Hands down, BEST DOG TRAINING SCHOOL EXPERIENCE! I was at my witts end with my rescue dog Tessie. She's a bundle of energy but is super sensitive to leaves, dogs, squirrels, noises, cats, people, bags, rocks, noises, you get the point. We don't have a fenced in yard, so we walk constantly, multiple times a day, and I was beyond frustrated with our dog/owner relationship. Jen and the staff at Pawsitive Dog are the best. We worked slowly through each command to ensure we were doing it correctly and what I love most are in the beginning and end how the instructor talks to each of us about our positives and negatives experiences with our pooch. It's also a great learning tool to hear other owners' experiences with their pet outside of class. Not only have I seen a remarkable difference in Tessie since January 2017 (it's now Oct 2017), and others have noticed a difference, but I've seen a change in our relationship. Pawsitive dog saved us and eased my stress in our walks. Instead of avoiding certain houses and paths for fear of confrontation from other dogs/cats, I purposely take those routes so I can continuously get better at handling Tessie. My review follows that of Amy S. Having worked with a few different trainers post Pawsitive Dog-which I left just about a year ago, I wholeheartedly agree with Amy S. that there is very little "positive" about + Dog's training methods. I was a bit overwhelmed by my dog when we started there and I think + Dog caters to that fear in all of us as owners. My dog isn't aggressive or difficult, just big. And while I was completely ready to drink at the fountain of + Dog knowledge, there were some things that disturbed me from the first evaluation through to the end of our days there-I think the biggest is how the owner would yell "QUIET" at any dog whining or barking in its crate and, mid-sentence, walk over and kick the crate door to "reinforce" the command. Those dogs, mind you, may have spent the better part of 12 + hours in that crate. To me, kicking at the crate door of a dog that is locked inside is dominance and fear based training -and after working with folks that are trained @ Karen Pryor and others who work at the MSPCA, I feel that even more strongly. The same goes for prong collars (for anyone starting training, this is the big "reveal" a few weeks into your training sessions -not quite rocket science, but also something that many positive method trainers shun-as many believe the use sends mixed signals to the relationship you're trying to build with your dog). Again, this is a tool that I think is probably really useful to people whose dogs overwhelm them or are difficult --and when my dog was a giant puppy, it was great for me just to understand that I could be in control--but when I found an effective way of training/communicating with my dog (clicker training for me), I realized the prong collar had been getting in the way of the dog's progress. Once I got over being overwhelmed by my puppy's size, I was very well rewarded by working with some excellent trainers at the MSPCA who are all about clicker training and communicating with your dog --it's kind of amazing -and actually positive! I should note, that while the MSPCA trainers see aggressive and difficult dogs all the time, I've never seen them act towards animals the way I saw happen @ + Dog. To anyone looking for training, good luck with your search -I hope you find the right trainers for you and your dog for a long, happy relationship together! read more

This establishment and business name misrepresents itself. Dogs are kept in cages most of the day and shock collars and choke collars are used on the dogs. I sent my puppy here very briefly. At the end of the day picking him up, he looked sedate and frightened and was misbehaving. It is hard to get direct answers from the owner as to what actually happens during the day. If you do decide to send your dog here, insist on: 1. Observing for the day 2. Knowing the amount of time your dog will spend in a cage 3. Understanding how progress will be tracked on a weekly basis Pawsitive Dog employs two trainers for a multitude of dogs (over 30). The dogs walk on treadmills, not outside. I believe Pawsitive dog, does not promote the positive dog training methodology practiced by other training facilities- facilities with vets and scientists on hand. Pawsitive Dog is extremely overpriced. It claims to have a four months wait list, yet we were able to get in very quickly. I believe the exclusivity factor is a sales technique. For us, love and clear and consistent boundaries make a world of difference. More on that below... At Pawsitive Dog, we were told that our poodle mix puppy was being dominant of us when he raced ahead of us to go outside. In fact, the little guy acts this way because he is excited to play and really needs to pee! The director emphasizes that old theory of dominance- which has been disproven by most leading canine behavioral scientists. We were also told that we should feed our dog AFTER we eat to show him that we are higher up on the hierarchy. I am sure this is doable, if you don't work, have a social life, exercise, o have children. Pawsitive Dog may not be 100% bad, but they should change their name. Pawsitive Dog might be helpful for more aggressive breeds, or for owners who are frustrated and considering giving their pet up. After I left Pawsitive Dog, I learned in having a rescue puppy is much of the "aggressive" behavior fell into four categories 1. Fear 2. Lack of exercise 3. Adjustment periods and normal puppy fears and developments 4. Lack of consistency on our part. Rather than employing a hard edge and discourage the natural warmth and healthy energy, try to broaden your scope of understanding before panicking. If you are a busy professional and do not have the time to train your dog and want this facility to do it for you, there are better resources out there- ask your vet. I recommend reading, "Through a Dog's Eyes" by Jennifer Arnold- featured on PBS, http://www.pbs.org/dogs-eyes/. Jennifer Arnold has spent 20 years working with dogs as part of the Canine Assistants for people with physical disabilities and special needs. Through a Dog's Eyes changed my relationship with my dog. Once I could address his fears, and thought about the world from his perspective, I became a better owner. Compassion knowledge, affection) and learning not to reinforce negative behavior) made a world of difference for us. But if you want to give up and lock your dog up in a cage all day, not only spending a fortune, but entrusting your dog to an institution that will not allow you to observe, provide progress reports, or tell you what is going on on a day to to day basis, go for it You will be selling yourself and your dog short. Your dog wants to please you, is a sensitive creature, and will make positive choices given the opportunity. I believe most dogs can be trained through patience, kindness, appropriate boundaries and encouragement. read more

