First off Ill start by saying our time with Mount Vernon was great, and we chose the apartment we did because they were extremely courteous, and seemed to actually take tenant's best interests in mind. They kept the building clean, maintained, and were nothing but kind and pleasant to deal with. That being said, we re-signed our lease less than a month ago, only for them to sell our building, and others they own in the area, without warning to the most notorious slumlord in Boston, with 0 notice until the DAY we swapped management companies. While I understand properties get sold - Ive had other apartments sold while I lived in them - to sell off to the known scummiest company in Boston the month after tenants are required to re-sign and give 0 heads up is disrespectful, and honestly the most frustrated Ive ever been with property management in Boston. Had I known the building was up for sale I would not have re-signed, and now I am stuck another full year with a landlord I have actively avoided my entire time in Boston. Housing isn't a luxury, its a necessity, and to sell off your tenants unknowingly to a slumlord speaks volumes to how you actually view the people who pay your bills. 2 stars because up until this they were great, but this soured my entire experience, and I hope others dont have to deal with their deceitfulness. read more

My partner and I have worked with the Mount Vernon Company for two years (1298 Comm). We had an incredible experience with our property manager and all the workers in our building- big shout out to Stacey! If we needed something fixed or looked out, we heard immediately from the team. The two maintenance workers and cleaner at our building were incredibly nice, hard working and overall made living there very nice! Stacey provided some fun guessing games and always had treats for the residents during holidays. Stacey is super responsive and easily accessible via email. Starting in Boston with another company, MV blew them out of the park. Again, highly rate the maintenance and cleaning crew; made living there that much better. The only negative was the process of working with other relators during our move out process (this was not MV company employees- this was another relator company) due to their lack of communication all together- otherwise, MV company had a great process for moving out. I lived at one of the properties on Commonwealth Ave. DO NOT lease one of these apartments! There is a roach infestation, the water is regularly shut off for repairs (sometimes several days in one week), the boiler broke last winter and residents were left without heat, and they are having to repeat their city building inspection (I'm pretty sure it's because they failed the previous time). read more

Stacey is super responsive and easily reachable by email. Instead of going through a realtor in Boston, we opted to lease directly with Mt Vernon during the pandemic. *Updated review for 40 Parker Hill* If you enjoy roaches crawling between your toes while you shower, then this is the place for you! They still haven't fixed the cockroach problem and it has been over 4 months now. They also never fix their washers so usually there is only one working washer for like 16 units. Unfortunately I can't have family or friends visit bc it's honestly so embarrassing. Talked to the unit next to mine and she has our roach problem plus mice. The pest control team said they can only do so much if the other units leave food out all day. I understand Mount Vernon and their pest control team can't control other people's filth but they could definitely afford more aggressive pest control treatment with the rent prices they charge. All in all, we initially really liked this apartment because of the location (my husband is a physician and it is really close to the hospitals). My advice to you- pay the broker fee and go into a building with less units/college students if you value your health and sanity. read more

Stacey is extremely responsive with any questions about our building, apartment and parking - and the maintenance staff is incredibly kind and fast, they literally have fixed anything we need in under 24 hours. I've never felt unsafe or like my apartment is in bad condition because they constantly upkeep the units. I lived at 1848 Comm. Ave for a bit over a year and a half and have really loved my experience. When I moved in, I was really surprised to see some of the reviews here, since I had nothing but an easy move and a very simple acclimation to Boston living. I've had a few hiccups with the apartment over time, which is to be expected with such an old building, but maintenance has always been extremely responsive and friendly to work with. They've also taken the time to replace certain things in the apartment while they've done other work. Most recently, I had a brand new sink and cabinet fitted (without me requesting one) when a pipe above my bathroom started leaking. The rent has always been reasonable, and only increased $25 when I renewed. It was a great apartment, and I'll be sad to leave it! That being said, for various reasons, I needed to move before the end of my lease in Sept. I signed my new lease, had a lease takeover worked out, and then the new tenant fell through. Ken, the property manager, managed to work things out so that I can indeed move into my new place without worry. He's been a fantastic manager the entire time - responsive, helpful, and friendly. I've lived in many other apartments for more rent and half the service. I don't have anything bad to say about my experience here! read more

