Good news! I've found the plugins! Well, at least a set of them. I spotted them today when I went to meet a friend for some coffee. There's a high bistro table up against the back wall before you head into the second sitting room. Four big plugins right there... yet only one table. Grab it! Also of note, the second sitting room. I hadn't actually ever wandered back there... instead choosing to settle in to the obvious tables in the front room. With the coffee machine going, sometimes it can get a little noisy. The back room, however, much quieter! Albeit some strange artwork on the walls. The choice spot looks to be the lounge chairs up by the window. I didn't do a hunt for power outlets back here. Weeds is still cash only, but the ATM remains in place should you need it. There is also always a steady stream of people coming in and out for their coffee. This is totally a neighbourhood hangout. Oh... and did I mention the apple strudel? I had some about a month back. There was more in the pastry display case today... I refrained, but it was hard. It's at the very least worth mentioning it to you in a review. Nice big slice. Yum. I like Weeds. It's laid back. Nobody's in a rush. So if you are, well... remember they're not. Service is prompt, but the staff are also catching up with the regulars while they work on your order. To be chastised? Nay! To be celebrated. It's part of the charm! read more

I come here quite often for their mocha, which is fine. Decided to switch it up and try their Chai Latte, bland, bland, bland. Tastes very watered down compared to other coffee shops. Perhaps it's because I'm used to a sweeter version but I can only taste a hint of the chai tea. It's mostly like drinking warm water. However, the staff goes out of their way to accommodate. read more

Okay, I need to downgrade my review a little after having been here a couple more times. Three reasons: 1. It's really hot in here on a warm day. 2. The decaf espresso is consistently bitter (as I had feared it might be, based on my first time here). 3. The music is too loud for any serious reading or study. Weeds isn't a terrible cafe. As much as I liked this cafe's location, food and setting, I've had enough with the owners displaying poor attitude and being outright rude with customers. The "stares of death" and the miserable demeaner of the two guys (whom I understand are the owners) behind the counter have long been a subject of jokes and comments, but the other day, I was with a friend that was coming for the first time to Weeds and he immediately noticed, and told me that he'd rather take his business somewhere else. A cute cozy cafe. The coffee was very good. At times it can be hard to get a table as everyone is working on their laptops. I realize this is a comfortable working spot but there should be time limits rather than one person occupying a table for 2-4 for 2+ hours. Not great business practice. The food is very good but not enough tables for the business to develop a good lunch and dinner crowd. Too bad as they have potential. Needs a business redo. I used to drive by Weeds ALL the time when I was young, full of energy, and used what little spending money I had on alcohol (ahhh, university). Now I'm old, need caffeine to power my work days, and still spend too much on alcohol. So, I rolled into Weeds, a little too stressed out, for a work meeting. Luckily the first item on the menu that caught my attention were the boozy coffees. Automatically a 3 star review because how many non-restaurants will serve you a boozy coffee? Unfortunately, at 10am I'm still the responsible sort, so I passed on the booze in favor of a latte. I was there to conduct business dammit! Beans are 49th Parallel and my latte was smooth. Cozy atmosphere and a little off the beaten track. Food looked tasty but the pesky angel on my shoulder told me not to indulge so I savored the latte and focused on bidness. Bottom line - definitely worth a visit, especially if you're not inclined to be 'responsible' like I was. Cash only though, so plan ahead. read more

Was in the neighbourhood one day and desperately seeking coffee. So my daughter and I stopped in. Parking was challenging and we ended up having to park almost 2 blocks away.....I don't mind walking but only for good coffee ;). We entered the cafe and there were 2 people (together) ahead of us and 1 waiting for a coffee order. Since we were not stopping to eat just grab a cuppa joe I didn't bother to check out the menu board. When we got to order our coffee I found out they are cash only. Yes I am taking points away for this. We live in a technology driven world and there is no reason why any business should not be on board with a debit machine. The little "cash only" signage on their cash register should be larger and more obvious so it's seen before you get to the counter. The cash only sign on their menu board is great for those ordering off the board. I further noted the lack of customer service from the guy taking orders. I was watching him with the 2 ladies ahead of us and he was either in a bad mood or simply not customer service driven. At one point when he should have been pouring a lady coffee as she waited he was more interested in a guy showing him his tattoo. In the end we waited almost 10-15 minutes for my cappuccino to be made. The barista apologized for the wait citing they had a rush. I looked all over and couldn't figure out where the rush was, I must have missed it. The coffee was OK, I've had better, I've had worse. With all the great coffee joints in town I probably won't return, but I do recommend checking it out if you are in the area, have cash on you and are in need of a coffee. read more

