I hadn't been here since covid, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Make no mistake, this place is GOOD. I had lunch here on a Sunday. There are several menu approaches, which is great to accommodate all budgets. My companion and I decided on some entrees - Scallops (fabulous) and King Prawn dumplings (great), then we shared the Duck main with the cauliflower side dish. It was a happy and delicious selection. We really enjoyed everything. The service was very good and the whole experience was lovely. Thank you to all, particularly our server Emeline. Our drinks were a Rose Spritz cocktail and Dirty Martini to start, then a bottle of King Valley Pinot Grigio, again very good. I wouldn't hesitate to come again. Well done to everyone. read more

I had lunch with my sister here yesterday. it's been a year or two since my last visit (COVID of course) but it was as good, if not better, than I remember. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. Thoroughly recommend the oysters with tuna and caviar, and the bug tails. The steak special was a delight. We were spoilt for choice. The French rosé we had was a perfect accompaniment to entree and the Barossa Shiraz perfect for the steak. The soufflé to finish was exquisite. Service from start to finish was exemplary. You can tell about a restaurant the same as a person, you don't really know them until they have a challenging night. I have been to the Taxi Kitchen several times for meals with my company and with my wife, and normally it is good. Tonight they were off. My wife and I had a very good tuna appetizer as well as a Wagyu pot stickers app, and eagerly awaited our beef eye fillets, both ordered medium rare. When they came they looked great, but upon cutting into mine it was medium well and my wife's was medium. The flavor was cooked right out and the sauce didn't help the situation. We didn't complain, and quite frankly I didn't look for them to comp anything, but the chef, or rather the line cook, said they were cooked perfectly. I was really sad to eat my last meal ever here but I couldn't possibly come back. I would steer clear of TK. read more

Staff knew his dishes inside out and was patient to help my mates and I pick what we wanna eat. Came here for an express lunch with a few girlfriends as part of the food and wine festival. The food was delicious, minimal options though and you can't see it ahead of time which may make it challenging if you are a vegetarian. After seeing our neighbouring diners entrees arrive we toyed with what courses to get but settled on all of us having main and desert. I had the spatchcock and seasonal salad the others had the salmon and zucchini. Both dishes were well presented and tasty. Portions were small but perfect for lunch. The desert was definitely the best part of the meal and I don't have a particularly sweet tooth. The donuts were a little disappointing and appeared slopped onto the plate but the frozen lemon meringue pie was sublime and more than made up for it. It was tangy with a cool ice cream like texture surrounded by a fluffy pillow of chilled meringue. Mmm I could have that again right now. The restaurant itself is sleek and what you would expect from a modern Australian fine dining establishment. It has exceptional views over the yarra and the arts center which make it a great location if you are out to impress someone special whether it be for business or pleasure. Taxi Dining Room might just be the most prestigious and amazing dining experiences I've ever had. Going there for a joint family birthday was a fantastic experience. We were wined and dined literally with an eclectic degustation menu that incorporated both their Japanese and modern Australian cuisine. Each meal complimented the next as we thoroughly enjoyed the entertaining explanations of the 11 different items. Personally, I was impressed most at how swift and quick the meals were coming out for a busy Saturday night where we had a great spot right towards the back in a semi-open outdoor area on a balmy night. With the rain beating down on us C and I only had a short dash from Spencer Street across St. Kilda Road to the Transport Hotel in Federation Square. On the first floor of this glass cube is Taxi, a restaurant with a good reputation. I had phoned ahead only two hours before and had got a reservation for an early dinner on a Saturday night before we went to a Melbourne Festival Show. The food is fusion of contemporary Australian and Japanese cuisine. It is perfectly platted, it looks beautiful and the patters are novel. The food tastes marvelous, my taste buds were individually thanking me with every mouthful. We shared their sashimi special for the entrée. C had the vegetarian platter for her main and I had one of the main fish dishes with a curry rice and side dishes that I struggle to describe but want more. We had also had their deserts and were so glad that we did, as they were an amazingly amazing culinary experience, but then the whole meal was. The service is so friendly but elegant and attentive. The décor is a classy minimal save for the magnificent views of the Yarra River. As a table for two we had a great view. We watched the weather from our table; C had the more optimistic view and could see the clouds clearing in the west. read more