We lived at a Mount Vernon property for three years. We LOVED the place, -- the building was well maintained, the price was affordable (for Cambridge, MA!), the unit itself was comfortable/beautiful. Mount Vernon's customer service was a huge selling point -- they checked all the basics (easy to pay rent online, didn't raise rent unreasonably year-to-year), but they also went above and beyond. Anytime we needed help (the shower curtain rod fell and we couldn't get it back up, the microwave light's bulb was out, the fridge drawer was a little broken, etc.), we only had to email them and they would respond immediately, swing by the day-of, and fix it. Another benefit: They were able to come while we were at work, meaning we didn't need to rearrange our schedules around these little jobs. We were completely spoiled by them. Honestly, I cannot speak highly enough of Mount Vernon and their team. (I am completely baffled by the poor reviews -- I do not think they reflect MV's current team/service.) read more

I'll start with the worst of it: MVC is refusing to apply our last month's rent to our last month of living, and is insisting that three tenants who are not re-signing the lease front the money for the incoming people who are still being found, after agreeing to allow someone the time to find replacement tenants. They encouraged us to work it out internally, and have incoming tenants (strangers!) refund us the money. We have all completed our lease term in full. After some research, I believe this is illegal. The management response time is dismal - expect to send reminders multiple times to receive any response. For the units in the 60s-70s Brighton Ave, laundry is opened by key. After a year of complaining that the laundry door knob was broken, it still remains. I have asked anyone I run into in the laundry room and they also shared that it takes 5-10 minutes to open the door. Maintenance left me instructions on how to "wiggle my key" the right way to open it. That says a broken door. Crazy lease "change" fees even if people finish their leases. Poor to no communication about policies, only communicate over email, and received completely incorrect information from one manager, Jarrod. I fought it and had fees waived. They seem to change policies at whim. They operate as an all powerful company taking advantage of those who may be too scared to speak up or lack the confidence to question their rights as tenants. Completely irresponsible, incompetent. I will never again rent from this company and advise anyone look elsewhere. read more

