My wife and I have been staying at the Mason Cottage for 8-10 years. This year the Franklin Room had no a/c in the front room. I had a terrible time sleeping for 2 nights. I sent them a complaint and their response was that I should stay somewhere else from now on. An 8-10 year repeat customer is just trashed rather than make some sort of a compensation offer. We have been to Cape May many times over the years, but never stayed there. We usually vacation in Wildwood Crest but this year, because of the pandemic, our usual spot was closed for 2020. We've always wanted to stay at a Bed and Breakfast in Cape May, so we thought this was the perfect time to do it. Boy are we glad we did. Our stay at the Mason Cottage was wonderful. I'll start by saying we were warmly greeted by Jeff, one of the Innkeepers. He filled us in about what we needed to know during our stay. I have to say, him and especially Amy, couldn't have been nicer hosts. Just two very nice people and they made our stay extra special. We stayed in the Madison Room which was clean, cozy and very comfortable. In fact the entire place is very well kept and maintained. There are tables and rocking chairs along the front porch, a wonderful outdoor shower which my wife used on a couple of occasions, bicycles to use and coffee available 24/7. The breakfasts every morning are delicious and are alternated every day between sweet and savory. I posted some of them, including the Cinnamon French Toast, Ham Tomato and Cheese Strata and Raspberry Champagne Pancakes. All were preceded by a fruit cup or smoothie. In the mid-afternoons there is a always a special snack and an adult beverage available to the guests. During our stay we enjoyed cheese and crackers, hummus, fruit, lemon cake and cherry pie as well as Bloody Marys, special Rum shots and fruity Vodka cocktails. The location of this B&B is also great. One block from the beach and about a block and half to downtown Cape May. We were also within walking distance of every great restaurant we had reservations for. This was just a wonderful overall stay and we look forward to staying here again. read more

Our stay at The Mason Cottage was wonderful! If you're looking for the classic Victorian B&B experience, this is for you! Location was great and everything was just a quick walk away. We stayed in The Franklin Room which has a queen bed and a little nook with a twin bed. We adored the room! The decor was lovely and we enjoyed having the extra space. The room is on the 3rd floor so you just have to go up two flights of stairs. It's really only an issue when you are bringing your suitcases up and down because it's a tight squeeze, otherwise we had no problem with the lack of elevator. We loved the 2-course breakfast each morning. We stayed for 4 nights and there was always something new and exciting prepared each morning. There was always ample amounts of freshly brewed coffee provided with breakfast as well as a well-stocked Keurig available for use 24/7. Tea time was also fantastic! We were told it was "chocolate month", and every day at 3pm there was a tasty array of chocolate themed treats. SO fun! The only big negative was the wi-fi. I had trouble connecting anywhere in the house, and especially in the room (3rd floor). Keep this in mind if you plan to use your laptop/phone for any sort of streaming! We loved everything about our stay at the Mason Cottage. Patti was a wonderful host and provided us with everything we needed, from fresh baked cookies at tea time to restaurant recommendations around the area. The breakfast was also delicious. We stayed in the Decatur room and enjoyed the space very much. What we enjoyed most about the Mason Cottage was its amazing location. It it located on a beautiful street in a line of Victorian homes, and only a block or two from both the beach and the main shopping area. It was perfect! My boyfriend and I rented bikes at a shop within walking distance from the cottage and explored the island based on Patti's suggestions. This was our first time here for my wife and I. Jeff and Amy were very friendly and did everything to make us feel at home. The rooms were kept very clean (we were in the Davis Suite), breakfast was great and there were bikes for you to rent and go explore, there are only 6 of them and it's first come first serve. There wasn't a time limit either. The beach is a block away and downtown Cape May is 2 blocks away. Between 3-4 o'clock I believe there was snacks laid out but we were never there to make it. We spent a weekend at the Mason Cottage B&B. The hosts were nice, and they offer amenities like bikes and beach chairs. Breakfast, was very good but a bit limited in options (eg a small appetizer and breakfast entre but no Danish, toast, bagels, etc for those who do not enjoy the entre). The biggest issue we had was with the water: the house has some unusual plumbing system that puts out HOT water from the cold faucet. It was supposed to get cold after a few minutes but it didnt. We had NO cold water for about 95% of the time. Very unpleasant to have to brush your teeth with hot water, and to come off the beach at the end of the day to get a "refreshing" shower before dinner only to find there is NO cold water and the shower just makes you sweat. "Housekeeping" amounted to making the bed and providing new towels. They didnt wipe off the vanity or take dirty coffee cups out of the room. Also note that there is no on site parking and parking is a premium in that area of town. We got lucky with finding spots to park but it was not peak season. There are lots and lots of B&Bs in Cape May. We would not reccomend this one. read more

