I wish I could give this restaurant a higher review. I have never had supper there and did not enjoy it. There were eight of us and we had a birthday feast for a friend. As a starter we had the chicken corn soup We had the wonderful duck and the cooked to perfection spicey squid. The fry rice with shrimp and a little egg went great with the duck and squid as it did not overpower them. We also has the lion head meatballs - absolutely perfect, and the bird's nest. Finally we had the spicy shrimp and sweet and sour pork. All absolutely fantastic! Chef Ivan is a jem. Six stars to them!! read more

Food is just OK, but worse - prices have become outrageous, especially for the small servings. Small bowl of ginger beef with 5 or 6 pieces - $27 (and one piece was not edible - it was all cartilage). Same for all other individual dishes. A dinner for two - 1 small bowl ginger beef, 1 small bowl chicken and veggies, and small bowl of rice, - over $100 with tax and tip, no drinks. Never going back. read more

With everything hand-and-house made, you'll find no "Canadian Chinese Chicken balls, red sauce or bland paste-filled egg rolls here. Chef Ivan makes 200 egg rolls a week, so when they're gone, they're gone. We were lucky enough to have them last night as part of a culinary feast and they were the best I've ever eaten. His shrimp wontons were mind-blowing and I could have eaten the hot and sour soup all day long. We were st the Orient as part of a group. We gave the chef a budget and let him create the experience for us. Dang! I had such high hopes for The Orient and they were dashed. They have near perfect reviews and are really close. It would be awesome to have a go-to, quality restaurant minutes away. They are on the very busy Bedford Highway. Parking looks tricky as they only have a narrow lot with four spots out front and you practically have to back onto the highway to get out. However, they have a few spots in the larger lot to the right; I'd recommend parking there. I decided to be unoriginal and try some standard fare as it was for me and my little guy. Chicken fried rice, beef and broccoli, and sweet and sour chicken to go. Egg rolls were included but they were out of egg rolls. That struck me as kind of odd as it was around 5pm. They offered to sub spring rolls and I usually like those better anyway, so ok. I had phoned ahead was told to give them 20 minutes. I was about five minutes later than that getting to the place and then waited maybe an additional five minutes for my take out order to be ready. Starting with the spring rolls.They looked a little burnt in places and were dry and overly crispy. I think they were overcooked. My little guy took a bite and wouldn't eat any of his; it was too crunchy. I took one for the team and ate both rolls which wasn't as fun as it sounds. The rice was interesting looking- seasoned with saffron not the standard fare doused in soya sauce. However, the chicken bits were dried from being re-heated as was the rice. The vegetables were fresh in the beef and broccoli and cooked a little on the crisp side of tender-crisp. I'd rather have that than mushy though. Another gripe is that some of the broc pieces were huge; big enough that I had to saw at these green giants with a knife. When I make stir-frys I always try to cut the vegetables to an even size so everything cooks the same rate. Dig? The beef was tender. so I guess 50% of the dish was good. Its sauce was neutral but better than the gravy-like sauce you get at some places. The sweet and sour chicken was probably the highlight: lightly breaded chicken, fresh pineapple and peppers in a sauce that you could tell didn't come pre-made. The containers were pretty stuffed as was I after supper. There is at least another supper or lunch for two. Value-wise, it was a respectable amount of food for $32 (after tax). Overall a better experience than the majority of chinese restaurants in Clayton Park but not as good as I was hoping. I was hungry later on that night (I'm a big boy) and, as awesome as midnight chinese leftovers in the fridge sounds, I passed them over... I don't rush back to the 3-star places but perhaps I need to give the Orient another try. Some of the photos of the dishes here look fantastic. Maybe I'll have better luck with something more inspired off the chef's menu and they'd be more on point. However, this experience was lacking. read more

We have been ordering from the Orient about once a month for the past six months and the food has always been very good .We always order at least 7 dishes . The last time 3 of the plates were not edible .Ordered most expensive beef dish on menu and meat was way overcooked and tough chicken dish was like cardboard and they forgot to season the curry vegetables . When I called to complain and ask if there was a new chef and was putting $55 of their dishes in garbage . I was told the next time 10% would be take off my next order.Have not ordered since. read more

The Orient came highly recommended and it certainly met our expectations. We called ahead and made reservations for 10. They had a large round table that made our visit with family more enjoyable. The waitress was very patient with us as we had many questions before ordering. The meal started with very good egg rolls. They looked a little dark but they were hot and delicious. A typical Canadian egg roll meat flavor that was mingled nicely with flavorful vegetables which made it not typical but fabulous. The rest of the dishes came out one at a time but there wasn't much time in between each one. They were all hot and fresh. The broccoli and beef had a deep almost smoky flavor and the vegtables were cooked just right with some crispiness and no mush. If you like lemon chicken, this dish is for you. Light lemon flavor over lightly battered chicken. The ginger beef had a rich flavor. The sweet and sour sauce for the sweet&sour chicken was made fresh and tasted great. Speaking of fresh each dish was made to order. The vegan people in our group were able to order with ease because no dishes are premade. They were pleased with their options and dishes. They enjoyed the Pad Thai with tofu. The service was very friendly which rounded out the whole great experience! read more

Just moved to Halifax a month ago. Have been to 3 Chinese Restaurants prior to The Orient. This is by far better than the others I've tried. Very tasty, no batter. The best so far. Came again for dinner. This is my go to spot for great Chinese. read more

