I was making travel plans for the upcoming months, and carved out a few days leading into a long weekend that I was looking to fill. One of the first places that came to mind was Cape May - I personally had not been here in over 20 years, but I know friends and family who regularly go and thought it would be a nice place for me to rediscover as an adult. The first question I asked myself was where I should stay - Cape May has no shortage of lodgings. Even though my first thought was one of the many inns along Beach Ave, I decided to look a little deeper and check out something more Cape May specific. The Virginia Hotel fit the bill, so that's where I booked. The Virginia is a boutique hotel at its heart, housed in a restored building that sits on Jackson Street. The hotel is owned by Cape Resorts, which also operates several other hotels in the area (as well as a couple on Long Island, NY). In addition to the main hotel, there are four cottages that fall under the Virginia - note that the hotel itself is adults only, but families may stay in the cottages. Like my other hotel reviews, I'm going to separate this review into pros and cons, so here we go! In my view, there are many pros to the Virginia - the first of which being the location. The hotel sits in the middle of Jackson Ave, a half block from the beach in one direction and a half block to Washington Mall in the other. The location really can't be beat - I walked everywhere during my stay. The exterior is lovely with sea blue sidings contrasting with striking red accents and flowers. They have an outdoor porch which is used for lounging (which I did) and seating for the Ebbitt Room (the onsite restaurant). Another pro are the amenities - the hotel only has 24 rooms, so you truly get that boutique hotel experience. My room was stocked with the essentials, the bed was comfy, and they offered complimentary continental breakfast. For the breakfast, you can either have it served in your room, on the front porch, or in the Ebbitt Room. Water and cookies are also served in the main lobby mid-afternoon - nothing fancy but a nice perk. The theming is also a pro - even though this isn't a B&B, the fact that the hotel is in a historic building gives the feel of being in one - the aesthetics and finishes are all high-end with interesting pieces, pops of color, and exquisite architecture. As far as cons, there aren't many. The hotel doesn't have an elevator, so you'll need to do stairs - not a con for some but something to keep in mind. There aren't some onsite amenities that one would expect at a hotel, such as a pool and a fitness center. You do, however, have access to the pool at Congress Hall and the fitness center at The Sandpiper - two nearby hotels that are also owned by Cape Resorts. If you park your own car you'll need to do so at Congress Hall a couple of blocks away, but they offer valet service. Finally, I want to circle back and give props to the staff - everyone I interacted with was super friendly and made sure that my stay was a great one. Even before I arrived, they texted to inform me of all the logistics, and I was able to communicate with the staff via text throughout my stay. Overall, I had a great return trip to Cape May, and the Virginia Hotel was an essential part of that. I would have no qualms staying here again in the future. read more

We booked a room during the off season my husband at the time was sick and we weren't sure if we were able to make it. I asked The hotel if we could change the dates or get a credit which they refused to even try to help us . Pretty sad that they couldn't even try and accommodate us. So luckily we were able to make it. Also on the last day when I was checking out on the bill they added someone else's bar charge glad I caught it before we left, being they were so unable to help with anything else. read more

