Not exactly the type of pub that I feel is relaxed enough for me to just duck into for a quiet pint…read moreand certainly not somewhere to go with mates for more than a few, The James Munro is a modern, elegant kind of place that is better for a casual date or business lunch as the main thing here is the food. The interior really is classy, being a modern polished version of the traditional British public house as you expect from todays gastropubs. Big comfy, wooden framed booths line the side near the bar while the floor is taken up with dining tables. This is a good place to come for lunch especially with the 2 course special, as you get the benefit of good food without the fine dining faffing. The food is good so it seems a pity that The James Munro is situated in such a quiet part of town for an evening dining experience.

Classy is the word I'd use to describe The James Monro every time, perhaps too classy for a student…read moretype such as myself. The surroundings are plush and this is the archetypal gastropub. The staff are excellent and you feel relaxed and at home inside even though the decor can make a scruffy student feel out of place slightly. The drinks are expensive but you realise this from the moment you enter and it can come as no shock at all that there is no change from a fiver for two pints. The food is The James Monros real shining light, the menu would hold up in many gourmet restaurants and the service is exceptional I took my girlfriend here early on in our relationship trying to impress and was shocked to find that even with a two for one offer on steaks the cost was still over twenty five pounds, not too say it wasnt worth the price as the food was unbelieveable, All in all a proper pub which transitions beautifully into gourmet restaurant and doesnt let you down in either field even if it is a bit out of the student price range. So if youve got a bit of spare cash and you feel like an upmarket pint then put on a nice jumper and head to The James Monro

I guess this little story sums up the Cross House's status as a pub for special occasions for me, but never considered as a viable option for my local. The interior is interestingly decorated and the variety of different seating available is excellent, offering many comfortable areas to converse over a few pints. The food served there is nothing special - standard pub fare and priced accordingly - but whenever I have visited the atmosphere has always been warm and inviting, perfect for a birthday or other special occasion. That's the thing though; although it's a very pleasant pub, it just doesn't have the 'feel' of a local. Maybe it's something to do with the distinct lack of odd, drunken regulars (they always seem a respectable lot in there) which I see as a staple of establishments to be considered as my 'local' (is this normal for someone my age? Let's not go there). They also have a weekly quiz night, although it is probably one of the more difficult ones in Formby (only beaten by the Bay Horse) and a lovely outdoor area, perfect for a not-so-warm summer's night with a few bottles of cider.

It's a nice pub too, smokefree before it became the law (strange to think there was ever a time when you might come home from a pub stinking of tobacco) and with a gastopub-leaning menu before gastropub really existed (a pub with asparagus on the menu, even if it was a Formby specialty, was unheard of) It has the sort of unpracticed sort of charm, with mismatched furniture and low beams, that only an authentic pub really does, the sort of authentic pub-charm that various branches of Wetherspoons and Slug & Lettuce try to emulate. They have old speckled hen on tap occasional live music and the pub quiz is easily the best to be found in Formby. It's a shame that we hardly seem to go anymore, I'll have to start reliving my eighteenth birthday.

Situated at the geographical midpoint between the Philharmonic Hall and the Everyman playhouse it is a very easy walk to either. If however you are coming into the city by public transport you will need somewhat more fortitude and physical capacity to ascend from the city centre stations to hope street. I would say the Side door is definitely for couples and smaller family groups. The food is good value in terms of the high quality for the price but is not by any stretch priced for those on a tight budget. Whilst you won't find Scouse on the menu, the best bit is the Scouser twist to food service. The Side Door has universally friendly staff , engaging you in that almost unique Liverpool way from the moment the take your coat to the point at which you pay your bill. To my way of thinking the Side door is a great all round dining experience and I know that when you experience it you will want to return for the encore.

This is a small bistro which really punches above its weight and has always delivered a top quality dining experience. The Side Door is basically a great place for a pre theatre eat and let me tell you these two things go hand in hand. The grilled rump steak here is sensational and melts in mouth and the chefs always cook it to absolute perfection. The prices are okay but can be a little high, however let me say that the cost reflects the value and quality of the product. There is a really relaxed and refined ambience about this place meaning it is always a pleasant place to eat, especially before a great night of showmanship.
