My partner had cod in a type of stew, the cod was about four inches, and sat on a tiny portion of stew, and that was it, no chips, veg or anything else. Everyone else in our group was dissapointed with the portion sizes as well. The bill was huge, portions diabolical, and we where all still hungry at the end.

Overall though, a nice breakfast spot and somewhere I'd happily return.

This Spoons has a smallish bar area with all new fixtures and fittings giving the place a classy look. Past the bar area is a large seating zone, with a mixture of small and big tables, and booths with their own lighting controls. Fancy! Beer selection is good as expected, I would like to see a few more interesting microbreweries on the taps but it's definitely a step in the right direction. The dessert and a coffee for £2.49 is a perfect pick-me-up at any time of the day or night.

At around six quid for a meal and a pint I can't see what all the griping is about. I've eaten a variety of the daily deals, chicken, curry, beef, and they have all been lovely. So ringing to rearrange always makes me a little nervous (I hate being a pain in the bum). But the conversation I had with the Harts representative was so reassuring that I immediately felt comfortable with my new booking. We were also staying at the hotel that weekend (which I will also review) and had a pre-dinner drink in the bar (which again was fantastic) and was a perfect start to the evening. Arriving at the restaurant (if I'm completely honest) I was a little disappointed with the décor. It reminds me very much of a fine dining establishment in America... which I personally think is quite an old fashioned take on being "modern". But none of that matters when you receive the service and the standard of food that we received that evening. I started with the tuna cerviche. It was garnished well with coriander making the dish light and refreshing. The tuna was absolutely delicious and sometimes I avoid it because it can have a jelly-like texture which I don't enjoy at all. But this was perfect. I then opted for a sirloin main course, and my, oh my, it was one of the tastiest pieces of meat I've ever eaten (and I do love a steak). It was cooked to perfection and exactly as I'd asked for it. Juicy, tender meat served with thrice cooked chips, roasted veggies and a sauce that was sweet and rich. The sauce was actually so yummy that I asked for more so I could dip my chips in it (you can take the girl out of Stoke, but you can't take Stoke out of the girl). We then had a melt in the middle chocolate fondant, with pistachio ice cream. Now this was where the service could have gone terribly, but it didn't. We ordered two desserts and the waiter had misheard us. When one dessert arrived with two spoons, the waiter immediately came to us and apologised profusely. Now I was already stuffed at this point and was ready to cancel the dessert anyway, but the manager then arrived to explain that the dessert was on it's way and would not be added to the bill along with two complimentary glasses of champagne. Now that is service. We were made to feel welcome and looked after in a professional yet friendly way. The little stumble at the end of the meal could have been a disaster in some establishments, but at Harts it just proved that everything is done with grace and expertise. Harts will certainly have my heart for a while.

The restaurant wasn't super busy, but the ambiance was comfortable and despite the fact that we were probably much louder than any other table there it didn't feel like we were disturbing the peace the way it sometimes does in nice restaurants. From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable. Our drinks orders were taken immediately and the service was attentive but not over-bearing. My brother's girlfriend is vegetarian which usually means she has the option of only 1 or 2 dishes on the menu, but Hart's had a separate vegetarian menu they brought for her which had about 10 dishes on it- again a sign of the excellent service. It sucks when vegetarians are treated like second-class citizens and Hart's was quite the opposite. The food itself was excellent. I ordered the game terrine followed by the sea bream from the set menu (they had no problem with my mixing and matching, which is always nice). Both were delicious. I also tasted the mushroom fricassee starter which was great, and the venison for main course which was truly delicious. The only downside was that they had run out of 2 dishes - I assume because it was right after Christmas and they weren't expecting a busy night. Definitely a disappointment, however, when we mentioned that we were really disappointed that there was no calve's liver left because the person who had wanted it had never tried it before, they actually brought out a small taste of the dish for him to try - in addition to his main course and at no charge. Again, another sign of the excellent service. All in all, a great experience and if you want to have a nice dinner with great service, I can recommend no place more highly than Hart's.

Upon our visit yesterday we found The Bank to be a pleasant, JDW type pub (including very similar club days, etc), and the food we had was well presented, tasty and great value for money. Especially the whole(!) grilled chicken peri-peri style with fries, four onion rings and coleslaw for just £ 9.29, which was rather good indeed. My friend had the chicken wings with the hottest-possible glazing, and hot they certainly were! Everything appeared to be on a higher level than JDW. And again like in a Spoon, there was no music playing, which we greatly appreciated. The Bank keeps a minimum of three cask ales ready and fresh, and there's the whole encyclopedia of alcoholic beverages on offer. The menu is expansive, and obviously this is great value for money food. When I'm back to Nottingham I shall certainly return to The Bank. All four of us felt that way.

There are a number of differently sized and shaped rooms, some with one ghost and others have several. There's usually a rocky theme to the music and clientele but that shouldn't put you off if it's not your bag. If you're a CAMRA member don't forget to ask for discount too, I think it's around 30p a pint.

Mind you, the interesting thing was that a number of bikies rocked up when I was here, so yeah, it seems to be a very English thing that one of the oldest pubs ends up being a bikie bar.