My pup Spike to say he is a handful, well that is the understatement of the year. We came to The Pawsitive Dog after hearing some really encouraging things, and after just a few short weeks of us attending training classes with Spike we are seeing remarkable changes in him. We attend classes with him every two weeks, and send him to all day training once a week. He is coming along nicely and I can't wait to see how he is at the end of the program. This program may seem a little pricey but is totally worth every penny. I know my dog is good hands when I leave him there for the day, and must get one heck of a work out because when I bring him home he just conks out, and Spike normally has tons of energy. As for the training classes we are learning so much and the staff is available for you to call them during the week with any and all questions. They make sure that you have tons of support and give you tons of encouragement. read more

We gave it a try; $550 for 7 hour long classes. My problems are with the way this business is run as much as the content of the classes. I agree with the concept of mixing SOME positive punishment and negative reinforcement into your training program, so my objection to this class is not ideological. It was advertised as customized training for your dog's specific needs. This was not at all the case. It's a regimented, repetitive group class with 8-10 people per class. Jen promises unlimited phone and email support but she's extremely difficult to get ahold of and as of yet, has never returned an email. The answer to literally any training question you have is to come to more classes. I don't find Jen very open minded nor particularly in tune with a specific dog's behavior. It's all very general. The program clearly has dogs that show great success, but she also has customers who have been paying $75/class for YEARS to get there. I think if *anyone* puts in that kind of time they're going to see quality results, regardless of the efficiency of the program. I can only recommend Jen if your dog is so difficult and your situation is so dire that you're considering giving you dog away. If thats the case, it's worth the $550 to go get your head screwed on a little straighter. If not, buy some books, try a variety of different training progress and STICK WITH IT. Training dogs is easy as long as you have more patience than your dog. Some dogs are just extremely patient and most of us aren't very. Good luck! read more

In 1999 we adopted a rescue dog who was skittish, distracted, hyper and who suffered from previous neglect issues etc.. Poor baby. We signed up for group training at The Pawsitive Dog with Jennifer Vickery (located @ Skipton's Pet Supply). Jennifer is talented, patient and the dogs recognize a leader. In addition to the training classes, we learned valuable skills to take home with us and reinforce between classes. The cost was reasonable and worth every penny. I recommend Jennifer Vickery's Pawsitive Dog for anyone looking for dog obedience classes in the city. We feel so strongly that we are back again. We are scheduled for a complimentary consultation with our daughter's dog, Walter. Walter is a Great Dane, Black Lab, pit-mix who was abandoned, starving & in obvious distress when rescued from the street. I am a local veterinarian looking to find trainers to refer clients to that employ well trained, certified trainers (CCPDT) and use positive training methods (operent condition and behavior modification methods). I called for some additional information and long story short, I do not feel comfortable using or recommending this facility. The person I spoke with on the phone was so incredibly condescending and rude. She laughed at me when I inquired if the trainers were certified and then proceeded to tell me that they are "not the facility for me" because they think all veterinarians do is "euthanize and put dogs on drugs." Hopefully this person is better connecting with the dogs, but if she can not communicate well with their human counterparts then a critical component of the healthy human-animal bond is missing. read more

I wanted to update this review to cover a service that is provided by pawsitive dog, that I recently needed. A general update is that I'm still training my dog here. However, it is no longer because I need to, it is because I want to. Somewhere around the year-year and half mark it really felt like I had a handle on the issues that brought me to pawsitive dog. (This was doing classes twice a month). One of the things that I truly appreciate is the boarding service offered. They call it camp. You're dog goes home with a trainer for overnight, and is at their day school during the day. I had to leave town for a funeral, and when making arrangements for my dogs it was tough. I had many friends offer to watch my dogs, but my dogs have a history of being tricky. My shiba can have bad spells of separation anxiety (RIP window blinds), and Harper has a history of reactiveness. While some might be ok to handle this, what if they can't? What if Mojo breaks out of a crate while I'm gone, What if someone lets a dog approach Harper and a bite occurs? These things could happen, especially to someone who doesn't have dogs that is watching dogs. Just yesterday I was walking and a Chow Chow ran from the park, across 6 lanes of traffic (Rotary at Preble St), and snuck up on us.... anything can happen... The piece of mind that I received from knowing my dogs were in the hands of those whom can handle virtually any situation was invaluable. It is a really nice perk of being a client! read more

