I am going to preface this review by stating I found out about these flaws on moving morning and I had no time to make other moving arrangements. Up until moving day, everyone that I came into contact with was respectful and quick about returning calls. We moved from Chesapeake VA to Onslow County NC last Friday, August 29th. We wanted to save as much in a move as possible so we bought over 100 totes & packed mostly everything ourselves so basically, all we needed moved was our furniture and little things left over that we needed up until day of move. The moving crew showed up between 9-10am reeking of Marijuana. Did I see them smoke it? No, I did not but they all smelled like it so, regardless of who was actually smoking, they were all in the same cab together. Not only did they show up smelling like dope, each time they came back from a break, there was a fresh Marijuana stink. Now, what others do on their time off is their business, but when they've been entrusted to move my things, I would expect them to be sober and unencumbered by the stench of dope. I mean, these folks drove a large moving truck high on grass. Isn't this an OSHA violation? We are not yet unpacked but most of my lamp shades are damaged-bent out of shape, filthy with dirty hand prints and one of them has a gouge all the way through the shade. Some of the frames on my artwork (not fancy stuff but still) have been scratched to the point there is no way to fix them. My shoe closet has a long scratch across the top. Now, I will say, our furniture appears to be undamaged but I also haven't finished unpacking. I would hazard a guess that the damages are less than $1000 & I'll just replace the lamp shades & live with the other damages because they were able to deliver our goods the next day so, that was a plus. Our things smelled like Marijuana when they were delivered but it dissipated as the day went on. I didn't take possession on delivery date, my husband did, because I just couldn't deal with another day of dope stench. I'm waiting on our rep to call me back as they need to know of these safety issues. 2 stars because most of our furniture wasn't damaged and we did get next day delivery but seeing the damage we do have on fragile items, I'm glad we packed (and moved) all of our breakable & expensive items ourselves. Ps, I spoke with Bill the other day & gave him all this info. He said he would address it with their crew. Again, I do not know who was actually smoking the weed as I did not see them do it, only got the after effects. I see on another review someone else talked about someone on their moving crew being under the influence. Brian texted me today to ask about our move. He advised me that action had been taken but again, I told him I did not see who was actually smoking it, just that they all smelled like it & the truck had a lot of smoke in the cab. I feel this is important to note as I do not want to accuse the wrong person. He stated he thought we were happy with the move as my husband didn't mention anything before they left after delivery. My husband thinks everyone should get a pass & would never complain to a business regardless how the service went. That's why I'm the honest, but heavy, truth teller. We do not smoke anything but I am very aware of the smell of Marijuana & I did not imagine it (I am not the only reviewer to mention it either) as it was only myself & the movers. So, the stench didn't just appear. My husband carted 2 lamp shades, both of which are still in the totes i packed them. The damaged shades were all packed & transported by your crew. We did not transport the artwork & it was not damaged prior to moving. As I had informed you, what my husband will not, (he) never has or will do, in the future is complain about service. It is not in his DNA. Yes, he tipped your crew but he tips everyone, regardless of whether it's earned or just ingrained in him to tip everyone. I have been accused of many things but being a liar isn't one of them. Nothing posted here is fictional or untrue. I am very aware of my things & how they appear to myself & others. I would notice one shade out of order from a distance like one 50 yard line to the other. Update August 2024 Trust me, some of the other reviews were not written by real customers, but don't believe me and find out when your belongings are broken and stolen. Military people should avoid, or you will be sorry. I realized when I went to look for my three boxes of 30 Lidoderm topical film 5% needed for pain due to back surgery that they were also in the box of medicines that employees Thomas, Earl and Henry of The Other Moving Company had taken from my belongings. Just these three boxes of patches cost about $850 because they are not over the counter strength. I just found out my Oxycodone and Cymbalta prescriptions were also stolen when the pharmacist contacted me to tell me someone was trying to refill my prescriptions but could not show proper ID or give my birthday. You cannot trust many people you do business in America these days, I found that out. Even businesses such as The Other Moving Company sometimes write their own favorable reviews, so that the customer thinks it is OK to do business with the company. I learned you shouldn't really trust anyone you don't know well because there are a lot people who will take advantage of older persons. This moving company from my experience will create a nightmare, because they damaged my property and stole my much-needed meds. With a lack of an apparent supervisor on site some of the employees of The Other Moving Company constantly told me bad things would happen to my belonging if I didn't give them a nice tip, I guess I should have taken them seriously and watched every move they made. I would have given a tip if the movers had put my heavy items where I wanted them to put them, but now I have heavy items