This is an old and known spot in Asheville . The warm and welcoming mountaineer neon signs are always a friendly way to know you have made it to Asheville. We used to stay close by but decided to give this place a try. The positives are is that it is in a great location close to downtown. It's quite affordable. The staff seemed helpful. The complimentary breakfast was pretty basic but better than nothing . The negatives, the room was not made once during our stay . Perhaps it was due to the winter weather but I needed to ask for fresh towels every day . The room itself was decent but I believe they use digital antenna for the rooms as the signal for the tv was pretty poor. The rooms and the bathrooms were looking pretty outdated. We checked in after a LONG and tough day of hiking. Got our room and went straight to shower. The shower had no light in it, so it was dark. No shampoo or conditioner. Water took forever to actually heat up. It was very dated, which wasn't really an issue for us. There was no mattress cover on the mattress, ewww The bed was way to soft, sat down and sank The smoke detector was missing!! SAFETY HAZARD!!! I wasn't about to risk my life to stay there. Chances are it would have been fine, but why risk it. You couldn't control the temperature of the room we were in. It was hot. There is no laundry facilities on site like it says in the listing. After hiking a few days, we needed to wash clothes and picked this motel partly due to that. When we tried to get a refund, they refused because we had been there more than 15 minutes. We went straight to shower as we were filthy. Right after the shower as soon as I sat down, I noticed the issues. We were there maybe an hour. Girl at front desk was polite and just doing what the boss says. I will now have to dispute charges with my credit card company. Stayed at another hotel down the road and it's much nicer. Convenient location. Lots of places to eat nearby and shop. We were in town for The Dark Horizon Tour and it was very nice navigating to. The hotel itself is pretty worn down. Very basic commodities. The pictures on here are not accurate at all lol. I suggest going to the website or looking at review photos (I didn't take any because I was plastered and tired). Pros - y'all that AC was bumping. My fiancé said it was too cold but I loved it. Slept like a baby because of it. Didn't use it, but the pool looked very nice! Cons - was kinda easy to hear neighbors, but really not that bad considering the proximity of the road as well. Checkout guy was a complete jerk for no real reason other than wanting to finish his cigarette more than his job. Pillows could've been more floofed too (but that's me reaching). Overall you get what you pay for and for a quick one night crash this is a safe place. Others outside were pretty chill outside smoking and talking. The good: it is located in a spot that is VERY convenient to stores, restaurants, and several attractions. Also, the pool is nice, except it was never filled properly while we were there, so the filter couldn't work properly and it was full of bugs. It was okay overall, but I had A LOT of "well, you get what you pay for" moments...to the point that I felt like I didn't. The rest: One major sticking point for me was that the tv was broken and had lines going through it. I initially called to make sure they didn't blame me for it, (since they take a $100 deposit for your stay) and was told they would take care of it. Before we left for our first full day, the maintenance guy stopped me and said he would take care of it, the front desk guy said they would take care of it when I called when we returned in the evening, then the morning staff after our second night said, "Oh, didn't someone talk to you?" and proceeded to explain that TVs have to be programmed, etc. (they would literally have to plug the cable into it, as the cable receiver is separate.) She then looked to see if there was a room we could switch tv's with. She then wandered off and never bothered to complete our conversation. Late afternoon on day 3, I called the desk again, and was told they just located a tv 30 mins prior and could get it up to me. They did finally change it out and the guy was really nice, but we spent 2 nights out of 4 with no tv and no one seemed overly concerned. During our stay I had to report the light in the bath glitching (stopped working for hours, then turned on again), and the toilet taking 3 tries to flush fully, housekeeping not bothering to empty our garbage that we left outside so she wouldn't have to clean the entire room, and the a/c unit (a broken down piece of garbage, but at least it worked) leaking water all over the carpet, which I only noticed because my shoes and rucksack next to it were wet. (***I have to note here that the front desk/maintenance guy was left on his own, and was very nice and helpful. He took the time to come back and check out the unit, as well as chat for a few. Very nice guy, they are just understaffed.) Finally, on day 4, we left the towels out on our chairs as requested. The towels were taken and none were left for us. We didn't even have a washcloth left. Lol I called the desk around 5 pm to advise them that we needed towels and was told they would get them up to