Tasty but the wait for a short line was outrageous and it was quickly obvious why. Happy to support a small business and young workers in our community but the way these were prepared was diabolical. My friend and I ordered the same exact thing. Two of something. Young man behind the counter made one in its entirety - one cup, ice in it, syrup, topping, spoon. He then closed all the ingredients and wiped down the counter. All to start it all again. To make the exact same snowball. This order of operations process lives rent free in my mind. I am hopeful with some training, employees can understand how to make a few of these at the same time. Overall I would return but not until this process is optimized. read more

The food: is the "snowball." Where I'm from, we call them snow cones...but since this is the oldest shaved ice stand in the country, they win with the name. AND they win with else! The "egg & mallow" (egg custard syrup that tastes like cream soda and vanilla with a topping of organic marshmallow cream) was perfection. It seems that The Peggy is now a place we will add to our list of favorite places to visit when we travel back to Baltimore! read more

One of my favorite snowball stands!! My last visit was on a Friday evening and there was only one person working but surprisingly it wasn't that busy. We ordered a small wild grape with marshmallow and small egg custard with marshmallow. Both snowballs were delicious. This stand has my favorite marshmallow, it doesn't clump up like a lot of other marshmallow toppings. The Peggy is the oldest snowball stand in the country having started in 1922. My first thought when reading that on their cute signage was "wow, how cool" followed by "it took us that long to invent snowballs? I mean, we had coca-cola by the late 1800s." Looking past my cynicism, you'll see that [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Peggy is an adorable little stand with quaint outdoor seating set against a backdrop of a historic home and sprawling gardens.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's definitely worth seeing. That said, it wasn't my favorite snowball. This is apparently where the egg custard flavor was invented so I knew I had to get it. The small shaved ice came with a few careful drops of egg custard syrup. I asked the friendly staff member for extra and, with a smile, she provided a few more drops. And I mean careful, painstaking DROPS. I also opted for marshmallow topping because that's one of the best parts of a snowball. It looked like this marshmallow topping came straight out of a Fluff jar. It was literally just one scoop plopped on top which made it difficult to eat. I'm used to snowballs having the marshmallow topping melted on so it's nice and gooey and laying evenly flat on top. It was $5 for this small shaved ice and while the flavor was good, at a certain point it just felt like I was eating plain ice since the syrup and topping were so meager. I guess this is a matter of personal preference but I'm used to the snowballs that are drowning in syrup. If you're someone who likes more plain shaved ice, this is your kind of place. Overall, I was impressed with the selection of flavors and the friendliness of the staff but I won't be rushing back here for snowballs. I cannot believe I just heard about this place. To be fair the Walther Gardens opened a year ago, operated by Margaret Cleveland who own that boutique across the street from Cookhouse. The snow cones here are elite - it does take a long time - there's one poor girl working the stand. [[HIGHLIGHT]]But it's a beautiful wait and the crowd is super lovely.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The Peggy is a stand on the estate of the Walther Garden. "Snow cones have been enjoyed shaved ice since the 1800s. Trucks shipping ice to the south would pass through Baltimore, and kids would chase them asking for shavings. When they brought the ice shavings back home, their mothers would make flavored syrups, such as the Baltimore favorite, egg custard, made out of eggs, vanilla, and sugar." I don't even like snowcones, but I really enjoyed the egg, custard and marshmallow fluff. You have to do the full experience and the jalapeño ice was really refreshing and spicy. Bring cash in case the system goes down. We had a really nice couple that offered to lend us money if their system went down again. We were able to pay with tap. The Peggy and Walther Gardens will definitely be on my Baltimore to do list. read more

I mean, the moment you step foot on the property of Walter's Garden, where The Peggy resides, you're instantly transformed into a little fairytale. Have not been here since high school and I love the glow up! Still the cutest snowball stand ever. Plenty of traditional and fancy flavors to choose from (can't go wrong with the class Egg Custard). Service is great but be patient as it's usually one person working. A friend and I stopped by the Peggy a few weeks on an especially hot summer day. The Peggy claims to be the oldest snowball stand in the US; I'm not sure about that, but a snowball stand has existed in this spot since at least 1922 which is impressive in and of itself! The Peggy got a facelift and a new name when some new owners took over Walther Gardens within the last few summers - new flavors (75+ Monin or housemade - the egg custard), a fluffier shaved ice that the owners believe to be closer to what snowballs would have been when the snowball stand opened, and more! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Yes, you should expect a line! Serving smiles since 1922, as the sign on the stand states, I really enjoyed stopping by Peggy's for a yummy snowball. Located next to a garden, they offer shaded seating and great service. They have a ton of great flavor options- passion fruit and mango being my choice. The awesome weather, beautiful ambiance and the sound of the ice shaver really has that summer feel. The only thing that would've made it perfect was if the area was treated for mosquitoes so we could've sat and enjoyed our snowballs for longer. The most charming snowball stand I've ever seen! It's located in a nursery/garden. You can grab a snowball and sit under the trees or walk around and shop for plants and incredible items for your home/garden. They also have a variety of seating to relax in. The snowball menu has so many options to choose from! I love the ice they use too! We will definitely be back to try more flavors and explore the shops and nursery. read more

At least it says shave ice here. Don't come from the snowball you used to get. And they take credit cards now, which is necessary because you'll easily spend $35 for your family of four. I sent this message to the owners, just a little glimpse of how bad it is. "What have you done? Century old snowballs. Yes, that happened. But tonight I got shaved ice. I had a chemical tasting fancy bottled rootbeer flavor with tiniest scoop of solid marshmallow. New residents, like yourselves, may like this but no local will. I grew up eating here. Tonight I spent $6 on something smaller than the old small, with chemical flavor on shaved ice and that dollop of organic marshmallow. Insider tips, shaved ice isn't the same as snowball ice, no one cares about organic and artisanal flavors when it's price prohibitive, you need a microscope to find the actual product, and it tastes horrible. Oh, and the shaved ice. I don't care if your new name is on the cup. The wooden spoon three times the size of the cup is a horrible choice. Making "The Hon", a true piece of a Baltimore summer with shaved ice, $2 for I'm sure the tiniest scoop of ice cream, chemically tasting syrup (chocolate for "the hon' and a solid fan of marshmallow,.an additional $1.50 is the worst thing you could do to that place. I am heartbroken and my family, after tonight, will no longer go there (my parents starting coming in the 1960s). Maybe the new also out of town residents will pay your hideous prices for you obnoxiously small portions with below mediocre taste. And maybe that's good enough for you. But SHAME ON YOU for pushing away people who have been loyal and frequent customers for, in many cases, 3 generations. I will tell every person I know who enjoyed Walther Gardens Snowballs to find a new place. I wouldn't even mention the price if the quality was half of what it used to be. Sadly it's at about 2% of what it once was. How dare you mess with a century of success!? You might want to look up Cafe Hon, how great it was, how a single owner who knew better than tradition, destroyed the place and insulted the city only to have Gordon Ramsay shout some sense into her. And where is it now? Nowhere. It's gone. Because a new owner came around, changed things, and was sure she knew better than decades of success and local customers. I grieve the loss of Cafe Hon chicken salad with Old Bay and Utz on the side, and now I also grieve the loss of Walther Gardens Sno-balls in Styrofoam cups that you'd chew apart to get every last drop of the amazing gooey marshmallow, chocolate, with ice cream and marshmallow." read more