My husband and I recently stayed at The Mason Cottage to celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary. We had previously been to Cape May, and this time wanted to try a B&B, and were so glad that we did. The Mason Cottage was exactly what we were looking for. It is in a giant Victorian home, and I absolutely loved that they have kept the charm from that time period. We had booked the Decatur suite which is on the second floor. Our room was very spacious, and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud!!! The bathroom had both a standing shower and a jacuzzi tub. (I didn't use the tub so I can't comment on that). The room was very clean, as was the bathroom. We were also supplied with two super comfortable robes, which were so soft!!! The breakfast both mornings we were there was delicious, and both very different! The first morning we had a fruit salad with vanilla dressing, followed by a pineapple coconut oat bar with a side of bacon. I could have eaten the oat bar, which was similar to a baked oatmeal, all day long! It wasn't too sweet, and had the perfect amount of fruit. Our second morning, we had a brûlée banana with fresh berries and Chantilly cream followed by an egg and sausage casserole. It was SO good!!! Amy definitely does an amazing job with breakfast. The little touches that added a lot for me was the Bloody Mary bar at breakfast. I love a good Bloody Mary and The Mason Cottage provides all the fixings to make that happen. Also, in the afternoon from 3pm-4pm they put out some light snacks. We had cheese and crackers the first day, with these amazing creme brûlée tarts, our second day we had chips and salsa, an herb dip, and freshly baked cookies. The location is also phenomenal, you are one block from the beach, and one block from shopping! I am looking forward to our next trip, and we will definitely be staying at The Mason Cottage! read more

So happy to find this place! I was looking for a bed and breakfast at the last minute, on one of the busiest shore weekends in August. Most bed and breakfasts with availability either required a minimum night stay or cost a fortune. Mason Cottage could accommodate us for one night and was within our budget. The room was definitely Victorian themed, but it was modern at the same time, and not too cluttered. After looking at photos of some other bed and breakfasts online, I came to the conclusion that a lot of inn owners don't know how to draw the line between historic and cheesy. The decor at the Mason Cottage was just right, and I particularly liked the whimsical backyard. Breakfast was delicious! We were served cheese quiche, strawberry jam muffins, and fresh fruit. The coffee was very high quality, and I loved the selection of Stash teas. I also really like that Mason Cottage is willing to accommodate vegans/vegetarians and other dietary needs. The location is perfect - a few blocks away from both the main shopping district and the beach. I would highly recommend Mason Cottage to my friends and family, and I would definitely stay there again! read more

This is a wonderful B&B and I would highly recommend it to anyone heading to Cape May. The Missus and I came here for a vacation (pre-SuperStorm Sandy) and really enjoyed the ambiance and the breakfast. The Innkeeper is a great cook and specializes in catering to specific dietary needs. One of the couples who shared the Inn with was was big on being gluten-free and got delicious breakfasts every morning. They have a "tea" in the afternoon which is really just a chance to sit around and chat with other guests while munching on a variety of chocolates and drinking tea. The Inn itself is about a block and a half from the ocean which would make it a premium location in the summer. The only downside and the only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that one of the best (and most expensive) suites is on the third floor which means a lot of steps. A lot of steps. If you're circumferrentially challenged or a little older, making the trek up and down the stairs several times a day is a chore. I think we would have taken a less opulent room if we had known about the stairs. Humping the luggage for a week's stay was a real bear. Also, there is no wi-fi in the rooms. There is a computer in a shared library space which worked fine but if you're someone who needs to have access to the Internet 24/7 from your room, you're out of luck. Other than those two very minor things, it was a wonderful stay. read more