Taxi Dining Room is located in Fed Square above Taxi Bar. It's a big space with high ceilings and louvred glass walls on three sides looking over the Yarra, Flinders Street Station and St Paul's Cathedral - an iconic Melbourne view. I ordered the $130 tasting menu opting to choose my own drinks rather than take the $90 matched wines option. First course was a little appetiser of spanner crab with frozen coconut and plum wine. Beautifully presented and an interesting combination of flavours, but a little too subtle for my taste, maybe as a result of the pastise I had as an aperitif. I finished my drink at about the same time as the crab so I asked the waitress to suggest something from the cocktail menu. She recommended the Hakutsuru Western Ginjo - an interesting combo of sake, Belvedere, Elderflower and Lillet. Next up was the sticky pork with a braised scallop and nam jim red chilli dressing. The chilli was made with vinegar giving it an extra kick that was nicely offset by the little side salad of beans, shredded radish (I think) and coriander. The pork was perfectly cooked - not overly fatty - and worked really well with the dressing. The scallop was almost an afterthought for me, maybe included to add another layer of texture to the course rather than for its taste which I thought was a little overwhelmed by the other flavours. But overall a lovely dish with really well balanced flavours. Next was a couple of thin, lightly seared pieces of snapper on a bed of enoki mushrooms and tofu cubes covered in an intensely rich red miso broth. Gorgeous and innovative twist on the traditional miso soup. Atlantic salmon with yabby dumplings followed. I almost asked the waiter if I could replace this as I'm not a big fan of salmon. Glad I didn't. The salmon was served on a pear puree and was perfectly cooked - just a little crusty on the outside - with a side of onions, fennel and Japanese mushrooms. For me, the yabby dumpling was the best part of this course. Strong, almost gamey flavour - could have eaten a plate of them. Finished my cocktail and ordered another - William's Poire Epices. This was a combination of Belverdere, pear purée, lemon juice and 5 spice syrup. Sweet, delicious and really refreshing. The last of the savoury courses was Wagyu porterhouse served with horseradish Creme Fraiche and a soy based dipping sauce that also included mirren along with about 10 other ingredients, and a pile of rocket infused with pieces of pickled ginger. Delicious. The steak was tender and tasty and rare and the sauce complemented it beautifully. By now I was more than full but still able to find room for desert - hazelnut praline parfait with fresh figs and plum sorbet. Great finish. Taxi is very good. The service is attentive without being annoying, my waiter obviously knew the recipes for each course and explained them very well, the atmosphere is classy but laid back (loved the lounge music playing softly in the background throughout the meal), and while not quite up there with Attica for out of the box ingredient/flavour combinations, a solid degustation with a couple of real stand out dishes - the red miso broth and the sticky pork. read more

The staff were just so lovely. They went out of their way to be nice. That type of nice is rare. I LOVE it when people are nice. The wine list is very extensive. I was embarrased to have selected one of the most affordable, but the sommelier assured us it was a good wine regardless. We were celebrating a small anniversary and at the end of the meal they presented us with some exquisite chocolates that said 'Happy Anniversary'. A very nice touch. I cannot rave about Taxi enough. The food was very fresh, incredibly well presented, rich, tasty, aromatic, hearty...warming. It just filled me with goodness. Taxi featured modern Australian food perfect for a good night out. The drinks are in plentiful supply and food was exquisite. Firstly the special gyozas of the day came out first. The texture of them were soft and crispy just perfect. The meat mixture inside tasted fresh and used the good pork meat rather than usual dumpling restaurants which use the fat and mince parts of the meat. Absolute perfection Next came out the Yarra Valley poussin. The chicken was cooked well although the breast and wing were a bit dry. The hot and sour sauce tasted more like sweet and sour sauce and didn't compliment the well cooked chicken. A little disappointing for a restaurant with high standards. Overall the meal was great but no excellent flavours stood out and a few minor disappointments but overall great and might come back once in a blue moon as the food was costly. read more

The chef at Taxi has an impressive resume, working through the ranks at Melbourne stalwarts such as Stokehouse, Ezard and Circa. With this in mind, it's rather beyond me why I don't love this place. To be fair, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the food and I've had some of the best champagne of my life here. The service is generally impeccable and the view... well, perhaps the view is the issue. It's distractingly phenomenal. I'd even suggest timing your booking to watch the sun set. On my first occasion here, there was someone in our group who was lactose intolerant. On the whole, this is typically a non-issue. Maybe this is where Taxi fell down for me, but in an attempt to cater to both my friend's anti-lactose standpoint and my gluten-free situation we ended up being served essentially the same dish twice in a degustation menu. Honestly, given they a) had notice of our dietary requirements and b) are charging upwards of $25 for entrees and $45+ for mains, I expect more creativity. At any rate, the restaurant IS beautiful and if you're visiting Melbourne it's definitely worth a visit. read more