Training at The Pawsitive Dog is not for everyone. It's not quick-fix obedience training. Rather, it trains people how to interact with their dogs so that they can enjoy relationships with dogs who are happy, content, well-behaved and trustworthy. But, since people are hard to train, it requires a commitment. I have trained 3 dogs--beginning as puppies--at The Pawsitive Dog for over 10 years. I give The Pawsitive Dog FULL credit for the fact that all of them were/are amazingly well-adjusted; obedient enough that I can take them to virtually anywhere with confidence--and importantly, happy. They absolutely LOVE going to The Pawsitive Dog for classes and Day School--and they LOVE the staff members. The Pawsitive Dog staff is expert and absolutely committed to setting up owners and their dogs for success. They offer innovative solutions to individual dogs' specific challenges. Their training techniques are positive (principally reward driven)--but not coddling. Day School is amazing. If you think that most dogs, left to their own devices, spend their whole day sleeping, The Pawsitive Dog Day School is a big change. The staff is indefatigable. They are constantly giving the dogs different activities--from teaching them to overcome 12 distinct challenges just involved with adapting to a crate (who knew?); to giving them multiple, 1-on-1 short training sessions (dogs don't have long attention spans) focused on specific behaviors; to training them to be quiet and content on dog beds or tethers; to supervising play with appropriate canine companions (not a free-for-all where injuries can occur.) I recommend as many Day School sessions as you can afford. It's worth every penny. Training classes don't work miracles (although the dogs are surprisingly well-behaved in class for the expert Pawsitive Dog staff). But, dog owners certainly learn the fundamentals. It's up to the owners to have enough commitment and discipline to reinforce the training outside the classroom. (I'll admit, I'm a bit of a slacker--but, I try.) Alternatively, if you can afford it, just invest in full-time Dog School, let The Pawsitive Dog staff train your dog--and try your best not to undo all that good work. Your dog will win Obedience Titles. Here are some "human companions" for whom The Pawsitive Dog may not be a good match: People who: * have read a few books, watched a few videos and TiVOed "The Dog Whisperer" and THINK they know everything about dog training * think dogs are small people in fur coats and should be treated the same way humans are * are not willing to make ANY changes in how they interact with their dogs * are not willing to make a commitment to training and lesson reinforcement (aka lazy) * think that their relationship with their dog is a democratic one * expect their dogs to behave perfectly after a handful of classes * want a "quick-fix" obedience training * view their dogs as accessories/part of the furniture Here are some "human companions" for whom The Pawsitive Dog likely is a perfect match: People who: * are open to new ways of interacting with their dogs * understand that training a dog, like the study of the Japanese language, can be a lifelong pursuit (although classes at the Pawsitive Dog do not need to be) * can understand that dogs have a different value system from that of humans * are prepared to assert their role as the leader of the pack * are committed to consistency and reinforcement in helping their dog to learn * understand that loving your dog is different from spoiling your dog * view their dogs are responsible members of the family. read more

What isn't there to love about +dog? From their giant candy bowl, to the outstanding level of commitment, we knew the moment we stepped inside it was the place to be! My partner Jayson and I came to the +dog with our 1.5yo white german shepherd, Lyra. Lyra is sassy, energetic and smart. We definitely had our hands full. The +dog teaches so much more than obidence and how to sit on command. They teach you how to build a better relationship with your dog and give you the skills to do it. +dog has not only fostered our relationship with Lyra but has changed the way I view animals. Jenifer has given us the tools and the confidence to become better dog owners and people. In addition to helping us train Lyra, Jen and Breslin even took the time to answer questions we had about our resuce dog who didn't come to classes. They also have amazing programs that give back to the community like letting you train your foster dog for free! They were able to pinpoint Lyra's aggression and insecurity issues, which was unnerving but they had a constructive solution in Defense with Frances. Frances is fantastic! He's confident, educated and entertaining. Even after a few classes you could see the relief in Lyra's face and in ours! Unfortunatly our time at +dog was cut short due to a cross country move. When hearing about the move, and after shedding a few tears on the inside, Jenifer and Breslin did everything they could to teach us everything we needed to know. First, to be sure, each dog/person situation is different and there is no ONE right way for everyone. However, I can speak for our situation and say that Pawsitive Dog has been an absolute game changer for us. Our terrier was becoming increasingly aggressive and unpredictable in social situations and we were at a loss as what to next, having tried two other very reputable and highly recommended programs with him. Admittedly, we needed just as much if not more training then our dog (and I dare say that is the case 90% of the time), the challenge was finding someone that offered that type of program. Jen and Breslin (Francis too!) are amazing and all bring unique strengths to the training process. They work with YOU and your dog through interactive classes. At first we were skeptical of some of the techniques, but by giving it a chance have seen the great results. The baby steps we worked on early on have given us a strong foundation for the more advanced training we are currently learning. Day School was integral to our progress. Our dog already loved his crate at home, so we were absolutely fine with him being in one at +dog Day School. His crate is his safe place that he goes to when he is unsure or just wants to relax. We have seen the complex rotation that Jen and Breslin use (the white board!) to ensure everyone gets equal opportunity to be out on the floor, on a bed, in the crate or on the treadmill (which, by the way, I'll remind you all we use for our exercise as well!) I will be the first to admit this is not the most economical option, and perhaps is not the best fit for you if all you want out of it is your dog to be potty trained and to sit on command. This is an investment you are making and have to commit to. My husband and I have learned (and are continuing to learn) how to change our behavior and make a renewed commitment to our dog's well-being, which is in turn improving our overall relationship with him (and each other now that we aren't as stressed out about him!). Friends and family cannot believe the difference in our dog, and are much more comfortable around him. +dog gave us hope that we could have a well-behaved dog afterall, and they are teaching us how to be "well-behaved" parents too! read more

