Ok, so this review is basically just based on the New building itself. I don't go to school here, and I never will- nothing against this school, I'm just over school. The New building is architecturally beautiful. From the intricate, angled designs of the window-fueled exterior, to the multicolored, locker-adorned insides. The building is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold-rated building. Some of the qualifications include an innovative lighting design, a rain catching green roof, and strategically placed sensors that track temperature and adjust accordingly. This building is sure to inspire anyone who comes here; it's almost nice enough to keep me from being truant, if I were to go to school here... read more

Studied at Parsons school of design for MFA fashion design and society. Shitty experience. Shelly Fox and Joff caused severe mental damage to me for their discrimination to students from China. After admitting students from China, they became suspicious of them and refused to trust them. They separated the Chinese students from students of other nationalities and confined only the Chinese students in a classroom for questioning. They acted like prison guards. After that, they disregarded school policy and changed the rules arbitrarily. They were petty tyrants in a small, enclosed space. But times have changed. Although Shelly Fox has retired and Joff has moved on to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design, I will never forget the harm and humiliation they inflicted on me. read more

DONT GO HERE! it's awful. there was a month long strike last semester because the faculty is severely underpaid, the dorms have gotten flooded multiple times, and now there's a gas leak and all residents of the 301 dorm need to get relocated for 1-2 weeks. also the elevators in all the buildings and dorms are constantly broken. this school is incredibly expensive and not worth your money at all. please take my word for it, you will regret going here. read more

I am very disappointed in this college. My daughter dropped a class due to being bullied by a professor. I have yet to find a staff person to file a complaint with. She entered the New School during the early part of the pandemic. She was offered a single dorm room. I tried to find out the cost of the rent, but no one answered my calls. We were back-billed for four students' rent, since it could accommodate four women. This should have been made clear to us from the beginning. The room had no heat and complaints fell on deaf ears from security to the dorm advisor. As others have said, the administration is poor. She hasn't been able to reach her advisor for months. Even the web site is set up so that you can't find a telephone number to speak with someone. We are most likely going to transfer out of this expensive nightmare. read more

I am attending this school and have been working on my MS. Since attending, I have worked on the many injustices I've seen. This school has no organization and the staff complain just as much as the students. In all honesty, for a school that is all about social equality...there is a huge lack of equality and opportunities for the distribution of scholarships. One of the main reasons this school is so in need of money is due to the exhaustion of scholarship distribution, but you have to be in a "particular bracket" to receive any of those directly from the school. Another issue The New School has is uneducated educators teaching students. While in attendance, I was an advocate for disability services and one program offered educational tools and services for teaching assistants, a program that I belive many current and previous "professors" did not take until the year I got there. These so-called professors are hired based on experience opposed to merit and have difficulty navigating a class. The reason why this is such a huge issue is that there are classes that are labeled incorrectly, provide misinformation, and grading then becomes a massive issue based on social navigation opposed to itemized syllabi. Well, to start the advisor I was assigned, Ar Adler is a joke. They speak to you in the most rude sarcastic manner in a way which undermined my questions and concerns, at times even talking over me. So I just don't even bother- I'll go straight to my department head or find the answer myself. Secondly, there seems to be very poor organization from when I was accepted until now. There was a lack of communication between administration as to whether I paid my deposit or not and somehow they couldn't find my payment but eventually I guess they gave up and let me sign up for classes. I also had difficulty getting in touch with financial aid department. When I was able to actually get in touch with the financial aid department- specifically the veterans services office (which is maybe two people?) they did not leave me assured and didn't have answers to my questions. This was concerning but I went ahead anyways because the courses sounded really progressive and interesting. And in any case, I will stick with this school because they offer a BA/MA program so I can get my degrees faster which means cheaper. Now, the real reason for this one star review is because The New School is not paying their part time faculty a fair and decent wage. How absolutely disgusting and disappointing it is that after all these years it has become a profit seeking, heartless, unjust institution. Excuse me but The New School is employed by me and all the other students who attend and I demand that my money go to the faculty I pay to instruct me. Administration definitely is not doing the service I expect and when I found that they get about 60% of the pay that the faculty get paid I was surprised. This is pure greed. The president gets paid almost as much as the president of Harvard University- for what? I hope that after this strike, the president resigns and some restructuring of the university takes place but in the least, I hope that the faculty get what they are demanding which, by the way, isn't even outrageous. read more

