I've made the mistake of buying ice cream from this market twice. First time, the day after purchasing upon opening to find it was severely freezer burned all the way through, i went to return/exchange. Where I was subsequently accused of running a scam where I pretend I have a damaged pink just so I can swap it out for a new one. Only to find that one is also not edible. Again tonight I bought a pint, yet again, inedible due to freezer burn. This Market is insanely over priced and I've had some extremely rude cashier experiences too. Extremely rude clerk. I wanted to pay with card for something and the price came out to something that I didn't recognize. I said the price isn't correct.. "that's the credit card price, if you don't like it you can go somewhere else" I think he was irritated because I was getting the price down. The energy drinks were on sale for 2 for 6 but he wanted to charge me $9.43 for them. I had to direct him to the sale sign. It's more like you didn't know the inventory in your own store. Or you did know and you didn't want to honor it. He said I was rude for not answering him when asking me cash or card but I had noise cancelling headphones. His rudeness was intentional.. I addressed him on his attitude but his stubbornness and pride took over. Terrible terrible clerk I think he owns the store with his brother so I had a better interaction with.. Just terrible service never coming back again. Sir you gotta understand you work in customer service, this dismissive attitude isn't for for it. Edit : wow just absolutely unbelievable. I lost an earbud so I had to retrace my steps around the neighborhood and I wanted to check the cashier area to see if I dropped it nearby. The man saw me again and kicked me out for leaving this review. Initially he said he didn't care but he was fuming. "leave now or ill call the cops!" You have the right to refuse service to anyone I understand that but I was the person that was overcharged and I wasnt causing a disturbance at all. He proceeded to tell on the phone that I was cursing, yelling, just all flat lies. He said he was going to file a restraining order against me. Go pull up the footage on your store.... The only thing you're going to see is him being the aggressor. We exchanged words outside and he said, "We've been here for 35 years, your review is not going to make a difference."- I assume he's not the only employee at this store, to say this and jeproadize every coworkers livelihood is just abhorrent. As we were a couple feet apart he asked me if I wanted to get closer and fight. A instigation of violence. I told him I am a martial arts practicioner and combat sport athlete and that wouldn't end well for him. "then I'll sue you!" He wants to act like the victim when I was the person that was overcharged. Just laughable. It's so crazy someone that's middle aged and works in customer service doesn't know how to deescalate. Not only that, he's wasting our hard earned tax dollars to call cops for issues that are clearly from his own wrongdoing. Cops should be out there saving lives.... Not coming to console when you're being an immature brat. He's so delusional he said he's gonna file a restraining order against me.... For what? October19, 11:35PM, I asked the Asian cashier if this is on sale. He said that's regular price. He told me to go back to check the sign. He argues and he did NOT believed me. I responded, if you don't want to help me-to show me the sign with correct items, is to ask one of your worker to help me. He was giving me attitude for me to go back there. I am trying to let him know that the sale tag is in a wrong place, and I asked for his helped to show me which item is correct. He is still standing there! Instead of helping me, the customer tried to help me and walked with me, also, fixed the sign. While the cashier followed and watching. They are both in front of me. I am confused because cashier is pointing different wipes from other top shelves that I cannot reach because I am short. I am in hurry, because of him I am late to work. Some cashier point the correct item and grab it for you. His in front of me, I thought he got one to bring to the front. I go to the front- asked me if I want the item. Some places, they honor the wrong sign with wrong items. He did not apologized or honor the mistakes, and continues to give me an attitude. So I left because I am already late! I live a small hotel room near Union Square been looking for Small Family Owned Grocery store that was more the than the usual corner Liquor store disguised as a Grocery Store. Sutter Fine Foods went way beyond my expectations once inside found everything I wanted like going to very small Safeway without the rude arrogant staff that make you feel they are doing you a great favor for helping you I have news for these educated college students this is your job CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I moved into the neighborhood in the beginning of March this year and this little market has everything you need! The workers and owner are super nice and friendly. Very welcoming too! I am writing this review based on a situation that just happened not too long ago. Some creepy guy was standing near the store and was very hesitant and was harassing me to talk to him and "get to know him" and wouldn't leave me alone. I ran inside and kindly told the owner what was happening, told me to stay inside while he went outside to deal with the creepy man. I usually really like this little shop on the corner of Hyde/Sutter. I went in to buy a few things and saw that they were selling boxes of 50 surgical masks (just the standard disposable ones) for $69.99 a box. If you look at the CVS website a box of 50 disposable masks goes for $12.49 (https://www.cvs.com/shop/cvs-health-procedural-face-masks-with-earloops-prodid-310410). You can find prices on Amazon up to $22-25 or so. Clearly this is an example of price gouging. When I was paying for my purchases I asked the cashier why they were overpricing their masks so much. The cashier responded calmly/politely and told me didn't think they were. He also tried to justify their prices based on the fact that they were having customers wear disposable gloves/masks to shop in the store (given for free). Although this is admittedly a nice thing to do, it still does not excuse price gouging. Then, another person working in the store angrily confronted me telling me to "look at the prices on eBay!" and that if that's how I felt I should "pay for my purchases and never come back!" I will gladly never return - that's no problem. @Sutter Fine Foods, in case you were unaware, price gouging during a state of emergency is ILLEGAL in California. Please take a look at the link below from the State of California reviewing the FAQs on Price Gouging. Of note: "California's anti-price gouging statute, Penal Code Section 396, prohibits raising the price of many consumer goods and services by more than 10% after an emergency has been declared." Medical supplies are included in the items that are prohibited from price gouging. I moved into the neighborhood just before the COVID lockdown last March, so Sutter Fine Foods was one of the few places I left my apartment for. It would have been a huge pain in the neck if they were run badly, had a lousy selection or surly staff. Lucky for me and the rest of the neighbors, SFF is a real store, not just an off-brand 7-Eleven. They carry produce and real baked goods along with most of the rest of what I need in sizes that make sense in studio apartment. The owners and the staff are all friendly, too, which is vital when you spend so much time together .AND they're open 7:00 am to Midnight every day. I highly recommend them. I'm not one to review every establishment that I frequent. But I felt inclined to give props to this place. I was Bartending a private party just up the street from this store and we needed a few essentials periodically throughout the night. The gentleman at the register each time was very friendly, polite and helpful. I didn't catch his name but everyone who came into the store seemed to know him. He was pretty tall dark slicked back hair and beard that he and another customer were laughing about saying he was waaaaay unkept. He helped by directing me each time to where I could find various items, Andy even pointed out a sale priced item that I was purchasing. Not annoyed when I changed my mind a couple of times, always difficult to know exactly what guests of other people would like. 4.5: This place is great and I probably shop here 3-4 times per week depending on what I need to cook for that night's dinner. The only thing so far they haven't had that I needed was pine nuts, but I was able to improvise. They have many things recipes call for that I wouldn't expect them to have. And the wine....great wine for a fantastic price! They also always have great produce (perfect red delicious apples). I like to support the 'little guys' when I can and I will continue to shop here for the things I need last minute. read more

