I love this little grocery store tucked away in North Beach. It has a great variety of foods, brands, and even a good assortment of personal care products (if you're needing something in a pinch). The guy working on the weekends (employee? owner? not sure) is nice and polite and always has a smile when we're there. We enjoy picking up unique beer and ciders from the wide assortment in the fridges in the second half, as well as finding interesting cheeses. It's also great for the one or two things you might need that evening or snacks for later. My only complaint is I wish I lived closer so I could go a bit more often! read more

This convenient little shop has an excellent wine selection and lots of upscale consumable options. Their wine pricing is also often less than the average prices listed on Vivino. It's a grocery store, but has a bit of a boutique and rich vibe. It's one of the few places to get Mary's Chicken in the area and I have to get chocolate every time I go in there. The ambiance seems very hygienic to me, so I feel drawn into the place when I walk by. The Nature Stop has nice stuff, but my review has to be in earnest... maybe 2 or 3 stars? It's annoying that through several iterations of ridiculousness, you have to expect encountering some unnecessary and incompetent problem during each transaction. Two different cashiers didn't seem to understand the concept of tare weight. They weighed the meat with the packaging and attempted to charge me for it, despite the fact that the weight of the meat was printed directly on the packaging. I've worked in a meat department before and I have never seen that kind of inept behavior. It's insulting to the customer. So at the present time, the 2021 Domaine Bousquet Malbec is $11.99 here. The cashier scanned it and it came up as zero. He joked that it was free, but then had the audacity to offer me the obviously more expensive reserve price of $16.99, like the reserve one right next to it, and laughed in my face. I passed as I knew that Trader Joe's has the exact same thing for $9.99. Tonight, the Elysian 'tiger beer', listed at $13.99, rang up at $17.99, the same as their space dust. I passed, but they should at least have offered to have honored the price they had printed out for customers to read. The Space Dust IPA at S&S Market, one block away, was $15.99, so I bought it there and got to pet their cat too. It's a bit of a first world problem, but I didn't notice until being at home that my $6.25 chocolate bar, which is more than I made hourly when younger, was comprised of the wrong variety. I grabbed the chocolate bar behind the front one, to avoid the most touched one. It is a berry chocolate bar instead of the ginger one, and it's great, but still, the employees should be better at recovery. I was one of about two people in the store and it was not busy. I recommend going to this place to get ideas. Double check all the prices and shop around, but they have great merchandise. My suggestion to the owner is to install a self-checkout. This is a little gem of a store in this North Beach neighborhood. How lucky to be able to just walk here and get fine wines, cheeses, bread, coffee, vegan/vegetarian, charcuterie, fresh produce! I think that's it's unfair for reviewers to complain about the "expensive" prices compared to Safeway, Whole Foods or TJs. You cannot compare prices between a small business, like a the Nature Stop vs national chain stores w/ enormous buying power. Honestly, I appreciate that they have name brands like Columbus, FraMani, Cowgirl Creamery, Clover, Point Reyes cheese, Jeremiah coffee, Oatly, Kerrygold, Bob's Red Mill, Annie's frozen food. They even have Bell & Evan's frozen chicken tenders which I can only find at Whole Foods! They carry Laura Chenel goat cheeses, Rustic Bakery crackers, vegan cheeses, smoked salmon, Uncured deli meats, bacon, sausages, some fresh meat, lots of organic selections - from cheeses, to bread, produce, dry goods. And they carry Avalon Organics body products among many sustainable grocery items. Also the owner/employees are trying their best to serve their customers. Did you know you that you can write suggestions of items you want to see and they will try to source them for you? These are some of the friendliest people I know! I live two blocks away from here and already avoid this place despite the lack of grocers in the neighborhood. Way overpriced for the typical "Safeway" items, and a really poor selection. Today I just wanted to grab some yogurt, so i went in saw a buy-one-get-one-free item, and decided to get two. The cashier charged me for both and when I mentioned there was a sign stating buy-one-get-one-free, he immediately responded "nope," without hesitation. Fortunately the sign was in eyesight so I just pointed to it and asked him what it said. Whole new take on "the customer is always right." Don't bother--this place can only stay open because people go out drinking on Grant street and North Beach has no full grocery store. read more

