I think old homes are pretty cool and this was no exception. From the lime Stone Walls, to the proper room division to the sort of interesting hair Art (YEP, I said Hair Art lol) it was fun. The one fact that blew me away was that Thomas Edison himself designed the electrical and lighting plans for the mansion. We saw an Iron that screws into a light socket in order to heat it up. Fascinating. The original furniture was in immaculate condition and you could feel the history. Furniture and decor purchased from the 1905 World Fair in Chicago was intriguing to me. I couldn't imagine moving all that 100+ years ago. The Box Bowling alley in the basement was my favorite. It was in great condition and you get to roll a couple of balls down the lane. Fantastic. The guide was phenomenal and really knew his stuff on the history of the Seelye family. The facts kept you engaged and I really got a feel of how this mansion was way ahead of it's time in the early 1900s. This is a must visit if in the Abilene area. Safe Travels!

I've been through Nebraska City plenty of times over decades but never visited the Arbor Lodge…read moreuntil today. Was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the short drive down from Bellevue. Parking was easy to find close to the lodge. The lady who ran the ticket stand gave us a great history of the lodge and told us about several rooms we might have overlooked otherwise. The rooms all had interesting items in them, all well documented. We especially enjoyed the room with the print press equipment, the room with mannequins wearing vintage dresses (from the waistlines, the ladies wearing them had to be using industrial strength corsets), and the bowling alley in the basement. We walked over to the carriage house and stables, then took a short walk through the grounds. We're glad we took the time to visit.

I did find a plane with Boston roots (101st Tactical Fighter Squadron--The Irish Guard) from "Logan Field" c. 1962. It's scheduled to be repainted to its original markings, complete with shamrock. I also didn't realize Amelia Earhart was born in Kansas. And the irony of putting Rosie the Riveter on a kitchen apron (see the cute gift shop) isn't lost on me! One hangar was like an airplane graveyard, but that was fun too because you could see how the plexiglass on the planes shattered and how the old planes were created with curved wood. They have planes like the ones Snoopy flew and giant helicopters. It don't know my plane and airplane names, but I read some of the information and I know some were used in WWI, WW11, Korea, Vietnam and etc. up until the present day. There was an upstairs level with some airplane art. I would say if you are not very mobile, you will struggle with this place because there is a lot to navigate and if you are not paying attention you could hit your head on any number of things. One of the employees told a mom not to let her kids run under the airplanes becuase they could bonk their heads. True that! One has to pay attention in this museum. My favorite part was walking into this helicopter that was built in 1965 and in service until 1988 and a gentleman who worked in this actual helicopter when it was in service was fixing it up as a volunteer. History right in front of my eyes! It's $7 to get in, a bargain!

It has an amazing history about it. The art throughout it is very impressive! Lester Raymer did almost every medium of art. My favorite "thing" about the museum though was the artist working in the back room, Shin-hee Chin. Shin is an amazing artist! She uses large thread on things like blankets, to create murals. This old school vintage motel has recently been renovated and is meticulously clean with very comfortable beds, bedding, pillows and towels. Very convenient having a microwave and refrigerator; they even provided a gift basket of goodies & snacks to enjoy during our stay. The grounds were clean, organized and very quiet; perfect for a good nights sleep. Best of all they are dog friendly and very reasonably priced. Highly recommend!