Before my visit on All Hallows' Eve, I had not dined in at Taxi Dining Room, located on the first floor of the Transport Hotel in Federation Square since 2007. At that time, it not only came highly recommended to me and the person who was whispering in my ear at that time that was saying that restaurant was the new "it" place may have exaggerated a bit. Considering that I was doing whirlwind weekend tours of Melbourne bars and restaurants back then, I was looking for something really special and it never really left a positive or a negative impression really. Of course that was 2007 and what a difference five years makes. Back in the bygone era of the noughties Taxi Dining Room couldn't stop winning awards. It even managed to procure two of the coveted hats that restaurants seem to lose sleep over these days and drive mild-mannered chefs to alcoholism, depression and despair. Like with federal politics and Prime Ministers seemingly, restaurant hats come and go on a whim. Sometimes on merit, sometimes for other nefarious reasons. Whatever is the case, should the dining public re-establish a love affair with Taxi Dining Room now, they will not regret it. The dining area remains bright, meticulously organised and as welcoming as the staff were when I presented myself with the epicurean emo. Views can be enjoyed depending on the perspective where you sit out to the Botanic Gardens, Southbank and the beautiful (sic) Yarra River or the skyline of the CBD. It was the start of a relaxed afternoon and when I learned that a seven-course degustation was on offer, I became as the proverbial dog with a bone. Proper seven-course degustation menus are seemingly rare as hens teeth for lunch so I knew I was in for an experience. I began to ruminate about the table configuration and how appropriate it was. Not only did it make the most of the floorspace which benefits the restaurant but the tables were not so close together that you would feel like you were in other patron's personal space or be able to eavesdrop on their conversation. After my experience at The Press Club, I have become hypersensitive to being packed in like sardines in a crushed tin box as Radiohead would moan. Quickly I learned that our server, Laura, and sommelier, Owen, exuded professionalism and were quite willing to go on our relaxed, yet wild, ride through the menu and around the world with the wines offering cold hard facts about the grapes, the reasons for the pairings and also trivia that kept us intrigued. The meal started with Whiting sashimi with Kombu dressing. After recent trips to Nobu and Koko and thinking of the best seafood dishes that I had, this dish, not only the presentation but the dressing made it taste spectacular and be equal with the best of the best that the aforementioned specialists have on offer. The pairing of 1999 Duval-Leroy 'Authentis' from France certainly enhanced an already divine start to proceedings. Panko crumbed pork cheek with Ngoc Cham and Prawn dust followed. The pairing of Dr Burklin Wolf 'Wachenheimer' Riesling, 2010 from Germany I thought was bold but also a great compliment. This is a very complex dish with many flavours competing for superiority on your palate however they were not intense flavours which allowed the wine to really do its job and highlight the goodness. Probably the most intriguing, if not special, of the dishes followed. Szechuan broth with Asian herbs and Szechuan duck. The broth was unlike anything that I have ever had before. The Szechuan duck would have been enjoying a happy afterlife bathing in this sea of flavour. Like with the Whiting earlier, Owen made a great choice with the Barbeito 'Old Reserve' Verdelho Medium Dry 10yo. - Madeira - bold and classy and indeed a winner. This is my favourite dish and pairing of the experience which has continued to haunt me long past Halloween became a day in the past this year. Cone Bay Barramundi with tempura mussels and garlic choi sum followed with a Denton 'View Hill' Pinot Noir, 2008 from our own Yarra Valley. Normally I remain sceptical of pairing Barramundi with Pinot Noir however this worked well and proves that if you lose yourself at times and trust the experts that you will not only gain a better appreciation for various matched flavours but also learn something at the same time. Rabbit saddle with Lup chong and ginger followed with a 2010 Cape Mentelle Zinfandel from the Margaret River. It had been a while since I had a nice Zinfandel and I see why Owen decided to match it with the rabbit. The rabbit was prepared properly and really renewed my passion for wanting to eat the pest. Another wine, Gros Nore Bandol, 2008 (Mouvedre) was also on offer to taste with this dish and when poured directly from the Magnum, I felt like I was in a hedonistic paradise. Chef Tony Twitchett certainly has Taxi Dining Room on track to not only returning to the glory days but in my opinion exceeding what was achieved in the past. read more