sitting in the dining room and where I don't want them and since I had back surgery, I cannot move them myself. The owner did not respond to my insurance claims against his moving company, but did slander me on this website. After I wrote a negative but truthful review on Yelp after getting no response to my calls to them. The owner called me and told me I was liar about when I posted a review stating my items were stolen and damaged by his employees or contracted help. The Sheriff department and an attorney recommended me to take the company to civil court. The movers while my goods were in their possession opened sealed box of mine labeled medicines and found valuable prescription drug in the box and stole them. Now management will not admit this is what happens even though I saw their employee with my open box of medicines and even commenting what drugs were in the box. Now my name gets slandered just like everyone else who tells the truth about The Other Moving Company on different review sites. I still have the time to file a criminal suit against the movers, but those employees probably are not working for the company anymore. Being a senior citizen, it is probably not worth taking to claims court The Other Moving Company because my health is priceless. Only thing I wonder about is whether the movers used the drugs or sold them for a profit. Most people are afraid to report things stolen by movers they hired, but the reality is most employees of moving companies have criminal records of not just minor misdemeanors. Our experience with TOMCO was stellar. The original estimate was low because I underestimated the quantity of furniture and boxes that required moving. The movie started out great. The movers were friendly and efficient. As the day wore on however they clearly were getting tired, and did not completely empty the house of all items.they did not have the necessary tools to disassemble the refrigerator so it would fit out through the doors, and made arrangements to pick it up and deliver it two days later. When they came to move the refrigerator, they refused to move the other items that they had not moved on the initial day. Also the final bill was approximately $1000 more than the estimate.The lead "discounted" about half of that so the final amount due was still $500 more than the top estimate. Larry was able to pick one of the loads and take it Boston earlier than expected the tricky part, I wasn't there we had to go through the house together over the phone and pull what needed to be delivered. ZERO STARS!!!! NOT RECOMMENDED! I know you are doing like I did and trying to get an idea of which moving company is better by reading reviews. Well, there are good and bad reviews for all the companies, so how do you decide? I chose The Other Moving Company because of 3 things: 1) their prices were comparable, 2) the estimator that came out to look at my house was nice, and 3) they allowed me to pay the entire bill with my credit card at delivery without a deposit or having to get a money order at delivery time. This was important to me. BUT.... This was the worst moving experience I could imagine. My delivery window was June 2 - June 12. The contact person at TOMCO did not contact me, I had to reach out to her to try to get the delivery times several days in a row. The driver wasn't even in the state the day after my stuff was due! So my stuff finally came on the 16th, 4 days late, just after 5 pm, and my beds were missing! Apparently, they were left at the previous stop??? WTF!! So the driver goes back to get them and brings them to me the next day, Saturday morning. Then, the all-important parts box is missing! The driver calls the crew who packed my stuff and they said there wasn't a parts box??? And there was!! I had to dig thru my storage unit and finally found it, not brought to my attention, but hidden inside a trash can??? And since my items were delivered to a storage unit, the company doesn't care and denied my late delivery claim! Of course, because they do not give a crap about any of their customers and treat them very badly! They just want your $9300!!!! We were having the hardwood floors in our living room, dining room and office/bedroom refinished, so we needed to hire a mover to move our furniture into our garage for about 1 week. I called The Other Moving Company and spoke to Brian, and described the situation over the phone. He gave me a ballpark estimate of approximately $450 and we arranged for him to come out and give us a written estimate. When he arrived (without a mask, by the way) he gave us a written estimate for $480.00, which included shrink-wrapping and moving a twin mattress, which was eventually removed, so the price was supposed to be $440.00. We explained (clearly, I believe) the reason for the move; that we were having our floors refinished, and that we were moving the furniture temporarily to the garage, then moving it back out about 1 week later. We decided to accept Brian's proposal, and hired the company to move the furniture. We were given a date that the items would be moved out to the garage, and a date that they would be placed back in the house (10 days later). I was asked to pay after they finished on the first day, which I did, but then I began to wonder why I had paid for the entire move before it was completed. So, I called the company, just to put my mind at ease that we had paid for the entire job. I actually thought I was being ridiculous, calling about this. Well, my fears were validated when I called and was told that the $440 we had paid was only for moving our furniture out to the garage! According to Brian, the job took 2 hours and they had a 4 hour minimum, therefore, we should have known that it was actually going to cost $880 for the move, not $440. Now, keep in mind that I had a written estimate, with the TOTAL ESTIMATE line