Absolutely AMAZING dog training facility and staff. Jen, Breslin, Francis and team are wonderful. All of the staff are completely committed to what they do. Initial evaluation is intimidating because we weren't sure what to expect, but the improvements we've seen in our dog are astounding!!! Gunner looks forward to going to school every time we show up. I can't think of a better place or more impressive staff to care for our bichon-cocker cross. Jen and Breslin have been incredibly supportive since we began with the Pawsitive Dog over two years ago. We continue to return almost daily to +dog (camp, school, and class) because of the quality of the staff, the friendly classmates (human and canine), and most importantly, because Harley loves it! Thanks to +dog, our slightly rambunctious, high energy, and very smart pooch, has become the brilliant, snuggly, and loving family member we knew he could be. Without the +dog, we would not have been able to manage work, gradschool and dog care. Instead of being cooped up at home or getting short multidog walks, Harley has spent the last two years learning skills we never thought possible, and romping on the farm with with the trainers during camp +dog. Everyone that knew Harley before we started with the +dog, comments on what a happy, confident, and well-mannered dog he has grown into, and how well we work together. Before finding the +dog, I met with several other "trainers" in the Boston area who suggested growling and spraying the dog to "put him in his place" - they only led to fear and aggression. We also tried the roam free "play time" places - the result was a hyper, crazed dog who was afraid of his own shadow. The +dog, is neither of these places. It is the place where our pack has blossomed. Just like many comments I've seen here, we were nervous after our first class and never thought we'd still be training two years later. But, I promise it is all worthwhile, when you can do things as a family, you never imagined possible. read more

I met Jen in 2005 when I rescued a Pug and he was fear aggressive. I had not a clue what to do and from the moment I met Jen and crew, she was a life saver. It was our first time learning how to deal with this type of dog. We learned for the first time how to crate train, how to get the dog to pee on command, how to walk, how to discipline and my list goes on. Moving forward, I lost my dog to heart-worm, but who understood how horrible I felt and who gave me that hug and pep talk - that was Jen and her team. Moving forward we went on to a Boxer puppy and what a HUGE difference that was! First person I called was +dog. Sophie was 5 months old when she met Jen and she is now 6 years old. We again, learned how to own a puppy, we learned rules/boundaries, socialization, how to walk on and off leash, and yes...... we did feed her AFTER we ate. And YES - we do have a social life. Its a life change. What did we learn from having Jen in our life? When we started fostering Boxers and we fostered a 10 month old boxer who was out of control, had no boundaries, no limitations, no socialization, was not crate trained, dog aggressive, and the list the goes on. We learned we had not a clue how much we learned from Jen and her team. +dog allowed us to bring our foster to training for FREE while bringing Sophie. She offered to help other fosters in our group with questions, etc... Only Jen, Breslin, Francis, Sophie, me and Mike know what hoops we went through to get Bruschi an awesome home. He would have been for sure put to sleep with his issues, but they helped us work through and create an awesome dog that now is with an even awesomer boxer family ;o) Try getting that service with a PetSmart/PetCo training. Six years later, we are in a different state, so not in training, but who did we see when we got married last year? Stopped by to see Jen to let her see Sophie and tell her she was our flower girl in our wedding. She kicked butt at the Boston Public Gardens! Our trolley driver fell in love with her and the ONLY reason she was allowed on board was because she was sooo well trained. Yes, that was is and was our doing, but we a lot of help. There is not a day that goes by we don't get asked how do I get my dog to be so well behaved as your dog. I tell them where we went to training and when we move back to Boston this year, our first call will be to Jen and get back to training with Sophie. She misses her friends, and we miss our friends too ;o) Get your dog and yourself to +dog - it's THE BEST!! read more

I do not think this should be anyone's first choice for dog training. About 1 year ago I adopted an extremely hyperactive 1.5 year old pup. This was my first time owning a dog and I wanted to do things right. He came from a hoarding case and then was adopted out to a family who couldn't handle him and brought him back to the shelter. I found The Pawsitive Dog and read all of the flawless reviews. Knowing my new best friend was going to be a handful and that I was an inexperienced owner I felt I just HAD to go here and did not bother looking into other trainers. As a previous review mentioned the name "Pawsitive" dog is misleading. They use physical punishment, have you force your dog into a sit or down, use leash pops, prong collars, and shock collars. Sadly I bought into this. It certainly did not strengthen my bond with my dog, it made it worse. These methods may work for some breeds or some dogs (no doubt they have trained many well behaved dogs, you see a lot of the dogs that are there for "day school" while you are at class) but I don't think this method is well suited for all dogs. As an example I would say not every child needs to be sent to military school to learn how to be well behaved, there are kinder methods. I finished the 7 classes that I paid nearly $600 dollars for and decided it was going no where. Although my dog is hyper and rambunctious and was absolutely driving me nuts with his chewing, nipping, and jumping I could no longer put him through this type of training. After a few months I moved out of Boston and enrolled in a positive based training course that used cliker training. My dog is doing incredibly well, no longer chews, nips, or jumps and I have come to appreciate how incredibly intelligent he is. Bottom line is that you have to know your dog and know your breed. I believe certain breeds that were bred to serve and work very closely with their owners will do fine here (German Shepherd, Labs, pits...etc) beware if you have a breed that is described as being sensitive (such as many of the sighthounds). In the long run I wish I had not believed this was my only option and gone somewhere much cheaper to start with. My dog is great, happy, and confident now...especially after I threw out that stupid prong collar. read more