We stayed at the Mason cottage during late August 2009 and it was great. We picked the spot because we were traveling with our dog, and few of the B&Bs are dog friendly, but I'd stay there again without her, too! My aunt (rather particular) and uncle stayed in a separate room at the same time, and were also very pleased. Has the typical amenities - big porch, outdoor shower, tasty but not super memorable breakfast included. Breakfast is either on the porch at individual tables or inside at the shared dining room table. They had bikes (in a reasonable state of repair) that we borrowed one afternoon, which was lots of fun. Location is one block from the beach, which really can't be beat! The only downside for us was that the dog friendly room was on the third floor, and we have an 8 year old basset hound with short little legs who doesn't do super well with stairs. The reason they picked that room for their dog room is because it has a separate entrance, which was nice with the dog, but meant that walks took a bit longer than we might have anticipated! I guess many people who travel with dogs have small pets they can pick up! read more

My wife and I stayed at The Mason Cottage during the first weekend of December. It was our first visit to Cape May and after our experience, certainly not our last! This beautiful Victorian B&B was all decked out for the holidays and while there were other homes decorated on Columbia Avenue - none matched The Mason Cottage's elegant and beautiful decoration both outside and in. We were greeted upon our arrival by Patti - our hostess for the weekend. She's friendly as can be. Sweet, accommodating, and just a pleasure to talk with. She's also one heck of a chef - but more on that later! Our suite - the Warne Suite - featured a lovely sitting room with fireplace, a private bathroom with jacuzzi, and a comfortable Queen sized bed. You can see the ocean from the bedroom, which was awfully nice to wake up to. The room was clean and comfortable and the addition of a guest book in the room was a neat addition. I enjoyed reading what other guests had to say about their stay at The Mason - and also to get some restaurant tips! Breakfast on both mornings was sensational. We had a cheese and onion quiche and while I am not fond of onions (and had I told Patti this, she would've made my quiche without), I ate every bite as it was just delicious. Our meal on Sunday was even better - featuring the absolute best French Toast I've ever had. Patti called it a French Toast Streudel; but, French Toast Heaven might have been a better name for it. I was excited to learn that Patti is coming out with a cookbook that will include the French Toast recipe! Also great to learn is that returning guests receive $10 off per night for their room rate. What a thoughtful way to thank guests for coming back again and again! Every aspect of our stay at The Mason Cottage was lovely. I can see how parking might be a worry during peak season, but for off season, parking was no problem and even with the cold, we found walking to restaurants and shopping areas quite easy. I recently stayed the weekend at The Mason Cottage with my closest friend. It was wonderful and very reasonably priced for the location and accommodations. A block from the beach, and a very short walk to shopping. The hosts, Amy and Jeff couldn't have made us feel more welcome or comfy. Amy's love of cooking made both the breakfasts and afternoon tea/happy hours delicious, creative and worth the splurge on calories. They clearly love to make their guests feel happy and want to return. Everything was clean and tidy. Very welcoming! This inn is not only beautiful but the inn keepers are amazing. Upon our arrival, my husband and I were greeting in the main salon. It was 3:00 pm and there was a beautiful display of treats, coffee and tea. The innkeepers spent the time to go over all the amenities and inform us of breakfast times. Stayed here with my husband and really enjoyed the place. Beautifully decorated for Christmas with 2 gorgeous Victorian Christmas trees, and pretty lights outside. They accommodated our request for vegan and gluten-free breakfast, had fruit salad and tasty oatmeal with brown sugar, cinnamon & chopped baked apples. Pomegranate green tea was delicious. Upon our arrival at 3:30 we were greeted with afternoon tea and vegan cupcakes (chocolate w/ chocolate icing), not gluten-free but tasted delicious. Very relaxing atmosphere, beautiful sitting room had gas fireplace and lovely period furniture. Relaxing spa-like music is playing in common areas. Dining room is beautifully appointed. Great location, walking distance to main shopping and restaurant area, walking distance to the beach. We stayed in the Columbia room on the first floor. Bedroom was a little tight, but ceilings were really high and made the room feel bigger. Bedding was comfortable and clean. Bed was a double, which is smaller than our bed at home, but the room cannot accommodate a queen size. Stall shower was really tight, and shower head was fixed in place, so rinsing off was a challenge. They should really replace the shower head with a removable one, so people can rinse off, or else the water stream just hits the top of your head. Bath towels were clean, plush & soft, spa quality. I would definitely come back, but we might book a larger room next time. Overall very charming B&B, and we greatly enjoyed our stay. read more

