A combination of agreeable staff and out-of-the-way location make this the ideal place to get gradually sozzled on wine and bask in the warm wooden coziness and brick-walled splendour of a restaurant with enormous amounts of quiet humility. Still, I'd rather shoot a sprout off my dog's head with a flamethrower than try the goat's cheese again.

About 12 tapas dishes into total plus the paella. Set menu was £16.50. If you don't want paella, its about £2 cheaper. The only problem with tapas is that there are so many dishes, you always run out of space quickly. You have to quickly eat dishes so you can make room for others. The food came very quickly. Good job as we were all hungry. The paella came about 40 minutes after we ordered - a good sign that it was cooked from scratch. Overall a very good evening. It was very busy and a group were actually sitting on the tables situated in the sort of "lobby" area at the bottom of the stairs near entrance (and near the entrance to toilets). I assume they were given the option if they wanted to sit there. I have heard El Rincon is very popular and you always have to book a table. There is quite a bit of football memorabilia on the walls and, as Emma-Louise H has also mentioned, I have heard that Manchester United have visited in the past. El Rincon is actually not situated on Deansgate as it has been mentioned on some places. Its actually on a small dark street parallel to Deansgate - which you could argue looks a bit dodgy especially when it was all dark and wet last night - typical Manchester rainy weather!! El Rincon is not the easiest place to find and I would imagine doesnt get much passing custom.

Had it not been for the trusty map app we'd probably have struggled to find it, (it's on the corner of Longworth Street, which is off St Johns Street, which is off Deansgate...). Head through the doors and you descend stairs that resemble a London Tube station's with a central hand rail. At the bottom, a small replica of Picasso's 'Guernica' painting is high above you, with a traditional-looking tiled restaurant sign on the back wall. Turn a corner and you're met with a cavernous space, double height ceilings and a huge bar (where you can sit and eat at as well). I'm certainly glad I booked as it was very busy and throughout our meal there was a constant stream of customers (some 'winged it' and were seated where they could find space, one small group ended up sitting in the entrance area!). We could tell it was a popular place so were looking forward to getting stuck in. As a group of seven we didn't need to trawl through the menu as we had a choice of two set ones (opting for the slightly more expensive, but we got two extra tapas dishes plus a paella; and it was only £2 per person extra). Jug of sangria poured, the first of fifteen dishes started to arrive (I'm not going to list them all so don't worry), but lots of tapas faves were included, as well as some I hadn't heard of before. A bargain lunch, some would say! The service could be a bit quicker in regards to showing people to tables and the manner could be a bit less brusque. Also I'd prefer it if I'd been told about the offers - had we not seen a poster outside, we'd have gone for the 2-4-1 offer I'd had ready anyway - every other La Tasca I've been to has always said what offers they have available. We started off with bread and olives. The olives were proper Spanish olives (not that tinned rubbish that some places give you) and the bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar was plentiful. The chicken croquettes left something to be desired. The fried white fish was crispy, light, and not greasy at all. The meatballs were plentiful and tasty. The vegetarian paella was the best I have ever had! The cheesy aubergines in red sauce was delicious. There were many vegetarian options. The service was great and friendly, our waitress was more than helpful. The food came out reasonably quick as well. Both the serving plates and the food was hot (very important). The staff tips are not shared - the waitress did share hers with the cook staff, which I thought was fair. All in all a great experience! There is also a dance-floor in the centre of a good size, which I'm sure was packed later in the evening. I would highly recommend the Chorizo, Grilled Salmon and Duck, but of course with this you need a vegetable dish, which there are many fantastic ones to choose from. There are a couple of choices of house wine by the glass and I particularly like the red house Acantus Tinto a Tempranillo Cab Sav, which is really good value either by the glass or bottle. Now I remember this place when it was The Bulls head and have many a good/boozy night in the upstairs room watching bands/djs over the years....I am happy to see they have kept that part of the venue as a live entertainment space and regularly have salsa/cuban bands playing on weekends. The downstairs of the venue has not changed too much either in fairness but now has a cuban theme with flags and a bit of paint job. Its pretty simple on design but it works. For the event hosting by Dine Birmingham we were given a background into the production of rum and its origins while tasting five different rums. There was also a live band playing in the downstairs area of the venue which was a nice touch. To soak up some of the rum we were give half time snacks of patatas bravas and a bean stew, both were really tasty and have probably helped me not feel terrible today! Great event, great venue and lovely to meet lots of new people. Ill be back.