We visited the Virginian hotel about three weeks ago. We felt pampered. Our room was beautiful. And we had an amazing time. Although there were a couple of small issues, the manager Josh took care of them immediately. I never expect perfect. I just expect good communication and results when it's not perfect. This was one of the best weekends away we've had in a very long time. The entire staff was very pamperingand accommodating to us. I would highly recommend The Virginia. The cancellation policy is ridiculous. There is no empathy for unforeseen circumstances, like waking up with the flu the morning of your reservation. We weren't asking for a refund; a partial credit or change in dates would have been appreciated. But this place is more interested in profiting off of others misfortunes. Just went in for an afternoon drink. It was 1:50 and the bar tender said opened in 10minutes. We went to sit in library room but no one was in site so we asked if we could just sit at the bar for the 6 minutes. From the moment we pulled up out front and Dominic offered to help us with our luggage and park the car, we were impressed with the service we received at the Virginia Hotel. Every member of the staff went out of their way to insure we had a great stay. Our 2nd floor room was so comfortable with housekeeping providing extra towels and blanket, a spacious closet, lots of drawers, and a comfortable bed. There was a small refrigerator and complimentary breakfast each day. We ate on the enclosed, heated porch both days. We enjoyed dinner in the hotel's Ebbitt Room restaurant as it was so convenient. This boutique hotel has everything I like: beautiful room, excellent restaurant on site, charming bar with piano music, lounge area, gorgeous porch, breakfast included (great coffee) excellent personable service! Let's not forget beach service! Just walk down(1/2 block) with the beach tags they include and they have a designated area up by the water with chairs, towels and umbrellas! Our stay here at the end of July was a little rough. Someone else's bags were in our room, valet took quite a bit of time, and the beach service was far from friendly. It's a whole story that management ended up making up for. However keep in mind, this is the first place and first time in my life that I have ever complained to management about something, and I hated that I felt like "that person." The delays and mishaps in service were excused by staff as COVID difficulties, but I think when you're spending so much money on a room that it can't be excused. This is a high end place, not a Holiday Inn. But like I said, management did reach out to me and tried to make up for the mishaps with a dinner on the house. Dinner was absolutely lovely, which is why I'm bumping this up from zero stars to two. It is quaint and quite pretty, and I would imagine the stay would be better in non-virus times. I would recommend waiting until life resumes without restrictions until you stay here. I know we won't be back simply because of the negative memories made, but for the benefit of the doubt, I would say others shouldn't write The Virginia off just yet. read more

A Perfect Weekend! We recently stayed at Virginia Hotel's little Gray Cottage for my wife's birthday weekend and it was amazing from start to finish. The Gray Cottage's accommodations far exceeded my expectations as a first-time visitor. The location is 1/2 block from the beach and surrounded by beautiful Victorian homes. The front desk staff at the Virginia is amazing. Check-in was efficient, very professional, and they convey a sense of willingness to go out of their way to make the stay the best. I had to deal with a non-hotel issue during the stay and the front desk staff went above and beyond to help me even though it was not their problem. Other staff members at the Virginia were also very friendly and willing to help make our stay special from the valet to housekeeping. There is free valet parking for guests. The Gray Cottage is perfect for a family or couples to stay. There is a nice front porch with rocking chairs on the ground floor and a deck on the second-floor facing the ocean. The second floor has the common area/living room and kitchen. The living room area has chairs, couches, board games, and TV. The kitchen is great with a countertop bar, fully stocked glassware, dishes, etc, and a Nespresso Machine. In addition to the stainless-steel refrigerator/freezer this cottage has everything you would need except the food. The bedrooms and their décor are calming and I can honestly say it's one of the few times I had a good night sleep in a hotel. The bedding is comfortable and inviting. The bathrooms are crisp and clean with subway tile and ample towels. The products are from the Beach Plum Farm. There is one bedroom on the second floor, a large king bedroom on the first floor, both with their own TV's and private bathrooms. The Gray Cottage at the Virginia Hotel was top notch and the amenities offered to cottage guests include those provided to guests in the hotel, but also those at the sister property Congress Hall, which is just around the corner. Just want to give you all a heads up if you are considering staying at the Virginia Hotel in Cape May. We feel it's important for everyone to know their cancellation policy for covid. My husband tested positive for covid the day before our reservation. We immediately called the hotel and explained the situation. They indicated that cancelling or rescheduling the reservation was not an option for covid and to come anyway. I said, "So you are okay with my husband sitting next to another guest when he has an active case of covid? " We would never put another hotel guest in harms way intentionally, and of course, cancelled our reservation and lost our deposit. I was shocked by the indifference to the health of their guests and thought you all should know about this. read more