All together we ordered 9 dishes & I must say the seafood dishes & kangaroo definitely stood out. I am unsure when we will be back in Melbourne; however, we will definitely be back here when we are! Next time though, I think we will just order all starters and entrees. Both my partner and I agreed that those were better than the mains....delicious, none the less. We had a terrible experience at Taxi Kitchen. The party seated at 6.20 ordered 10-15 mins later and after asking numerous times, the mains came out at 7.50. We were all staving by then and unfortunately extremely disappointed when we dug into our food. The steaks were tough even though they were decent cuts, the rib eye was actually undercooked but still managed to be very chewy, duck and quail was dry, even the chips were dry (which is technically illegal). We debated sending some of the dishes back but that applied to half the table and we didn't want to wait another hr for our food again. The cocktails were nice and the waitstaff apologised when they saw most of the plates half-eaten when collected, but by then we just wanted to get out and go to one of the many other awesome eateries in the city to fill ourselves up. read more

But fear not, the Roast Collection is here to keep us all toasty warm and well fed. Boasting a huge calendar of events throughout June it makes getting from one Food & Wine Festival to the next (March 2014) a little bit easier to take. And with Victorian produce given centre stage, now is the time to PVOYT. What's that you ask? Put Victoria On Your Table. Yes it's a bit of a mouthful, just like the fantastic duck tasting menu being served up every Sunday this month at Taxi in Federation Square. In fact it's more than a mouthful, it's a five-course wine-matched extravaganza - Ducks in a Row - which sees executive chef Tony Twitchett put Greg and Jodi Clarke's Great Ocean Ducks to excellent use. And these aren't just any ducks - these are pampered Aylesbury ducks. They roam free by day and sleep on straw by night. In summer they eat strawberries from a neighbouring grove and, in winter, apples from the orchard. You get the idea. Combining the mix of Asian and Australian flavours and cooking styles for which Taxi is renowned, we start off with coffee-smoked duck nigiri sushi with a teriyaki glaze. To our surprise, rich and fatty slices of duck really do go well with nose-tingling wasabi. This dish was served alongside a glass of Canard-Duchêne champagne. It's not from Victoria, but the choice of bubbles are proof that everything on this menu really has been planned with the duck as the hero. Next, spicy duck dumplings with hoi sin sauce, matched with a gorgeously buttery Principia chardonnay from Mornington Peninsula. Slightly crispy wonton wrappers gave way to juicy duck meat, a great savoury offering with a hint of heat from the chillies. A bit of theatre next with the Sichaun duck soup. Bowls of Thai basil, coriander and water spinach arrive at the table - the ingredients are then submerged in a dark, unami-driven broth that is poured from a teapot. Such a simple dish but it looked stunning. Made on the bones of the duck, it is good to see the whole bird being put to use - it's bill to tail eating. The next dish - roasted Sichuan duck with fresh lime and sriracha salt - features duck that has been slowly steamed before being fried. As a result, the skin has retained a satisfying crispness while the meat is meltingly tender. Not surprisingly, it is a Taxi stalwart. It is served with the The Story pinot noir from Port Campbell, the ducks stamping (should it be waddling) ground. To finish, a stick-to-your-teeth green apple tarte tartan - where's the duck, you say? Think of this dessert as a tribute to the ducks, after all, apples are one of their favourite snacks. read more

The caramel pork with coconut was so good but the dish that really stood out was the duck-it was so crispy on the outside but tender in the middle. The bug tales were great too. It was the first time I had been to Taxi and I was excited. Oddly enough I have been to Transit many a time but never stopped off at the middle level. It didn't disappoint. I loved the beautiful marble bar in the middle of the restaurant and, of course, the views of Southbank. Food wise, also top notch...we had the sticky pork belly, crispy barramundi and jam souffle...however I wouldn't put it up there with the best in town. Nevertheless I think this is a neat date spot if you're aiming to impress :) read more

