Currently staying here and the construction right outside our window is like someone hammering directly on your brain. Front desk assured me it would be from 10-6 but it starts at 8:30 am. Forget sleeping in or taking a daytime nap. Also breakfast spread downstairs is nice but if you want an egg or omelette on the side expect it to take 40 minutes. Costs 40 pounds so really should be a little quicker. Also, called downstairs to ask where gym was and they said with certainty they didn't have one. About 15 minutes later someone called the room to say yes in fact they do have a gym. Very odd. read more

This is a well located, comfortable hotel with very caring staff members. I stayed here after finishing a rather intensive one week, penultimate Global Real Estate course in my MBA program at the Stern School (NYU). After a week of 12 hours days of meetings, lectures, and group work, I was looking for respite from the academics and Mayfair Hotel did not disappoint. It's located in my favorite of London (Mayfair) on a street is very close to Berkeley Square and Hay Hill yet is tucked away with less traffic. There is a terrific Sainsbury Express across the street where I could easily pickup water, fruits etc. and everything that I wanted was walking distance. I opted for the studio suite as I wanted a better hoteling experience than that I had in the academic program and Mayfair did not disappoint. The suite was spacious with a walk in closet and a massive bathroom that included a tub and shower. Their laundry/pressing service was superb and to my delight, NBA basketball was offered in their TV channel selections. As a huge Boston Celtics fan, I was able to watch the same game as my state-side friends. The building itself is quintessentially British with the Edwardian flair (hotel group not style). Room service, front desk, porters and laundry staff were all attentive, helpful. I had a need for scissors to remove clothing tags from a shopping trip, they had one available in 5 minutes, the Weekend edition of FT was included in my room service breakfast and leaving the hotel for Heathrow was a breeze as they arranged for a black car service (a Mercedes with glow in the dark ceilings). If you are looking for a well located, hassle free stay, I would highly recommend the Mayfair. Perhaps I'll stay in one of their other color coded suites. read more

The customer service here is marvalous! When raining - they let you borrow an umbrella. I was stying here for work travel. my office is a few blocks up the street. Its in a nice and safe neighborhood. I enjoyed my walks back and forth to work and my late night walks to dinner. The rooms are clean. The bed is comfortable and the bathroom is a good size. The first day there I plugged my computer and all my electronics and something went terribly wrong!! the light went out! I heard the popping and now I could smell something burning. I quickly called downstairs. They were there in less time than I could blink and they quickly fixed the problem. I definitively recommend. read more

Disagreeable Receptionist , Room booking not honored. We have stayed in this Hotel many times but this time the experience was not good. My office booked corner rooms on the 6th and 7th floor where we stayed the last couple of times. This was confirmed by the Hotel . My office confirmed several times over some weeks ,after booking that these rooms were being held for us . But when we arrived only the 6th floor room was being held for us and the reason given was that the guest staying there extended their stay ! Since we had specifically been assured of these rooms the previous guest asking for an extension should have been given some other room . On top of that Irina the Reception person dealing with us was brusque - after having told us of this unexpected situation and having proposed another room which was neither a corner room nor as large - she asked us immediately whether we wanted another room or not ! Even the 6th floor room had scaffolding all around it . This should have been brought to our attention when we booked . Even a 3 star Hotel in Zurich when booked told us in advance of scaffolding A lobby manager found other rooms in the end which were acceptable but the impression had been spoilt read more

This is one of the hotels I typically stay at when I am in London. It is relatively modern (I stress the word relatively) while not as posh and grand as the Dorchster or the Ritz. I like it primarily for the location. It is a short walk to my office on Pall Mall in St. James, it is also a block away from the Green Park tube station and about a 10 minute walk to Piccadilly Circus and the theater district. There is also a supermarket right across the street. While it is off and away from the main thoroughfares and is usually pretty quiet, the rooms facing Berkeley Street can get a little noisy on Friday and Saturday evenings with Arab driven supercars passing through. You may also occasionally run into issues with paparazzi and celebrity fans since the May Fair and Nobu next door seem to be popular with the British celebrities. I ran into an issue getting into the hotel a couple years ago when apparently Collin Farrell was having some altercation with a paparrazo. The staff here is always friendly and helpful. This is also one of the few hotels that offer family suites that is large enough to fit a family of 4; availability is limited so you'll have to book it early. read more

