There's a high bistro table up against the back wall before you head into the second sitting room. Four big plugins right there... yet only one table. Grab it! Also of note, the second sitting room. I hadn't actually ever wandered back there... instead choosing to settle in to the obvious tables in the front room. With the coffee machine going, sometimes it can get a little noisy. The back room, however, much quieter! Albeit some strange artwork on the walls. The choice spot looks to be the lounge chairs up by the window. I didn't do a hunt for power outlets back here. Weeds is still cash only, but the ATM remains in place should you need it. There is also always a steady stream of people coming in and out for their coffee. This is totally a neighbourhood hangout. Oh... and did I mention the apple strudel? I had some about a month back. There was more in the pastry display case today... I refrained, but it was hard. It's at the very least worth mentioning it to you in a review. Nice big slice. Yum. I like Weeds. It's laid back. Nobody's in a rush. So if you are, well... remember they're not. Service is prompt, but the staff are also catching up with the regulars while they work on your order. To be chastised? Nay! To be celebrated. It's part of the charm!

I never would've known about Kwanzaa had it not been for Yelp. It's tucked away in one of the buildings in the hotel strip just off Crowchild and 16th Ave. But I needed a place to park my behind for a couple of hours and so I found myself hunting it down. A couple of rounds around the block and finally, I spotted the name on one of the windows. The lunch special today is a chicken shawarma or a beef donair. Chicken smothered in sauce, pickles, banana peppers, onions and the likes? Oh yes please! Diet, schmiet. A weekend eating poutine wasn't going to deter me from shawarming myself-there are veggies in there! On the coffee shop side of things, they've got your usual lattes, mochas (raspberry looks tasty), some iced coffees and smoothies, as well as a basic array of muffins, squares and cinnamon buns to keep your sweet tooth satisfied. There's no wifi, but you can try and grab a signal from the Best Western. I connected, but couldn't get the internet working. Apparently the space wasn't built with internet in mind, and no easy way for Kwanzaa to grab themselves a portal to the superhighway :(. At any rate, the two ladies there during my stay were super friendly! If only they were open weekends... oh well, I'll just have to make sure I'm driving by the next time I need some more lunch :).

When we brought it back we were simply told they were out of tomatoes and our sandwiches were handed back to us. (A caprese sandwich without a tomato is simply a cheese sandwich). My friend was waiting for her order, which took a very long time. Finally, after we were all done eating, it was ready. The sandwich was set on the counter, and another customer who had ordered way after us took it. When my friend mentioned it, the girl working simply said that the other customer ordered the same thing. We finally got tired of waiting so my friend was offered her money back. When she complained, there was no apology until she asked for one. So impressive.

But our hunger got the best of us, so we ended up stopping in town for lunch across the street from Element Cafe. Our next mission was to get caffeine and a little something sweet to finish off lunch. Element Cafe achieved both of these goals. I ordered an Americano and it did the trick. But I really enjoyed the Birthday Cake cookie. The cookies caught my eye because they looked a lot like the mountains we were about to see in Banff: they had many ridges and depth to them. The guy working in here even offered to heat them up for us before I could ask, so he really understood the keys to our heart. My only piece of feedback would be: when you heat the cookies up, don't be shy! Push that dough to the limit and let your cookies be enjoyed the way God intended: like they just came out of the oven. With that being said, the guy was the picture of a nice Canadian. Don't let his slightly under heating on this day shape how you view him as a fellow human. He was great, as were his cookies and his coffees.