us soon. Called again at 10 pm, and was told they hadn't forgotten about us, and asked if I really needed them tonight. Yes, seriously. Aside from the room and staff issues, there were people walking by our room at all hours, talking loudly and walking their loudly barking dogs. The place seems to have a great camera system, so I wasn't too concerned in terms of safety, but it made it fairly difficult to sleep. I stayed here last Friday night since I was up in Asheville for a weekend-long yoga training class and the first day was from 6-9 pm and because I had a busy day teaching (not yoga) at work, I wanted to be alert for the 2nd day too (as I needed to drive back Sat night to teach at an event that ended past 11 pm). . . And I'm not sure what's going on with hotel prices, but they keep increasing!! All the ones I've stayed at before had jumped in price and there were hardly any availabilities that's in the price range and distance. In fact, I've unconsciously noticed this "Inn" before as it's on Tunnel Road and right down a few from other places I've stayed. The Mountaineer In when driving at night, has it's bright signage and picture lighting up on top of the hill. You actually have to drive up a steep driveway, one way only, to reach the office It was a very hot sunny day, and I drove directly from work in Greenville, SC, approximately 90 miles away. Love the scenery. As I went up the steep driveway, I saw the sign about free wifi, breakfast and noticed the outdoor pool and admonished myself for completely forgetting to bring my bathing suit! Not only was it perfect pool weather, but I had about two hours before class started. Oh well, I have plenty of emails to do, so I parked right by the office space, and proceeded to the entrance door but wasn't sure where it was . . . No, I wasn't dehydrated, it was confusing and now I wished I took a photo. There was a counter ledge by a window that gave instructions in case you arrived after office was closed. Since it was before 4 pm, it would be open but the adjacent door was a solid wooden door with no windows, and was closed, and what was clearly one of the room with it's door open and a guy was chilling out on the seat outside the door. In fact, it looked many doors had a chair outside. The guy must have been able to read the befuddled expression on my face, and said, that door there is the office and yeah, it's confusing. Inside the 'office' is actually more like a lodge lobby with a whole bunch of stuff on the walls. Makes me think of a much smaller scale Cracker Barrel, as there were some bistro style tables and chairs, some big cushion couch chairs that I could probably find in my parents basement since they don't throw things away, stands with magazine of Asheville, counter with microwave, toaster, etc and further in, the counter to the desk receptionist except no desk, just counter between the lobby and the open office. I'd call this more like a motel but with some major character!! Check-in was pretty straightforward. Password to WiFi is on the key card. Breakfast was served in this lobby area starting at 7 am maybe. Saturday's class started at 9 am and it was a 5 min drive so I wouldn't need to check out until after 8 am. My room was in the building in the upper area. I would need to drive between the two front building and go past. Room was a standard motel room . . Two beds, though also couch, table, chair, dresser with TV and those darn loud AC unit that was blasting when I got in. Hey, I'm happy when the room is clean, even if it's a bit dark and drab, and especially if there's no bugs, which there weren't any. After all, I was looking for an inexpensive place, I spent less than $100. I do realize I could stay in Airbnb for less, but I didn't want to worry about going through someone's house to my room. Most Airbnb in Asheville involves renting out a room vs renting their entire space The room had coffee maker and coffee, a microwave, even a mini-fridge. I didn't use the TV, but definitely did with the wifi for email. I didn't discover until the next morning when too late that no shampoo. I had just pulled mine out from my toiletry bag, but fortunately I had just cut my hair so good ole oxygenated hydrogen worked well. There may have been a path to head even further up . . . Hmm, maybe to the mountain?! As someone with his dog went that direction. I was surprised to see the bright No Vacancy sign on when I came back. Actually leaving is a bit hard. You go in opposite direction down the steep head, facing towards the gas station. Fortunately there is a traffic light to the main Tunnel Road but the parking lot feeds into an adjacent road. You just need to be patient before getting to the traffic Lights!! Have to say, the breakfast was more than expected, as I didn't expect much. They had Krispy Kreme doughnuts, other breads to select from like English muffins. I was amazed at the fresh fruit. They had those little boxes of cereal, milk, spreads, etc. Checkout was seamless and on my walk down to check out, I got to read the sign about their cement pond . Yup, no water in the pool so at least I didn't miss that! It met my criteria and for others, who stayed at the much nicer newly renovated or built place, she paid twice what I paid. read more