My daughter was excited to be accepted to this college and made arrangements with admissions, well in advance, to come and sit in on a class and then do a tour of the school. We flew all the way from San Diego to New York for this. This cost me 2 airfares of $950 each, plus 3 nights of hotel accommodation in New York, which is not cheap. Not to mention the cab fares, etc. And the three days I had to take off work. We were told to be there at 11.30 am. We arrived early and checked in. We were told someone would walk her to the class at 11.30 am. At 11.35 am I had to remind them we were there and they started scrambling to find her a class to sit in on! At 11.45 someone came and walked her the the class she was to sit in on. It was a writing class - she was expecting to sit in on a modern art class, which she had told them by email several times and at check in was her interest. The person who walked her to the class pointed it to her and left. The class was to start at 11.55 am. No-one, not a student or a teacher, showed up and so there she sat in the empty classroom not knowing what to do or where to go. We went back to admissions at 12.15 pm. The guy there kinda apologized and said he could put her in another day, even though he knew we had come all the way from San Diego. I explained this would not be feasible. He then came back and said she can go sit in on a class at 1.55 pm. Except she had a tour of the school scheduled (which they had organized) at 2.00 pm and now she had to choose. She chose the tour. I really think that if they are trying to recruit out of state kids at $65,000 a year tuition and housing, they could be a little more prepared, organized and respectful. The tour itself was OK. The girl was knowledgeable, but very exhausted and had a very soft voice that no-one could hear. read more

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO THIS UNIVERSITY!!!!!! They tried last year to cover up a infectious fungi in the main dorm buildings and did not provide any relief for the students stuck in the dorms. In the summers they will cut the electricity to buildings as to not have a huge bill, so good luck if you are stuck on the 17th floor and have to take the stairs, with no light. I got in trouble in a class for doing a homework assignment called "Opinion Paper" I got called into the Dean's office because the teacher did not like my opinion. All of the administration leaves at 1:30pm or if you are lucky they might stay in till 2 pm. Even though their business hours say they are in till 5 pm, this is a total lie. There are only 3 advisors for a school of 7,000 so good luck getting in touch with them, I have waited longer than 2.5 months to hear back from my advisor. No university should be operating this way. I was also deemed to be a Nazi by fellow students because I am Israeli, the irony there should speak for itself. In the same week I was once again called into the Deans office because I committed a micro-aggression against a student because I said that I do not believe in astrology. This is what you are going to paying for. The schools also has a grading policy of C+ or higher for a class too count towards your degrees, so if you get a 76 it will not count towards your degrees and forced to take the class again. Lastly, the dorms costs are so high that is makes more sense to rent an apartment. At least then you will have people that can help you (311) but at least they pick up the phone and try to help you fix your problem. This university is one of the worst places to send your children, they will not learn anything that they didn't already know and they will be billed by other kids until they either leave or bend to their will. AVOID THIS SCHOOL AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!! YOU WILL BE HAPPIER IN THE LONG RUN AND HAVE A BETTER DEGREE IF YOU DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!! read more