This place is great! I might have just discovered my new favorite salad bar. Picture this: dolmas, chickpea salad, delicious beets, avocado, peppers, jalapenos, carrots, olives, tomatoes, and more! And it's just $4.99 per pound! I spend $2.74 this morning for tons of beets (I'm obsessed), two dolmas (really good), a little bit of chick pea salad, and some avocado for our omelette. Awesome! The Nature Stop has been doing a North Beach body good for 3 decades. If it weren't for TNS, the ratio between healthy versus unhealthy would be even more pronounced in this neighborhood. Do you know how many bars & restaurants there are in NB? We really need the balance of a completely health conscious establishment to counteract all the surrounding debauchery. We owe you NS. There's a full juice bar to get our wheat grass concoction du jour on. I don't do it so much anymore, but if I do, I like to order a grasshopper. 2/3 carrot juice, 1/3 apples, a bit of beet, a squeeze of lemon, & a shot of wheatgrass. I can't stand the taste of wheatgrass on its own. The carrot & apple juices balance out the bitterness. Trust. It's a small shop, so the selection reflects that. It is not a full service grocery store, & it's not supposed to be. So if that's what you need, you'll obviously be dissatisfied here. But they carry all the staples, complete w the bins of nuts & healthy treats along the back wall. When you're stocking up on almonds & cashews, grab some malt balls, too. Balance. The veggie sandwich is good, but the deli hours can vary. So if you're hoping to order a sammie, you might want to call first. I've been in the neighborhood for over 20 years. The owners & the staff have never been rude to me, & I've never witnessed them being rude to anyone else. And Charles is a total gem. Sad this place has gone so downhill. The produce is usually old, sometimes moldy. Today the corn was moldy, the potatoes had growths and bell peppers were squishy. We thought the prior owner really cared about having quality products but it doesn't seem that way anymore. But, good selection of dry goods, even though expensive. read more

Can't get more neighborhood and local than this shop! They have all the vitamins and supplements behind the register counter and are eager to help. For being a small shop, they sure know how to layout the store well and have ample supplies in the grocery, wine, and organic veggies/fruits areas. I also enjoyed the fact that they have oddball items I was looking for (like cider vinegar pills and quinoa pasta). The prices are not bad for an organic and natural store - and now that I know they are there, I will try to support them on a regular basis as it's just a short walk if you live in North Beach! read more

Convienent market in north beach that's open late (9pm). Great for when you've done your whole foods shopping for the week and you realize you've forgotten something at dinner time. Prices are average and they've got a good selection of produce, spices, snacks, and organic beauty products. The downside? no meat! If the item you forgot was chicken, fish, or beef you're totally SOL here. Also, I just want to add that the abundance of stoned out hippies working here is making this a less than favorable place to shop. Half the time they don't even acknowledge you with a hello on approaching the counter. It takes forever just to check out. When the total arises, they justed looked up at my boyfriend without even telling him the total! I've had snotty people cut right in front of me (and my fiance had the same thing happen) and despite my "excuse me!" the salesperson ignored my protests and continued ringing the cutter up. I just want someone to say "hello" and wait on people in turn and just be cordial! Is that so much to ask? read more

This is one of the saving graces of this section of North Beach. With all the shitty strip clubs (and the even worse people they attract), tourists, and over-priced italian food, the Nature Stop is a cool, locally-owned shop. It's great for quick meals, treats, produce, vitamins, healthy and body goods and more. One of my favorite parts of their store is the little deli/smoothie bar on the right as you first come in. Here you can get delicious tofu and falafel sandwiches for some very reasonable prices (I think $4 or $5.) They also have a wide variety of smoothies that can be freshly made, as well as the wonderful smoothie of the day for only $2.50. Even the salad bar next to it is always well-stocked and decently priced as far as I can remember. If you're vegan, make sure to check out the Monster Cookies and Muffins right in front of the registers. Alternative Baking Company cookies use to by my jam when it came to store bought vegan cookies. But now I'm addicted to these Monster ones (made in San Rafael.) Instead of using cane sugar they are sweetened with fruit juice, and I believe most of them are gluten-free but I could be wrong. I wouldn't do a ton of grocery shopping here because it's definitely not going to be trader joe's priced but if you're nearby and need something quick, you gotta check it out. read more

