset drink that came out in a comically large glass with umbrella. My argument was that I was never going to find this elsewhere outside of Merseyside. I ordered the beef Sunday roast, which came with the most gloriously crispy potatoes and parsnips.I took one star off because the beef was chewier and tougher than I'd expect. For pudding, they had a gluten-free cheesecake not on the menu that I'm glad I asked about. The roast and dessert came out looking amazing. For two courses at £17.95, I had a nicer experience than I did at a fancy place in Glasgow and for less than a single main. Wait staff at the Social were fantastic: Northern hospitality for you! My photos are not attaching reliably to my review. If you can't see them, check them out at the top of the restaurant's page on the Yelp app.

This is not generally due to the quality food it offers and more to the price, with a party of four being able to dine for roughly ten pounds (there's not too much wrong with what they serve, it's what you'd expect for less than three quid). Whilst I've never been that impressed with the food on offer at lunchtime, I have been fortunate enough to attend Left Bank of an evening and sample its finer cuisine on the menu. On both occasions, I have visited the restaurant for football team end-of-season dos and have found that they can easily accommodate big groups in the upstairs room, which offers a good space as well as separation from the quieter diners downstairs. The food was delicious and well presented (the steak I had was unrecognisable from the meat in the steak sandwich available on the lunchtime menu) but one point I would make is that the portions were quite small, suggesting that they rely on you ordering the full three courses in order to have your appetite fully satisfied, which I was not (who wants all that food soaking up the alcohol you're consuming?) The taste more than made up for the size though and on both occasions, the large group of rowdy lads (myself included) left feeling very happy (if a little drunk), certain to return again.

Necessity, we are always told, is the mother of invention and the credit crunch (or 'moneygeddon'…read moreas Charlie Brooker rebranded the whole thing) has birthed the dynamo-success of this eatery. That this place is absolutely packed of a lunchtime owes little to the quality of the food - which is somewhere between airport canteen and city-centre branch of Bella Italia standard - but rather to the £2.50 lunchtime offer. The menu includes options ranging from steak sandwich and chips (which is literally only steak in a half baguette; no salad, no sauce) to pesto pasta and chicken caesar salads. Lunch is well worth it, particularly as you would struggle to get a pre-packed sandwich or pasta-salad from nearby Waitrose for any less, but also because the surroundings are cool and clean, the staff are genial and the management are really accommodating - no problem squeezing you in, even if you have to wait a few minutes. Drinks are pretty expensive with a soft drink (poured from a multipack bottle - I've seen them do it) costing almost as much as the meal itself. I can't say anything of the evening menu, as I've never visited here except of a lunchtime, but I have heard the quality is a definite improvement on the workaday midday grub.

The menu is a mixture of Modern European and British food which isn't too pricey for the calibre of restaurant - a main meal will set you back about £16. However there are plenty of fixed price meals with multiple courses that are excellent value, so even if you're feeling a little light in the pocket department you can still enjoy a highly accolade restaurant. The service here is really top notch, it can occasionally be a little slow but it's friendly and attentive and that's what ultimately matters. Even the owner gets involved which is always a good sign. There's a wonderful atmosphere and the decor is more than gorgeous, but it's the food that's the star here, especially the crispy squid starter with chilli sauce and pak choi. Mouthwatering deliciousness. There's no particular food 'theme' here other than painfully hip and modern, hence why you'll find gnocchi and mushrooms accompanying turbot on the same menu, but I loved all the combinations. The portions aren't massive as you'd expect from a restaurant like this, but they're certainly sufficient enough. The unhurried ambience really adds to the quality of the place and you feel like you can relax, and the staff seem to genuinely want to listen to you. The desserts are stunning as well. All in all, all boxes ticked - attention to detail here is paramount and that's reflected in the quality.

Sometimes this French style place is somewhere you want to shout about, other times it's somewhere you want to shout AT. What keeps me coming back is the fact that when it's good, it's really good. The atmosphere is great, very ambient, and the menu always looks very classy but doesn't always live up to its description. The one quality that's never varied however is that of the moules marinier, mussels which are surely to die for. Or at least, make a special journey for. Sometimes accompaniments can be a little undercooked, and depending on your mood the jovial, jokey and bantering staff can either be the perfect tonic or your worst enemy. It's not the most efficient of service but most of the times I've stopped by I've felt well looked after. Despite its troubled past (problems with chefs scarpering with a great deal of moolah), Auberge does come up trumps when it wants to. A frequently changing menu keeps things really fresh, and the staff do have a lot of advice to offer about the menu. While the wine list can be a little pricey you can often get special offers if you look in the right places, so you might be able to get your money's worth. All in all a bit of a Gemini of a restaurant, but can be worth the risk...

It was absolutely packed when we got there and we had to wait 5 mins for a table which was no problem. However, although staff were nice, service was verrrry slow. When it came to ordering food they had ran out of what we wanted even though it was still only 12pm on a Sunday. We ordered some random bits and bobs from the deli and a chorizo hash which was recommended by the waiter. The deli food was ok but that's about it. One of the items was a 'meal' which consisted of the smallest amount of pork pie and some salad for about £9!! The chorizo hash (eventually) came and was incredibly oily with what can only be described as a deep fried egg on top. Probably wouldn't go back from this experience and wouldn't recommend to others really. Maybe it was just a bad experience due to numbers of customers. I understand that it was a busy Sunday and standards may slip and things may take a little longer, but really, this place should consider reducing the number of tables by 1 or 2.