The staff... Rude. I have been here a few times recently, on each occasion I've encountered the same thoughtless girl behind the counter. I order a coffee... She takes my money... Then proceeds to walk away or talk with a co worker whilst I am standing there waiting. The staff always looks miserable, never do they greet customers. Am I getting to old? Are hipsters just miserable people and is it "in" right now to be rude to customers. Coffee is ok, over priced to say the least. Cash only? This place clearly needs to be audited by the CRA. read more

Great to have a source for 49th Parallel in the NW. That's the good part. The bad part is that your baristas, including this shop's owner, don't know to grind the beans to order. Absolutely unacceptable. You have some of the best beans on offer in this country and you pre-grind them. That's why the espresso I had the last time I was there, when the owner extolled his coffee knowledge, was stale and, in a word, terrible. Please read this review and please start grinding to order. No excuse for barista malpractice, and pregrinding is one of the very worst things you can do to espresso. read more

Weed's is a quaint little coffee shop perfect for locals or anyone looking to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee or tea. They have all the perks of a cafe but with a couple of added advantages: like a shot of Bailey's with your coffee. The service is quality and so are the drinks. They offer a wide range of food, which is always prepared fresh and brought to your table quickly. Some of the snacks can be a little pricey, but are definitely worth it since they're delicious and filling. This is a very peaceful coffee shop where you can read your book, chat with the locals, or even listen to a poetry reading. It's the perfect place for students to do a little studying or meet some interesting people. They are a little eccentric in that the people who visit there most are a lot of artists, poets, or just indie hipsters. Weed's is a nice break from the regular Starbucks or Second Cup. Unlike a lot of other trendy cafes, the people at Weed's are all extremely nice and very hospitable. The workers recognize and welcome new faces with pleasure. You won't feel out of place at this hip coffee shop. read more

I recently made a trip over to Weeds Cafe and I instantaneously took a trip down memory lane. You see, Weeds is right in the area of where I used to go to high school, and all of us would frequent Weeds at every lunch hour. I was SO happy to see that not much has changed. The coffee shop remains in all its glory and completely untouched by the influences of other major coffee chains in the city. Lindsay K. isn't kidding when she says the service is quality. It's a nice cool place, but they need to be more inclusive to ALL races. I live in the Capitol Hill Community. Everyone deserves the same friendly approach and service. The guy who seemed to be the owner was quite rude for no apparent reason. He has a very mean demeanour about him. Change that attitude and mindset and you will get a loyal customer. I was there few days ago when passing by the area; one of my friends recommended the place to me mentioning they had great coffees; so we just dropped in, got the coffee to go. this place looks like a cozy home, not sure though how fast the Wifi is, or how the customer service looks like; as mentioned on the other reviews, they accept cash only! I ordered my Americano, usual drink, and to be honest if I only rate the coffee, I will give them 4+ stars; it was just the great taste, right temperature, and value was good. Again I cannot rate the customer service or seating comfort but noticed there was a piano on the other side of the seating place and a girl was playing with his dad there; I liked the cozy atmosphere of this place in the first look. read more

I finally made a point of arranging a networking meeting here because I've driven by so many times and wanted to check it out. Honestly, finding street parking was a challenge, as it was for the ladies I met here. It's a busy neighborhood. The cafe feels pretty low key but also feels kind of crowded. Intimate conversations cannot be had here. I didn't eat, my London Fog tasted like any other and you must pay with cash. I had to wait to use the ladies room and I felt that there was no good place to stand. Unfortunately, there was nothing about Weeds that will draw me in for a second time. read more

I meet my pal/biz partner here sometimes for meetings/coffee/work. Tunes are decent but a little loud. The food is ok, there is some vegan, some raw vegan. London Fogs can come with Almond milk. Neat paintings / art...free wifi...parking usually sucks. read more