The Irony of The New School The New School prides itself in its history of merging world class scholars several years ago. These individuals often had to fight towards their right to a robust United States education. They held up signs, showed disobedience, and planted firm in their beliefs of social justice. There is the original painting of these leaders from different countries sitting around a table to discuss fascinating topics. What if the rich breeding ground they created was only a stand still in their generational period? The irony of The New School - in its entirety - is the modern social injustice its staff members, students, and academic programs present. My quick profile: Major: (at Eugene Lang College) The Arts with a concentration in theatre. Personality: Open minded, curious. Goal: Form reciprocal, respective friendships and networks. Cons -There will be professors who ask openly about sexual assault and (since the classes heavily focus on class discussion) expect each and every student to express their opinion on it. Mind you, this was an economics class, not a sexual abuse survival group circle. Three female students physically showed how uncomfortable the topic made them feel. One girl shared her personal story in detail as she was shaking back and forth. Another began to grow all teary eyed (that student was me). And the last one made an entire scene by running and screaming "NO!!!!" out of the room and having the professor run out after her. The professor equally comforted the two other students (inviting one for tea and ask the other one to stay after class to talk) but offered no little acknowledgement towards my account of being forced to discuss a topic in detail for a letter grade. Moral of the story: The New School lacks boundaries as they are immensely liberal in every sense of the word. How far are you willing to take your sanity to the next level to pass a non transferrable class? -Non transferrable classes exist here due to the liberal and wishy washy course titles they have in their arsenal. Thank goodness my accounting (Basic Accounting) class transferred, the economics course did not unfortunately. Basically, you will have to start from scratch if you do decide to transfer schools or you will stay in your program of imprisonment. In this case, I went from The New School to a State University of New York (SUNY) college. These classes are often non transferable due to the lack of structure The New School has. You need to understand the premise of courses are based off theory and not logic. There is no "right" or "wrong," literally and metaphorically speaking. -The cost of The New School is not worth the student debt. Period. It is different when the amount you empty out of your pocket is equivalent to what the institution offers. You may run into administrators or professors who argue, "yes, this school is not worth it. Please do not invest here." The financial aid may have you run in laps as to what solution to come with. The different departments: Financial aid, IT, etc. all run based off its own entity, not together. You will hear many different answers and have to guess which information is correct. Example: I tried studying abroad next semester and it took until the fifth travel abroad ambassador tell me that is not applicable to me during this time in my academic journey. Pros -New York City's opportunities of careers, experiences and culture. The New School feeds off of it and doesn't even juggle the idea of offering the bone. New York City breathes life into The New School. It is NEVER the other way around. read more

My daughter was accepted into The New School for the Fall of 2021. We chose the 301 Residence Hall which was brand new, because it advertised a cafeteria in the building, and the other cafeterias for the school were many blocks away (8 to 10 blocks) and other dorms had no cafeterias. The 301 Residence Hall cafeteria was advertised as "an array of exciting new dining concepts. Combining traditional services such as hot bar breakfasts with late afternoon offerings to satisfy cravings, 301 provides an innovative dining experience that redefines food on the go." The cafeteria only provided prepackaged sandwiches, smoothies, packaged sushi (which was suspected of being leftovers from their full service cafeteria at Kerrey Hall) at very limited hours closing at 4pm. There was a refrigerator to pull out these food and drink items. There was no active kitchen preparing meals that she could see, no dining area at all. No dinners, no hot normal breakfasts. Many students got sick to their stomachs after eating the packaged food and so the general thought was that the food was not fresh or sanitary. Thank goodness I only paid for the 1 meal a day plan. Their description was very deceiving. The kitchenette in the dorm suite was very basic and exists in the hallway between the doorways to each individual room. Kitchenette included a small glass-top electric cook area, a microwave and a refrigerator (plus a sink and cupboards). No toasters or other plug in kitchen electronic appliances were allowed. No space in kitchen for eating - only could eat on study desks in room or by sitting on the floor. So, she was always trying to buy in enough food and type of food to be cooked or heated in the microwave or stovetop. When she had classes at Kerrey Hall, she could wait in the huge long line for the regular cafeteria there, however it was a challenge. And after returning to her dorm, it was just too far to travel back to Kerrey Hall for dinner, especially when bad weather arrives. It became obvious that the high price for dorm food was a money maker at the school as they made it hard to have access to normal dorm food but for the Kerrey Hall cafeteria. She finished the semester with hundreds of dining dollars not used. The off campus dining dollars were not accepted at many of the "advertised" restaurants and grocery stores in the area. She has now transferred back to her home state as the education at the New School (besides the lousy dorm situation) was too untraditional even with her liberal views of education. Professors do not provide any consistent grading and grading is not even given out until weeks later if at all. No way to know how one is doing in a class, or any advice/learning on how to write better or have improved academic performance. Attendance in classes is mandatory and many teachers will severely grade down students for only missing a class or two - my daughter had to provide a doctor's note to the prof even while coughing and wheezing right in front of the prof - as if that wasn't proof enough. Reminds one too much of high school in that regard. Must comment though - living in New York was the highlight of her time there. Just the school itself was not what it advertised. read more