Doesn't even deserve one star. I live in one of Mount Vernon's brand new buildings in their Green District, just finished this year. After less than half a year, the place is a mess. They don't respond to maintenance requests-the door to my building has been jammed open for months now, the building is a mess, the tenants are messy, loud, and creating fire hazards left and right. People openly smoke in the building, leave trash all over the place, and I am routinely without hot water, as are several other tenants in the building. For the amount of money I pay for a tiny apartment in Allston, I (and I think everyone in the building) expect more than this. Today's notable incident was coming home after a long shift to a pile of purple vomit all over our elevator's floor. Maintenance was called, and we were informed that the cleaners would be called to clean up. Nine hours later, I checked in with security, and the guard on duty informed me that he had made the effort to call, as had several other tenants. I made a call to maintenance myself, and the woman on the phone assured me that "she could only let maintenance know". What a joke. TWELVE HOURS LATER, the cleaning crew finally arrived and we can use the elevator without a biohazard decorating the walls. If I weren't locked into a year's lease, I'd be out of this place tomorrow. EDIT: 5/10/14 Due to some changes in my job schedule and studies, I decided to renew my lease-my other option was to become homeless for the summer. I will say that since writing my original review, things have improved a little bit. The smoking seems to have been reduced, repair and maintenance calls are responded to within a VERY reasonable time, and the whole place is a LOT cleaner. One of Mount Vernon's staff reached out to me to personally acknowledge my feedback and reassured me that steps are being taken to correct the issues I complained about, which would have reassured me if not for the tone of "don't worry little girl, it's NORMAL to hear noise in an apartment". I've been living in shared buildings for almost a decade and NEVER had an issue with tenants stomping on their floors loud enough to hear at three in the morning. Property manager (Ken) is the busiest guy on planet Earth, its impossible to get a hold of this guy! He is so busy that he treats tenants like we are living in an asylum. Send him an email and just keep your fingers crossed that he replies back in 2-3 business (your pretty much screwed on weekends) days. He's very courteous to give us his "DIRECT" line which is linked to a voice mail that he would never check no matter what! (btw his direct line NEVER gets answered) The receptionist is just immensely talented in handling angry clients and is probably a pathological liar. receptionist convinces you that everything is going be "alright!" but does nothing about it! I live in a building owned by this company. Out of about a dozen maintenance calls, I have received 1 call back and zero maintenance (the one call back resulted in nothing). The people who answer their phones are great, but that is the only good thing I can say. The conditions in the building (230 Walnut Street, Newton) are sub-standard compared to the other dumps I have lived in, but its not the type of stuff that you would notice until a week after moving in (loud pipes, bad plumbing, crappy locks, uncontrollable heat). We have had ongoing issues with out apartment regarding cock roaches, the trash room (which is right next door to our apt), mildew and mold and their own employees using the parking space they make me pay for. We have had mildew in one of our cabinets for over a year and they are still "working on it". So we have a torn up cabinet and our pots/pans/ utensils all out of place everywhere in our kitchen for well over a week now. Also, the maintenance man accidentally told me about a pipe not working in our apartment that they needed to fix? And then the whole management team refused to say anything else about it. They also threaten late fees after 5 days of late rent but it is actually a tenant right on mass.gov that you cannot charge a late fee until after 30days of missed rent. I lived in a Mount Vernon Company building on Beacon Hill for almost two years and found them to be consistently responsive. From the day I saw the place at 9AM and was able to sign a lease by 2PM to making move-out arrangements, they were cooperative and helpful. The biggest surprise was when they moved a new fridge into my 4th floor walk-up when the old one was missing shelves - don't know how they got it up the stairs! Disagree with all negative comments I've read so far. Been dealing with them for half a year now and not once have I been disappointed. Ken (or any other rep that I've had to deal with) has always been responsive and very quick about resolving any issues I may have. * Needed to be added to intercom system, called company, within 24-hours I was responded to and all set up in system. * Kitchen window fell out of frame and need new parts, called company and left message, within 24 hours, got responded to and had maintenance crew come and fix the window and install new parts. The building itself, while old, is still maintained very well. I think its childish to complain about your neighbors, especially on Yelp, as well as blame it on the property group. Deal with them yourself. The sidewalks and steps during the winter months are shoveled and salted down to the point where all fear of slipping is gone. The trash pick-up is consistent and the laundry room is fully functional. While this is my first time dealing with them and its been less than a year, I feel a 3 out of 5 is well deserved. It was a fire yesterday 5:50am in the very next door building (yes during the snow storm) and while we had to evacuate our apartment after 5 mins due to the smoke, nobody from the management didn't even care to ask we are okey or alive! And since the fire the electricity seems to have some problem. The heating system, which just work sometimes and rest of the time its freezing in most parts of our units is noisy and make it hard to sleep. read more

If I could give less than one start I would. Living in one of their properties for the past year has been miserable. Throughout the winter my apartment leaked. Their solution was to give me buckets while I slowly moved furniture out of the room. They waited until it was actually raining in my apartment to do anything about it. Once the leaking stopped all the did was peal off the parts of the ceiling that had started to fall down and paint over the water stains that covered my walls. The water damage in my walls was so bad in one room that it actual leaked through a nail hole in the adjacent room. But that didn't matter to them, they just covered it. Meanwhile the walls were soaking wet and are likely molding as we speak. Also for over a month during the winter I couldn't use the laundry room because there was at least 6-inches of ice covering the stairs down to the laundry room. This ice was not managed or addressed until almost the end of the season. On another occasion I came home to find myself locked out of my building because they had changed the locks while I was at work without informing the tenants. The worst of it was that they had changed the locks because there was some sketchy things going on in the basement of my building. To top it all off they sold additional parking spots in our parking lot to a rental car service. So I now have to park on the opposite side of the lot from where I live. I over $100 extra a month to park there. Needless to say, I am not renewing my lease and will never rent fro the Mount Vernon Company again. read more