This place was soooo much better when it was filled with smoke and random board games with "character" everywhere. These days Weeds serves totally unremarkable coffee, is too brightly lit, and has an "empty" feeling. Its as if you're on stage in there because of the lack of intimate spacing. There is no "theme" at all, whether it be the decor or the music. Speaking of music, you are at the mercy of the ipod belonging to the "barista" --- total crapshoot could be anything from trance-dance to world-folk, or spoken word. Wow. Just discovered this cafe yesterday when I was finding places to study after the library closed. I was surprised when I walked in and found some 5-6 people seriously working. The place is quite. Ideal to study and work. I had a hot chocolate and then a coconut cake. Both were decent. Nothing to complain. Would be great in summer as they have outdoor seating. read more

It's true that the staff do not appear to be very friendly. I wasn't offered even a fraction of a smile when the cashier was taking my order and she looked so bored making my latte that I almost felt bad for ordering. I can't understand why anyone would choose to have such a scowl, especially while working in a customer-driven position. But The staff get quite chatty with some people. So, it could just be that this cafe takes a little time to warm up to, so to speak. And the cafe has a great atmosphere. It was about 2pm on a weekday when I visited and almost all the tables were taken up with people working or meeting with friends. Weeds is definitely a neighbourhood meeting spot. I enjoyed a lovely, larger than standard croissant with sliced, roasted almonds, a sprinkling of powdered sugar and a delicious marzipan filling. This is not something I have seen offered at any other cafe I've been to, so I was quite delighted with my treat. read more

I love the vibe at Weeds café! The seating and décor is everything. I agree some of the staff aren't very friendly and that walking in to a sour expression can be fairly upsetting... But, in my experience, 10/12 times I find everyone to be pleasant and helpful :) The coffee and specialty tea selection is GREAT! Weeds is a nice little indie coffee joint on 20th. Definitely lots of character with an artsy flair. The coffee and food is good. Everything is priced decently and on-par with the quality. Lots of community news and nifty events that go on, powered by local musicians and artists. Free wireless. I have a few gripes with Weeds, though, so I don't go as often as I would like to. I've had a few weird experiences there. Once, I was scolded because a friend and I were talking through some sort of poetry reading thing. We were there first, engrossed in conversation for a number of hours in the back corner and it didn't occur to us that there was something "formal" going on. Well, excuse me, Mr. Pretentious. I thought this was a coffee place where I could enjoy a conversation and a few coffees! It was incredibly insulting. The staff are either super sweet/helpful or kinda passive aggressive - there doesn't seem to be consistency there. Of course, I keep trying anyway. Also, if you're going to get some work done, it's not really a comfy place to stay a while. I don't know what's up with the chairs, but they are not for "endurance" sitting. The wireless is reliably slow compared to what I'm used to as well. I'd advise checking what's going on that evening if you've got a heavy workload - there are often bands and other loud events that happen in the evening. It's great if you want to hang out with a friend for a bit, though. So, Weeds gets a mediocre 3 stars. They'll continue to get my business but they aren't my first choice. Oh yeah, and BRING CASH! I thought I would try out Weeds for lunch since I was nearby. The place is pretty roomy but dark. The guy at the counter greeted me. I ordered a bowl of soup, a small latte and a butter tart. They only take cash, which is inconvenient. There is a ATM in case, but now you know, so you can save $1.50. My order cost $10 even. The drinks are around $3.80 for a small. The sandwiches and melts from $5 to $8. They have little snacks, like chips and salsa, as well as a good selection of cookies and other baked goods. Another guy behind the counter dropped a whole box of danishes, I don't think many end up on the floor, but it seemed a bit questionable. The only table open was wiped but dirty. This place could use a big makeover, maybe even just some new chairs to make the place more comfortable. I waited a while for my soup, when it finally came it was piping hot and had some bread with it. It was very good. The latte was good. The tart was definitely from a grocery store. I liked the laid back atmosphere here. Weeds is a quiet place to get a coffee and read a book, but it could be much better. I do agree that it does have a certain je ne sais quoi that I find interesting, its a place to check out. read more