Pawsitive Dog is amazing! We started taking classes with Jen when our dog was only 5 months old and we're so glad we did. We have a rescue dog who was neutered way too early and is at baseline pretty skittish. I can't imagine how we would be able to handle him without our training from Pawsitive Dog. Living in the city with a 50lb extremely active dog is challenging, but we've learned great strategies for keeping him happy and stimulated (without spending a ridiculous amount of money on doggie daycare or driving ourselves crazy trying to spend enough time with him outside). Pawsitive Dog is also a lot of fun. Going to class became a highlight of our week. The other owners and dogs are amazing - we always have something to aspire to or another goal to reach. They really want you to have the best relationship you can with your dog, while at the same time helping you to make sure that your dog is always in a safe situation (or if not, how to handle it). The Pawsitive Dog is amazing! I have owned 3 dogs and I have learned so much about how to train a dog and ensure they are a great, fun companion! Jenifer and Breslin are amazing. My dog also boards with them. They take her hiking and she always comes home exhausted. The day school is great too - the dogs get exercise, but also receive training while they are there. The best of both worlds! They are also always available to answer questions about my dog. I first met Jenifer at The Pawsitive Dog in 1999 with my 1 1/2 year old "exuberant" black labrador. I found The Pawsitive Dog after attending classes with 3 other trainers who could go through the steps but never achieved the results I was looking for. It is through Jenifer's approach of a relationship built on trust and clear direction which makes the training so successful. In addition, it is her keen eye and approach on training "city dogs" which is invaluable. Dogs which reside in the city have a much harder time than their friends in the suburbs. They are required to pass numerous distractions every time they leave their homes; constant construction, noises outside their homes, dogs of varying degrees of size and temperment, children running up on them, food on the street, eliminating in appropriate places, etc. It is through the hours of training, field trips, day school, and study halls which allows for success. I would love my dog whether or not I found Jenifer but no doubt I wouldn't enjoy him as much as I do. I am able to travel with him by car, boat, or plane (in the seat next to me....not in a crate in the cargo section) and know that he will be stable, confident, and relaxed and as a result, he has had a better life with more life experiences than most dogs I know. There was never a question that I would train with Jenifer again when I got my new puppy. My 4 month old and I have entered into beginner obedience. All of the lessons I learned the first time around have made the puppy training so much easier and I am able to spot potential problems before they become a problem. Puppy is on the fast track to becoming a fabulous dog! I could have easily purchased a couple of books or watched a couple of videos or television programs, and thought my dog was trained; however, having been through training, I know how a stable, well-trained dog behaves. Her time, expertise, insight, suggestions, and invaluable experience make every penny of the tuition worth it. You won't regret classes with Jenifer.....it will be the best money you ever spend!!!! read more

We brought our deaf dog to Pawsitive Dog for over a year and a half. While our dog did gain noticeable confidence around people, thanks to the controlled environment Pawsitive Dog provided, most other issues persisted despite our dedication inside and out of the classroom. One of his biggest problem areas - fear of walking outside - actually worsened despite our dedication to the Pawsitive Dog training. Feeling frustrated we decided to do our own research and found that much of what we were learning was based on out-dated science and a bit too one-size-fits-all. This led us elsewhere for help. We decided to see another trainer with a positive reinforcement approach rooted in current behavioral science. Within two visits we learned that one of the things we had been taught at the Pawsitive Dog - to desensitize him to being outside by having him outside all of the time, feeding him outside, etc ("flooding") - was actually solidifying our dog's fears and rapidly dissolving his trust in us. We threw out the pinch-collar Pawsitive Dog had strongly suggested everyone use (admittedly, we were never that comfortable with in the first place) and went with the new trainers suggestions. After less than a month with the new trainer our dog was actually able to go on night time walks with much less anxiety. He was (literally) stopping to smell the flowers! It was an amazing breakthrough. He is even able to tolerate people walking across the street from him now. Leaving Pawsitive Dog and switching to training methods based in up-to-date behavioral science has helped our dog and our relationship with our dog. While the approaches used at Pawsitive Dog may work for some, I truly hope Pawsitive Dog has updated their methodology since we left their program. read more

We have 2 pit bull mixes - Gizmo and Scarlet. We've adopted Gizmo when he was 6 months old. Knowing that he was a pit bull, we did our best to socialize him and complete several series of obedience classes. He was great with his commands. However, as he got older he started to develop some dog/cat aggression and was subsequently kicked out of play groups. We started to worry that his behavior could cause him to become a liability to both himself and others. Furthermore, his behavior was affecting Scarlet. When they would see dogs while on walks, they would go into a barking frenzy. Needless to say, it was embaressing to walk them around our neighborhood and we were certainly not helping the pit bull reputation, which has always been so important to us. Scarlet, on the other hand, can be a bit nervous. We weren't sure of her history since we got her when she was a few years old. She was wary of loud noises and unusual objects. When she got scared she would try to flee and cower - somtimes for hours. It was painful for us to see her like that and not know how to console her or avoid even letting her get into that state. Knowing these issues and realizing that our current tools and knowledge weren't enough, we sought out to find the best trainer in Boston. Our search led us to Jen & Pawsitive Dog. We have been going here now for the past 3-4 months and the results have been remarkable. We take part in classes and Day School. Walks now are great! We no longer avoid dogs by darting down a different road or hiding behind a car. Instead, dogs = training opportunities! Let's walk behind them and make sure we have our dog's attention. Scarlet is much happier now that she isn't so nervous. Day school obviously exposes her to many dogs, sights, and sounds to she can be better adjusted and adaptable. For Gizmo, our relationship has become much stronger. We realized that he needed us to better lead him - show/tell him how to behave instead of allowing him to make bad decisions on his own. We still have work to do, but knowing that we can partner with Jen and the rest of the Pawsitive Dog team gives us great hope and comfort for the future! The entire staff at Pawsitive Dog is amazing. Jen is extremely knowledgeable and she is great at conveying her knowledge to us in an easy to understand and fun way. Classes are often filled with laughter, and we are completely comfortable to ask any questions we may have. She also has an open phone policy to call with any questions you may have. We called her once in the beginning of our training to ask if we handled a situation correctly and she got back to us right away. The instant feedback is so helpful in making sure we continue on the right path in between classes. Our dogs love seeing Breslin when they get dropped off for day school. She often shares tidbits of information in the few minutes we have with her in the AM. She also makes herself available during the day - something my husband has taken advantage of several times. Even the interns (trainers in training) are great! Ian and Renee are very knowledgeable and we love watching them work with our dogs! Lastly, we have had the opportunity to work with Francis in Doggie Defense and while we were on the waitlist for Pawsitive Dog. Francis is awesome! He knows his stuff - after all, he trains police dogs. He has been instrumental in helping us understand how to handle and control Gizmo's aggression. Our only regret is not starting with Pawsitive Dog before our issues had the opportunity to get as serious as they did. We love Pawsitive Dog mostly because of how much Gizmo and Scarlet love it. Our dogs are now happier and emotionally healthier and we thank Pawsitive Dog for that! read more