This was our second stay at The Mayfair. While the first couple of days were quite problematic due to poor service, the hotel manager eventually addressed our issues to our complete satisfaction. Room Issue The hotel switched our room from a room on the seventh floor to a room in some disrepair with no light on a much lower floor between check-in and arrival. When I pointed this out upon our arrival, the clerk--a trainee--informed me that the hotel had no other rooms at our reserved level. She instead proposed a more expensive suite on a very low floor. The suite was quite nice but subject to a bit of low-level vibration from several building air conditioning units adjacent to the building wall. We accepted the suite despite notwithstanding since it was presented as the only alternative to the much worse superior room. We then found out a day later that friends with whom we were traveling had been shown several rooms in our original category at the same time as we had been told none were available. In other words, we had not been told the truth and ended up in a much more expensive suite. Staff Issue The next evening, I asked our waiter to apply the bill to my room account at the hotel while treating friends to drinks at the hotel bar. Another waiter then came up and announced loudly to the table that I had no credit at the hotel and demanded payment. He refused to check with the front desk when I suggested that he was mistaken. I immediately went to the front desk and was assured that the bar bill could be charged to my room. The desk clerk graciously offered to come help, but we were barred from entering from two security persons for no reason. They continued to refuse entry even after I explained that my friends, wallet and coat were in the bar, and they aggressively questioned my guest status and demeanor. The bar manager eventually noticed and apologetically interceded, after which the desk clerk and he immediately resolved a computer issue and applied the charges to our room. Resolution Needless to say, I was not in a good mood the next morning when I met with the hotel manager. However, the manager's professional demeanor, care and responses quickly improved matters. The manager (whose name is Luigi) listened carefully, apologized and proposed several possible resolutions. We quickly agreed on how best to address my concerns, and he promised to make sure that the desk staff and security persons would receive feedback on how to deal with guests more appropriately. Our stay after this was completely satisfactory. Luigi checked in frequently, and we were completely satisfied with the room, housekeeping and other services. Conclusion I continue to think that The Mayfair is a great, reasonably priced upper-level hotel and that a suite in the same line on a higher floor would be perfect for a couple wanting a quiet stay in London. The breakfasts are quite good and well-served. Housekeeping also was performed unobtrusively and perfectly. I think that the service and staffing issues we experienced are similar to those faced by many hotels in these post-Covid times. Luigi's attention, professionalism, and effective resolution of our issues transformed our stay for the better. read more

This is a review of the breakfast at the Mayfair Hotel in London, England. The hotel is excellent. So is breakfast at its restaurant called The Mayfair Kitchen. We were at the hotel and the restaurant for breakfast for six non-consecutive days, including two Sundays in October 2024 where the National Football League was playing in London and the restaurant was particularly crowded. The staff did an exceptionally fine job of handling those extra folks. The hostesses seated people expeditiously and always with a warmth that was really welcoming. The wait staff was then attentive to those who wanted a food item not in the buffet. Coffee, tea, and hot drinks were brought quickly. The food was excellent. And the way the staff worked really created a real atmosphere of enjoyment. The staff really wanted all customers to feel taken care of. It was a wonderful place for breakfast. I particularly want to mention the hostess staff who created such a welcoming atmosphere, and one person in particular--Jarka, who seemed to be everywhere and incredibly efficient, seating people, clearing tables, seeing what food need to be resupplied, but most especially doing this in a warm and welcoming manner. Absolutely stunning building I was here 2 weeks ago and it was such a fun stay. The bathroom was huge and spacious and the room was no different. I am a car guy so it was fun to see Ferraris parked in front almost daily and a Rolls Royce dealer on the same block. It was a fairly good central location and most places were fairly walkable. My only complaint is that this hotel made the rest of the hotels on my holiday pale in comparison. read more

Always love the central location here as it's a skip away from amazing dining options and bars. The only thing I could possibly bitch about is the shower. 1/4 of the water gets out of the shower pan on to the floor. Big deal- it's a hotel and they clean it. GREAT location. Close to a ton of stuff you'll be interested in. Staff was nice. I felt safe. Rooms were clean. Bed was comfy. Nice little store directly across the street to get sundries, beer, wine, etc. There were some who complained the elevator took too long, but whatever.... you're on vacation- deal with it. They provide adapters for your US garbage to plug in to as well. I'd stay there again if I liked London :) read more

