Pilgrim Oak High Street Hucknall lets start with Hucknalls…read moremost popular pub right in the middle of the town centre. Opened on july 14th 1998 it was once a fine fare supermarket and several stores after that. Named after a tree which stood at the entrance to Newstead Abbey (about 3 miles from Hucknall) which is the ancestral home of Lord Byron the poet who is buried in Hucknall Parish Church (close to the pub on the market place). It is a JD wetherspoons pub and has a wide range of real ales, wines, ciders and other drinks which are reasonably priced. The pub opens at 8am everyday and does the usual wetherspoons fayre again at reasonable prices (i can personally reccommend the farmhouse breakfast). Children are welcome in the pub if the parents are eating until 9pm. the pub closes at 12 midnight everyday. The pub is quite busy at any time but particularly Friday and Saturday nights from teatime onwards. It also hosts several beer festivals throughout the year. there are tv screens dotted around the pub which usually show sky news but the sound is usually so low you can't hear anything so i can't really see the point. Music is not played and its a very good place for conversation and a good pint. Children are welcome until 6pm. during the day meals are available at reasonable prices up until 8pm. Free wireless internet is available. Admirably there is wheelchair access and a disabled toilet. There are tv's all around the pub which generally show sports or music channels. Friday and saturday nights and bank holidays have dj and disco nights which can get very busy. The usual branded beers are available and a good wine selection. Seating includes leather sofas which are very comfortable. personal view of this pub is that it can be very quiet some nights in the week and very busy on friday and saturday nights when a lot of the younger generation descend on the pub and it has been known for queues to form outside. Never personally tasted the cuisine but it is reasonably priced. personal recommendation is that the pub does a lovely cold pint of stella which goes down very nicely. the toilets are generally very clean but can get messy on friday and saturday nights. Free food on a Sunday for the 1600 kick off for example. It has two large rooms which the bar stretches round to and large screens in each, they have started to serve food which seems popular but I have not tried it so unable to comment. Beers are good but nothing in the line of ales and friendly enough locals. Bearing in mind I watched a West Ham match at the same time as Forest were playing Leeds, I just had some friendly banter with the hordes of red shirted fans as I was the only claret and blue there. This could have been a recipe for disaster in other drinking holes. The negatives I would give about the Moon is that the carpets could do with a damn good clean as you stick to the floors and the loos could do with being renovated too, maybe another review could be put on here for the evenings? All I know is that they have a DJ on but who knows if the atmosphere is more sinister!

No real ales just your standard bitters lagers and a mild but they are reasonably priced. Entertainment includes disco and karaoke fri sat and sun nights, some special events. The pub also has ladies, mens and mixed darts teams. The pub has recently had new hosts who are very friendly and are putting a lot of effort in. The toilets are the biggest problem at the lion, everytime i've visited which is quite often the floors are flooded and the room stinks. if the toilets were put right i'd have given it 3 stars. the patrons are usually friendly but some can overdo the beer a bit to much in my own opinion. Very well placed for transport links (literally seconds away from the Hilltop/Castle Street stop of the Trent Barton Rainbow One) this small pub used to be a bookies or something similar and is now proving a much better service to the community. It is also dog friendly so long as the 50 capacity isn't reached and humans need a place for a beer instead! Further seating is available on the right as you enter the front door and at the rear of the pub plus outside seating. During the day the pub makes a nice refuge from shopping. It does get very busy at the weekends and although there are your usual incidents the pub is very well martialled by the security staff. The music is usually top of the charts stuff and can be very loud. The live groups are usually heavy rock.I've always found the pub enjoyable to be in and Lee is a very good landlord, very approachable. Bar service is very good even when busy. The toilets can get messy but are usually quite clean and presentable when i've been in. All in all a decent pub.