First the positives. The hosts, Marissa and Amy, are lovely ladies. Friendly, attentive and accommodating. The location is excellent, close to the beach and within walking distance of whatever you would really want in this part of Cape May. The building is also beautiful outside at night, with adorable accent lighting along the trim. Nice porch seating in rocking chairs for conversation. Parking, however, can be a challenge and is probably an issue at the height of the summer season. And that's where the negatives for us far outweighed the positives. This is a bed and "breakfast." There was no breakfast served to speak of, just a small glass of yogurt with diced fruit and equally small bread pudding that was underwhelming. Breakfast was sought and had elsewhere when it should have been provided as part of our stay. Coffee was in a keurig with only donut shop cups. Unrefined. Our room, the Decatur, was not cheap for the rate each night. It doesn't have a working lock (even though you get a room key for the deadbolt) so your possessions are left unprotected when you go out. It's right at the top of a staircase, so it's not tucked away if you're looking for that type of privacy. Your safety when you go to sleep is provided by a thin chain slide lock on the inside of the door. And the jacuzzi honestly cannot hold anyone of decent size and definitely not two adults interested in romance. For the considerable nightly rate we expected and deserved more and better, leaving us dissatisfied and unfortunately in agreement that if we ever stay again in Cape May, it won't be at The Mason Cottage. Three stars are generously given because of the two lovely ladies who were our hosts. read more

This write up is a couple of months after our stay because we went down to get away from the daily rat race here in NYC. This is the first chance i have had to sit down and accurately describe our winter retreat to the Mason Cottage. For anyone looking to just get away and enjoy peace and quiet you absolutely must go to Cape May during the off season. And the Mason is the best place to stay, 2nd to none. My wife and i stayed in the Grand Mason Spa Suite. For the price in the off season, this will be cheaper then any other place you can find including transportation if you are within driving distance. For the low rate you get half of the entire 3rd floor. This set up is larger then most Mahatten apts! The sitting room is large enough for sitting with your feet up, soft music ( or TV ) and playing around on your lap top. Walk up the hall into the spa room that is big enough to play racket ball in. There is a huge soaking tub ( my favorite as im over 6' and 225#s ) and a message table. Bring some message oil and treat your love to a nice rub down. Go further down the hall and theres a bath equally as large with a 2 person shower! At the end of the hall is the lovely victorian styled room, completely seperate from the front sitting room, so you can keep daily activities like checking Email or reading seperate from the bed room. The Innkeeper Patti was such a gracious host. She always has a smile and is willing to help with any little situation. Her breakfast selections are great and filling. With it being cold out we didnt get a chance to sit outside and i would imagine it is beautiful with warmer temps and flowers in bloom. Yeah, its the off season, but there is so much you can do. You can walk the outdoor mall and listen to the birds rather then the bustling crowds. Food is still fantastic with lots of local restaurants like The Ugly Mug, Trishas and The Lobster House staying open late. You can also take a short drive to either Hawk Haven Winery or Cape May Brewery for cheap tastings. And dont forget Atlantic City just up the Parkway. Pack up some snacks, a good book, some wine and comfy clothes to lounge around in and watch the every day stress melt away in no time. We will go back. read more

I surprised my fiance with a trip on a Sunday night to the Mason Cottage and we had an amazing time! The cottage is perfectly located as it is within walking distance to the beach and town. The rooms are large, immaculately kept, and include a Jacuzzi sized tub. To top things off the price the breakfast was delicious and the price was reasonable. Overall I highly recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone visiting Cape May. read more

This is a very nice and affordable B&B in Cape May located on beautiful Columbia Avenue - near the heart of everything. Patti, the inn keeper, cooks a great and tasty breakfast. Keep in mind that this is not an owner operated B&B, so you don't get the nice touches and the friendly services you get at an owner operated one, but overall this place is not bad. Pet friendly - if you need to visit Cape May with your dog. The WiFi was rather weak. I was never able to really log on with my laptop or phone, even when in the parlor. Ranks near the top, but not the best that Cape May has to offer. read more