Very disappointed with the May Fair this visit. My last trip to London, I had a marvelous time in the cigar bar. It was warm, well ventilated, with excellent service. Decent cigar list, good cocktails, not ridiculously expensive. This time, I called a bit after 5pm and asked if I needed a booking or could I just walk in if I arrived before 5:30pm. I was told, "no, if you are going to arrive soon you don't need a booking, you can just walk in." When I arrived, I was told "oh, the cigar room is closed tonight for a private party." I went to the Lanesborough instead. It's cigar garden is the best place to smoke a stick in London. They don't take reservations. But, when I phoned they said "we have five or six tables open right now. It's first come, first served but if you get here soon it shouldn't be a problem." When I arrived at the Lanesborough, I did indeed get immediately seated. I cannot recommend the May Fair after this most recent experience. read more

I recently stayed here and spent nine nights. AKIL (Syed) from the Vanderbilt was incredibly helpful in redirecting my reservation. Thank you AKIL ! From the moment I got to the May Fair I was treated with welcoming friendliness and respect. My heavy luggage was taken straight to my room before I knew it. I was given a very spacious room, with the most comfortable bed and pillow I've ever slept on - including my own!The furniture was pretty and modern. The TV was state- of-the-art. There was tons of closet space and lots of drawers. And with a nine night stay I needed it. The bathroom was huge, bright with a separate shower and not over the bathtub. There was a large well-lit vanity area and beautiful high end toiletries by REN. The Housekeeping was outstanding! The breakfast buffet was absolutely the most delicious and carefully presented I have ever had. As soon as you are seated. a waitperson comes to you and asks what kind of beverage and toast you want. Everything served there is so fresh and beautifully prepared and presented and of the highest quality! NORMA and PANOSH were really lovely and so attentive. The concierges DENIS (Neychev) and DARREN were incredibly helpful with their walking directions and suggestions. They were wonderful! Another huge plus about the May Fair is its location - it is five minutes from Green Park tube station, and about five minutes to Piccadilly. So it is walking distance to world famous Fornum & Mason, Waterstones and Hatchard's, etc. It also only took about 15 minutes to walk to the National Gallery. You honestly could not improve on the location here. Every single person at the hotel bent over backwards to make sure I was happy and comfortable and enjoying my stay. Of special note is LAUST ANDERSEN, the Reception Manager. He really made a big contribution to ensuring that this was a true "5-star" experience for me. I would hope to stay again sometime. read more

Great hotel in a wonderful location. It was a short walk to Westminster, the London Eye, the War Rooms and the Tower Bridge. Plenty of shopping and restaurants everywhere. The staff was excellent, especially Maria! The bar and restaurant are excellent although the bar becomes more of a night club later in the evening. A real scene! The rooms were huge and I think our bathroom was bigger than our entire hotel room in Paris! read more

What a luxury chic boutique hotel is all about. Recently, stayed here during our London visit and the staff and hotel amenities are first class. Each time we arrived and left we were politely greeted by the doorman and bellhop. Received complimentary umbrellas during our stay while it rained and we were able to keep them. Rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. Prices are higher than most but the level of service, vibrant bar, cigar lounge, exquisite dining room and location are all worth the price of the room. read more