Radar, Pinky and I were dismayed that Amy "PR Gal" S, had a disappointing experience at the Pawsitive Dog. Based upon our seven years experience with PD and what we have learned from them about dog (and owner) training, we find some of Amy's points misleading, inflammatory, and ultimately, poor "PR" for her. Thus, we felt the need to "speak." We have been training at the Pawsitive Dog since 2005 [formal classes, study halls, guest lectures, field trips] and cannot imagine training anywhere else. I haven't had this much fun in school since kindergarten! People always complement me on how well behaved 'the kids' are. Radar went from being a pushy racetrack flunky to a Canine Good Citizen and Certified Therapy Dog. Pinky is now following in his pawprints. Jennifer & Breslin are direct. firm, compassionate, fun and supportive. They sincerely care about helping people develop lifelong partnerships with their dogs. When our greyhound, Minnie, went missing two years ago, the kindness and support that we received from Jennifer, Breslin and the entire Pawsitive Dog family was indescribable. I can never repay them for all they did for Radar & I. The fact that two trainers can calmly control 30 dogs is something to be commended. How many dogs are in Ceasar Milan's pack? If the Pawsitive Dog was "an institution where dogs were locked up in cages all day", if they "employed a hard edge and discouraged the natural warmth and healthy energy" they would have gone out of business a long time ago. Radar has attended day care at the Pawsitive Dog and also boarded overnight with Jennifer & Breslin. He returns home tired and happy and I always receive a full report from Jennifer & Breslin on how he did and even photos of some of their adventures. Crates [not cages] are a training tool widely used by all dog trainers. Radar & Pinky have free run of the house during the day, but at night, they always snuggle up in their crates. But maybe that's just because they are den animals. When out on a stroll, the kids always wear their prong collars and I use an E-collar to assist in recall training. Again, these are training tools, not instruments of torture and the kids have no problem with either form of collar. Radar thinks it makes him look like a punk rocker & Pinky wants one with Swarovski crystals on it. I don't have human children, but I am an extremely busy professional, I have a social life, I exercise daily, and I always eat before the Radar & Pinky do. It's called organization. On inclement days, when it's pouring rain or the sidewalks are rutted with ice, I jump up on my stairmaster and Radar & Pinky trot alongside me on the treadmill. People use home gyms all the time, why shouldn't dogs? It provides physical and mental stimulation. The only time they get freaked out is when I start singing, but unfortunately, not even the Pawsitive Dog can help with that I am aware of local training facilities that have veterinarians on staff, but scientists?? Doing research on what? Pawsitive Dog prices are fair and competitive. I've purchased knowledge that I will have for a lifetime. I've made friends that I will have for a lifetime. We brought our Boston Terriers to Jen almost two years ago. Gus was peeing on our bed. Every single day. All I can say is, it's worth the investment. I only wish I could go back and follow all her instructions to the letter from day one, but I needed more training than the dogs did. It may seem at first like she's ruining your free-wheeling doggie fun, but never fear, you can train back in that cute but fresh behavior on cue (and then make it stop on cue as well!) If you're looking for 100% positive methods, this might not be the right fit for you. But different dogs require different tools, so it's helpful to have someone who is knowledgeable about so many of them. read more

I have been attending classes at Pawsitive Dog for quite some time. I came there looking for help with a very dog and child-aggressive rescue dog. I had been through three other training courses with him, and he was totally out of control. Jennifer's good teaching was a tremendous help. My guy now just looks at me for a treat instead of trying to attack other dogs. Jen's methods are quite subtle, and some of the negative feedback really misrepresents the training methods. There is a strong emphasis on rewarding calm, stable behavior, and my dog always leaves the class with a belly full of treats. Jennifer has a reputation for working successfully with very difficult dogs, and that does involve some physical correction for really bad behavior. The only time I have seen strong correction is for extreme aggression, and she is so skilled that she gets through to the dogs very quickly and they all love her. Her theory is that one very clear correction for truly rotten behavior is better than endless ineffective corrections. I think the real issue some people have is that Jennifer understands that she is training the owners as much as the dogs. It is hard work for the owners to think about things from the dog's point of view and act consistently in a way that helps the dog to make good choices. Personally, I am really grateful to her for the insights she has shared and for her help with a really tough dog. It has made a huge difference in my life and his. Right now, I am in class with my second dog, and we are having a great time learning together. I think she is worth every penny, but it is hard work. I would not go anywhere else. read more