The hotel was so beautifully decorated!!! We had a third floor room with king sized bed. Our room was a comfortable size and the bed was great. The bathroom had a nice shower with good water pressure. Everything was clean and spotless. The hotel staff was friendly and efficient. During our stay, valet parking was available and fast. The breakfast is a bit strange. You can order it for your room, or for service downstairs. You have to choose your food and time frame the night before. We were lucky that the hotel wasn't packed when we were there and the staff was very accommodating to our inability to guess the time frame of our meal. Also, their house made granola was delicious!! We came here for date night with 3 other couples. It was my first time here, I loved that they had valet parking. Otherwise it would have taken forever to find a spot. They have a gorgeous covered porch you can sit and wait for your table or just sit outside and have drinks. There were plenty of seats & tables so you don't need to be on top of other patrons. We had made dinner reservations, about a week & a half out so they only times they had were 5:30 or 9pm. We chose 5:30 so we could walk around the promenade after and take pictures on the beach as the sun set. Many of the beach goers are long gone before sunset so you almost have the beach to yourselves. We were given a private room because of our large party. There was another table in the room but that reservation was not til 7, so they were sat as we were paying the bill. It was as if we rented the room for ourselves. Our server was very attentive & nice. This is a farm to table place and there is always a changing daily special. I would highly recommend ordering the cantaloupe martini if they are serving that as their special. It was so refreshing I ordered two! I was not driving that night I ordered the steak & cake. The filet was cooked perfectly & my crab cake was mostly crab not filler. If you are looking for a nice night out, I would highly recommend this place & make an earlier reservation so you can walk around after & enjoy the sunset on the beach. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Red Cottage Inn for a weekend getaway in February. We stayed in the Holly Suite. We were really impressed with the spaciousness of the room and the services provided. The staff was friendly and informative. Our favorite part of staying here was the complementary breakfast that was served to the room. There's nothing better than breakfast in bed! For anyone considering booking be very careful of their cancellation policy. We ended up cancelling our trip because our car broke down. I am almost 30 weeks pregnant and actually broke down crying on the phone. The hotel was very strict on their policy, wouldn't even let us reschedule for once we got our car fixed. What a fantastic stay in Cape May!! My fiancé and I came here for the night - we enjoy the Cape Resort properties and wanted to try something new. We were able to check in 1.5 hours early and do self parking at Congress Hall. Staff is very friendly and upgraded us to a king bed room in the Virginia when we had opted for a cheaper cottage room when booking - awesome!! They offer an amazing complimentary breakfast delivered to your room and everything is absolutely delicious. The bar has great drinks downstairs, and we weren't able to go to the restaurant but we spoke with a lot of people who highly recommended it. Location can't be beat, and the holiday decorations are a true treat. Overall amazing experience and highly recommend. The only downside I can think of is there is not an elevator, but that was fine for us to walk off some of our calories :) read more

4.5 stars. I stayed here with Samantha M. and Jenna E. for the weekend during a snowstorm. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone vacationing in Cape May. Immediately you get a very old fashioned feel. I loved the decor and the staff was very friendly. The Virginia is within walking distance of several boutiques and restaurants. Pretty close to the water also. The rooms were adorable. The beds are super comfortable and the bathrooms are nicer than most hotel bathrooms I've ever used. There was a shower, bathtub, and really nice soaps and shampoos. The lobby is very cute. It has a piano, a bunch of nice couches, and a fireplace. There were homemade cookies and hot chocolate one day. Yum! The restaurant in the hotel called the Ebbitt Room is excellent. I think that was my favorite part of the trip. It is pricey but you are getting 5 star cuisine. Definitely a must try if you stay here. Because the place is old, there are not really amenities such as a fitness room or coffee shop etc. Also, parking on the street can probably get tough during the summer (if they had a parking lot, I didn't see it). We recently stayed at the Virginia Hotel last Memorial Day weekend. We went with the expectations that it was a bed and breakfast but were mistaken. I really don't know why we we were thinking bed and breakfast. When you check in at the front desk it really doesn't look or feel like a hotel. When you get to your room it has that bed and breakfast feel. Sitting outside on the Veranda gives you that B & B vibe again but make no mistake about it......this is a hotel, not a bed and breakfast, as advertised. The hotel is in a great location centrally located to everything. It's surrounded by so much history and character as well as many beautiful bed and breakfast places. Overall, the staff was extremely friendly, except for one of the servers who was a little bit "creepy". No parking for the vehicles but valet service makes this a non-issue. Breakfast is included in the price but is limited and disappointing. Same small menu everyday of basic breakfast items. You get to choose two food items from this short list. Again, lacked any character or substance that you would see in a bed and breakfast One plate of cookies for the entire hotel. They were good but we were told "once they're gone, they're gone". And that was at 3:15. Check in is at 3. Now, I'm not a stickler but it's those small things that separate the good from the great reviews. But again, I have to be reminded.....this is a hotel not a B & B. No afternoon coffee or tea but the staff does put out some nice water with fruit in it. Pet peeve: After every breakfast the server puts an envelope on the tray which the breakfast was served on. And reminds you that it's there (asking for a tip). I'm a big tipper but I thought this was very presumptuous. All in all we had a great weekend. But make no mistake about it....when we return to Cape May we will be staying at a real B & B. read more

