And Joe. And proud old men and this loving community that mourns them and their senseless deaths with renamed streets. And the Kaiser hospital, which I really don't like and try to avoid even though it's much closer to me than the brand-spanking-new one in Mission Bay. But mostly paper streets and walkway streets and stair streets and exotically named streets all laid out in a surprisingly confusing grid, but I solved the puzzle and cracked the case, and I know how to pop out right by Blood Centers of the Pacific, but it closed! And that has made me sad for years even though I hadn't donated blood there since 2010, not long before I had my appendix removed. I forgot about the former forlorn Walgreens (RIP, really?) and its promising but surprisingly dangerous little parking lot. And pimple parking even before the neighborhood parking permit went into effect in 2015. Has it really been ten years? There's a straight-up red or black '80s toilet in an apartment here. I know because I saw photos of it when we were looking for a new place to live after the fire. I didn't think I'd live in Anza Vista then, nor do I now. But that toilet? Not quite chef's kiss, but it was amazing in a way I can't explain. And I would gladly write letters to my uncle and my childhood friend's parents, but they wouldn't understand. It has a view of more than Anza Street, which ironically starts right outside the neighborhood's borders. (Anza begins where O'Farrell ends.) Be sure to visit the Orthodox church and St. Joseph's Avenue. It goes all the way through to Geary!

"What's Anza Vista?" we probed with a bit of a Mean Girls sneer. Now keep in mind, we sounded haughty while we ourselves lived in a slightly crappy neighborhood known for providing morning crack deals to some of its denizens and 40-caliber nightly entertainment. It's now Hayes Valley. So it was known as "Anza Vista Heights" (and "Divisadero Depths"). Anza Vista is still a little tattered, sitting right above busy workhorse boulevards of Geary and Divisadero yet boasting real estate as expensive as any around town. Most of Anza Vista has rickety '60s architecture but knockout skyline views.

A cocktail of restaurants, cafes, apartments and art galleries have made this an attractive destination for city folk (and even humble visitors like yours truly). Over the years this place has evolved into the super cool. I love the meat places, saloons and the proximity to the discoveries that remain to be uncovered on nearby Potrero Hill.

This city is very diversified and has loads of restaurants for all taste buds. Being partial to Chinese and Indian food, I have no problem stuffing my face comes lunch time. Traffic is manageable. The roads are well maintained. Parking is seldom an issue (with some exceptions, of course, the shopping centers along Mowry can be a drag). The 2 senior centers, called Age-Well Centers, is a great resource to the elderly residents. The original one is in Lake Elizabeth and the newer one is in South Fremont, near Warm Springs Rd. I am not a senior so cannot access the services, but I have gone to both locations for lunch and liked the food loads. The meals are absolutely delicious and very affordable. And speaking of Lake Elizabeth, it is such an amazing park/recreational area, all-purpose community party central. For those who have been there you know what I am talking about. For those who have not been to Lake Elizabeth, please head over for a look, I am also certain you will love it.

This neighborhood is down the hill from Montclair, and it is rather hilly. Definitely more houses here than apartments, and this is one of nicer neighborhoods in Oakland to live in if you don't want all the hustle and bustle!!

The whole town is unincorporated and we have the awesome sheriff's department watching our backs every day. They are super responsive and helpful (not that we need them very often :) You won't find large chain stores here, which I sometimes hate, but helps lend itself to the charm of this place. You will find some chain and lots of local restaurants as well as the best golf land in the Bay Area! We love our neighbors and the place we call home. It's great for walks as well as checking out some cool holiday decorations in the Halloween and Christmas times. Stop by and enjoy what Castro Valley has to offer!

Shortly after, we encountered lots of street vendors selling hot dogs which is something new (for me). I mean, one or two here and there, I get it. But there were like rows of 10 all selling the same thing--grilled hot dogs. Bizarro! (Edit: My friend reminded me that some of them were selling drinks and they have alcohol. Not judging and I'm not the prohibition police, but Wow, this just continues to surprise!) And then we saw a bunch of people gathered for a labor strike. So maybe they were there to feed them? By this point, my friend was looking for a public bathroom. We found one but it was locked so we continued on towards Pier 39. Mission to find a bathroom aside, it was a great day for a nice walk on this historic path that used to be where all the ships were docked back in the Wild, Wild West Days. A lot of San Francisco was built on top of sand dunes and crumbling rocks, so you can really feel the history here, but the actual walkway is very paved and even so no worries. I used to work nearby and saw some skeletons of buried ships when they had excavation done when a new building goes up, and usually they just document and leave the ship buried and built on top of it. It's pretty cool and definitely part of SF history. And if you don't want to walk or can't, there are a lot of what I would call peddling tuk tuk (pedicab) offering rides for a price. Or you can take the F street car that goes from Market Street all the way down to Pier 39.

In the 70's, when I was in the service, stationed in Sacramento, I often drove down to San…read moreFrancisco for the weekend, staying for about $10 per night in the Montgomery Street Barracks which are set alongside the parade grounds, which have since been converted to The Lodge at the Presidio. I spent many of those days in North Beach, regularly visiting City Lights, where the staff taught me how to choose from amidst the mass of books they offered. RIP founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who managed to squeeze charm and pleasantness into the few minutes we spoke, the one time we met. I'd pick one or two books, then head over to Caffe Trieste, where, in my late teens, I tasted my first espresso and first heard operatic music performed live. I'd spend hours, reading and watching people. Later, when I'd get hungry, I'd walk down to Mario's Cigar Shop for a sandwich, or to Stella Pastry for a sfogliatella or (well, plus) a slice of sacripantina cake. Other times, I'd wander the city, learning about architecture and Chinese food and latter-day hippie culture, but when I was on Columbus Avenue, I stayed put. It was home base, and, for me, a comfort zone.

This city is the next one over from Daly City, but it is just before South San Francisco. True story: when we would cut class, often times, my friends and I would check out the graves at the nearby cemetaries, but first, we'd go to the local corner store and buy a snack or a drink. We'd read the stones and when we saw a young child or baby, we'd be sad. We weren't disrespectful. I think we were just killing time, until we could sneak into a friend's place nearby. My school was called Colma Middle School, but when the principal retired, it was renamed Thomas R. Pollicita Middle School. It was the closest middle school within the district from my home on Edgemar Street (off of Lowell). I'd take the Sam Trans bus there, but I'd catch it near Templeton. Sometimes, I'd get a ride home, I guess that depended on the schedule. I went there for three years.

I work in the essential services, and I sometimes visit customers/ patients who live in or near Colma. When I get to their front door, I can see a cemetery nearby. It's hard to tell if I'm in Daly City, Colma, or South San Francisco. Rest in Peace, God Bless.....