What started as a quaint vintage mountain feel experience turned into my motto of "I hate a cheap hotel." While the place is a great location , has a cozy mountain feel in the middle of Asheville it is not CHEAP when supply and demand is raging in Asheville, costing $200 a night. If the room rate had been lower to More closely match the accommodations my overall rating would be higher. We had little choice but to stay here and the room was fairly clean with a tiny microwave, Frig, & small table . The decor was old , vintage, wood paneling, mountain cabin like. The towels were old, thin , and rough as if they had hung on a line to dry, a couple of very small cheap bars of soap. The real downside of this very old Inn was if you wanted to change the temperature in your room, you had to call front desk as that is how it is controlled . The bed was not comfortable and meets the standard of what you expect in a cheap motel. The walls and doors are very thin as when people smoked outside our room, the smoke smell filled our room. The staff was OK and kudos for keeping such an old establishment going. read more

This place is the very definition of a two star. It is in NO WAY a 3 star. You first get there and see a pool that's visible from the road with a giant roadside. Check in, and talk to the staff at the front who might rip you off. LUCKILY, there is decent security with all their cameras. Walk to your room, and see dozens of people in front of their room smoking cigarettes in their outdoor chairs. Very stinky. Once you get into your room, it will totally smell like cigs. The shower was incredibly sketchy, I refused to use it. The TV was horrible quality. The bed was very, very uncomfortable with horrible pillows and NO SHEETS. Stinky, cig smelling AC. Horrible continental breakfast. Only thing preventing me from giving it 1 star was the price - $67. If you EVER have to pay more than that, choose somewhere else. We stayed at the Mountaineer Inn for a quick overnight trip with friends to Asheville. Don't get me wrong, this hotel is a fine, cheap option as long as you know what you're getting. We literally just needed a place to sleep as we knew we would be out and about all day. The location is very close to everything and the staff is friendly. Beds were fine, but definitely old and not the most comfortable. Now for the downsides. The rooms are dark and extremely out of date, locks on doors didn't seem secure, & other guests sit outside and smoke which I believe made the rooms also smell like smoke. Not sure if we would stay here again unless some of these things changed. read more

After going into three nearby chain hotels, no standard rooms available and less than helpful front desk staff... we drove by the amazing neon signs. A quick stay for $69.99, you can't go wrong. We stumbled upon this piece of nostalgia on our road trip with my little boy and I. When we arrived they were filling the swimming pool. We took a room in the back the view was a brick wall. We felt safe when we got in the room I had to kick the door open, but that added to the charm of the place. The room was a little dated and the curtains did not match but that added to the ambiance! To add to the ambiance there were 2 gentlemen bbqing off their trailer! I recommend this place for the quirkiness! Would give 5 stars but pool was getting filled and could not swim! I will say this about The Mountaineer Inn: my Facebook status after one night of staying here was "Worst. Hotel. Ever. Note to self: when reading hotel reviews, 'quaint' means dirty, 'kitchy' means old, and 'charming' means there is probably a dead hooker stuffed in the mattress." While I cannot blame the hotel for the excessively loud party that went on until 4:00 AM in the room next to us, I can find fault with the paper thin walls and no lock on our door other than the dinky knob lock - hence the reason we did not call the front desk in the middle of the night and complain, and why my husband slept with a knife next to the bed. There were cigarette burns all over our "non-smoking" room. The "complimentary breakfast" was a rusty toaster and a bag of bagels on a folding table. The place was just all-over icky. Now I'm not a princess, I've stayed in some pretty bare-bones places, one of my favorite things to do while traveling is trying out "different" type places to stay, but there's just no excuse for pure filth. We wore shoes the whole time so we didn't have to put our feet on the floor, and if it hadn't been so late when we got there we probably would have stopped by K-Mart to get our own sheets. Actually, if it was early enough to go to K-Mart, we probably would have just gone and found somewhere else. We had booked two nights, but after one horrible night's sleep, we left and checked into the Holiday Inn Asheville Downtown (which I HIGHLY recommend). Never. Again. You have been warned. read more

