She is so spunky, has a lot of energy, and I love how she is so animated when she directs. Not too bad that I'm partial to strings, Berstein and more contemporary pieces, but also in the last concert, they had a "mystery song" on the program. In about 3 notes, I recognized it as Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" which brings me to tears anyway, but to see a guest violinist and a full orchestra playing such a great piece was fantastic, and the subtle rainbow lights (part of the song, if you don't know) just really hammered it home for me. I'm also an LGBTQ ally so love anything with rainbows, but congrats to the organizers, musicians, director, guests and sponsors for bringing youth and contemporary stuff into the fold. I know people at work who aren't classical music enthusiasts but they started coming, so yay! Keep music and the arts alive in this community. Thank you for helping me have a big girl cry.

My mother and I were there last night for the blacklight starry night painting class and it was a…read moretotal bust for almost $100. The instructor actually told us she had never painted that before, and she completely botched it. Not to mention, had her friend in the class as well (which is normally not an issue) but was totally distracted which in turn was messing everyone else up. A few people around us expressed their frustrations as well, to which she laughed off or would continually repeat "I hear everything in this room". Keeping in mind that this is a black light painting, we almost didnt even get to see what it looked like under the blacklight until my mother asked the instructor if we could a short while after the sessions was over and almost half the class had already left. Would not come back here even if I was paid to, teach your instructors to do their job better. Would give 0 stars if I could.

After going to the 2012 Greater Olympia Dixieland Jazz Festival at Saint Martin's University and…read moreall I can say is WOW! This 4-day festival was so much more than I was expecting! I came in thinking I would sit and listen to jazz bands. How wrong I was! The first thing I noticed was the sea of RVs. A large section of the parking area was devoted to them. I walked past the RVs to pay for my ticket at the Marcus Pavilion. I thought the Friday-only price of $40 was a bit steep. Then I saw all of the activities available. There were so many dancers! I had a chance to talk to quite a few of them during the day. It turned out many had driven across several states to attend. I did my best to remember my moves from 10 years a go. I was very relieved to learn lessons were included in the ticket price. I had a great time and will be back for 2013! The 2013 Greater Olympia Dixieland Jazz Festival will be on June 27, 28, 29 and 30.

In the past few months I watched a friend lead a fun cast in the play "The Liar" and got to see a rare treat, Jonathan Larson's "tick, tick, boom!" which plays with some of the same themes of the tough choices artists had to make which he would also include in his show "Rent". The theater sells limited snacks and because it's so small, it's a very intimate setting. Before the show started, they mentioned that the venue is available for anyone who wants to do a small show, play, concert, or stand up so this place seems like a valuable asset for the arts community of Olympia.
