    This is 70s heaven. The steaks are the best in Burnham and good value. This place will not be around mutch longer so try it now.

This has got to be one of the oldest pubs in South Wales, it's medieval and dates from 1380. This is one of those places that reminds you how small we used to be - I'm only 5ft 7 and I stoop through the worn wooden doors. I havn't eaten here, but there is also a well respected restaurant upstairs offering a good selection of seafood dishes. Dishes include: Brixham Crab Cake with baby leaves and lemon butter sauce (£5.25); Plaice Goujons with paprika and a sweet red pepper tartar sauce (£4.95); Roasted Fillet of Hake with a chorizo and roasted red pepper risotto ith tomato, garlic and orange sauce for £13.95 For the vegetarians on the day I visited there was: Tomato Fondue, Wild Mushroom and Aubergine Bake, finished with garlic crumb and poached egg (£4.95) and Rosemary and Truffle Arancini Risotto with a tomato, red onion and spring onion salsa ( £4.95). The restaurant opening times are Monday to Saturday from 7pm to 9.30pm. They also offer bar meals between 12 and 2 pm Mondays to Saturdays and evening meals Monday to Friday from 6 to 8 pm.

As you arrive here you drive up to a car park and then walk through the walled gardens following the signs to the cafe, as you walk through the gardens you can see an abundance of wonderful plants and vegetables, its such fun trying to identify what is what, on this particular day we didn't linger too long cause it was raining. The ethos is that they make their food using ingredients that they grow themselves in the garden, for all other ingrediants, meat, dairy etc they use good local suppliers. We had booked a table which was a good job because it looked pretty full, I was pleased to see that they had the best highchairs you can get (the cheap ikea white ones), my little girl has one of these at home so I'm always pleased when a place has them (most paces do cause they are so brilliant). The menu was very interesting and had lots of very unusual things such as sweetbreads, lacto-fermented eggs and massicated strawberry salad, we of course went for the more unusual things and I must say we weren't disappointed, all of the food was amazing, I had massicated strawberry salad to start which was sharp and tangy and delicious, then I had confit duck leg as the main course which was also delicious but a little on the dry side and a sticy toffe apple pudding for desert which was moist and very tasty. Unusually we didnt go for wine but instead we went for cider, it was Crossmans cider which they sell at Crossmans farm in Hewish, we love this cider and pop into the farm to buy it whenever we are heading down south so we were really excited to see it for sale in a restaurant. Our designated driver had hop cordial which was actually really quite horrible tasting but is probably an acquired taste, I assume that they make it there. After the meal the rain had stopped and we really got to appreciate the beautiful gardens by having a lovely walk around. In a nutshell The Ethicurean is not the cheapest lunch you will get with starters at about £8 and main courses at between £17 and £22 but the quality, care, thought and effort that has obviously gone into every dish makes it worth it.

    Fabulous 17 the century local inn. Friendly staff fabulous food , never been disappointed. Lovely…read morebuilding , original beams. Large conservatory with hanging vine from the ceiling. Plenty of seating areas to eat or just a drink. Great atmosphere in the summer or winter. A lovely open fire in the main bar when it's chilly outside. Have visited this inn many times a real favourite with all the family.

My parents went back to their original home there upon retirement and I still visit my mother there when possible. Tonight we must go the Rock at Georgeham, she announced during a recent visit, so go we did. I had a vague memory of having gone there many years ago, but vague it remained. The pan roasted duck breast was sensational, although I did not take so well to the 'gooseberry tarte tatin' which was 'tarte by name and tart by nature'. I think duck really deserves something a bit sweeter, but if anything it was my fault because I chose it. La contessa and la dowager contessa were delighted with their choices. Reasonable prices, excellent food, great ambiance and also friendly staff who definitely seemed just that bit more professional than average. Do take a look at the excellent website and if you are in that neck of the woods, you will not regret visiting.