I have lived at their 'less glamorous' Brighton property rather than the Beacon Hill property. Six (6) times over the past seven (7) months we have had **no heat, no hot water, no cold water, and, once, no water at all!** The heat and water black outs lasted between several hours to a day or two. While the company did fix these problems, it is not reasonable for so many problems to occur in a such a short period of time (almost one per month!). It was hard to live in the apartment due to the consistent reoccurring problems - can't use toilet, shower, faucet; no water, no heat during Boston winter, etc. One repairman was courteous and responsive while a couple were very rude and unresponsive. We had a major storm at the end of August 2011, and the roof leaked. Water came through the light switches. I called the company and they put me on hold 4 times for so many minutes that I just called the fire department! This was an emergency situation and we had to be evacuated. The Mount Vernon Company had no response whatsoever for several hours. This is not responsible or reasonable of a landlord to do. ( When someone did get to there, he was rude and left us outside in the rain with no information about repair or when we could return to our apartments.) Very disorganized and uncaring. This was the beginning of my lease! Our last "no water at all for several peak day hours" event occurred this March 2012. They charge over $1,250 per month for a studio apartment so having no water, no heat, etc. so many times during the year is unacceptable, unless they charge less or compensate tenants for their inability to use their apartments normally. I won't even say anything about the noisy construction going on while people are still living in the apartments trying to enjoy a peaceful afternoon. It looks like the tenant at the Beacon Hill property lucked out! Not sure what is wrong with their Brighton maintenance though, so BEWARE! *****Advice to renters: STAY AWAY from this company. It looks like from the review posted above that they can be either a hit or a total miss. I regret leasing with them, and can't wait to leave so I can finally have a normal heat and hot water situation. Don't let that happen to you! read more

We have lived at a Mt. Vernon property for almost 3 years and have had an entirely positive experience. When we moved into our apartment, it was shiny and spotless, with new appliances and freshly painted walls. Throughout our time as tenants, they have slowly worked to improve the common areas, including installing new hallway carpets and painting all the front doors. The shared outdoor space is well-maintained and Mt. Vernon provides lawn chairs in the spring and summer. The trash is also taken care of quickly and neatly. Basically, everything that needs to happen happens. It is so clear that Mt. Vernon cares about the building, and cares about the tenants. Ken Vennard has been consistently helpful and responsive. We have had a very small number of issues (leaking sink, faulty radiator) which have been dealt with quickly and effectively. I am really surprised to see some negative reviews - we have taken it as a give-in that Ken and Mt. Vernon will just deal with it. Overall, I would definitely recommend Mt. Vernon. read more

I feel like I won the luck of the draw with this building. I live in the basement, and although there are some things that could be better (the pipes are loud, the carpet gets super messy and the stove is kind of funky), I honestly couldn't ask for a better staff. Ken is a God-sent, always responses to my emails within 24 hours, never minds that I have a million question and is constantly checking to make sure he's doing the most he can. The maintenance crew has always been so kind and helpful, it's honestly a joy to have them stop into my apartment. I cannot say enough good things about Mount Vernon. I have lived in one of their buildings for almost three years and am sad to go knowing that this service is one that is rare to find ! In our three years we've of course come across typical household issues (sink problem, window issue, etc.) but all were fixed immediately. We put in a call and it is almost instantaneous that someone from MV comes to resolve the issue. Not only do they fix it, they send a follow up to make sure everything is working properly and to make sure that we were happy with the service. The employees of Mount Vernon, from the property manager to the maintenance staff, are all respectful, kind, and happy to help - they are wonderful people who have been a pleasure to work with. In addition to the quality of customer service, Mount Vernon leaves their properties in extremely clean conditions. The walls were painted fresh and all of the rugs in the building were replaced a year after I moved in. The snow is always shoveled before anyone on the street and mulch is always spread at the first signs of Spring. I'll never forget when I was shoveling in a large snow storm, an employee was out on the streets with a snowplow and ended up plowing out our car which saved us hours! These small efforts go a long way and are always appreciated. Having rented in many different properties before, I have never come across a management company as service-oriented as Mount Vernon. They have made our time in our apartment so enjoyable and hassle-free and it has made all the difference. read more

