I have learned a long time ago to keep a cooler in the trunk for when you find a cool place unexpectedly. I'm always looking on Yelp for local meat market places when I'm out and about because I'm always looking for meat sticks #1 and #2 anything else that catches my eye. This place is pretty nice with good looking fresh meats, cheeses, meat sticks, sausages, hams and everything else. Jack pot, habanero beef snack sticks which will do because I'm always looking for hot snack sticks. A nice ham steak caught my eye because a good ham steak with breakfast is always nice breakfast. This was a nice find and I'm glad I stopped because breakfast will be good with that ham. read more

I like to source local meat while out camping. We stumbled upon this market some years back while near Devil's Lake and have been back a few times. What's better than a freshly cut ribeye over open flame? Check the freezer for other cuts to take home! They do have a nice selection of custom brats and other specialty items. You can't go wrong buying from a place with a huge cow on the roof. read more

Tried to give them another chance went there several times to get steaks. Once I asked if they had any specials going apparently daring to ask questions is an affront to there tough steaks. Everytime the steaks are flavorless and tough. I'm miss the meat market in Urbana-Champaign where they sold quality beef. They were also great full to get your business. We always bring a case of their regular seasoning home because it is awesome and not overpowering - always lets the quality of the meat shine through. Must-have item here that I haven't had in years: the beef jerky. Wednesday they are closed for slaughter and I highly recommend ordering some for Thurs or Fri pickup b/c they tend to run out by the weekend during the summer months when all us crazy city-folk come barging through town. Worth the trip from Madison, for the prices, quality and meat. - Fresh cuts. - Able to season or not be seasoned - Beef, Pork, Chicken and some much more I cannot remember as I think back. When I was a kid this was "the fancy meat place." It's been around for as long as I can remember, and some of my earliest memories are of taking a drive over to Baraboo with my dad to get some meat. Hell, I even did a project for an agri-science course in high school where I interviewed one of the managers here. Long story short, I've been around here. Since, I've moved away and even flirted with vegetarianism. I'm not the meat-eater I used to be, but I've been back in the area for work a lot lately and The Meat Market brought out my inner carnivore this time around. The best day to get there is Thursday because that's the day they put out fresh beef jerky. It's honestly the best jerky you'll ever get. It's tough and chewy, but not in a rough over-processed way. It comes in long strips rather than the chunks you'll get in a lot of beef jerky. The flavor is incredible--the salt binds to the meat and creates an elaborate, delicious flavor. Cooked well, their steaks are in a league of their own. They have most cuts you could ever ask for, and big thick pieces as well. They also carry Carr Valley cheese curds. I don't need to explain why that's such a plus to any self-respecting Wisconsinite, but just in case...these things are as fresh as you could possibly get them without going to the production facility in La Valle. To cut things a bit short, The Meat Market has some of the freshest best quality meat available. The price is a bit too high to make it a frequent source of ingredients for most people, but if you're going to treat yourself this is a good place to start. read more

This place has been a Baraboo institution for as long as I can remember. Significantly more expensive than supermarkets in town, so not a place to shop for your everyday fair, but if you want a steakhouse quality piece of meat, this place has no rival. They are closed on Wednesdays (for slaughtering) and Sunday. I am surprised this place doesn't get more Yelp attention. If you are in Baraboo area looking for high quality meat for your cookout, this is the only place to stop. read more

I have been bringing my venison here for years, even after moving to MN. I have tried other places closer to home and have always come back to the Meat Market! I have tried a number of products and have NEVER been disappointed. Their sausage is phenomenal, as are the brats and weiners. My family loves the ring baloney. Whenever I've shared their products with others they always comment on how good they are. My only disappointment is that this year they took the venison bacon of the menu. read more

Both of my experiences have been really awful here. The first time the almost crushed my very small and extremely valuable suckling pigs out of pure airheadness- opening the door the the kill room allowing two huge pigs to ram there way into my smaller cage and nearly crushing my (extremely valuable) pigs to death. They then screamed prodded and kicked the larger hogs out (not without a struggle with 3 grown men) They ruined my crate, never apologized, didn't give me any discount on the pigs and tried to make excuses and defend there errors. I did not want to return but my new regular processor didn't have a date for me when I need a couple of pigs processed. So...the second time they told me the right date but wrong day. Even though they knew it was me they ( the guys who's pigs they almost crushed) they denied allowing me to be 10 minutes late AFTER telling me the wrong day. Once again instead of compromising or apologizing the woman, Michelle, TOLD me what the gentleman I talked to said to me, which was wrong. She then said " you brought your pigs in last time on a tuesday didn't you?" as if I was supposed to remember there kill schedule from 4 months earlier, and the only time I went. In addition to my personal experiences, the fact that they don't have separate stalls for animals, meaning your pigs, for example, are grouped with other unknown pigs, stressing them and allowing them to fight with each other, is a big factor. Finally seeing how they handled a pig in the wrong place (on top of mine in a small crate) by shocking, kicking and screaming is a definite deal breaker. Not only will I never bring my livestock there again I will go out of my way to encourage others to choose a different processor than the meat market in Baraboo. read more
