Okay - so I've thought long and hard about what to say with this…read more This is a psychiatric hospital. It is meant for crisis stabilization not extended care. A large part of that is the unfortunate need to remove some people nights from people who are ill to keep them safe. I understand the processes, while dehumanizing, are meant for emergency care. What is not necessary in the dehumanizing process is ankle monitors. Not the type that have any useful information such as triggers, allergies, possible warning signs. These have to be beeped by the staff every 15 minutes. Day or night. 24 hours a day. The staff member needs to be at least 36 inches within the monitor. So let's talk about trauma informed care. First off, the range meant seeing a lot of iPads flashing under tables. A disproportionate amount of people with mental illness are assault survivors. Think about the optics there. Now go further - the rooms are approximately 10 by 10 with two people on opposite sides of the room, one beside the door and one on the opposite wall. This meant that a staff member had to come in 32 times a night INTO the bedroom. What's worse, because the ankle monitors are cheap, having clothing over them can stop them from scanning. The lights in the common areas are in full, the door never closes fully, and now there is a person who is standing at the foot of the bed doing a figure eight with an IPad over your ankles - and memorably once pulling away my blanket. Now add to this that when you ask for a same gender staff member to do room checks, you are informed that "Well, they have to get that close to make sure you are breathing." And " All our staff are professionals - we can't guarantee that we will have the staff." I want to make this clear - the actual workers who were being forced to do this by policy aren't the issue. They are trying so hard to be the best that they can (most of the time). The administration of the hospital is profit hungry and have no care of who they are serving until they realize that they are not the only ones with degrees. The director of nursing did not seem to be in communication with her staff, having one of her NPs walk out of a treatment meeting after the third time of stating she didn't know about any situation and wasn't given time to fix it. The grievance coordinator informed me that "all her staff are professionals" which made me feel very confident in the fact that she will do any sort of investigation. The NP decided that she was going to force me to sign a form one way or another. What's she didn't realize is that I worked in mental health... as a patients rights advocate. This has made me worse. I can honestly say that my sheer strength of will is the only reason I survived the reactivation of trauma that they inflicted. For the saving of 30,000 a year.