I'm torn on this review, there will definitely be a re-review. Let's go 3.5 stars. I've had tons of friends talk about this place, tons of friends live by this place, and I'm not too far. Meeting a friend for coffee, figured let's check it out. First point, they serve booze. I've always said coffee shops should serve booze. And yay! Someone does. Prices are pretty reasonable, for a green tea and beer was $7.50. Down fall, they only take cash. Which I find super annoying, even though I always carry cash, it's inconvenient, as most people live from their debit cards. So take away a point. Decent size space, we sat in the very back, as it was somewhat full. Weird lay out back there, and no music. Super downer. Especially as sound carries in that room. Overall it was a decent experience, I'm sure I will come back. read more

This is my lowest rating I've ever given an establishment. Two stars! Everything about this place speaks to terrible customer service: from the cash only to the uncomfortable seats to the terrible staff attitude to the wifi kicking you out every hour. I love indie cafes and I really want to like this place but the service is so damn awful every time that it takes me months to get back in there again. It's a pity because they have decent baked goods from Sidewalk Citizen and okay tea from Mighty Leaf. I just can't deal with the attitude. I've met the owner a couple of times and he's the worst of the bunch - rude, bored, and probably the centre of the rotten attitude. Do yourself a favour and stay away. read more

For me, all that matters is the quality of the service and, above all, how great a cafe's coffee is. In this area, Weeds delivers right on the money. I do not need wifi nor lounge sofas, only the best in coffee. I spent a brief period of time sampling cappuccinos and drip coffee and all were excellent with the cap having some of the finest steamed milk to top my drink that I have tried anywhere. The extraction was perfect, neither bitter nor thin. This cafe uses 49th Parallel Roasters coffee beans. Owned by the legendary Piccolo brothers, erstwhile owners of Artigiano before it was sold to Willie Mounzer, they pride themselves in sourcing and roasting the best beans the planet has to offer. Calgary has equals in Phil and Sebastian or Fratello, but they do not eclipse 49th. Although I would not call this my favourite in Calgary, it has absolutely nothing to do with the coffee they serve. I have built friendships and business relationships elsewhere. If you are looking to tantalize your tastebuds with superbe coffee, Weeds is highly recommended. read more

This is a very good little gem. Lots of seating, a wide variety of seating situations too. It's a pretty solid place to come and work for several hours (please patron handsomely, just seems right). Annoyances include cash-only and one dude who works there is a very talented whistler, but does it a ton and it's quite distracting. Anyway, we love Weeds and have for over a decade. read more

I have been here a few times and am consistently underwhelmed. Very mediocre food, service is somewhat unfriendly and slow. They never go out of their way to make the customer feel welcome. Which is a shame, as it is the only independent coffee shop within walking distance of my house and if they were better I would be there every day. read more

I want to give a great review. I really do. But when you serve me a latte with a millimeter of foam on top at a temperature so hot the milk makes a 'blister' on top of my coffee, I just can't. I am sorry I waited to review as I've had many great experiences here. Hopefully this is a one off mistake and I'll be able to update my opinion! This place could be so great, but the service is so impersonal it borders on hostile. It is run by a group of self-satisfied hipsters who treat others with condescension. Nothing special about the coffee or the muffins, I can easily go somewhere else to receive service with a smile. Oh, the building is old and has good atmosphere. I am a fan of this place for a couple of reasons. Best latte's in town, hands down, which is why I gave it a 4/5. And it's hard to find a good latte so I will keep going back; even though the lattes take about 15 minutes and you can only pay with cash, which is a little boggling. I know it costs money to charge debit/credit, but at $5 a latte, let's meet half way. I also really like to work here. The tables are comfy, and the patio is nice in the summer. This place is just really underwhelming and mediocre. Cappuccino and hot chocolate were not hot (almost lukewarm actually) and it tasted like my friend's kid who is in grade 2 could've made it better. I went into the place expecting it to be open till 10pm, but instead the guy behind the counter said that the internet has it wrong and they haven't changed it yet, so had to leave at 9am. That, and them not accepting anything besides cash is a real bummer. There's nothing that bad about the place that makes it horrible, but it can't even be good at being lousy. read more