Foodwise Taxi almost gets full marks but unfortunately loses a star for it's disappointing Cherry Souffle. This was my first time eating at the well hyped Fed Square eatery and I was completely impressed with the down to earth staff, their eagerness to accommodate and their pleasant demeanours! A member in our party, after an impromptu invite (after one of our friends cancelled), happened to be wearing thongs and the maitre de didn't even blink an eye (which could almost make up for the lost star). Anyway, I wouldn't advise dressing on the downside because the place feels upscale and the crowd is generally dressed better than your average street walker in jeans. The restaurant's well designed with large windows spanning the perimeter so you get a nice view outside, there's a subtle elegance about the place yet it feels comfortable and inviting. For a Saturday night I was surprised at how empty it was. The menu's well equipped with plenty of surf'n'turf choices I went for the following... Entree - scallops with chili mayo - very good although the salad slightly overpowered the scallops, I liked this dish though and would order it again (just eat the scallops and salad separately). Main - Wagyu Porterhouse - absolutely dellicious, cooked perfectly, tender, juicy, flavourful, highly recommended. Friend's entree - sushi special with mango - excellent, loved the mango with sushi, flavours blended well together, delicious. Friends shared the Porterhouse special with bacon - this was okay but nowhere near as good as the Wagyu, just get the Wagyu if you're contemplating this dish. Cheese plate - three cheeses - all good (just ask what type of cheeses they have on the menu in case you don't like a particular type) Cherry souffle - not good. The souffle itself was cooked perfectly, the accompanying chocolate ice-cream was excellent but the Cherry just didn't work. It was kindof sourish or just plain weird. I would've preferred chocolate, vanilla or any other flavoured souffle, This was the only disappointment of the night. Wines by the glass, Trinity, Shiraz.... were excellent. I do plan to return, hopefully there'll be a better souffle on the menu. read more

Good but not amazing. I've been here before and after the renovations/menu changed and ... I hate being that person... but I liked it better before. Recently we came here for a early dinner after work on a weekday and while the service was exceptional the food was just so-so. I requested to be sat at the bar overlooking the river and arts centre and we had some great moments of people watching in the hectic after work peak hour while sipping Rose from above. We started with some seafood appetisers - scallop and oyster. While the scallop had a beautiful flavoursome sauce (habanero mayo?) the texture of the scallop was not as nice as that of other restaurants in the same price range. We also had the Sake washed tuna and wild mushrooms with a son-in-law egg. The mushrooms were beautifully done, the sauce was rich and decadent and the egg was the perfect 'done-ness' but it did make me miss the old Taxi spicy congee and son-in-law egg combo. The tuna was the biggest disappointment, the fish was.... fishy, it wasn't a prime cut and to be frank - it put the 'ew' in sinew. At this point we were pretty bummed, we skipped mains and got some fries instead (which wasn't served with any sauce, we had to ask for some aioli and ketchup ourselves). Overall it's more about eating with your eyes than pleasing your tastebuds here. I would bring interstate or overseas friends here for some divine decor and views but not the modern-Australian feed of their dreams. read more

The service was slooooow. They think very highly of themselves as some kind of food experts, but the food did not taste that good. Mine was so bland I had to ask for soy soyce. Came in for lunch for one. Was seated by the window looking at the gorgeous view. I had the sake infused tuna and was so good. The yuzu jelly really popped the flavours and the pesto complimented the tuna perfectly. Daikon salad added a nice crunch and also acted as a palette cleanser in between bites. For dessert, the wait staff recommended the lemon curd with meringue, it was so pretty and tasted so good! A great balance of sweet and tartness. Expensive but very very tasty. Easily the best meal we had in Australia. We sat at the window facing the river and watched the rowing crew teams practice while the sun set. We are big fans of bread and they gave us these thick slices of their crusted bread loaf with butter, which was delicious. Our drinks were also amazing. We then started with a plate of cured meats which had some tasty pickled watermelon that tickled our taste buds. For dinner, we shared the duck and porterhouse steak main dishes, with a half order of greens. Loved them all! Unfortunately we had no room for dessert, what a shame! The only thing that put me off about this place was when the host who seated us gave us judgmental looks as we walked in. He asked if we knew what the restaurant was about, handing us a menu so we can see the pricing. His explanation when he handed us the menu was so that we knew that they were "VERY DIFFERENT" from the bar/kitchen downstairs. I was pretty offended and am assuming he said that bc we had backpacks and sneakers on (full day of sightseeing, sorry I wasn't in my Sunday best and wearing my inheritance around my neck). He came over later to make small talk but I was still pretty miffed. The tasty food did somewhat soothe my injured pride and our server was friendly. So if you can suffer thru some snoot and have some cash to drop on some amazing food, definitely stop here! read more

Shocked this place isn't rated higher. Had an amazing dinner here. So good in fact we came back the next day for lunch! The chefs really know what they are doing. We weren't completely sold on the menu and descriptions, but once the food started coming out there wasn't a single complaint. From the tempura mussels to the crispy pork with scallops everything was delicious. We especially loved the pumpkin tortellini and crab dumpling in a lemongrass broth. Great attentive service. Extensive cocktail and wine list. We only spent 3 days in Melbourne and ate here twice! read more
