Went to the Outer Sunset market and it was really nice to go outside, socially distance, and have a little farmer's market for the local community. They had fruits, pictures, and some toys that we bought out here. People were really friendly, although it was a little small, it was still good to get out.

What I'm looking at in Sunset Blvd strip has few of the exercise equipments being placed in some cross streets, starting with the first one at Taraval avenue. They're a lot better than being in any gym, which cost at least $20 for a 45-minute workout. Will definitely come back to burn some time and energy during shine days!

It makes me laugh a bit to see signs claiming Irving between 19th & 27th Avenues is the Outer Sunset. The Outer Sunset is so much bigger than that! But there are fun shops and restaurants on that stretch of Irving. And on parts of Noriega. And on Taraval. There are probably so many other streets I'm missing. Oh, well. If it brings people out the the western part of the City below Golden Gate Park, I guess it can't be bad.

    They really have sunsets here.

The weather here can be very cold at night with fog in the morning, but I don't mind that.

But they are not the same thing. The Hidden Garden Steps are located a little further away from Grandview Park (the bottom of the stairway along Kirkham Street) and presents a slightly different theme, the focus of its design more on flowers and plants rather than sealife. It's a unique and beautiful work of art, in good condition (as of January 2026), and located in a nice neighborhood in SF. It's also free to visit with free street parking nearby too. I couldn't find a reason to give it anything less than 5 stars.

The sun was almost down, but I decided to check it out. With 148 steps designed by the same artists as the 16th Avenue steps, this really almost felt like a continuation of the same staircase. The Hidden Garden steps have more of a garden theme, with lots of flowers, bugs, mushrooms, birds, etc. The plants around the steps are similar to those found around the 16th Avenue steps. Succulents are interspersed with California native plants chosen to attract butterflies, including the locally endangered green hairstreak butterfly. My favorite design on the staircase is the snail near the bottom. The shell swirls up several stairs, with patches of mushrooms sprouting from the head. The snail is surrounded by mosaics of California native plants such as hibiscus flowers and buckeye sprouts. The Hidden Garden steps are about 10 years newer than the 16th Avenue steps. In my opinion, the artists improved their skills over time, and, while one flight smaller, these steps are actually more impressive than their sister stairs. The design feels more imaginative and detailed. While the 16th Avenue steps were a bit slippery, the Hidden Garden steps were even more slippery. Because the sun was setting, I really had to watch my step. This must be why the steps are "closed" after dark. Overall, this is such a beautiful community art project, and I'm so glad I happened to stumble across it. My only regret is not having visited earlier so that I could compare the sunset views with the views from a block away.

After being in Washington, D.C., where it was much colder, the warm SF weather felt amazing and made walking around the neighborhood even better. The food was incredible! We tried several different restaurants, and every place had something special, from comforting ramen to fresh sushi. Japantown has such a great mix of authentic flavors, cozy spots, and unique little shops that make the whole experience feel lively and welcoming. Being back in San Francisco, enjoying great food, good weather, and the energy of Super Bowl week, was just an all-around great feeling. I truly believe this is one of the best Japantowns in the country, and I can't wait to come back and explore even more.

Some of the changes I like and some not so much. Parking is hella easy in the underground lot and you can always find a nice gift at any price range as well as a nice snack, drink or meal. I always bring my visitors here when we run out if other stuff to see- but it's hit or miss. My company either loves it and always asked to return, or they think it's a waste of time lol. Like I said, I love it and always will- but I'm not sure how much is pure nostalgia. Recommend visiting at least once. I know the J town in LA feels a lot bigger and I appreciate that one too, but this one is my favorite and I have to show support as a Sansei. Most importantly, restrooms are always clean lol ...

His beet red skin proves he's been under the tanning machine too long, and he's also had some botox injections from what I can tell. But the Doggie Diner Head looks good...all shiny and revitalized especially after the chin lift. He lets me call him DD because we go back...way, way, way back. Doggie Diner was my dining destination of choice when I was six and still full of youthful optimism. Now I'm more cynical...and not six...but my memories of Doggie Diner remain unblemished (...and don't you dare mention the so-called Doggie Diner at AT&T Park...a fraud, I tell ya!). DD would look down upon me with that unique stare of guarded enthusiasm, and I knew the world would be safe. DD has had a rough life. Cholesterol. Chapter 11. He toppled over onto Sloat in 2001 and broke his snout (see archival photos). They reported it was the 45 mph winds, but I know better. It's because he felt suicidal after the diner closed and became the Carousel restaurant. He had no choice but to throw himself into traffic. But he bounced back and went through extensive physical therapy with the guy who trained Oprah but doesn't want anyone to know since she gained all that weight back. Now DD's in fighting trim on the median strip on Sloat at the old entrance of the San Francisco Zoo. Come visit him in all his shiny glory. Bring offerings like a Kibbles n' Bits quiche or a Milk-Bone casserole. Let us praise him as you should.