The May Fair hotel has a great location,a few minutes walk from Green Park station in close proximity to shopping and sights but still fairly quiet location. Upon entering the hotel it was clear that The May Fair really tries to not let anyone waiting - lots of staff everywhere. Therefore a bit disappointed when room was not ready even when it was past check-in time. No real issue since I had a few errands to run but when returning I was surprised to find out that the bags had not been sent to my room as promised. After several more promises to have them sent up (and involving a lot of waiting for the bags) I had to go down and get the bags myself. Not really five star service. The room was fairly big and had most things that I would expect from a hotel of this class. The bed and the chair was comfortable but slightly annoying that there is no proper desk in the room. Maybe it is a Rezidor (the chain that owns May Fair, the Radisson hotels and several other hotels) thing because I experienced similar things in some of their other London properties. The minibar was of the type where one is charged if moving something - not a major thing but not a favorite of mine. The TV reception was fairly poor which is also not what I expected at a hotel that aims to be top class. The bathroom was very nice, large with bathtub and shower and still plenty of space left. I was however else a bit disappointed in the poor sound proofing of the rooms. I am not a light sleeper so did not at all disturb my sleep but I could hear every word of all the conversations the people in the room next door had. So far I was not impressed by the hotel and the service but there were some redeeming features. Both the business center and the fitness center were very good. Both well equipped and kept clean and tidy. The breakfast was also very good. Service here was really good - friendly, quick and efficient. The variety of both hot and cold food was good. Everything I had was also fresh and tasty. Only thing that I felt did not measure up was the coffee (but I do on the other hand virtually never find good coffee at any hotels - need to go to the specialty coffee places for that). All in all I still grade at a 3 when I take the price paid into account. I managed to geta very good deal and that is what makes it still good enough. read more

Stayed here for a little less than a week during my London vacation. In short, this place is awesome! All the employees are super friendly-- the bell hop and front desk service was impeccable! They have fresh fruit water waiting at the front desk (this was great after a long flight!) and the check-in process was efficient. The rooms were HUGE by London standards! Comfortable beds, flat screen TV, cool decorations, and a large bathroom with a tub and shower. They thought of every small detail here-- rooms are equipped with 120 V plugs and the free WiFi is super fast! The amenities are awesome too-- the gym is small but has high-tech treadmills, ellipticals, and weights. The restaurant downstairs serves up a decent breakfast (included with our room rate for us-- not sure if this is always true). Concierge service was some of the best I have ever had. They are there 24 hours a day and helped us book our double decker bus ride tickets, recommend delicious cafes, and give us the inside scoop on local attractions. Room service was top notch-- I ordered some items from the late night menu after having a mediocre dinner with some friends and it came in a timely fashion. Tasty too! Overall, I highly recommend this hotel. Perfect location and excellent service all around. read more

We are enjoying our 5 nights in this hotel. It has been close to many activities. The mattress could be updated. The breakfast was included and very good. The service is excellent, so we are happy. The price was dear, but we are in the midst of a great international city, London, in a great location. Short cab rides to everything. The room is the right size, nice bath, clean and updated. Except for the mattress. It was uneven........didn't interfere with sleep, but important to both my husband and I. We have gone to theater, a Thames river cruises, museums, all close by. read more

I haven't as yet had the pleasure of actually staying at the hotel, but I do like to pop in as often as I can to use their underground facilities! The May Fair spa and gym is resident in the hotel basement, and every time I have been it has been pretty quiet, which is one of the reasons that I like it so much. It's a little bit of a mystery as to why it possible to find it that way, seeing as the hotel is often overrun with WAGS, HAGS and LV BAGS! Obviously, it's a high end establishment so treatments are pricy, but it's worth having a look on their website for any special offers and also keeping an eye out on the normal discount / voucher sites that shall remain nameless. A day pass costs £30 if you are not a guest in the hotel, and £15 if you are. Towels, shampoo, slipper etc are all provided, so just take your wet stuff with you, and even if you forget those, it has been known for people to adopt the scandinavian way of thinking - not that I am endorsing nor encouraging such behaviors (I'm British!) It's a real shame that the people have had such poor service here as it has the potential to be a really loving London experience. read more

Stayed here for a long weekend and found it to be an excellent hotel. Pros: 1. Nice decor. The May Fair projects a hip vibe, without being sterile. 2. Rooms. The room was very tastefully decorated, albeit a bit small (no surprise, it's London). The bathroom was nice too. 3. Location is fabulous, just a block from the tube. Easy walk to a lot of great shopping/culture, yet the hotel itself was quiet. Plus, there's a Sainsbury's across the street if you want to grab a quick snack. Cons: 1. They screwed up the bill a few times, primarily with room service charges that were miscalculated. They were gracious in fixing their mistakes, but the same mistakes should not be repeated at a 5-star hotel. 2. Cost. Actually, I thought it was a fair value for a 5-star property. Still, it's expensive. We had room service for breakfast all 3 mornings; otherwise, we didn't really check out the hotel restaurants. Still, it was a great breakfast. read more