filled in with $480.00 (including the shrink wrapping of the mattress, which we did not have done). When I spoke to Brian about this, all we did was talk in circles, with me stating repeatedly that we had made it clear to him that we expected the furniture to be taken to the garage, and then brought back in shortly thereafter. I compared it to a move to another home; would you be given two estimates for that, one to load the truck at your old residence, and one to unload at your new one? I don't know, maybe that's the way this company operates! Brian kept comparing the situation to moving your items to a storage facility, where you might be moving the items back yourself, in a "piecemeal" fashion. However, he was well aware that this job involved the total furnishings of three rooms of our home, including a large china cabinet, dining room table, heavy office desk, etc., and we are in our 60s. It was clear that we weren't planning to leave our furniture in the garage for an indefinite period of time. This is obviously a deceptive business practice, and it is beyond me how The Other Moving Company has as many positive reviews online as they do (the reason why I chose them in the first place). The only positive points I can mention are the customer service staff on the phone, and the movers themselves were very professional and pleasant. Maybe they are fine for a regular move, and this is the type of job in which the management perpetrates their deceptive practices. In all fairness, this was part of a government contracted military move, so I have a heart for what may have gone on behind the scenes. We are just the sitting ducks relying on people to do the right thing--which in general they do. Not TOMC. For our prior move in 2020, the moving company out of California had packed our things SO well knowing it was going into storage for 3 months and had a WONDERFUL move. We literally had ONE damaged item (and the packer/truck driver brought it to us, showed us, and apologized). Everything was as wonderful as the day it was packed. TOMC was the company who brought our things from storage to our house in 2020. TOMC was the third bidder to pick up our most recent move (in 2022), and I THINK they thought it would be a maximum weight move and kept using the weight from storage in 2020 as the estimate. I told them over and over again that two daughters had moved out and taken bedrooms, kitchen supplies, and living room pieces, we had taken a 1,200lb safe to a permanent storage location, etc. etc. and that our weight was significantly less. The entire pack/pack out was a mess. They brought 3 people and I think when the lead realized it was a much smaller move, he actually spent the day on the phone and started working another move and kept leaving for an hour or two at a time. I bought them lunches and kept them fed and hydrated (and they sat and shared their life stories). It took them 1.5 days. Then a gap of 3 days before they could find a driver to come load. During those 3 days, I re-packed and re-packed and relabeled boxes (and added air tags). For example, my $500 Ninja Foodie was labeled "anchor hocking". Our cabinet of Yeti tumblers and mugs was labeled "plastic ware". They marked everything on the inventory as terribly damaged, soiled, and broken. They didn't protect anything in the house, and we stopped them when they were throwing things over the bannister railing from the second floor balcony (we stopped them when they leaned over with our 65" TV hanging onto the cardboard handle....tore the box as they tossed it down below and said, "I'm sorry. My bad, dude.") They had told us it was a door to door, and then insisted on taking our things to storage because it was significantly less weight. We told them if it was coming out of the truck multiple times it would all have to be repacked properly. They agreed to bring it later than promised (and agreed to and did leave it sitting on the truck). HOWEVER, it appeared they did everything dishonest in their power to pad the weight. Probably tricks I do not even know about. I have never seen so many blankets--not used to protect anything. Our initial weight was logged as 7,000lbs more than our last move. Then when we complained, they brought it down. You never really know how a move has gone until you are unpacking. Every box honestly leaves my heart hurting and frustrated. They are just things. But, they are our things. A box would have 20 sheets of paper thrown on the bottom (and then no paper in between anything). They used DOUBLE the wardrobe boxes we have ever used (and we are missing two family members). Many boxes had 2-4 items in them, then were empty. They clearly packed in a hurry and to take up space (but taking up space didn't mean taking care). They begged not to wrap totes that I had prepacked in paper and promised no take would touch them (he said he would back strap). Not only did the tape ruin so many totes, they took things out to make more boxes, so the totes were only 1/2 full, and did not fare well. We opened boxes that they had packed boxes in. We opened boxes that were LITERALLY packed with moving blankets. With such a poor pack, the boxes were squished and things inside damaged. For example, our pots and pans and dishes had 20+ pieces of paper on the bottom of a box, then no paper in between glass and porcelain. Pictures/wall hangings were packed 3-4 to a box without any paper in between. Pretty much everything we own now has the kiss of TOMC on it with some type of gouge, scratch, missing pieces to tables, and missing items. They were clearly frustrated. We paid the price. This company was dishonest in so many ways, and this side of malicious. I think they possess the knowledge and skill-so it makes what they did sting even more. You might get lucky with them. Positive: the movers were fantastic - very quick, professional, and experienced. I was really impressed with how efficiently they loaded everything while still being very careful with our furniture. Negative: their original quote was low by about $300, which was frustrating. They charged us for 11 hours of work when the actual move was 8 hours with a 30-minute drive between locations. I called to ask about the discrepancy, and learned that they also charge for the drive from Hayes to the move site, which would have been nice to know as part of the estimate. read more