14 Marion st Brookline ma Coolidge corner - Another unprofessional management company. The property manager takes absolutely no actions if you have a serious complaint. He thanks you for letting him know and that's it. The neighbors are so loud, with parties and huge dogs running around on hard wood floor near midnight every night of the week. The property manager does nothing about it. The trash is constantly overflowing, very messy parking lot. We've been without water about 4 times this summer due to construction, for 4-6 hours at a time. The parking spot I pay for has been occupied by other tenants, and Mt Vernon employees despite the sign stating private parking for paying tenants only and I've had to park in the street and have received parking tickets. The manager says sorry that's about it. It's been very uncomfortable living here since day one. Would not rent again from a company who doesn't value their residents. read more

My wife and I have been renting an apartment from Mt. Vernon in Back Bay for more than a year now. We have had a very positive experience with Mt. Vernon. The rent has been reasonable and they only increased it marginally (2.5%) when we renewed our lease. Our apartment is in an old building (to be expected in Back Bay) and Mt. Vernon has done a good job of maintaining the building, so we have not had too many issues. However, anytime we've had problems with the apartment (we have reported several issues, such as drain clogs, problematic radiators, leaking refrigerator, and fogged up window panes), they have proven to be responsive and fixed everything quickly and thoroughly. Both Sarah who has been our contact at Mt. Vernon Co. as well as the maintenance men who have come to our flat have been nothing but courteous and professional. The entrance and stairwell are consistently kept clean, the washer and dryer in the basement have always been in good working order, the garbage and recycling are taken out regularly, and building rules are enforced. For example, a tenant had started locking a bicycle to the stairway banister leading to the main building door, contrary to building rules, and Mt. Vernon delivered a notice to all tenants saying that they would cut the lock within 3 days if the offending person did not remove the bicycle. When living in a multi-tenant building, it's good to have a landlord who enforces such building rules. Mt. Vernon has also repainted the interior of the building a couple times since we moved in, re-carpeted the stairwells, and also upgraded the flooring in the foyer as well as the boiler in the basement. They seem to be quite diligent about maintenance and also seem to be gradually upgrading the building to keep pace with the neighborhood. It's not a luxury building, but given that our building doesn't have room for an elevator or doorman, it never will be a luxury building (which is reflected by our rent) and Mt. Vernon has done as good a job as can be expected. In short, we have had a great experience with Mt. Vernon and cannot recommend them more highly. read more

Any issue we have encountered, no matter how big or small, has been dealt with promptly and courteously. Even today, on a holiday when they couldn't guarantee anyone was going to be able to make it, someone was at our place within the hour and handled the issue immediately. My wife and I replied to a posting on Craigslist regarding a de-leaded 2 bed apartment that was also cat-friendly and came with two parking spots. After applying, credit checks, and being approved, Mt. Vernon stated that they have a strict no-pet policy. Turns out the current tenants posted the ad themselves with zero fact-checking done by the management company. Even though the current tenants HAD two cats in the unit, and the ad was misrepresented, we were unable to convince Mt Vernon to change their mind. It also turns out the unit was NOT de-leaded and did NOT come with parking spots. Beware this company and their properties. Do not trust anything they list online until you get the official documentation on their properties. Do not let them run your credit until all of your concerns have been answered. read more

I recently moved into 10 Orkney and Kenneth (one of the property managers) has been phenomenal. I have emailed him about a bunch of little things and he has been so attentive and doesn't make me feel like I am bothering him.
