My two stars are for the owner and her mission: just AMAZING! You can feel her warm spirit from miles away----however, this is what hurts thus property: I am in the process of launching a project for child abuse awareness and was very excited about my appointment at the papermill; from what I read on the website, the pricing was great and the space would have been suitable for my needs. However, nothing prepares you for that moment you step off the train to begin your journey towards this property (especially if you're not use to it.) Complete culture shock--an obvious crime and drug area....nonetheless, I made it! The owner was awesome but I couldn't help but notice the stench throughout the place. The space itself has possibilities but in definite need of "the queer eye" . I wish I could work with the owner on just basic upkeep: fresh coats of paint, get some incense, febreeze, candles going, keep the outside of the building swept and smelling nice, make it look tended. I visited this place twice because I believe in making the most out of the least but in all integrity-- I couldn't put potential guests through potential dangers. Again- great heart, great price, awesome owner..but the soul of the place needs a Polish. Note to the owner: I'm not one to just talk: so if you ever need some ideas to make this place the best it can be, help with upkeep, etc don't hesitate to reach out. I spend at least 40 hours a week in the Papermill and I'm constantly inspired by the neighborhood and the artists. Karyn, the manager (or guru), is completely obsessed with having true artists (not "i have a studio" people) fill the space while expanding the community network. The neighborhood has changed dramatically in the three years since the Papermill has opened, and working there makes me feel that I have power to not only affect my personal aesthetic, but to affect a worthy cause: the coalition of the honest, versus the treacherous. read more

The Papermill Loft is a blessing for the Kensington community. This large warehouse has an art gallery and theater space on the 1st floor, and the other 4 floors are studio spaces for artists. It's a safe, friendly environment for artists to collaborate with eachother at an afforable price. Most of the spaces are only a $1 per square foot! Plus the rent includes utilities (i.e. electric, security, wifi). I couldn't be more pleased. read more

Can get discount on studio rental if pay cash directly to the manager Rusland and do not sign a lease. Sometimes tho have to move to another studio if gets legit rented out but still plently of studios are rented via cash only. Good deal in my book. read more

Reached out this morning to learn more about the space. I found the space online and LOVED IT. I wanted to ask a few questions for clarity as well as arrange a tour, I was looking to put down a deposit as early as today. Was directed to speak with a gentleman named Ruslan. This gentleman was by FAR the most rude, prejudice, impatient, unprofessional individual that I have ever seen be placed in charge of dealing with potential and future clients. He is the definition of one bad seed can completely push business away. Rather than ask questions in order to figure out how to best help me, 2 minutes into the conversation he ASSUMED I would be living on the property rather than ask. He proceeded to tell me "You do know that it is not a live in"? I was confused because I was very clear with my intentions for the space as an artist, I also NEVER implied I would be using the space to live. I was completely turned off and insulted. This individual is tasteless and bad for business. I'm sure I was not the the first he's displayed this disgusting behavior with and I'm sure I won't be the last. Good luck. read more

Awesome place for artists to relax and express themselves but it is extremely dusty . If you have allergies like myself this isn't the place for you it's a very old building. The landlord l/ manager or whatever you want to call her is nice but a little sketchy . Also, the neighborhood is horrible. Lots of drug addicts walking about. I walked pass a heroine needle right outside the building. read more