I walked into the Nature Stop on 12/23/2018 around 5:30 pm. There was a crowd around the register and a man behind the cash register. I was perusing the products when I heard "I need you to leave". When I looked up I saw the man behind the register glaring at me. I thought he was joking around but he repeated that order in a determined tone. When I asked him why he was speaking to me in this manner, he did not answer. I was enraged but quickly decided to just leave the premises and shop elsewhere. I am a recent retiree from a major University in San Francisco. I was honored multiple times over the past year for almost 35 years of dedicated staff and adjunct professor activities. I'm not used to being treated in this manner from anyone, let alone some clerk in a natural food store. I will boycott this business and heartily recommend that others do, also. Rudeness and lack of courtesy seem to be the norm since you know who took up residence in the White House. read more

It's a little expensive but what organic store besides Trader Joes isn't a little pricey. When I lived in NB I swear I came here almost everyday to the deli to get their chicken sandwhich. Sooo amazing. weirdly it's probably one of my favorite places to get lunch. Everything is so fresh and for $5 bucks it's a deal. The store is small but they have some great finds. Downside is I always spend way to much here and end up not getting everything I need. I will probably always stick with Trader Joes. If you want a yummy treat try their almond butter chocolate treats by the register they are better than Cafe Graditudes version. read more

I go to the Nature Stop so often that it doesn't even occur to me to "like" it. Maybe that's why it took me so long to review it. I can't say it inspires warm fuzzies like a favorite coffee shop might, but it serves its purpose well, despite a certain lack of personality. (The counterstaff, with the exception of the friendly Indonesian lady who makes sandwiches, is remarkably taciturn. Maybe they're just super-mellowed out by all the wheatgrass, who knows.) So, here's what keeps me coming back to the NS: 1) The $2 smoothie of the day!!! Such a good deal that it inspires multiple exclamation points!!! The downside? The quality varies wildly depending on who's making it and what fruit they have on hand. My fellow addicted co-workers and I joke about their "$2 smoothie of apple juice and not-quite-pureed grape skins." 2) The salad bar. Spinach, beets, marinated mushrooms, kalamata olives, avocados, hard-boiled eggs, sesame seeds, Annie's Natural dressings...oh my. 3) The $5-ish sandwich counter. Love me my $4.50 tomato/mozzarella/basil sandwich. Or the tofu-veggie burger. Or the tuna salad. Or the... 4) Newman's Own chocolate peppermint cups. 'Nuff said. read more

This place has the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I have ever encountered. I ventured into this store one Friday evening to see if they carried Straus Family milk, and was thrilled that they did, so I grabbed a bottle, 2 bottles of wine, and even placed an order for something else. This morning, Sunday the 6th, I opened the milk (for which I paid $5 for the small) and I realized that it was rotten. My fiance and I proceeded to call the store to explain the matter and see if we could trade in the bottle for a fresh one. The woman on the phone said we could come back to make the exchange. We walked from Nob Hill to Green Street with the bottle in my bag, and I explained the situation to the man with whom I had placed my order on Friday. We were asked for a receipt, met with disbelief, and it got to the point where my fiance had to step in. Another guy stepped in (the owner?) and he said that they could not give us another bottle because I should have "brought the milk back so we could return it to Straus". Did I mention I had the bottle with me--which had the expiration date on the cap? Long story short, they ended up saying they would "let me have the fresh bottle this Time" but I told them they could keep my money--that I would never shop in there again. I highly recommend the Golden Produce market on Church Street if you want Straus milk. They have the gallon jars for the price of the half gallons, and they ALWAYS treat their customers with respect. read more

When I roll into the Nature Stop with all of my bike gear looking super lame, the owner talks to me. When my eyes are half open from a rough night and there are still pillow creases on my face and I need an Apple-A-Day, I get a smile and a hello. Anytime I am in overalls or flannel (yes, I still have all my grunge) I get a look of recognition. However, if I happen to be coming straight from work lookin' all cute and put together, I am lucky if I get a grunt. Seriously, I could buy 70 bucks worth of groceries and not exchange a word. ..But all of that is fine, it is a rough business to run a natural foods store. Sh*t is expensive and expectations are high. I get that, so I don't need a smile, especially when I am extremely glad to have them in our neighborhood. And I think the owner knows that he is a little unpleasant, so he hires others to do that job. Here is a hint: if you need a smile, look for long hair. read more