This school prides itself of being a free-thinking, progressive place; and is some of the classroom it is. The university, however, is run like a cut-throat business. It is more concerned with profit than with education and routinely cheat its students out of an education and out of thousands of dollars. Eugene Lang College is slowly losing what little credibility it once had and The New School does not deserve any respect in my opinion. There are few real teacher, most are graduate students, which mean the university is making even more money and spending it on fancy renovations to draw in a different genre of student. The student housing and financial aid offices are especially corrupt. Progressive, my behind. I'll be glad to part ways with this awful place. I would expect this treatment from a "traditional" school, but from a school that prides itself on being so student-friendly? Never. read more

This place is quite extensive and can be overwhelming, but if you know what you want, they are excellent at expanding your horizons. I took a class on textile design, as well as writing. Both were excellent. My next foray will be into computers. It is very hands on, and much more useful than anything I took in my undergrad or graduate classes. It isn't cheap, but worth it! Also, the hours are flexible, if you are working full-time. I do find their registration process very tedious, as one yelper I read noted, as well. For a school this sophisticated, they need to get their act together in that department. But I still have to give them 5 stars. read more

How funny is it to review a college on Yelp? So the New School! I spent a few years here and now every month that jerkface Sallie Mae makes me give her most of my paycheck. Yeah, it's crazy expensive. Like CRAZY expensive. Like I can't get my MA until I finish paying off my BA crazy expensive. But was it worth it? Absolutely. Great staff. Great exposure to things that fall in the cracks. This isn't a factory to make people to sit behind desks. You're going to think and do and actually look at and examine the world around you. And you're probably going to bitch a lot about it and feel like you're in therapy at times. It's lacking many of the things you'd find at a bigger school - like a good library, a gym, enough housing... And holy mother of god, I wish they'd get a new President already. read more

I went to New School for just one semester, and have been paying off my student loan for years since. And that was after a scholarship! But though expensive, the experience was absolutely worth it. I was going for a Masters in Media Studies, and I learned more in that one semester, and had more fun learning it, than I had in four years of Bachelor studies. Some of the classes were uniquely structured, and the teachers tried to stimulate us in ways that I hadn't encountered before. The technology was very up-to-date: within two days of the start of the semester, I was mixing a soundtrack on a heavy-duty professional console! Hoping -- this semester--to take a Blues course. More if it runs... HIGHLY INEFFICIENT (OR MISTRAINED/UNTRAINED) REGISTRARS' OFFICE EMPLOYEES AND INEFFECTIVE COMPUTER REGISTRATION. In the past, fine continuing ed courses in everything: have taken art history, Dante, Italian language. Interesting faculty and students, good locations. Its building at 14th and FIfth Avenue has a cafeteria that you can enter without ID, as the guards are lax, and it's good for working in, alone or with others. As for meeting the guy of one's dreams, I've met several predators there. Perhaps things have changed. read more

PISSED!!!!! If it's a FREE event, is that an excuse to be treated like shit? The New School Events coordinator should be FIRED! I was looking forward to the Bird With Strings (Charlie Parker) tribute ON Aug. 23rd, since I saw it listed a couple of weeks ago on NY1's Cable TV Community Events Bulletin Board. I doublechecked the New School website several times to see if there were tickets or reservations or any kind of special instructions for this event. There were none. I showed up early at 7:00pm for a 7:30 show. There was already a long line down the block. The weather wasn't terribly uncomfortable, but no consideration was given to elders or people with bad backs using canes, like myself (I guess I now classify as an elder too). We were made to stand outside for almost 50 minutes being told that the show might start late due to seating a large group. What! I don't know why they didn't admit people as they showed up. Perhaps there was a warmup or dress rehearsal, but some accomodations should have been made. Perhaps if they'd issued tickets, or at the least done a line head count. They could have admitted groups ten at a time and filled in all the seats single file, rather efficiently. Instead they let groups of about 30 go in one group at a time choosing whatever seats they wanted leaving small pocketed gaps in the theater for latter line folks to have to fight or stumble over others to claim. By the time my group was let in, the concert was already in full swing and people were standing in the aisles waiting to be ushered to seats or permitted to claim them. I stood in the back patiently with 20 others waiting to be seated while a scan of the auditorium revealed only about 8 seats left. Disgusted, I left after hearing about 45 seconds of a performance. I'd had enough of the disorder. As I left I promised the staff a poor Yelp! review. And they usherd in about 30 more people with another 100 waiting outside. This sour experience just reminded me why it's rarely worth the effort even to attempt to attend a public event. I couldn't tell you how the performers were, because the organizers spoiled the event for them. read more