The only room available was smoking, but that doesn't excuse the stains on the 45 year-old carpet. Other things that haven't been updated since 1970+/-: furniture, toilet, shower, bathroom floor, mattresses, phone. One mattress slants up, the other down. YUCK. At least they advertised "long-term" instead of "hourly rates." Update (the morning after): I must have been placed in the spare room in the back. No more stars though. It seems that the front rooms have been updated, since I saw new windows. I didn't stick around to investigate. The first thing I'll say is use your money elsewhere. My girlfriend and I stayed here after staying at the Econo Lodge the previous night. I've read that the staff was friendly, but I guess they are only friendly to people their age. No smiles or friendly attitude for us. (We are in our middle 20's). Pros: Great central location, free breakfast, cable, and is charming for the first 5 seconds. Cons: Stained carpet (multiple places), cigarette burns on the bed cover, very lumpy pillows, dirty bathroom counter, duct tape on the door, mini fridge, and window, a moldy/dusty odor in the entire room, no AC, and the wifi does not extend to all rooms. I've experienced better and I've experienced much worse! Extended stay hotels are usually garbage quality and attractive because of their low prices. We stayed here for $50 for one night. I would recommend this place if you just need an affordable bed to put your head on for the night. It's not the cleanest of places, so if you are by any means a germaphobic, don't stay here. You can pay double that price to stay somewhere to your liking. This place is pretty old school and raggedy, but it was kind of retro and cool to stay here in a way. While the rooms are dated, they are clean and spacious. The property is well maintained outside as well. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The free breakfast is self serve but has plenty of variety, including yogurt and fresh fruit. The location is very convenient to downtown. Most importantly, it feels very safe relative to some other discount properties. No drug deals or prostitution anywhere we could see, which is probably because they don't book anyone who lives within 50 miles. Good policy. Will try to book again on our next Asheville excursion. I stayed at the hotel the weekend before Christmas. I checked in Friday night. The room had two beds. I slept in one bed Friday night. Saturday night, I got very ill. I got up, took a shower and got into the other bed. The next morning, I woke-up and found dried and caked blood on the sheets. It wasn't my blood, but blood from a previous guest. I took the sheet to the front desk, explained what happened and waited for two weeks for a manager to call me since, I was told she was on vacation, as was the owner. Today I was told they would not refund my money since I stayed the weekend and didn't tell them until Sunday when I checked out. I was extremely disappointed in my recent stay at The Mountaineer Inn. My fiancé and I booked online for a wedding based on reviews on another site saying that while the rooms were nothing fancy, they were clean and comfortable. That was not our experience at all. We noticed immediately that the room smelled musty, and when we looked around we found mildew, mold, and water damage. The table in the room had a completely destroyed leg, and most of the light bulbs over the sink were out. My fiancé has asthma, and his chest felt tight within about 5 minutes of being in the room. We had to go straight to a rehearsal dinner after we checked in, but stopped at the desk to request that they turn on the air conditioning in our room (can't access from the room) because we hoped it might help. When we got back the room was horribly hot and stank even more. We went to the front desk multiple times to ask about the AC before finally falling asleep. In the morning, my fiancé was wheezing, I was coughing, and we both felt awful. We requested help from the travel website we used for this booking and headed out for the day. The travel site recommended changing rooms, but since we knew there were no vacancies (the front desk mentioned it when we checked in), that wasn't really an option. We spent as much time at the wedding festivities as possible and came back super late. Once again, our room was hot, musty, and miserable. We went back to the front desk to ask for AC again, but were miserable the entire night. We got up early the next day to leave, and sent a complaint with the travel site. My fiancé and I are not prissy people- we've both stayed in all kinds of hostels, trailers, motels, etc. in the past with no problems. We don't need anything fancy, but we DO think it was ridiculous to pay a premium for a dirty room that made both of us feel sick. The people who work here were very friendly and helpful! They seemed to really enjoy what they were doing and take pride in it. The owner is an very nice, elderly gentleman who works on site. He took time to say hello to my kids and made an impact with them, which means a lot to me. The breakfast is a plus here. There were doughnuts, bagels, and fresh fruit (strawberries, bananas, apples). The office/lobby area is set up very nicely and is welcoming. The pool is large with a neat shape and a nice deck. It goes 8-9 feet deep in places and 2-4 feet in the shallow end. There's a cool, retro vibe to this motel! Think 1960's throwback inside the room and out. Room has cool wood walls and charming, 60's vibe with a few updates. If I were looking for a place for creative inspiration (writing, etc...) this would be a good choice. Unfortunately, there was a lot I didn't like... Cleanliness is a big problem here. Although the bedding appeared clean, the rest of the place is filthy. The carpet, walls, shower curtain, were nasty. I felt filthy when staying here and worried about bugs (I only saw a few) and what was lying below the surface. The sanitation rating posted in the office shows a 92, but it's hugely inaccurate. A not-so-great bonus surprise was finding someone else's old, dirty clothes in a dresser drawer as we were leaving. This place is not for small kids. We stayed in the 2 story building up front. The railing only went up mid-thigh on me, which is a huge safety hazard for small kids. Expect a lot of cigarette smoke as the designated smoking area is right out in front of each room (lawn chair and ashtray supplied by hotel every 20 feet or so). There was noise all night from people living at the motel. I heard some (possible) fighting nearby, which made me a little anxious. You would not want your kids playing inside the hotel room on the carpet or surfaces. It's seriously icky! Additionally, expect: no deadbolt on the door, bathroom window hanging open because the lock was painted over, sporadic hot water (expect some cold showers). The pricing for this room should have been in the $30-$40 range. We paid around $60, which I feel was way too much. As memorable as this place was, I won't be back. I'm still disinfecting my belongings from our visit and the thought of the room still makes my skin crawl. read more

