I'd give it 3.5. Environment: very bright and there were all kinds of meats, you name it, they have it and lots of people were there to help when needed. Staff: very friendly and when I asked some questions they were very informative and kind. Food: I so far 2 out of the 4 sausages I bought. The bratwurst was very salty for me, like overly salty to the point that I couldn't taste much flavor of the sausage itself. I know sausages are supposed to be salty but a bit too much for me. The second one was the Mediterranean lamb sausage. It was very good and it had nice spices too but you can taste a bit of the gamey lamb flavor. This was not too salty, it was good. read more

What's better than a play on words like the "Meating Place?" A play in my mouth with pulled pork is for sure better. But it's funny because they got all the meats here and a butcher shop next door. So they literally do the meating. You get it? Let's cut to the chase. This place is high level. I only had the pulled pork and elk chili (not pictured). If you like sweet bbq sauce and elite pulled pork, then you'll love this. The elk chili had some major flavor and kick. I guess I prefer elk chili to regular chili now? We love this local meat shop, it has evolved from a small mom and pop place a short distance away to a larger and multiservice shop. They have an excellent selection of meat (Beef, Pork, Chicken and more), sliced smoked meats (Pastrami for the Win), pepperoni, jerky, food for dogs, twice baked potatoes (you must get some) and some local products for sale. The employees are super helpful, polite and quick to serve you. As for as prices, honestly, they are very competitive, they may not have sales but I feel we get a good price for the quality of the cuts. If you are looking for a place to process your game you have hunted they provide that service too. If you want good meats you should stop by and try them out. It has a very pleasant environment with ample space and a large selection of nice looking meats. From my experience, I found counter people that were not very knowledgeable when asked questions about a cut or the available offerings. I had called before making the trip there inquiring if they had pork spare ribs. The person who took the call at first didn't know what I was asking for and then after going to ask came back and said they did. I drove there only to find out they don't have spare ribs, just baby back and St. Louis cut. OK I get the St Louis. While I was there looking at some other items I had conversations with two different people at different counters and both had to go ask someone for an answer to my simple enquiries. Like, " Is your brisket choice or prime? " That said.... It is one of just a few meat markets in the PDX metro area with the selection they have. read more

Waiting at the counter to be called next and another customer walked up and the employee started taking their order and when I spoke up to the employee the young lady gave me attitude with a dirty look. It's all about the meat! I can't believe how much I love this place because it's literally just a butcher shop - a place where you can buy fresh local meat. But I LOVE it. I really do. I think it's partially the branding and look & feel of the place that give it such a great quality, local, casual, approachable Oregon vibe. Service is friendly, attentive, super helpful, easy. It's easy to get to and there's plenty of parking. On this particular visit, we started out by ordering sandwiches from the Meating Place Cafe and then took a quick walk across the parking lot to the butcher shop to buy bacon, smoke pork chops and pepperoni sticks. I also highly recommend their crab cakes but we didn't buy them on this trip. They carry a variety of meats and bones so I've included a bunch of photos of raw meat which is seems weird but it's meant to be helpful so you'll know what to expect. Lol. read more

I recently had an elk processed at The Meating Place. I grew up in a family that did their own butchering. My dad is very particular about what goes in the freezer (boned out, silver skin removed, all fat trimmed off, and all connective tissue removed). The Meating Place did not disappoint. This place is stellar! Why didn't they exist when I worked in Hillsboro? Now I find myself trekking out there just to buy high quality meat, and of course, stay and enjoy a meal. First, let's discuss the butcher counter. It's filled with gorgeous prime cuts of regional and imported meats. Lamb from Reister Farms, kobe and waygu beef from Japan, local pork, all cuts of steak from Painted Hills, in-house dried steak, ground elk, beef kabobs, chicken (even seasoned and prepared) house made sausages, bacon, ham, and Dungeness crab when in season. All higher quality than you would find at a grocery store. Because of how they anre raised and fed, they are healthier for you, and yes, you can taste the difference! They even have house made entrees, dips, sides, and sell various salts and rubs. This is my kind of store! The cafe side is equally impressive. Obviously, everything they offer is made from the meat they sell. BBQ pork sandwiches, Cubans, Club sandwiches, killer burgers, French dip with caramelized onions (divine) and the best BLT, especially during the summer when tomatoes are local and in season. They even have daily specials making it even more challenging to make a decision. Now that I've had their Reuben, made with their own house smoke pastrami, topped with melted Swiss, sauerkraut and slathered with thousand island dressing, it's hard for me to order anything else. Its fabulous! And big enough for two! The best option is to go with a friend, each order a different sandwich, and share. Just writing this review is making me hungry. This place just blew my mind and earned five stars. I have come here for years and drive all the way from SE Portland to do it. We get raw dog food here and it is the best. They also have excellent meat. You can get high quality, local, humanely raised meat here at a good price. The place is clean, there prices fair, and the selection good. What takes it over there top is the service. HOLY COW! I wanted some chicken and was debating on what I wanted. I had settled on bone in thighs as the best balance of price and labor when the butcher offered to cut up a whole bird for me. At no extra cost. Consider the price per pound: boneless/skinless thighs: $9. Bone in: $6 whole bird: $5. Or, 2 chicken quarters, two breasts, 2 wings. PLUS the backbone and wing tips in a bag for stock: $5 a pound. That is amazing!! I knew they were great but this is thrilling! So, buy some meat at the Meating Place and see what you can offer you!! read more

