Recently, we received an email stating that students are not permitted to enter classrooms before the scheduled class time so that instructors can "prepare the learning environment." However, in reality, many professors arrive exactly at the start time or even after class is supposed to begin. Meanwhile, students are expected to stand in hallways or find somewhere else to go even when we arrive early after work to study. The only alternative spaces are the library or cafeteria, both of which have very limited seating. It feels unreasonable to pay out of pocket for an education and not even be allowed to sit in an empty classroom while waiting. We then received another email about elevator use, which is understandable for accessibility reasons. However, the message stated that misuse could result in parent/guardian contact. This is a school of adults, and many of us are parents ourselves. Including language like that clearly shows how little the administration thinks of its students and reinforces the feeling that we are treated like children rather than responsible adults paying for a professional education. Another major concern is the lack of respect and support from some faculty members. For example, Professor Jayne Kier is extremely unapproachable. Students feel uncomfortable asking questions because responses are often sarcastic, dismissive, or met with long, intimidating stares. There is little guidance provided, yet students are made to feel as though they are wrong for seeking help. This creates a stressful and discouraging learning environment. Lastly, it often feels like students cannot safely voice concerns. When issues are brought up to administration, they are dismissed as complaints rather than taken seriously even though many of us are committed, adult learners who care deeply about our education and future careers. It is incredibly disappointing to be treated this way as paying adult students. We invest our time, energy, and money into this program, yet we are treated as if we are receiving a free service and should simply accept it without question. The tone and treatment are not only disrespectful, they are humiliating.

Take a look at the other top 24 -- NYU is in elite company for academic excellence. It was just that stature that drew me to get my degrees there in the first place. Washington Square is a wonderful, safe, progressive community. It was surrounded by mom & pop eating spots that students could afford and the best vegetarian/vegan food anywhere. My classes were small enough for me to get personalized attention. My graduate advisor, Lloyd Barenblatt, was a star in our field and a caring, brilliant advisor from whom I took continuous inspiration. I will always be indebted to him for seeing my potential as a researcher and scholar. Whenever I needed a break, I could head uptown to all the glorious offerings that Manhattan is famous for. Or, I could spend the day in Bobst Library, to this day, the finest collection of written materials in the United States. Nearby are the historic buildings of lower Manhattan, along with the 9/11 Memorial complex. Just above legendary Greenwich Village which encompasses the NYU campus, sits vibrant new Hudson Yards. You can walk to a panoply of ethnic conclaves from elegant Washington Square. Music, art, fashion, education -- no city on earth offers more than New York, and NYU puts that at the students' disposal, around the clock. Is NYU expensive, is the area limited in terms of housing, yes. But, so are Harvard, Yale, and Stanford in whose company NYU counts itself as a superlative academic bastion of learning. However, affordable housing is just across the river in East Orange, NJ, which is where I spent my first two years. Also, Atlantic Highlands, NJ is just a water-shuttle of about 40 minutes away. I lived there too and finally was awarded housing at 110 Bleecker, with an 18th floor apartment overlooking lower Manhattan. NYU takes care of its graduate students. If I had anywhere to choose for my education, all over again, NYU would be my only choice. Thank you, New York University for all you have done for me.

After admitting students from China, they became suspicious of them and refused to trust them. They separated the Chinese students from students of other nationalities and confined only the Chinese students in a classroom for questioning. They acted like prison guards. After that, they disregarded school policy and changed the rules arbitrarily. They were petty tyrants in a small, enclosed space. But times have changed. Although Shelly Fox has retired and Joff has moved on to teach at the Rhode Island School of Design, I will never forget the harm and humiliation they inflicted on me.

My only hope is that this schools 'reputation' is not ruined by students who cannot perform well enough because the information I receive is especially essential to academics. The science department is great, though I lack the fortitude to compare other science departments of other colleges because of the lack of experience but I accept the challenges of my degree pathway curriculum, that is near the best aspect! Professors know plenty so they can be itchy if they want, but by witness they are fair and have life experience that justifies their standard; "hey recognize I have graduated from a University, or I have obtained a Doctorate, Masters, traveled and/or being involved in government, recognize and know you also can achieve and accomplish and we only want to maintain the integrity because true competition is out there, for sakes, we lived it!". Humility is best, and this school is not discriminative, they are not far liberal either but in respect they are obviously open and diverse, this is a COMMUNITY College. Yass. Go Queens, Go L.I. but you must apply yourself. Speaking for the Sciences you should be able to proceed with other schools and perform with their best. I must attend tutoring but this is due to a very congested daily schedule I handle and I absolutely enjoy it all, even to be challenged which is the best part. I say that is unfortunate because the entire institution is a bit of a scheme. They take every penny they can from you, I had to fight to get some of my pre-reqs transferred over and they wouldn't accept several of them because they said it was not comparable although the descriptions were nearly identical. It is worth mentioning that they recently have started a paradigm shift in administration and protocols, so that gives me hope that things here will improve. Although one of these changes is getting rid of the capstone rotation (ie nurse 1-1 preceptor ship at end of program and the one that really matters the most) and replaced with lab simulations and group clinicals, which I do not approve of but at least I was the last class to get the real preceptorship. Would I gamble it, knowing what I know now, with nearly forty thousand dollars a year? Not likely, but it would be interesting to see if the changes will improve or worsen their standing. The new dean of nursing seems to want to change things for the better, so I cautiously have my hopes up. I can look past that, what I can not look past is the attitude of the administration and staff here (NOT referring to the professors, they are the only saving grace this school has other than being close to an empanada truck and the newly built market across the street). I am referring to the nursing "advisors" who I can not even refer to as not being able to care less about you because that would implicate some level of neutrality or apathy; even worse, in reality several of them have more vitriol toward you than apathy. Not only that, but the only thing they are consistent in is their inconsistency and lack of communication. I don't think I can count high enough to document how many times students would miss a deadline, a class, an event, a registration, a requirement, an-ANTHING because they do not communicate it. They don't tell you what needs to be done, when or how. When you ask them they religiously tell you to ask your colleagues / other students, then when you get misinformation from people who, themselves hearing it by word of mouth, they literally yell at you for not knowing something that is their responsibility to inform you on. I honestly don't get it - they have Blackboard, it seems like it would cut out a lot of the back and forth to just make one CLEAR, COHESIVE and STANDARD schedule of requirements, resources and instructions and post it for all students to have access to. To demonstrate my point, I remember one time I went to them in 1st or 2nd level nursing program about classes because there was some confusion about signing up for odd-number clinical with odd-number lecture sections or something. The advisor saw me reading the schedule on her door -- said nothing. After several minutes of planning my schedule I asked her a question about it and she said "oh those are out of date, they have been for over six months". Then WHY ARE THEY STILL ON YOUR DOOR (facing the hall for every student to see and refer to as an "official" source of information)? Literally every semester there were always, always, always, always several issues with clinical rotations. Either they have not been able to get enough locations signed up so students don't get placed (and thus either get held back or have to watch videos in school of procedures that we are paying 38k/year for hands-on experience), or they don't have enough instructors, or the instructors don't show up and fall off the planet, etc. I think you get the idea, and look I'm not salty. I graduated dual honors cum laude and was in the top 5% of my class but if you're considering LIU nursing I think you should be aware of their past struggles. The only saving grace this university has is the professors, who are the only reason they got the stars they have (if I could rate the professors on Yelp independently I would give them 5 stars). The professors here really truly do care. Several will give you their personal number if you have any problems or questions, or make themselves available to you. Honestly I would have a hard time finding a better group of people and respectable professionals. /END rant