For me, London is not a place you want to save a few extra pounds on a room because the conditions could be detrimental. That being said, the May Fair Hotel is a place to relish in the luxury of a rock star or politician. Not only is it classy, but helps you escape the hustle and bustle of working and back into recharge mode. The rooms are plush, the service is excellent and there is even a grocery store next door to stock up on little guilty pleasures. For me, those are candies and soda. The breakfast is amazing and the rooms were clean and a reasonable size. If you want to treat yourself then this is the hotel for you!. During our stay, we accidently discovered that the hotel had a movie premiere for The Fault in Our Stars and myself and my friend were in a lift with Ansel Elgort. The May Fair is a trendy bar with a hotel attached. Paparazzis always stationed out front. Room was cozy and average size for a metropolitan property, however even though I had made reservations months ahead of time in our corporate room block, my view was overlooking an alley and rooms into another building. Front desk staff unfriendly and the food was lousy. However, it's in an excellent location, right next to Green Park tube station, Buckingham Palace and rest of Mayfair shops and offices. Not to mention the Sainsbury's across the street. Good call Corey N. Won't stay here again - will stay at the Ritz - however no hard feelings. They just try too hard to be cool and they lose the guest experience as their #1 priority. Good place to stay if you want a celeb sighting though. read more

I'm usually a harsher critic than most, so I'm surprised by the lower than expected ratings for May Fair Hotel. I did an absurd amount of research prior to booking the May Fair for our night in London (seriously, at one point I think I had a spreadsheet listing about 30 different options). After staying here I have no doubt this was the right choice. The rooms were modern and stylish, the service was top notch, and the location could not be better. We took the tube from Heathrow and had less than a 1 block walk to the hotel, how can you beat that? Plus walking distance to pretty much every point of interest in downtown London. I thought it was kind of interesting that they come in and "freshen" the room when you step out. It didn't bother me, but just something to be aware of. I'm not sure when I'll be back to London, but there is no question where I'll be staying. Highly recommended. read more

Hotel disappointed in several ways. Despite its tony reputation, it let us down in several ways. While room service was adequate, similar for served in the restaurants was less than stellar. In addition, attitude abound at the various later bars. The "bouncer" in particular presented much attitude to get into their cocktail lounge at night desire being guests and spending $400+ per night. Housekeeping also left a lot to be desired. Daily, nearly empty drink cans were left in the room as were empty champagne bottles. We had to carry the items out to the hallway and leave them literally piled outside the door to get someone to take them. Such an adorable hotel in a great location. Was able to get around fairly easily to see all the sights. Staff was extremely friendly, especially in the bar and restaurant. I loved that there was a drug store just across the street for anything you've forgotten. The rooms were really bright and pretty and the bathroom was gorgeous. For some reason I failed to take pictures but it was definitely a beautiful room. Average size, but I loved the way it was decorated. read more

Stayed here for 5 days in December. Great location, near the tube and waling distance to Oxford Street. I arrived at 9am and was allowed to check in, no problem. Great employees and nice clean rooms. The bed was nice and the bath was large... Oh, and the Internet was free! Those make for a great stay, in my opinion! As a bonus, it was very quiet and my breakfast inclusive rate was a bargain as the daily breakfast was great! I always prefer restaurant breakfasts and the May Fair had hot and cold options, all of high quality. I requested that they empty my refrigerator and I shopped at the Sainsbury across the street, keeping drinks and such on hand. There is a small ice and filtered water machine discretely tucked away near the elevators. This is a huge bonus to me, Texans use a lot of ice! I enjoyed my stay and hope I can stay there again one day. read more

Always thought that Radisson Hotels chain can't be up to a 5 star level no matter what they do. But because Mayfair hotel has been featured in so many articles, TV interviews and events, I thought this has to be the jewel of all hotels under this chain; turned out I was entirely wrong. The hotel is situated in a very attractive location with many convenient sightseeing locations and shops, but the internal parts of the hotel itself is on the contrary to the location aspect. the rooms look different from the plushy colourful ones appearing in media and the website, rather smaller and dull!! service is below average standards- and food at bar and restaurants aren't special really I tried the spa as well which was mediocre on all levels (decoration and services offered) I had really high hopes for this place but not any more it is a shame read more