The MAJOR complain though is even though there are no smoking signs all along the storefront people will smoke here and the employees do nothing about it! I come to Sutter Fine Foods every once in a while as I live on the same block and always find myself needing to grab something real quick and not wanting to walk up to TJs or CVS. First, this place opens EARLY and closes LATE, so really, if you're drunk, hung over, or just on a weird sleep schedule you can probably always find that it will be open. A nice local bodega with everything from produce, deli meats, milk, dry/canned goods, medicine, home cleaning supplies, snacks, and beer/wine. Whenever I am in a pinch I can always come to Sutter Fine Foods and get exactly what I need. As many local market/corner stores, this spot is a bit over priced for some items as you are paying for convenience. Maybe a dollar or two more for items like milk or frozen pizza than you would pay at the grocery store, but then again, a great deal on beer and wine. Sierra Nevada 6 packs for $7.99 - yup! Also, a fantastic selection of Ritter Sport Candy Bars, if you're into finding what odd combinations this delicious Germany company is putting out. Staff is nice, always some local people chatting outside on the tables drinking coffee and having some food. Bodegas are bodegas, in this part of the city they're on every corner. However some are much better than others. I've gotten a ripped off at several using cash, they'll pad the bill a couple bucks over the sticker price and then start arguing with you if you question the total (which is of course rung up by hand). Welp, they cram a full size grocery store into about 1000 square feet. Good produce, freezer and deli section. Their prices are comically high. Its like $9 for a pack of Oscar Mayer bacon. $5 for a loaf of bread. A bottle of vodka is about double the price of bevmo. But, for what its worth, I can get what I need in the food desert of the Tenderloin, and avoid the walk up to Trader Joes if I have something in the oven. Parchment paper--they have it. On a recent baking binge, I needed to buy parchment paper. First I thought Walgreens would have it. Nope. Since I was on a time crunch and the cookie dough has to sit for an hour before baking, I thought, "crap, I am going to have to walk all the way up to Cala Foods!" I stopped by all the little corner markets on the way to Cala, hoping that one would carry parchment paper and save me some time. Low and behold, Sutter Fine Foods carries it! As someone who just went on a convenience store adventure, let me tell you that this one is pretty damn nice--considering. There appears to be fresh and edible produce, a deli with also what appears to be edible food, and a good sampling of everything else you would find at Cala Foods. I use this place for convenience only, and minimally. Pros: Has essential veggies, milk and decent beer selection. Cons: -Purchased yogurt with expiration dates scratched out - returned these items. -Was charged $0.10 CRV for milk. I looked on http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/BevContainer/Consumers/CashingIn.htm and found out that MILK, wine and spirits are excluded from CRV collection. -Often the yellow zone in front has cones blocking usage. Isn't the point of a yellow to allow cars/people to use it for loading or shopping? Cones defeat the purpose and should not be used to save a spot for employees. This is two very illegal things this place does, that I know about. read more

I live a couple blocks away, this is one of the grocery stores I visit most often. The produce isn't fantastic (Golden Veggie up Polk has better for cheaper) but it'll do for basic produce items. Yes, sometimes there's a little mold on the vegetables, but seriously? Does no one check their produce before buying it? Always check your produce. I haven't found them to overprice items I was buying, and the staff have always been pretty friendly. The alcohol and ice cream selection is nice, and there's half a row of shelves just for condiments and spices across from the deli. It's pretty well organized too, which can be hit or miss among smaller groceries. I've never gotten cash back here or tried the deli, so I can't speak to either of those. read more

This isn't my go-to grocery store and I hardly ever step a foot inside. I picked some bananas, which were priced at $1.29 for a bunch. I thought that was a good deal. When I was at the check-out, the clerk seemed nice but ended charging me $3.10! I hesitated on giving him the money but he quickly demanded that I give him $3.10! (I think he knew it was wrong and decided to take advantage.) I hardly ever carry coins so I gave him four dollars. He handed me back the dollar and insisted that I pay the full price next time. Well, after this experience, there won't be a next time! Stay wary of these crooks! Also, this place does not have "fine foods" as the name suggests. read more