. We knew we were only staying in Asheville one night and would just need a place to lay our heads. Let me say right off that I love staying in retro vintage hotels. The caveats being that I must feel safe and they must be clean. The Mountaineer Inn missed on both counts. I am a solo traveler most of the time and my doors and windows must be secure especially when you park right at your door. Flimsy chain lock and a door that could easily be picked open plus a screen door with no latch, is a no. I also travel with my own sheets and Lysol because I've found I'd rather be safe than sorry. But I am not going to scrub someone else deposit off the floor and I an not going to scrub mold off the shower. There is just no excuse for that in rooms that are turned over daily. But the straw was the bugs. I mean 5 different kinds. The worst being the largest camel back cricket I have ever seen in my life and a pink/yellowish spider with black eyes. Looked that one up on Google later and found out it was a sac spider and that its bites cause necrosis. Next time I'll pack Raid! too. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is the check in woman is flat awesome, and the bed was just to my liking. I hope they will work on their cleaning practices and hire an exterminator. Or at least spray down the rooms periodically. read more

The proprietress of this establishment is senile. Refused to accept my Hotwire reservation - first saying I needed to pay her more than I'd already paid the booking service, then saying that she doesn't rent rooms to to people without a car. Absurd. She ended up calling Hotwire and refunding my money- At eleven thirty PM, leaving me stranded in a Waffle House until the Grove Park could get me in at six. Avoid. It looks gnarly, anyway. read more

