My husband had Bangers & Mash with crispy onions and my teenage children had yummy burgers. They have two lovely gardens and the Inn itself is16th Century with thick stone walls, slate floors and a really relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Children are welcome in the dining areas and the garden as well as friendly dogs. If you like Sticky Toffee Pudding -- my absolute favourite pudding -- then get it here. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. The main entrance into the building is built to resemble a stage coach with seating inside it, to the rear, adjoining the building there is a giant boot just like the one out of the nursery rhyme about the old woman who lived in a shoe which houses a slide for the children and adults if you can fit down it!!!! This pub is a MUST for a visit, the owners are very friendly and will tell you the history of the establishment and give you a tour of the various different rooms.

Beautiful location and countryside views....just about 3mins away by foot. And this fantastic pub/restaurant is owned by the same lovely couple, Catherine and Paul. There is a - more formal - restaurant section and the bar/pub section, where dogs are very welcome. And that's where we dined for two nights. It's a cosy, classic and local pub, full of atmosphere and character. Hosts and guests are very friendly and good for a chat. We - coming from Switzerland - didn't feel like outsiders at all. A very warm and welcoming place. Here's a short list of the food we chose these two nights. There is a regular menu, available every day and then a daily special board: Crabcakes: nice size, good flavours Royal Burger w/ chips: superb! Good meat, crispy onion rings and a great salsa Orange Duck Paté: smooth and full of flavours, nice twist with the orange Venison with sides: tender pieces of venison, rich and creamy gravy Scallops: not overly exciting, but ok Eaton Mess (not a typo): really good, nice berries Cheese Plate: good cuts of nice tasting local cheese Banoffee Pie: sweet, rich....a good thing! This change has brought a breath of fresh air, the welcome is again warm and friendly, the food exceptional, gone is that massive menu of countless items which were only possible with the help of a freezer and microwave, never a good combination! Now the menu is manageable and cooked to order by a more than competent chef, for the first time in a long while we see a pass with heat lamps to keep the food hot a sign of a chef who cares about his creations enough to serve them hot and fresh, he does not disappoint either it really is exceptional food, hot, fresh and well presented but more to the point it tastes amazing. The price, we'll give it a try and you decide, we think it offers fantastic value for money and is run by a team of caring professionals so it is back on our hit list "must do" places our only worry is that too many will agree and we won't just drop in but have to book. This is possibly the oldest inn in England, dating from 1028, however it started as a hostel to house the masons who were building the church next door. The menu is excellent and the food has never let us down. The menu is suplemented by an enormous daily specials board with the accent on fish and game. There is a good choice of real ales and some of the other fizzy stuff for people who have lost their sense of taste. The wine list is extensive and contains some really good, reasonably-priced stuff. As can be imagined in view of the age of the building, the inn has a great traditional feel. The latest landlord is a clone of his predecessors in that his welcome is warm and his patience long well Judi always changes her mind at the last minute! So on your next visit to Devon, set your satnav to this lovely old inn. It's popular, though, so I would recommend that you book.