3.5 Stars Ambiance: not so much of a hotel but rather a bigger bed and breakfast feel. Very intimate setting. Service: super friendly and super accommodating. Rooms: very clean. Not big or small. Just cozy enough for a bed and breakfast charm with modern amenities. Location: convenient, close to the beach, close to the historic district of Cape May, pretty much close to everything. We were very excited to celebrate my husband's and MIL's birthdays. We booked two rooms, special packages to include daily breakfast and half carafe of water every night. We arrived early. Rooms were not ready so we checked in later. Check in process was easy. We asked about the AAA rate. Staff said she will inquire and get back to us. There was no elevator so staff carried our luggage to our rooms. We expected this, so no disappointment there. Breakfast was served on time for all of us in our rooms daily. Breakfast foods were good. We enjoyed ourselves sitting on the porch at times in between shopping intervals. On the third day, we inquired about the AAA rate again and was told that they could only take off the discount that day and not the past two days since they were not aware of it. We explained that we had brought this to their attention the very first day when we checked in. They apologized but said there was not anything they could do about it. Naturally, we were disappointed. We later emailed the general manager and presented our plight. They responded quickly and resolved the issue. Reasons for not receiving 5 : with regards to our AAA rate, staff should communicate better and respond with "We apologize about not getting back to you about the AAA rate. However, let me check with my general manager and see what we can do" rather than their initial response, "I'm sorry. There's nothing we can do about it." There should never be a reason for us to get upper management involved. This could have been done easily among staff members since it was their mistake to begin with. Suggestions: hotels should have elevators. If they don't, they should be referred as Bed and Breakfast Inns. Also, if people check in for birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions, etc. make it feel more special for your consumers. We would return since staff are truly customer service oriented. And this place provides an intimate setting, much more so than Congress Hall (even though they are all owned by the same people/company). We had a great time staying at The Virginia Hotel this president's day weekend. Everything was superb, the check-in smooth and cordial, the valet efficient and courteous, the room lovely and clean. We spent some time in the lobby/living room by the fire in the afternoon, which was very relaxing. Later in the evening it was very crowded there, so we retired to our room, and relaxed in the coziest bed. Breakfast came at the pre-requested time, on a lovely silver tray and was just enough to get us up and running. The shower was very nice, two showerheads to choose from, and very clean with lots of towels. Everything we needed for a nice winter getaway. I stayed at the Virginia Hotel the other week for 2 nights. The staff was great and I was in during offseason. However I was totally thrown off by the fact that there is no elevator and essentially the hotel is a bunch of "homes" where each floor is a hotel room. There is no elevator period which is pretty typical for all of Cape May. The staff was very helpful with helping me when my room had no heat but the rooms are a bit different. We got transferred from the pink cottage where each room has a Nescafe machine to the main building where the room was bigger but there was no Nescafe machine or anything like that at all! I think if these rooms are truly more fancy than the ones in the cottages you need to have a coffee machine of some sort in them. I did appreciate the free breakfast that came with our stay (for each morning you are with them). They also have complementary valet parking which is nice since there is almost 0 street parking around the hotel as well as no garage or parking lot for the hotel. Overall it was a bit pricey for the amenities it offers and the "old" glamour feel of it but I got a sense that this is pretty common to the vibe of Cape May as a whole. I think a true test of their service and amenities is to come back in the summer during peak season! read more