Bed was shaped liked a skateboard halfpipe, pillows were like rite aid cotton ball bags stuffed into a pillow case, sink wouldn't drain, gnats coming in from somewhere, shower literally the size of a phone booth and if youre too hot or cold, have to call the office to get adjusted. Howdy partner Gather round for a a little tale about the mountaineer inn. It was a beautiful early September evening in the mountains of Asheville and as we opened the door to our room we were hit in the face with the smell of musty cigarettes. That was clue number one that this was no ordinary motel. After setting our stuff down we laid down on the bed and rolled to the middle. Reminded me of the good ole days of sleeping on futon. Clue 2 Decided it was time to take a shower , it was a dark and scary little box barely big enough to turn around in and with no where but the ground to set your toiletries. Turned on the water, to the left fire water, to the right cold water, in the middle it just turned it off. As I wrestled with water temperature I noticed that my ankles were staying nice a warm cause the water wasn't draining. As my shampoo bottles swam around the bottom of the shower pan I finished up grabbed a towel that had the softness of a cactus. Seriously I have used softer callus removers on my heels. I had just about had enough but my partner hates it when I complain so I cried myself to sleep in frustration and in the morning calmly went in the office to complain about the situation. I was told no refunds but they would give me a different room. Ok This room was much nicer, bed was firm, carpet cleaner bathroom 1990's instead of 40's. Still smelled like musty cigarettes. If you hate the smell of cigarettes do not stay here. In front of every door is a chair and a cigarette bucket. The last straw was when I went to the bathroom turned around to flush and noticed the seat was stained with a strange brown rusty colored smear. Oh dear lord tell me that's actually the pattern . Now I have had toddlers, I have seen some things but this was outrageous. Washed my hands Packed my bags and went to the office. I was told by the very friendly staff that I could have a partial refunded basically making my one night in this road side shitter $130. Renegotiated with girl who was absolutely sure she was going to get fired and was almost to the point of tears to $99 for the night. Do not recommended in any way. Flies all over the room, horrid smell of mold and cigarettes, no water pressure, a bed that you sit in one spot and it's a brick and you move to the other side and it collapses (how is that even possible?), sketchy people hanging out in front of literally every room -- not sure what the worst part is, but you can take your pick. I stayed in the room for 15 minutes, found a room up the road and was promised a refund. I'll let you guess if they ever gave it to me (times up, they didn't). If your options are stay here or on the side of the highway, definitely stay on the highway. You'll be safer and there will be less bugs. This place gets a -100 stars. read more

Place was clean, staff was friendly and informative. Continental breakfast was good with fresh fruit . Walking into town is further than expected about 40 mins. There was numerous transients in the area. Best to take an Uber which was about $10. For our protection there were serial camera and lights around the property which made sleeping a little difficult . Shower was very small and water pressure was low. Overall the room was comfortable and secure. Good place to stay overnight. Wouldn't recommend for women traveling alone ! read more

