A great place to eat in Reading. I highly recommend it. There are many choices for having a meal in Reading near the Caversham Bridge. Several on both sides of the bridge. I have tried many of them when I was visiting. I tried this particular one the first time and came back 3 times in a week. It is located at the southwest corner of A4155 and Randolph Road. The only parking seems to be street parking but it is easily walkable for the area. It is a very nice pub-like atmosphere with Tables in front, inside, and out back of the building in a courtyard. The seating is a variety of options from 4-seat arrangements and bench seating to large outdoor picnic styles under a tent. The inside is wood floors with a bar. The staff was wonderful and helpful. The food and drink came out quickly. They have a large menu with a lot of variety. I tried the Sunday roast dinner, the burger, and something like Peking Duck. Every meal I got was delicious. I tried their cider and it was also excellent. Overall, it was excellent every time that I went there. I highly recommend this to anyone in the area hungry for a good meal or looking for a nice place to share a drink. read more

We have been at Moderation for lunch only, so the review might not reflect the pub in full. One of my colleagues heard good reviews, so we decided to give it a try. At first, things were going great - we were greeted, given menus, drinks arrived promptly. However, hiccups followed - our food was delayed A LOT. We spent over an hour at the venue, and some of my colleagues had to head back to meetings without having food and had to ask their order to be packed as a take-away. While I am aware things like that happen, I think it could have been handled better. Now, back to food. The lunch-time menu offered quite a good value for money - £10 pounds for two dishes. The starters were quite nice, but the main dish is a bit bland, nothing outstanding- and those of us who opted for the lunch menu agreed on that. Don't get me wrong, it was still good- and if it wasn't for an hour wait I would have given it solid 4 stars. read more

This is a great place. Id like to keep coming back so I can up my rating to a 5. Had the fish and chips for dinner one night before the Sunday quiz. Chips were fresh and thick while the fish was nicely breaded and light. Not greasy or unappealing in the slightest. Try a pint Doom Bar and have a great night read more

Awful customer service. Avoid to all cost if you're looking for the well known kindness of the people of Thailand. I ordered explicitly "King Prawns Thai Green Curry" as a main, but chicken Thai green curry was brought instead. The waiter instead of being apologetic for his obvious mistake, he insisted that I ordered chicken instead of king prawns, although it was confirmed by my friends on the table that I was right since ordered king prawns. After ignoring me, he told me that he will bring some prawns aside for an extra charge, but of course I didn't accept it since I emphasised that I ordered king prawns not chicken. He continued being extremely rude, and insisting that I did order chicken. I spoke to the manager who didn't care about this situation, even he saw everything from the bar and didn't do anything at all. At the end, I cancelled my order, because I didn't feel comfortable ordering in a place where I've been treated so bad as they did. When the bill arrived, another kind waitress at least aplogised on behalf of the other guy who took my order completely wrong, and gave us £15 off the bill, although I was still hungry and with the bad taste of being treated like this. In terms of food quality-wise, being totally transparent, the starter was OK, but thw special Pad Thai ordered by my wife was lack of prawns, flavour and too much eggs in it. In general, very disappointing experience here and I won't definitely come back again to this restaurant. read more

Belonging to a group of three Reading public houses, we principally came to the The Moderation to eat on a Saturday night. We called ahead and a reserved table was there for us on arrival. The menu is European and Asian but in a broad sense with popular dishes from Fish n Chips through to Balinese Lamb Curry they were all lovely though personally I thought the chips served with Peri-peri Chicken not up to scratch. One thing to say is the size of the Appetisers; HUGE and great value! If I'd known, I genuinely would have just stuck with a main or for a lighter meal just stick with an Appetiser. Food service was odd though: they could do with explaining on the menu's to order from the bar. When it came to paying, I went up but they said they'd bring the bill over which they did but doesn't that suggest they bring a card machine to the table? No, in the end I went up to pay. Oh, talking of drinks, again there is a brilliant selection: For Wine, you could even select a Berkshire wine and beers, an excellent selection of draughts and ales. read more

Came here twice while on a business trip. The service is efficient and food and drinks arrive quickly. I enjoyed the fish and chips, with the homemade tartar sauce being the standout. I came back and got the melting goats cheese starter and the mod burger. Even though the place was very busy, everything came out piping hot and so delicious. Best burger I've had in a long time, great flavor and cooked just right. And the goats cheese starter was incredible. I wish I'd discovered it earlier in my trip! The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because the chips are not memorable. I'd come back in a heartbeat! read more

Gorgeous food, I love Thai and am really picky when it comes to forking out for restaurants but it was delicious. Had half duck and a platter type rice dish, very fresh and delicious. read more

The Moderation is a great pub for food or a few beers. I would agree that they need to improve their chips. But apart from that good steaks and a good Thai curry. The owners and bar staff are really good and it is probably the best pub in Reading. read more

Have to agree with previous reviewer. The Moderation is a totally different pub to the old pre-refurbished version. Good menu, nice range of beer and lots of pleasant seating. A great pub for a chilled night out. The owners also own The Lyndhurst and The Warwick Arms, all in Reading. read more