Dear Mr. Hudgins: Your response is once again a statement of opinion, not fact. Here are the facts: 1) You moved, apparently stored, and delivered our memory foam topped mattress on its side. 2) This handling and storage caused the memory foam to bunch and misshape. The mattress is unusable. (see photo below) 3) Per two separate mattress experts and the Kingsdown Company its self, the mattress is not repairable. 4) We had a lifetime warranty on this mattress which The Other Moving Company voided through its actions. 5) Your attempt to fix the mattress has not returned the mattress to its pre-move condition per my inspection today - far from it. Some surface lumps have been diminished but it is not possible to repair the multiple layers of foam and Kingsdown stated the foam will move, 'rebunch' and lump. 6) Kingsdown also states that through your actions you have likely damaged the fire retardant enclosure in the mattress which is a Federal requirement. Yes, the mattress it not new but you have rendered it useless and offered us nothing - zero. Your policy states you will replace with a similar item or make a cash settlement to pay us (the customer) for the cost of such a replacement. You have done neither and we paid $1,350 for 'Full Value Coverage'. Is this fair treatment of your customers? I stand by my previous warning to anyone considering using The Other moving Company (TOMCO) for moving their household goods. read more

I used this company for an out of state move a while back. I would have left a review sooner but didn't know where to go to do that. I was quoted a significantly different price than what it ended up being. They moved my stuff twice - did a very poor job 'piling' it into their truck from my storage unit. They took it to their location and I paid them to store my things in climate controlled storage. When I'd gotten relocated and closed on my house, I called to receive my items. The price had increased significantly. So I said to wait until I saved more money (all the while sending $ for the storage fees).....each time I called back the price had increased again. Finally I just bit the bullet and put the balance on a credit card. When I received my furniture, several pieces (wood furniture and leather clothing) were covered in mold. Suspecting that it would not have mold on it if in a climate controlled environment, I asked the truck driver about the conditions when he picked it up. He said it was in a large storage area that was very warm and humid....obviously not the climate controlled area I was paying for. I still battle mold returning on those items! So....they misquoted, then held my stuff hostage for more and more money, then lied about the climate control. I confronted them about each thing and they would not back down. Any intelligent person would know that the furniture and clothing should not have gotten moldy in a climate controlled storage area. read more

Recently did a short move from VA. to NC and unfortunately chose The Other Moving Co, (TOMC) Inc to assist in this. Not having a great many possessions, I thought this would be easy, and it should have been but it was not, due to TOMC's carelessness, unprofessional attitude, and general disregard they had for the few things I own. They showed up late, had nothing but negative attitude, and handled my belongings in such a sloppy manner that they caused an excessive amount of damage. One repair service called the damage "malicious" in that it seemed it was done on purpose. They were once again late when delivering my belongings, and of course handled the entire operation with typical TOMC don't care attitude. Once delivered, I found not only a large amount of damage, but many items "missing." A fact they refused to own up to. Speaking of which, when I filed my claim, they dragged their feet in processing it, and of course paid me almost next to nothing in comparison to what was broken & "missing." I would not recommend this company for any kind of move. Though our service from the company's owner started positively, the actual move was terrible. For starters, they showed up 21/2 hours late. Some of the movers were on their phones during the move talking to their attorneys about unpaid child support payments. Secondly, the original estimate was (intentionally?) under estimated though we fully disclosed what was to be moved. The piano being transported was damaged and the company exhibited no professionalism when claim was filed. Though I requested return phone calls, Derek Selph appeared always to be too busy to respond. This company was recommended to us by a professional real estate agent. The problem I would say started when the packing started all the way to then of when I received my stuff in Tennessee. The packers were later (greater than 30mins with no phone call to notify), once there there was only a couple to pack a house that was 5bed/3.5beds, attic, and full 2 car garage and one of the people there had a back spasm so he wasn't doing anything hardly.... and this is where everything gets behind. The packers being late, one person down, and then on top of that they left extremely early without even 1/4 of the house packed. The second day they came, again late with packers/movers that were extremely unprofessional looking and acting. Clothes looked tattered and torn, they talked and made fun of the owner (Brian