Stayed for two weeknights in early December to celebrate my birthday and took advantage of their Winter Warm Up package that included a $40 per night dining credit, 15% off one spa service and 15%off one spa product. The Virginia is part of the Cape Resorts that includes numerous properties including the Congress Hotel where the spa and outdoor pool and additional dining options are located. Guests at any Cape Resort property can use facilities in other properties, which is nice. (A few years ago, we stayed in one of the cottages during the summer, so having this flexibility was appreciated). Our room on the third floor was spacious and clean. We chose the room with the spa shower (three shower heads) which sounded nice but not sure I would book this room again for that feature. Note there are no elevators but staff will gladly carry luggage up and downstairs. Complimentary off site valet parking is a nice bonus as was the complimentary continental breakfast. You have the option to eat in the restaurant or have it delivered to your room, which we did. Not a lot of breakfast options but the food was good. You can upgrade your breakfast to include alcoholic drinks for an extra charge (we didn't). There were also nice plush robes in the closet and we kept saying we were going to wear them eating breakfast but we never remembered to do so! There is a dining room on the bottom floor that is kind of pricey; we didn't eat there but did enjoy cocktails there one night. The spa at Congress Hall was nice and offered the usual compliment of services you would expect to see. I couldn't decide so I chose a sampler package. This was listed for a single price so I was a bit surprised (and slightly dismayed) when the discount was offered on one of the services in the package, not the entire package. This was also awkward as I based my gratuity on the package price, splitting it between the two providers evenly. Had I known about the individual pricing, I would have apportioned the gratuity differently. There is a fitness room that is adequately outfitted in Congress Hall. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. All of the properties were very festively decorated for Christmas. read more

My husband and I booked a stay at the Virginia Hotel via a phone call directly to the hotel after winning a gift certificate. I told the staff on the phone that I had a gift certificate and they informed me to bring it and it would be applied to the cost of the room at check out. Upon check out, I was told by the manager that it looked like my reservation was made online and they could not use my gift certificate. After showing the manager my phone log which proved I called the hotel directly to book my room, the manager stated he didn't know why his system was showing the reservation was made online. He stated there must of been some kind of hacking of the phone call that redirected my call and changed how my reservation was made. Whatever happened that changed my reservation was an error on the hotel's side, not my own- which the manager agreed, it was fault of the hotel. However, he refused to honor my gift certificate, refused to refund my money, refused to issue me another gift certificate for use at a future stay. While we did enjoy our stay, the terrible customer service by the staff and the manager put a damper on our weekend. read more

My husband and I just finished spending my birthday weekend in Cape May. Our room was clean and comfortable and that's all the good things I can say about this place. The hotel is extremely noisy with people running up and down the hallway slamming their room doors until 2am and all outside noise could be heard due to the old windows. We were given a continental breakfast menu to complete and leave for the concierge the night before. Listed on it were food selections, time and location you would like to served. Well this is joke because we waited a half an hour on the freezing front porch and none of the staff had a clue what they were doing. An hour later we just asked them to bring it to our room, we couldn't waste anymore time. Management was no where to be found!! read more