Love love love this place. I was lucky enough to be invited for a networking event a few nights ago. What can I say from the moment I arrived, the staff were very polite and helpful. Moët was free flowing, along side white and red wine and other soft drinks. The canapés were simply incredible, from sea bass to goats cheese tart to the blueberry cheesecake for dessert. Would love to come back another time and check out the bar and have a quiet meal with the restaurant and after the way we were treated at this event, something tells me it won't be long before we are back. read more

I stayed at the May Fair Hotel about 3 yrs ago and I like it very much - but this review is of the bar which i visited on my most recent trip. Very trendy hip bar. The geisha martini was lovely! This truly is a fantastic place to people watch. So many incredibly dressed people both in the lobby and at the bar. The service was pretty crappy though. The cocktail waitress was too busy talking to her friends sitting next to us that we needed to constantly flag her down. For such a pricey place I was surprised with the lack of attention. If you're in for people watching or wanting to be seen - then this is the place.. Event better if you're friends with the cocktail waitresses! For a more romantic setting.. don't come here. read more

My experience with the service was nit newly as poor as other reviews but it was uneven nonetheless. Specifically, they failed to ever pick up my shoes to be shined and i had a heck of a time getting help to get the wireless to work. They charge a pretty penny to stay here, so I would expect the service levels to be better. The room was clean and comfortable and everything else was okay. Also should be noted that the meeting rooms are very small and not very comfortable. For this price it's hard to rank it higher than "meh". read more

I'm utterly torn with this place. The staff are fantastic, so friendly and helpful (and you don't get that feeling that they're going to bitch about your shoes as soon as you've left). But the rest of the experience? Not that great. I've been here a couple of times - the first after gatecrashing a party for Tara Palmer Tompkinson in the penthouse (that was fun) and the second, last week for the bar's Cocktails and Cupcakes menu. And that's what's actually cementing this as three stars rather than me leaning towards four. It just wasn't that great. Awful frosting, dry sponge and cocktails that were almost undrinkable. There's nothing good about that and had I been paying for it, I'd have felt short changed. It's £19.50 for one cocktail and two cupcakes. In a bar that doesn't feel that exclusive. It was actually quite messy. I don't want anywhere that charges over a tenner a cocktail to be messy. But, the staff are lovely. And if you do like the vibe in the bar, you'll probably quite like it here. But I'm not convinced by it. read more

i am really surprised that this is not higher in the rankings on here because i was so happy and pleased with my stay at the mayfair. i have reviewed the Amba restaurant on a separated review so please see that if you are here to eat. The actual hotel is very spacious and modern, with lots of marble flooring and chandeliers in the halls. The staff are really helpful and take you to your room and show you round the hotel if you like. The rooms aren't that big and that is a fairly big flaw when paying such high prices, and also the views are terrible from most rooms as you are facing inwards to the hotel itself. I have not actually stayed here but have had many a drink and lunch in the Mayfair Bar. This is quite a trendy bar that gets pretty crowded on a Friday night, full of the beautiful people, out to impress. Pretty expensive all round - they only serve doubles of spirits which they don't advertise, so don't be surprised to spend the best part of £10 on a V&T, I've seen a few customers get angry about this (in fact I overheard one customer insist that the bar tender gave him a single measure and the reply was of course we can do you a single measure but we will still charge you for a double, because that's all our tills will accept. read more

When the quality of a hotel is so bad that it motivates one to write about it for the first time, you know you are dealing with a problem. I arrived off a trans Atlantic flight earlier than allotted checking times and was told no rooms were available. That is fair and understandable but the promise to follow up with me when they did come available never materialized. Front desk attitude was aloof...and left me feeling like I was doing the hotel a favor by gracing them with my presence. Porters, when I did eventually get a room, took forever to deliver my bags. Rooms were tiny and expensive, probably a casualty of London, but furniture was cheap and the sense of luxury diluted by the poor quality. Televisions small too, entertainment selection dated. The bathrooms were so small I had to turn sideways to brush my teeth and rinse my mouth....the design is very poor with the sink sitting recessed between two narrow walls. The location is excellent and close to great restaurants and attractions. This is about the only good thing about the hotel. Even the lobby restaurant was a tough experience with uncomfortable seating that puts each table literally on top of the one next to it. I ended up having to talk over the table sitting elbow length away from me to be able to say anything to my partner. The hotel's strategy is modern chic with a minimalist style but ends up being modern disaster with a bad attitude. read more