I was born and raised on a farm and grew up with animals all my life. It wasn't until approximately five years ago, now living in the heart of Boston and bringing home Olde Engish Bulldogge puppies, that I realized how little I really knew about my favorite animal. Due to my lack of knowledge, I found the most amazing trainer, Jenifer Vickery at The Pawsitive Dog, and became so enamored with both her training and knowledge that I did a short (500 hours) internship with her to further my skills both mentally and physically. In the past we have always lived in a place with a yard and easy in/out access for play and potty time for our dogs. Now, living in a condo on the 29th floor with the Boston Common a block away as our "yard," raising puppies was a whole new game, mentally and physically. We were now faced with leash pulling, squirrel chasing, street manners, elevator manners, holding it, jumping, etc. One time, Bubba got away from me and decided to cross Tremont Street by himself. Luckily, or unluckily, he ran into the side of a taxi and bounced back towards me unharmed. Gracie would bolt at the sight of a squirrel and scare whoever she raced by trying to capture it, sometimes going tree to tree. We needed help!! Through an exhaustive search for the right trainer, we made an evaluation appointment with Jenifer Vickery at The Pawsitive Dog. It was love at first meet and with so much knowledge and a positive training approach we began our road to our current "enjoyable lifelong partnership with our dogs." During our evaluation my husband said something that hit home, "I sit at work and worry about the well-being of my wife and dogs." So, Bubba and Gracie were signed up for two weeks of accelerated training and while the dogs were working with Jenifer, she started our human training with classes. Our journey began with hard work, tears, joy, Jenifer's knowledge, positive training, guidance and love for what she does. Today, our training continues but on an advanced level working towards competition obedience! If you would have even hinted at the beginning we would be at this level with our dogs I would have laughed. However, as long as you are willing to work, listen and commit, Jenifer will take you as far as you want to go - and enjoy it along the way! Today, Bubba and Gracie have three titles, CGC (Canine Good Citizen), TD (Therapy Dog) and TT (Temperament Test). Also, Bubba has been Dog of the Month and, the most prestigious title of all, The Pawsitive Dog's Dog of the Year!! Bubba and Gracie go to a children's hospital twice a week to work with special needs children as therapy dogs. Bubba and Gracie are working on obedience and rally competition training and should have titles within the year. However, our most impressive accomplishment, with Jenifer's help, is having two dogs that can go anywhere, do anything with us and are known in our building for their impeccable manners and disposition. Dear L.O. I'm sorry that +dog was not a match for you and your dog and glad that you found another option. While we are all entitled to our own opinions, a few of your comments were inaccurate. Day school dogs are not left in crates for 12 hours a day. Throughout the course of the day, they rotate from crates, to dog beds, running treadmill, X-pen, play groups with other classmates and working with the trainers and interns; receiving a variety of physical and mental stimulation. I adopted my first dog six years ago and yes, I was a bit afraid to have a 70lb animal living in my tiny condo. Jen did not cater to my fear, but helped me face my fear and work through it, enabling me to become a confident, competent dog owner. I began training with Jenifer at The Pawsitive Dog many years ago. I admired Jenifer's enthusiasm and connection with all dogs. She immediately had a better connection with my dog than I did, but she soon taught me to be the best leader I can be! I have since moved north to Vermont, but often call Jenifer for doggy advice when I am stumped here at home. I've read reviews that complain that not all of the Pawsitive Dog's methods are "positive". I beg to differ. The Pawsitive Dog uses many different motivational training tools such as treats and toys, but more importantly they also employ the most natural training technique there is - teaching dog owners to communicate to your dog the way a dog would. In a pack of dogs, when the leader needs to convey something to the pack they do not beg, plead, give kisses and bribe with cookies.... they discipline (clearly and fairly) and reward (with praise and affection). It's what dogs are hardwired to understand. It is unfair and confusing to treat a dog like a human and it is rarely successful. At The Pawsitive Dog you'll learn how to have a great connection with your dog, introduce variety and spice in their lives through a lot of fun training exercises. This place is awesome. Jennifer and Breslin have not only helped me train my naughty little girl they have taught me so much about dog behavior along the way. Prior to going to training at The Positive Dog my dog growled at every person who walked into my house or she passed on the street. They taught me how to build my dogs confidence so now she no longer growls at people except on the very rare occasion. In addition, they have helped me train my dog to do the usual sit, stay, lay down, etc. Their prices are not cheap but are well worth the money. My little Willa is worth the investment. read more

Thanks to Jen and Breslin at The Pawsitive Dog for helping me train my toy poodle, Bella. She was well on her way to being the "annoying little yappy dog" we all love to hate. Now she's secure, confident, and has passed both her Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog certifications. Classes at + Dog are totally fun, as are the Field Trips and other social opportunities for both dogs and owners. Expensive? Yes. You're paying for truly experienced professionals, not the typical "I had a dog once so I can train them" newcomer. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. And yeah, the pet store upstairs is a little non-descript, but you won't find more knowledgeable or nicer folks anywhere, and they offer advice and supplies for virtually any sort of pet, including the best selection of premium dog and cat food in the city. read more

