As a single business traveler I often find it difficult if not a little intimidating to go to…read morerestaurants alone resulting in many nights of room service and two minute noodles. But after visiting Amor Mexico on a particularly lonely night, I am very happy to report that the warm and welcoming staff (not to mention the yummy food and cosy atmosphere) prompted a return visit a week later. And although the staff were different, the way they made me feel genuinely welcome and better still, appreciated for my choice to dine with them, was exactly the same as the first time. The restaurant was quite busy the first night and apart from the volume of the two large tables celebrating birthdays (they weren't that loud - I'm just a grumpy old man!) the service was equally as wonderful as that of the second occasion when there were only 4 or 5 tables of two dining. I ordered different drinks and meals each time and everything was delicious and reasonably generous in size adding good value for money to the list of positives of this place. If you or you and your friends/family are ever in Forest Hill - or within 20kms of Forest Hill - and feel like some yummy Mexican and great hospitality, drop in to Amor Mexico. PS. I talked with the owner on my second visit and was informed it has been a Mexican restaurant for 30 years and hasn't changed hands on the last 15 - which I guess is testimony to my very positive review.

You have to follow their Facebook page to get an idea of when they might do that, but it's definitely worth the anticipation. Trying out their newly built wood fire oven, the Al Carbon truck was serving up wood fired, slow roasted to perfection lamb tacos. Yes those same kind of tacos made famous by the previous incarnate La Lupita. Awesome freshly made corn tortillas and simple additions like purple cabbage and pickles. Respadas. It's a finely shaved Mexican snow cone. I've never tried anything like it. Chilli lime salt with agave syrup, Watermelon and Rose and Sweetened condensed milk. Very refreshing on a Summer's eve. Attila tells me this time around they are going Turkish. That's his real cooking passion. Slow roasted lamb, house made bread and tapas style sides, designed to be eaten by hand around a table with good friends. Something great is coming to the inner west. Watch this space.

Where should we start ...... - Service was painfully painfully slow overall, there was an extreme lack of staff for the number of customers. The staff clearly aren't having fun at all. They are run off their feet. - The food service was inaccurate, and the waitresses were quite argumentative. They messed up a few meals, and seemingly blamed us. - We brought a birthday cake made by my wife. During our meal we were shocked to see it being delivered, all candles blazing, to another table. My wife had to rush over, and chase the waitress to prevent her work being delivered to that table. The waitress was quite shocked, but did not apologise. - The staff offered drinks once, and once only. To get another drink, you had to ask, and then it was very slow. In one case we were charged for a beer that never arrived. - We were never offered coffee with the (finally correct) cake. - I had to ask for cutlery twice, and then finally gave up, and had to ask for it at the bar. - The staff never said thank-you when we left. - A 10 year old in our group said "Perhaps we should go somewhere else next time". Yes, yes would should. - On a positive note, the food that did arrive was good. With more staff, and more attentive staff, the experience could be quite good. And if they continued to offer drinks throughout the meal, we probably would have spent 50% more. And I hear that this place can be quite good during the week, but I'm giving it a wide berth. Nothing went wrong. It was a beuitiful place for pre Drinks before a night out. It was even good enough that I would consider it for a birthday. I loved dipping my quesadillas into the sour cream and my margarita felt full on and helped me relax. 5 stars for Pacos Tacos and they deserved it, thank you for starting my night out so well. The meals were incredibly quick to come out of the kitchen but this is not a suprise considering that most of the dishes didn't require on the spot cooking but rather a simple 'stack and go' line in the kitchen. Which is useful If you are on the run and need a quick bite. As for the atmosphere, I felt like I was sitting in a children's playground. The colours just did not work for me, and although bright colours open up the space, the use of yellow and pink just made the restaurant feel childish. Light and open floor plan makes it a pleasant place to eat, music adds to the atmosphere and the service has been very good. My kids aren't massive fans of Mexican, but they recommend the chipotle chips for anyone not feeling too adventurous. Overall, a great dining experience with consistently high levels of service and cleanliness. I highly recommend Fonda Mexican.