I Love the new school because it has excellent computer labs. They always help their customers, and the people are just friendly. The classes it offers are also really good, and you can have all sorts of them. Granted, it's a bit of expensive, but the amount of learning you get is worth it. read more

The New School Dorm. My daughter paid to live in The New School Dorm for this summer while she interned in New York. within the first two weeks of living there she saw a mouse in her room. Upon notifying the building, she was told that it was an epidemic. It took maintenance 3 weeks to even address the problem. When I telephoned the administrator of the dorm I was told, this is New York, rodents are all over. The administrator promised to address the problem that day and yet my daughter was not contacted for 3 days. She is now almost finished with her internship and we want to warn all others, DO NOT LIVE THERE. They are aware that the building has rodents and yet they do not care. This same daughter lived in the NYU housing last summer and had a great experience. I would discourage all not to live in their dorms. read more

Overall, it's a great university. It has an awesome design library but its main library could use some upgrades. Like what Amanda said, each of its 8 schools are pretty well respected in their fields. The school has about 10,000 students so it's not a huge university, but the school is generally more well received by the locals because The New School doesn't swallow up neighborhoods like NYU. read more

This review is strictly about the New School events. They organize a wide range of amazing public lecture series and panel discussions, and they are free. I think many of their events can easily compete with 92nd Street Y and others that charge $$. There are several different locations, most of them are pretty sizable, I never had a problem of getting in. Just check their calendar regularly for updates. read more

I was a student at The New School for one semester in the Journalism and Design program. The curriculum and instruction (not licensed teachers) are subpar. If you are serious about building a career in the field, no matter how enticing it seems, I urge you to look elsewhere. Prior to attending The New School, I went to a state university which offered quality instruction and assignments. TNS does not live up to those standards and the "alternative" class structure that they promote makes it so that there is no wrong answer. Not only is the structure of the classes and curriculum poor, but the cost of the college is so expensive for an undergraduate degree, that without a doubt there are many students who graduate with overwhelming debt and few prospects. This is truly not a not-for-profit school; don't be fooled by the progressive rhetoric (which does not allow for people to have any other opinion but the left agenda), their bamboo theater and DJ class. read more

The New School was a waste of my time , I came as a naive transfer student with scholarships but if it wasn't for that I would never invest in this 60k a year program! I had better education in my community college back home than I ever did at Parsons! The professor are most of the time well off white people who really don't know how to guide people of color . They are stuck up and think they are celebrity professors but most have trash art and don't have true concept of great art. Most have been born in that art world status and I feel this school scams young students by telling us oh you can make it far with the name. You can make it far with the name if you a white student with connections. I felt very disappointed with the education I got as a Latina and during my time there I wished there was more falculty of color . Sarah Hasted is a joke curator and she was my thesis professor that white lady doesn't know art and was the worst choice to have during my final year. I was on the deans list , and I worked so hard to leave my state to come to an institution like this! In return after graduating I still find difficulties in finding a job that matches my profession. I stress to express all this because i hope students considering Parsons read my review and realize Parsons is not what it sounds to be. If you white with connections you will make it but anything else tough luck. The sad reality this school leeches off international students but doesn't really look into having proper staff to guide their diversity! read more

I took a beginners Italian class. It was full of students that said they were beginners but were not in order to get an easy A. Since we moved at the pace of the class, I was always behind. I even went to a tutor, and she told me that the conversations we were learning did not make sense. read more