The Mason Cottage is by far the best Victoria B&B in the area. My boyfriend and I have stayed here for an extended weekend the past two summers. We have stayed at numerous Victorian B&B's in the area and this is by far our favorite. This Victorian offers spacious rooms and bathrooms that offer both a shower and a jacuzzi. The house itself is a work of art offering beautifully decorated rooms and furnishings. The innkeepers Jeff and Amy were fantastic!! They warmly greeted us with afternoon refreshments and helped us plan our entire stay. They suggested tasty restaurants one block from the cottage, a few local wineries and a local spot for some great music. We loved that Mason Cottage was one block from the beach and had bikes on site for sightseeing around town. The two course breakfast in the morning was delightful. The yummy bloody mary bar, fresh squeezed juice and the breakfast were tasty each morning. We highly recommend this B&B to not only couples but also families. Our stay at The Mason Cottage was absolutely delightful. This B&B was exactly what we needed to celebrate our 5-yr wedding anniversary. The house was very warm and welcoming. We stayed in the Davis suite, which comes with a Jacuzzi and fireplace -- perfect for a romantic getaway. The robes and the bath amenities (especially the bath salts) added a nice touch to our stay. We also took advantage of the reading room on the second floor. Here we discovered books (duh!), board games, and the Wii. There's also a pantry on the 1st floor that's always stocked with coffee and tea. The parlor provides for tea time and is stocked with an assortment of chocolates. As nice as the house, our room, and all the amenities were, the innkeeper, Patti, made all the difference. She was so fun to talk to and really made us feel at home. We could never make it to tea time, so she would set aside a plate of her delicious cookies for us. Patti's breakfast was even more amazing. Our first morning there she made orange pecan pancakes with crispy bacon. The next morning she made 4-cheese quiche. We were in heaven! This is a lovely and small B&B on a quiet street. The rooms are nicely furnished and peaceful--a big draw for those of us looking for a quiet get away. Our one criticism was the breakfast. It was a big step down from the fare at other B&Bs we have frequented. It was very limited, not generous, and not particularly tasty. Sunday breakfast consisted of only a square of frittata and two small sausages. A half cup of diced melon, OJ, and coffee. Nothing else. There were a couple of cereals available but no fruit or nuts to add to them. This is not the place for you if you look forward to an ample and delicious breakfast as part of your B&B experience. read more

My husband and I just spent 2 wonderful nights at the Mason Cottage. Everything about this bed and breakfast is perfect and we can't recommend it enough. It is located in the heart of Downtown Cape May, perfectly situated for any activity you may want to do. It's a straight, block and half walk to the beach, there is a bike rental available about a minute away, even though the cottage does provide bikes (bike rental in case you're looking for tandem bikes, or 4 seaters). The Washington Street Mall and Congress Hall are less than a 10 minute walk, all through beautiful streets lined with Victorian mansions. Patti, the Innkeeper is so pleasant and accommodating! She's so easy to talk to and it's clear that she is passionate about making sure that everyone has a pleasant stay. The breakfast is delicious and the afternoon tea is a thoughtful touch to any visit. We loved having iced tea and cookies on the porch, relaxing on the rocking chairs, and people watching. We stayed in the Madison Room, which was spacious and clean, and had a wonderful selection of channels in the event that you just want to relax indoors! It was a beautiful weekend, and our stay at the cottage played a big role. It was our first visit to Cape May and we will most definitely be back. This was our third stay at the Mason Cottage and it was wonderful as always. The room we stayed in (Columbia Room) was clean and comfortable, perfect for my husband and I. Patti was very accommodating, as always. She prepared us a delicious vegan, gluten free breakfast and goodies for tea time. we went to cape may for our annual visit over my husbands birthday. have been going there for 40 yrs and thought we would try a new b&b. the accomodations were fine, but the bed was small with a very soft and lumpy mattress. the room was not clean, dirty door jams and soap scum in the tub. and, when our toilet was backed up, the owners gave us a plunger ! i do not want to spend my vacation time working on their plumbing. the thing that drove me over the edge was that they never once appologized for the inconvienence. a most unpleasant experience. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Mason Cottage for our anniversary. We can't wait to go back! The house is beautiful and the rooms are charming and very comfortable. I think the location is perfect - a short walk to the beach, but a nice distance from the noise and traffic. Patti was wonderful and the food was great! We started each day with a delicious breakfast on the porch. We also enjoyed the refreshments Patti put out every afternoon. I would definitely recommend the Mason Cottage! read more