I'm torn on this review. I feel like I should give it more stars bc I go here at least twice a week, and I'm not sure what I'd do without it in the neighborhood. But also feel like it deserves fewer stars for the prices, selection, and quality...so I will average out at 3. It's really nice to have an organic market in the neighborhood, and they carry a good selection of produce, wine, canned goods and other non-perishables, juices, and snacks (and Casa Sanchez salsa!). I can always find the ingredients I need for a good vegetarian dinner. My gripes: many items are expired (check the labels!), bulk items can be stale, produce is often past its prime, very few meat options (ground beef, chicken breast, packaged sausage, and a few cured meats on a good day), poor cheese selection, rarely have fresh bread, and prices are higher than Whole Foods. That said, I can deal with most of these shortcomings, as I've learned what to buy and not buy here (don't bother with meat, and go down the street to Little Vine for cheese and French Italian Bakery for bread). I'll continue to use it to supplement my regular grocery shopping and for those last-minute items that I prefer to buy organic. read more

No, you don't come here for their customer service. But if you live in the neighborhood, you come here for the convenience. Need that last minute kale or spinach for a salad? They have it! Friend is coming over and you ran out of wine? They have a decent selection. In the mood for some gluten-free pasta? You got it! Fancy some cheese, or polenta, or organic chocolate? You can get it here. Although I do my weekly shopping at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, for whatever reason I find myself every now and then here either because I forgot something or really just browsing with a yoga friend after class. In those crazy weeks where I cannot do any real grocery shopping, I like to know that Nature Stop is right there to save the day. read more

If you think of this place as a healthier 7-Eleven rather than a full-blown market, then you'll have a much better understanding of what you can or cannot find at this store. They're a "health food oriented" convenience store in North Beach. This is a place I go when I don't have time for lunch. I run in, grab an Amy's frozen something-or-other or a box o'Tasty Bite, pay, and run back to work. They don't have the biggest selection of anything in particular, but they do have organic produce. They have some "staples" on hand (for example, they don't carry all the Bach Flower Remedies, but they do, at least, have Rescue Remedy behind the counter). I have never seen the same person working here twice, so I don't expect anyone to be knowledgeable about what they carry or why. Things move around based on shelf space and availability. But I'm grateful this place exists, because i don't have time to run over the hill to Trader's Joe or down to SOMA to Whole Foods on my lunch hour. Is this the greatest market in the world? No. But I sure wish we had one of these in the Haight. read more

Of all the times I've gone to the Nature Stop, I realize I usually leave the store with only a handful of limes, some salad fixin's and alcohol. I always go in with good intentions to buy healthy stuff, but I just can't bring myself to pay $4.99 for semi-special salad dressing or $3.99 for a small box of "organic" crackers. I guess if you go there with the intentions to get just leafy greens and vegis you will be surprised by the price because they are comparable to larger stores. One thing I can't walk out with: LIMES My favorite Margarita recipe of all time requires tons of fresh lime juice. The Nature Stop is one of the only places I know in North Beach to carry 5 limes for a dollar (and 6 packs of beer for just $8.99, Corona anyone?) The only other thing there that has really knocked my socks off is the packaged Bonta Emiliane Gnocchi for under $3.00. It is fresh and better than that frozen stuff. The staff have been willing to help but plan on waiting at least 10 minutes if you order a sandwich from the deli... order at the beginning, gather things from your list, doddle a bit down the wine isle, poke around the natural beauty products up front, and then maybe it will be ready. I've never been treated nicely here. Some would say that maybe that's cause I act rude, or snotty or too good, but in reality I review most places in North Beach and pretty much know most of the owners and so I would have to say that it's not my behavior that's lacking cordiality. In the long run, I only go here because it's so close to my apartment. Otherwise, they don't have any customer service, they overprice their merchandise and they tried to stiff me out of some change the other day. The only good thing about their shop is their salad bar, which I find to be fresh on a daily basis. **UPDATE** Today I was actually treated nicely!! I don't know what happened, maybe someone read my review, or woke up with a completely new outlook on life, but whatever it was I'm grateful. They still overprice and they still were rude every single other time I've been there, but today I actually got a 3 minute conversation from the clerk. It's a miracle! read more

The Nature Stop started off as a weekday-lunch alternative to the endless pizza, pasta, and pad thai of North Beach. It's now turned into one of my favorite markets in the city. A few weeks ago, the Nature Stop came through with an item that I'd been searching for at drug stores for weeks: witch hazel. Not only did they carry it, but they had it in solid and liquid-extract form, AND came both scented and unscented. Fresh fruits & veggies, excellent salads and sandwiches, all-natural body & bath goods, and a huge variety of dry bulk snacks and spices. To top it off, the friendly staff can't be beat.