It was late, we were tired, and the neon sign is 50's kitsch. We were hoping for Rat Pack cool. Silly us. Not even a pack of Norwegian wharf rats would stay at this place. I'm pretty sure our room had not been cleaned for a while. The last maid in there had neither a sense of pride nor a sense of smell. I'm thinking the collection of pubic hairs in the tub (2 different colors!) was left as a sort of welcome gift surprise. While we appreciated the thought, twas a tad too kinky for us. There were no toiletries, save the ubiquitous tiny bar of paper-wrapped crappy soap. The towels appeared white and had a faint bleach odor, so I deemed them safe enough to dry my face. I did not, however, step into the tub for a shower. No, a ponytail and a little extra deodorant would have to suffice, thank you very much. The A/C unit was built by a person who thought A/C stood for "Acrid Coughs" and so our room had that special smell granted only by an ineffectual A/C unit on a humid night. Mmmm, like a low-budget nursing home! Although I'm an animal rights activist, and I do believe that fleas, roaches, and bedbugs have as much a right to life as we humans, I was not in the mood that night to offer a blood sacrifice. So we slept on top of the covers, fully clothed. And by "slept" I mean we lay there hoping whatever disease we caught that night from either the adorable bugs or whatever lay festering in the dank decades-old carpet would be easily cured by a round of Amoxicillin and a juicing fast. Our thoughts were kept company by the rather lively drunk people partying outside our door. They waxed philosophic with great candor and vigor. Inspiring, really. Having survived the night relatively unscathed, albeit sleep-deprived and smelling somewhat of mildew, we stepped bravely into the bright dawn. Our feet happily crunched upon the scattering of Doritos bags and beer cans left us by the revelers, and we made our way to the office window to pay. Major surprise - the attendant not only had all of his front teeth, but was rather friendly! A surprising end to a night that can only be described as, well... horrendous. This is my first one-star review here, but dare I say it was earned. And if you read my other hotel reviews, you'll see that I was bitten by an unknown bug in the dark at a Days Inn in Virginia and I still gave that place 4 stars, so I'm not exactly a diva. My story: I booked my room for $50 a few weeks in advance. Great price for Asheville, with great-looking photos of the hotel. Bad reviews interspersed, but honestly if you care more about kitschy character and value than pseudo-spas, bad reviews roll off your back. And upon arriving at the hotel, my hopes appeared justified - the neon and gigantic Jed Clampettish guy with the serious spelling issues gave it the Hillbilly Route 66 vibe I wanted. Then I went to check in. There were a few others waiting. The elderly lady working informed me I was "out of luck", that they were out of rooms. When I told her I had a reservation, she gave me a dead look back and repeated. However one of the guys waiting was not actually checking in but handing back keys for a room that he refused to stay in - Room 129. This became my only shot, on a night when apparently every other hotel in Asheville was booked. Gotta love that choice. The old lady at the desk made a comment that the rejection probably happened because 129 was on a lower level. (In retrospect, I can't tell if she was in denial or just being cynical.) So I booked it. The good: the room looks just as kitschy as you'd hope - wood paneling, a 30-year-old Zenith tv, screen doors, etc. The bad: - the room had a HORRIBLE smell. Couldn't tell if it was moisture in the carpet (as the carpet all over the room was wet) or mold. Toilet seat had dark coloration that at least suggested latter. I survived by breathing through my mouth. My wife later said, "I've stayed in places where my safety has been at risk, but this is the first time I've stayed at a place where my health is at risk!" - My kids had fallen asleep on the drive so I laid them on the bed as is. I got in the other bed and felt dirt under the pillow. I also felt dirt throughout the night as I shifted - unprompted, my 7-year-old reported the same from her bed later the next day. My wife and I decided to sleep with our clothes on to be safe. - in the middle of the night, my wife heard a buzzing that turned out to be a bee or wasp in the room. (I guess the former based on other reviews.) She trapped it in the bathroom and with that we said to each other, ENOUGH. As soon as our kids showed signs of waking the next morning, we rushed them out of bed and straight into the car. Keys dropped off at the front and we were off. No matter what, our day was guaranteed to improve from there. From reviews, there are apparently good and bad rooms, and not all are this bad. If that's the case, this place should do us all a favor and just shut down the 129-style rooms, or offer them at a $5 "buyer beware" rate or something. I will NEVER give them another chance. And geez, if someone reserves a room then for goodness sake just hold the room! Or call if a phone number is listed before you potentially ruin someone's night. This place looks great from the outside, but it's deeply flawed internally. Let's hope some of that mountain air cleans out these people's senses. read more