Horrible experience. Woken up Sunday morning at 700 by somebody blowing leaves out of courtyard right next to my room. Tried to call front desk 5 times and no answered and went to voicemail that was filled. The blowing went on for 45 minutes. I eventually went outside and told the person to stop immediately. I went to the front desk where Sierra was sitting doing nothing. I told her i called 5 times and she didn't answer. She said she didn't hear the phone ring. I asked to talk to the manager and she said he may or may not be in after noon and i would get a call back which i never did. I called front desk later in the morning to have my car brought up. I was put on hold for over 15 minutes. I walked to the front desk where she was still doing nothing. I told her i was still on hold and she said she just got off a call which was a lie. Unfortunately, they charge the prices of a 5 star hotel with service not even comparable to a Best Western. read more

I recently stayed at this establishment with a couple of other Yelpers for the weekend, and it was an entirely enjoyable experience! The hotel, which is a renovated Victorian, had a design aesthetic that I fell in love with immediatey. Even though we arrived pretty late (around 2 AM), the staff on duty was welcoming and courteous. Our room was very nice - bright and spacious for a double, with comfy furniture and a bed that I virtually melted into, making it hard to motivate myself out of the next morning. My favorite quality of our room had to be the linen spray that the cleaning staff uses. It was light and refreshing without being overpowering (I liked it so much that I asked for the brand so I could buy it for myself). The location can't be beat either - just a few minutes walk away from the beach, boutiques, and other hotels in the area. Despite being there in the off-season, we had a great time. I would definitely return, either once the weather warms up or for another quick weekend getaway. read more

We stayed at the Virginia Hotel in the off-season having never visited the Cape May area. Our expectations were somewhat high based on positive feedback from friends and family. When we pulled up in our car on the evening of our arrival we waited by the valet sign for about 10 minutes but nobody came out to park the car. I dropped my fiancee at the curb with our luggage and decided to find off-street parking. When I arrived in the lobby I found the valet attendant and hotel registration personnel whom both failed to help my fiancee with the luggage from the curb. They were also not apologetic about their inability to assist with the parking of the vehicle. The hotel room was OK except the bed linens were stained from the previous guest. We had dinner at the Ebbitt Room in the hotel which unfortunately was only fair. We were impressed with the online menu but we were told that many of the items were not available on the off-season. We ordered the bone-in ribeye for two medium rare and it came out extremely rare. It was raw and cold in the middle. Otherwise the service was very good and the food other than the steak was very good. Came here a few years later and brought my parents and wanted to show the how cute it was Jeremy and Charlotte (Sorry if I'm wrong) were at the bar just opening it we were super early but he still went out of his way to make us some drinks and she made great convo while she cut fresh flowers for the dinner service. My brand-new husband brought me here for two nights directly after our wedding. Great location, tasty breakfast (brought to our room!), complimentary valet parking, lovely and well-decorated quiet rooms with great views, a totally slammin' Jacuzzi bathtub.... add to that the beautiful sunshine coming through our windows and we had an absolutely perfect stay. We stayed here in the off-season (January) and had a great time. I highly recommend the spa room overlooking Jackson Street and if you look just past the street, the ocean (because it's located on the third floor)! The decor is classy and the entire place was flawless. I've heard it can be very pricey during the summer and I bet it's true because compared to the others in outer-appearance alone, this place was definitely the most well-kept. At least I can say, it's probably worth every penny and I think they give you a credit or a discount to use at The Ebbitt Room (which looked and reviews well) or Blue Pig Tavern (which also reviews well). There's a small lounge area with a fireplace and a sun room that was perfect for eating our complimentary breakfast, which was a serious upgrade to your usual complimentary continental breakfast, as we were able to customize it somewhat and chose whether or not we wanted it brought up to our room or taken downstairs. The beach is just around the corner and although they didn't tell us, I saw that the parking lot for Congress Hall/Blue Pig Tavern also accommodated The Virginia Hotel guests- good to know in the summertime for sure, but we were able to find parking on the street w/out any problems in the off-season. Went here for a friend's wedding and the reception was quiet, private, and well maintained. Food was quite delicious and made to order. Service was smiling and happy. The bartender was fantastic, kept my glass full all afternoon. Excellent venue. read more