Excellent flavours! Crappy parking. There is a good mix of Canadian Chinese and exotic Chinese. Aim for the parking lot on the south side of the building. I didn't take stars away for the limited and challenging parking. The food is worth figuring that out. read more

Clean. Friendly service. I had the fried rice noodles with beef. It was very flavorful, fresh and not generic. One can tell that it was made with heart. My only critique would be that it was a little lacking in actual beef, but maybe I'm just a fatty. I polished it off and it was delicious. My wife had the fried tofu in oyster sauce. I'm not big on tofu but she liked it. The egg rolls were delicious and unlike anything I've ever tasted. I guess I've never had authentic Cantonese before. They had kind of a hint of curry to them that was delicious. Good to know they don't buy them frozen at costco or something. The plum sauce was made in house which was also a surprise and something I've rarely seen. It was quite good. Servers were attentive, the restaurant was clean and the chef even came out and greeted patrons and I could tell many of them were return customers. read more

Arrived here for lunch on an overcast Monday I believe in the summer of 2017 to find that it wasn't opened for the day, and finally came back on cloudy Tuesday in November at about 11:30. We seemed to be the first customers of the day. The parking spaces directly out front are four slightly strange spots that is a bit confusing. We took a spot next door at the mortgage company and someone in their car there advised us that we weren't allowed to park there. So then we took one of the four directly in front after realizing that's what they were. lol Then when we got to the door, we saw a sign that there is additional parking to the right side of the restaurant as well. Anyway, we were greeted immediately and took a four-seater booth against the wall on the left side of the room. The whole place is just one square open concept room with basic wooden tables, quite clean and well kept, with the service counter at the back. The blinds on the windows are closed but lots of natural light comes in anyway and creates a warm, but basic feel. Both myself and my friend ordered the dinner for 1 combo (choice of spring roll or egg roll, with beef & broccoli, sweet & sour chicken, chicken fried rice for 12.95). The egg rolls were fresh and had a lot of visible vegetables in them. The meal is presented on a longer, narrow plate and much more visually appealing than your typical Chinese combo. All fresh, flavorful and cooked to perfection. I am not a big eater at lunch so took half home in a doggie bag, but my friend cleaned his plate with ease. I will definitely come back here and try some other dishes soon. read more

The Worst Chinese food ever.....will not recommend going at all! Over price for such a small portion of food

I didn't think I liked Chinese food, finding it greasy and heavy and cloying, which was odd given my love for every other Asian cuisine. The truth is that I was not eating genuine Chinese cuisine. Chef Chan is a gift to this city. I have twice feasted on his Peking Duck, made in the traditional fashion (you must order days in advance), and it was truly exceptional on both occasions. I have also had the pleasure of sampling Chef Chan's Soya Sauce Chicken, Chinese Broccoli, Garlic Green Beans, and Sesame Dough Balls (for desert). His dishes are complex and hearty. It was enough for me to open a yelp account just to let this town know that the new place on the block has the makings of an institution. I will be back for more. Looking forward to crab season. (Nota bene: don't park next door in that awful Press Realty's parking lot, even when they are closed, because they will go out of their way to ticket you!) read more

Amazing food from a passionate chef! Probably the largest, definitely the tastiest egg roll in the city. Lunch specials like the new wonton noodle soup just exceptional! Chilli lime ribs and all of the other ribs I have eaten have a depth of flavour that I have not experienced anywhere else. I usually order a few of the nightly specials. Excellent! Well deserving the five stars. We had the Kimchi Fried Rice, Seasalt and Line Fried Ribs, and the Sweet Chilli and Ginger Chicken. All the dishes were great. Plus the service was super friendly, it was a quiet night so the owner/chef came out to see how we enjoyed our meal--he knew it was going to be a good answer because the plates went back cleaned. We are a bit picky when it comes to eating out so after the first few bits when my husband said " this is the best " I knew we had found a new " go to " eating spot. Fresh ingredients ....nothing artificial ....Just great food that is cooked with care and passion ..parking spots in front but extra ones on side or this place is so worth a little walk !! I tried The Orient yesterday after seeing it on the Bedford highway a few times and I tracked down their menu on Facebook. If you are looking for the traditional Canadian Chinese cuisine (ie. Combo plate with beef and broccoli, sweet and sour chicken and rice) this is probably not the place for you. This is the real deal! I got curry shrimp and hot and sour soup. First off I will say that when I called the woman I spoke with was very pleasant. I asked a couple questions about the dishes and she informed me that the hot and sour soup was big enough to feed 4, and she wasn't lying. You get two bowls which are wrapped in tin foil and then paper bag, which really helped when driving for it not to spill and make a mess like most other places. When I arrived I was greeted by a man in a chefs outfit who was smiling and looked very professional as well as the woman I spoke with. It appeared to be a clean semi modern dining room, and even though the building looks small on the outside they can probably seat quite a few people. A woman came in and asked if they had a high hair and they told her they did so it is family friendly. I paid and got in my car excited as ever to go eat. It smelled amazing. I first tried my curry shrimp and it was great, the sauce was on point, not too spicy but not lacking punch, the shrimp were big and juicy and the vegetables cooked just right. I then opened my hot and sour soup and was pleased with the amount of tofu. Sometimes you go places and only get a couple cubes and the rest is watered down chilli flakes. This is not one of those places! It is real hot and sour soup, not the Americanized version. All in all I really enjoyed this restaurant and I will be back soon to try more of their dishes! read more