We stayed here for two nights in Asheville. From the road it looks like a hotel trapped in the 50s-60s when road travel was more interesting- the funny, kitschy mountaineers outlined in neon definitely symbolize that. This inn definitely had that kind of rustic, kitschy charm, but definitely was an affordable and comfortable stay. First off, I was able to communicate with them via email about making reservations. They said it would be no problem as long as I got there not too late on the day (since I didn't put down a card). Upon our arrival and check in we were greeted by the owner, Kris who was the embodiment of older Greek grandpa- he was soooooo nice! he talked us up and gave us some advice about the area. His service was just a nice touch to the whole experience- definitely different from the corporate hotels we had stayed in prior. Our room was pretty huge, had AC, and two comfortable full size beds. The bathroom was small, but all the baths we had were about the same size. There was a mini fridge and an upgraded tv in the room and actual furniture- armchair, tables, dresser, etc. The best part of the room- the timed sun light in the bathroom! The light was kind of dim in the bathroom but when you turned that sucker on it was like Florida-sunny! It was nice on the gloomy morning we woke up to. The location is on Tunnel Road- no more than ten minutes from downtown Asheville, as well as the blue ridge parkway (which we were using a departing point when we headed towards the Smoky Mountains). It was also by plenty of chain restauranst and local chains, supermarkets, banks, post office, etc that you can easily drive to. Definitely an affordable stay- about 60 per night for a comfortable place to lay our head at the end of very busy days. read more

I just had a great, affordable sleep at the Mountaineer Inn. After hearing prices over $100 for anywhere near downtown Asheville, I settled on room 109 for $49. The first room I looked at smelled like cigarettes, so I picked another one. The owner is an elderly Greek gentleman with lots of stories and a great sense of humor. He was happy to let me check out late, and he's just altogether agreeable. The room was modest and old-school with clean linens. Sure, it could use a new carpet, but for $50 I wasn't expecting a honeymoon suite... Temperature is controlled in the winter by opening and closing the vents. Decent water pressure and a clean bathroom. I needed to open a bottle of red, and the owner readily pulled out a wine bottle opener, informing me that he makes much better wine himself! Evidently this guy has been running this hotel since 1964! read more

Despite the retro charm of the design and all that neon signage, there's not much to recommend about The Mountaineer. The room was a mess - broken furniture, cigarette burn on the sheet, pry marks on the door, cracked sink, towel bar inexplicably missing, towel puzzlingly stuck in the acoustical tiles. The carpet was filthy too - I stepped on a plastic clothes tag that wasn't mine. The walls are really thin, which I found out at 5 in the morning when I was able to catch my neighbors' entire conversation through the walls, rousing me from sleep. And speaking of sleep - the mattresses were terrible. They're really old mattresses - so old that the BeautyRest tags had a long-since-retired logo. I can't discern what year they are from, but they're old. read more

This is the worst place I have ever stayed. We had sheets with cigarette burns, the rooms smell like an ash tray, no soap, the fridge was iced over, no wireless Internet and a 1983 zenith tv. When I told Chris, the owner, he blamed us for the cigarette burns and threatened to charge us for damages. This guy is a crook and should not be trusted. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. This dump would be a bad deal for free. read more

I feel bad for anyone who skips this hotel because of the low star rating. This hotel is clean, close to downtown, fairly priced, and has ton of character and history. Also, the 90 year old owner Chris is friendly. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! They called, ruining our vacation because our dogs were barking after 10pm. When they called it wasn't even 10pm!!! When we called back abs told them they didn't stop the partiers outside our room the previous night at 3:30am they blew that off. When we arrived back at our hotel room we even knocked to see what the dogs would do and they didn't make the smallest noise. When we called and asked for the person at the front desks name they said they could not give it, argued, and then hung up repeatedly. There is a party if 15 people going on outside but they are worried about 2 dogs. This is the worst place to stay. It already had a dirty bathtub, mirror, no parking, no control of the air/heat, and broken tv so this takes the cake. DO NOT STAY HERE!! SPEND THE $50 EXTRA A NIGHT TO STAY ACROSS THE STREET WHERE THEY CARE ABOUT ALL THEIR GUESTS AND NOT JUST THE WHITE TRASH ONES! If I could give zero stars I would. read more

Incredibly dirty! Half of the light bulbs are missing from my room, I found a lot of dog feces under the TV stand, dirt under the bed sheets, no lock on the door, and I will be leaving asap. Sorry people but please don't stay here. read more