Sorry I asked hubby to return here as opposed to another well-known local hotel we've also stayed at many times (Mayfair's bathrooms are large for London, nice spa/workout room). It was totally packed and since we arrived 3 hrs prior to check-out, no rooms yet available. Excited to be back in London, we tried our best to kill time by staggering about for coffee and windowshopping, but cold rain drove us back in to lobby to wait another 2 hrs post-check-out time. An amazing guest relations mgr named Oana Bara offered a room that was ready but smaller than what we had reserved/paid for. Husband wanted to wait for a different room so while we waited, she offered us coffee in the restaurant, escorted us to see a room we might like, showed pictures of other rooms/suites (btw- brilliant way to show off your property and possibly generate future bookings of more expensive rooms) and kept us posted on being upgraded as soon as room was free. She went above and beyond our entire stay, continued to check in both face-to-face and in a call, offered to find different rooms, informed us on status of rooms, etc. Oana is a shining example of genuine, gracious hospitality under enormous pressure! In order to placate another visibly angry guest (and btw, there were many), a different desk clerk gave away Rm #521 we had been told was ours. Instead we were shown to #121- seemed nice enough, despite the non-working towel rack and the toilet paper dangling from the smoke detector directly over our bed-which housekeeping apparently either put there or overlooked (thereby raising the rather unpleasant question: what else mayve been overlooked/not cleaned?) After unpacking and showering, we soon realized the room would be intolerable due to the constant loud slamming of a metal security door a few feet away. On our way out to dinner reservations, we notified Antonio at the desk we would have to be moved to a different room. Instead of responding with a civil "So sorry the room wasnt satisfactory" or "Lets see what can be done", he improbably replied "Well, You should've told me sooner!" (I politely informed him we were jetlagged, had been given the room in lieu of #521 promised us hours earlier, and didn't recognize the problem until we lay down for a few min to rest). Having been polite to the point of obsequiousness til this point (because I was grateful to have any place to lay down besides the lobby), I finally got annoyed when asked "Can you go pack up right now? We need the room, we're busy" (as though we hadnt recognized this!). I explained we were late to our dinner reservations, and certainly would prefer NOT to have to re-pack everything and move after dinner, exhausted and having already waited 5 hrs to get into a room in the first place. When he said "don't take it out on me!" I assured him I didn't hold him responsible for the hotel structure and noise, but there was NO way he was previously been unaware of the problem/had no prior complaints about the room. After dinner we busted our butts to pack up (they needed the room for another guest, dont you know?) and move to the next room on 7th floor- not unattractive decor, large bathroom, sans a toilet paper chandelier. However- altho much quieter than the security door slamming on the 1st floor, we were awakened thruout the night by periodic loud tapping/knocking sounds from plumbing or heating system. And on the 3 windows which look out at another wall of windows facing ours, no sheer blinds or drapes for privacy?!? C'mon guys! Suggestion: Train your staff by a) Have them follow Oana and Stan (one of the charming and helpful concierges!) for a day, and b) Force managers/staff to spend a night in #120 or 121. THEN feel free to give guests the option to stay there- fine if you only want to use the room for activities other than sleep, or are deaf. Save yourselves and guests the time, grief, and stress. only reason I didnt give the Mayfair a single star is because we understand it is Christmas and the place was totally jammed. Warning, guests: GO INTO YOUR ROOM TO INSPECT IT BEFORE UNPACKING. Take earplugs. And if u visit during busy season: be prepared to wait- at check-in, the concierge desk, and restaurant. Breakfast was an absolute zoo! Good food and decent service, but if you dont get there early, be prepared to play a contact sport. We have NEVER seen so many irate guests arguing with desk staff in any hotel, in any of our travels, incl New York! Beautiful property but the service was really spotty (delightful exceptions noted- incl the sweet housekeeper who cleaned our room on the 27th). These should be easy fixes- put up cheap sheer curtains. And give a simple apology when appropriate, rather than blaming your beleagured guests. Sad to say, I will think twice-or more- before coming back here. read more