Harvested my first ever buck deer in the end of October, went back and forth with whether to butcher it ourselves or take it in to have the professionals do it. Decided paying to have it packed and labeled by professionals would be the way to go. Called around and a lot of places were closed as it was Sunday, called these guys and they were open, I let them know I harvested my first buck and wasn't familiar with how to go about getting it done or how they charge, full weight or weight of meat at the end, so I asked that they could explain to me all the details. The fella on the phone said yeah real easy, we have a drive through in the back of the building, you back in, ring a bell, we'll get it out of the truck onto our hook to weigh it, take information and we handle it from there, Price is per pound of hanging weight. Nothing more. I drive an hour and 15 minutes to Hillsboro, wait in line, back in to the spot and a guy comes out, we lift the tarp and the guy says "we're only doing skinned deer this year" turns and walks away from me to the next guy. Completely disregarded. Before we left I said to them that in the future when someone calls and asks for details that HAVING THE DEER SKINNED was a very important detail to tell the customer. He didn't say a word back to me. Got back in the truck and drove an hour and 15 minutes back home. Pretty piss poor experience. read more

This is the place to go if you want high quality meats. They have an excellent variety - chicken, beef, pork, lamb, elk, oxtail, ham hocks, soup bones, even some of the harder to find cuts of things. The chicken breasts are some of the most tender I've ever had the pleasure to cook (and eat!), and the ground beef is noticeably tastier than what I get at Costco. You get what you pay for and the prices here reflect that, but to me it's worth it for truly excellent meals. You will find more than meat here! They also have a small wine section, and a large collection of BBQ sauces, rubs, salts, and that sort of thing. Just inside the front door is a to-go food section with premade goodies like bacon mac and cheese. Last time I went was on a Saturday and the parking lot was pretty full, but I was able to get what I needed and check out pretty quickly. The staff at each counter were friendly and efficient. This place was near our hotel, so I decided to check them out. I asked for a sample of the pepperoni and the Jerky. Neither impressed me, but since I didn't want to snack and run I bought pepperoni stick. It was OK, but nothing special. The jerky wasn't jerky, it was candy. It was so full of brown sugar I almost went into sugar shock. For me, jerky is smokey, beefy and salty, save the sugar for your million-dollar bacon. I've been buying prime rib for Christmas for the past three years, always prioritizing quality. One year, I decided to purchase from a big-box store to 'save money'--and the difference was glaring. The quality of the meat, the flavor, and even the overall experience, including customer service, didn't compare. I won't be purchasing my holiday meats from any ever else. My go to butcher. Since they moved to the bigger building they've put together an incredible collection of options. Lots of unique cuts, plenty of ribeye options, the Dino ribs and flanken ribs always have incredible marbling. Have not tried the pork but it looks amazing. Great jerkey and the best stuffed potatoes. Wife loves the split pea soup. Some of the items are not cheap, so I try not to look at my receipts, but always worth every penny. I've also ordered a few cows from here, and the ground beef makes the best burgers I've ever had (my mom and wife agree. They don't order burgers at restaurants anymore cause mine are better. And it's not my cooking, it's the meat). The pot roast and if they make the jerkey are also great. I'm not a huge fan of grass fed tbones or ribeyes, but they are still good. Getting ready to use the round steaks to make jerkey on my own and expect it will be great. At the start of Covid I gave them a 1 star review due to an online order of a porterhouse that I'd call a NY. The owner disagreed with me and explained the cut in a polite way. You can judge by my photo. I disagreed but I laughed and moved on! So I'd suggest going in instead of an online order, but that's true for any grocery shopping. And if you don't go inside, you are truly missing out at their spectacular display. No matter, they have definitely earned back their 5 star status. Between the meating place and snake river farms, I don't bother going to el gaucho, ringside or any other fancy portland steak houses. The meat is just better here! And do yourself a favor. Grab lunch at the cafe with a pint before picking up your meat here. It will make for a great afternoon read more

Recently I bought beef from a local farmer and the cuts were super inconsistent and uneven, rib-eyes too thin, ground beef with chunks of tendon visible. I will definitely go back for choice cuts of meat and friendly staff! Although the meat is by no means cheap, the cuts look very fresh and the staff are really willing to go out of their way to help out. We called in ahead to ask if they had what we needed (pork fat), and although they did not have the exact item, they went out of their way to obtain it by cutting it off other portions of available meats. We had already contacted numerous other places, and none of them had this item, either, but this location was the only place that provided additional support and were extra-helpful. Additionally, they did advise us as well that because the request for this item is relatively rare, they recommend that we call ahead in the future to put in a request so that they can place an order. When we went in to get our order, it was very quick and efficient, and we were checked out within 7 min of entering the store. Their meat selection also looked great, and very fresh.