Hudgins), and complaining about how much work they had to do. The movers on 12/21/18 were making "smartbutt" comments about Brian, and complained about him etc...... which in a customer's eyes makes everything look really bad. Complaining they don't any warning when stuff is a mess, saying he (Brian) always wants this or that done yet he's not out here helping. Then the packers wanted me to give them my keys for them to drive my newer car back to Glouster. After then complaining about having to drive up here over 1 1/2hrs from Glouster and same back....not sounding mean but it's something that comes with the job. As I was packing up the stuff that I will be taking with me as I drive in my other vehicle there.... the movers made me take out all my lightbulbs because they cannot take them; which I do understand. HOWEVER, the expensive sewing light they asked me to take out and I cannot find it laying somewhere so I can only assume they packed it with it in there.... the lightbulb alone for that thing is $39.99 so I hope it doesn't break or break off in there. The overall pack and move out process was supposed to take only 2 days... I took 3 days which put us behind in moving as we were supposed to move before 26th but had to stay because they were not finished. There were a couple times we had to speak to Brian and he had the "I don't care" attitude and was argumentative and "short" with me during both conversations. I sent an email to Diane which who I was told deals with customer complaint, told her at this point with damage to the house done (which I sent her pictures) and lack of customer service and professionalism I should get a discount and wasn't even told "I'm sorry" up to and including today. After the contacting the other moving company in effort to get apologies or even a refund, I contacted North American and this is their response to me. "Given those requirements, a refund or rebate off the transportation rates you have paid is not permissible. However, we do want to extend our apologies for the way this move unfolded for you. It does seem as though The Other Moving Company did not live up to either ours or yours expectations. We strive to offer the best experience and customer service that can be had for all of our customers. As such, I sincerely want to tell you I am sorry for the way you and your husband have been treated. Although, we cannot offer a refund, please know that your file has been updated with the problems you encountered during your move. Also, I will be in contact with the appropriate parties in regards to the issues you have had with your move." Will never use North American or The Other Moving Company. read more

We used the other moving company for our move from Hampton VIRGINIA to Austin Tx. It was not a good process. Most people expect to have a few items broken on every move. What most expect is the mover will work with you to process the claim quickly. That was not the case it took over a year to get paid on our claim and because we didn't keep all of the broken furniture for 7 months so because we didn't we did not get paid. We paid extra for the insurance but got paid only 1/3 of our loss. Both my wife and I are business owners that pay for our employees moving expenses and we put the moving company on our list of movers if our employees choose to use WE WILL NOT PAY FOR THE MOVE. When you hire a moving company, the most important thing by far is that your things are taken away on time, quickly, and professionally, and then later returned to you in the same manner. TOMCO did that for us. The crews on both ends showed up exactly when they said they would, they were pleasant, courteous, hard-working, and careful. Our things were well cared for, handled well, and delivered to our new home in fine shape. Full disclosure: there were two items of damage, one very minor. Also, Brian repaired one item that had been damaged by a different company in a prior move! This is, in my opinion (and I have moved a lot) an excellent record. Well done, TOMCO! The negatives: The office staff seem to be struggling with customer care. I don't know if they're just very overworked, or if they're logistics experts but not customer care experts, or something else. Still, when someone has all your worldly goods, you are naturally nervous, and the office staff did not do a great job of keeping us happy and calm. There were a couple of delays in our cross-country shipment, which should not have been a big deal. However, when the communication starts out poor, and continues to be poor, a delay can start to feel terribly worrying and upsetting. We spent some time being worried and upset while our things were in transit. Brian, the owner, is actively working on his office staffing, and he's taken good care of us in terms of the delays and the minor damage. 4 stars for a fine move, the one missing star is for less than excellent communication. And, just to recap the important point: The actual move was great. The crews were awesome, our things were well taken care of. And that, ultimately, is what you pay for, right? read more

This was a major inter state move at a cost of $12,000. Move went reasonably smooth TOMCO employees were not overly friendly but were efficient. My problem is with the management. The move was completed 6/20/17. I filed a claim for $238.50 for the repair of two chairs in September. I filed the claim with the President of TOMCO on 9/29 a clerk emailed me for a picture of a claim for lost finial. On May 31,2018, I again sent a letter to the President, Bryan Hudgins inquiring if I would get a response to my 2017 letter to him. As of August of 2018 I have heard nothing -- not even the courtesy of a reply. If this company won't respond to several emails and two letters and not spend $200 on good will, I seriously question why one would want to do business with them. read more