I was a bit skeptical due to the location, but I can admit when I am wrong. The real dog whisperer really does live in the basement of a semi-sketchy pet store in Roxbury. I promise. All the employees here have been consistently pleasant and knowledgeable. The training course coupled with the daytime training sessions have turned our dog around in a very short time. After 2 weeks we were able to leave him alone at home for 4 hours without destructive behavior which had been a daily occurrence in the past. In the matter of 3 months they have our doggy doing his business on command, walking without pulling, and about half a dozen other things on command. I had a bad experience with group dog classes in the past, but no matter how large the class, you will get the attention you and your pet need when you work with Jen. The trainers act as your partner and do not speak down to you. They give feedback in very positive humorous ways. I could not speak more highly of this business. They are certainly expensive but I cannot complain because the results were real and they have taught us so much in a very short time. I only wish we had found them sooner !! read more

I was so shocked that I felt I had to go on here and let people know this. I am getting a puppy next month and wanted to start my search on some training. The woman I spoke with on the phone inquiring about this was SO aggressive and SO rude. I couldn't even talk with her. With under a minute into the conversion she told me that if I cared enough about my dog I would come in for a consultation when I just wanted some general information about how classes work, etc. She didn't even let me talk about my situation( that he was a pup and i didn't have him yet). We've been taking our female yellow lab to Pawsitive Dog since she was only a few months old and have been nothing but thrilled. We began by attending classes the started her in Day School which we have continued ever since. For two working young professionals, sending her to Pawsitive Dog has done wonders to help us with training. Although it is still a lot of work as owners, the jump start and constant attention she receives at class is a tremendous help and having the team on hand for questions along the way is great. I just had a very uncomfortable telephone conversation with a woman that honestly should not be answering this company's phone given her disposition. I was calling to ask about the "accelerated overnight training" (boarding) offering. I wanted to know what dates they had available, knowing there would be a wait. I was told - rather rudely - that they could not do a consultation until the end of July for placement into the program but that they could be boarded straight away if all went well. Basically, I would have to wait for a month and half to know whether the program was even right for my dogs and then they would board them immediately (but no guarantee on timing). I guess it never dawned on these people that boarding a pet (or two!) is not a decision most dog owners take lightly and I am evaluating THEM just as much - if not more - as they are evaluating my dogs. I want to make sure I find the proper place to care for and train my dogs. I also need to be able to plan for it since, after all, it is boarding not just weekly training sessions which can start at any time. I need to do my homework and check out different options - something they obviously don't consider nor support. So I was told that they are booked for all appointments until the end of July. Right on their website they state they are not accepting any new doggie students for regular training, so I knew they were booked. No surprise there. But it also states that they ARE accepting dogs for boarding. I totally understand that they are booked up for appointments. Honestly, I get it. Even though she kept telling me I didn't understand...repeatedly. I do. Really. It is not a hard concept to grasp, even for me. However, if there are spots available for boarding, wouldn't it make sense for them to accommodate boarding consultations? When I explained that I needed to know the dogs had a place to stay and that I wasn't comfortable leaving it to the last minute (especially since I was having quite a lot of doubt about this company based on this lovely phone conversation) she sharply told me to go somewhere else. How nice. But it is advice I will definitely be taking! I am stunned at how insulting this woman was. I can't imagine her dealing with dogs. Certainly not my dogs - I wouldn't subject them to that! So I guess in a way I am glad I got this sneak peek into how these people operate. It proved quite clearly this is not a place I would ever let care for my dogs. read more

My daughter moved to Boston with her one year old German Short Hair Pointer, Traynor in 2010 and although he had been in training in Chicago, and at hunting camps in Illinois, it was not until Traynor started school at Pawsitive Dog that he really began to behave. He went from an overly energetic GSP, to a well trained companion. I read the one sad review that talked about cages and treadmills - but Traynor soon moved out the crate and onto the dog beds on the floor. Traynor is 70#'s of never ending energy the treadmill is a great compromise when there is no where to take a dog exercise he needs. Jen and Breslin are supportive, and Traynor gets all special guidance he needs. When away, Traynor stays with Jen or Breslin and he is a very happy dog. If it were not for Jen, and +Pawsitive Dog, my grand-dog would be up in northern Wisconsin, untrained and missing home. read more

I did not have a positive experience with this company. I booked a month and half in advance and was told my appt was given away when I called to confirm. The lady I spoke to was not interested in scheduling another appointment and was talking over me the over me the entire time. It was rather defensive and surprisingly confrontational. I can't speak to the actual training as I never got that far. For people who work with animals, it is disappointing they don't interact well with people. I feel like I was the luckiest person to find the Pawsitive Dog 12 years ago. At the time my husband and I were doing all we could to manage our 6 month old female Vizsla, we had already been to two different trainers and we were nearing our wits end, it was at that point that I met someone who referred me to Jenifer Vickery at the Pawsitive Dog. It didn't take long before we felt back in control, and although I like to think of it as 'dog training', it was far more 'human training' then actual dog training. Our girl participated in day school and evening trainings and both were invaluable, even after we stopped day school we continued to go once or twice a month for years, not only to keep on our toes but also out of enjoyment and the opportunity to visit with other owners who we had met during the training classes. If we hadn't moved out of the area I'd probably still be going. Losing access to Pawsitive Dog was the by far the hardest part of the move for me, however to this day i know Jenifer is just a phone call away should I need her. That's just a small example of the customer service you get. As another person so aptly put in a review, 'it's like family' and it truly is.
