Lovely spot for Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch and also great for an evening drink or 2! I've visited on a number of occasions, for all of the above and I'd say it does breakfast/brunch best. On my most recent visit I was invited along to the P&P breakfast club. It's a networking event although I didn't see much of that going on but it was great non the less! The service was slow on this last occasion, I felt they could have done with more staff on for the event but I've not experienced this before so I'll let them off this one time :) Some guy gave an interesting talk on design and everyone was served eggs benedict with ham and salmon, accompanied by a delicious little sweet pancake skewer. I went for salmon only and it was done well, the poached eggs were perfection and I was suitably stuffed for the remainder of the morning. The coffee was delicious too. The staff were rushed off their feet but kept calm and remained approachable and friendly, very professional. Thanks The P&P!

Really funky bar & restaurant with a really relaxed feel to it. Good waitress service came over very quickly. Not a large choice of food, breakfasts and lunch mainly. Atmosphere is causal & relaxed, we were greeted upon entering the bar. Food is reasonable priced & they have some funky retro beers. Worth a visit :) Try the Philly steak with cheese with chips and home made coleslaw

After reading Jess H's ROTD I was dead set on trying this place for breakfast on my next brunch stop. I didn't have to wait long before I dragged my friend along for the experience. We arrived around half 12 (breakie is served till 4pm) and blagged one of the last proper tables however there was plenty of bar stools and window seats left which was fab. I loved the atmosphere in here - the last thing you need for breakfast is having to sit and wait in a crowded bar on a Sunday...this is my day of calm! The music in here completes the atmosphere with background favourites such and one republic. You chose your own seats on arrival and after that it is table service. We swiftly ordered some hot drinks - a coffee and earl grey tea for me. The tea came with fresh tea leaves and a free top up of water when asked! Having already sussed the menu out prior to arriving I opted for the pen and pencil eggs - poached eggs on a toasted muffin atop a sausage patty, bacon and a homemade hash brown served with a scrummy hollandaise sauce! It was a great twist on the normal eggs benedict and was just the right size for a spot of brunch! I really did love it here - regular brunch stop ... I think so!!

I like drawing. or at least i like other peoples drawings....so the name Pen & Pencil was instantly intriguing. However, its actually (apparently) based on mad men. I dont quite get it, there's veneer in places and some 60's esque stools and some faux suede....but aside from that i'm not really getting the mad men thing. But to be honest its irrelevant, so lets just say it inspired someone to build what is actually a really nice bar. There are long benches. There are many plugs (for day time laptop working) There are stools in the window for those wanting to sit alone and there is a separated area round the back for larger parties. Its 1pm right now and its full of business types, creative types and me having lunch / brunch. Stevie wonder is on the stereo and people are bustling about. But still there's a laid back atmosphere. Its not too loud, its not too quiet. Its just right. Wifi is available - necessary for any freelancer that makes bars their office and decent work space with the long benches which can easily be shared. so why am i giving it 4 stars out of 5. Well when i first walked in i nearly walked out again. The menu wasnt inspiring at all and the print / design of the menus felt more chain restuarant. HOWEVER i ignored my first impression based on this and ordered a favourite. Now i believe you can really judge a place on its eggs benedict and if thats true then this place comes up trumps! 2 eggs on 1 large muffin topped with a perfect hollandaise and rocket. Yes thats right you heard me say one muffin, something i too would normally complain about, but it was large enough to accommodate the 2 eggs and *(drum roll) came with perhaps the best hash brown i've eaten on the side. (good for yolk mopping). I initially thought the hash brown was breaded camembert, which was a little surprising on the side of an eggs benedict, so was delighted to find a truly excellent hash cake perfectly fried. I was really pleased to see that behind the menu was excellent chefery (is that even a word?) I would also like to applaud a young gent called Mark who works at Pen & pencil, he was immediately attentive, helpful and knowledgeable, well spoken and polite. I then watched him serve and help a number of clients and characters at the bar. He didnt stop...when not serving finding other things to be doing behind the bar and keeping himself busy. Everyone I know love the food for this place and looking through Instagram pictures it really makes me drool from browsing their menu. We took advantage of the monday 50%off and their happy hour from 5pm. Having ordered a 3 course meal with a glass of wine, cocktail and tea. The meal costed £40.00 between two people. Plus it was close to Piccadilly Station as my friend had to catch a train back to London at 7pm. Starter: We ordered jalapeño poppers, this fillings of the cheese was like potatoes croquettes that is nice and fluffy but it was a shame that there wasn't a lot of heat. Main: At first, I thought I won't get fill up because the plate looks so small but at the end I nearly couldn't finish the plate. We also ordered a burger, which was nice and juicy and they cooked how I like it (pink in the middle!) Chips were cooked and seasoned too. Dessert: Finally cheesecake was creamy and not overly stodgy plus the plum sauce with a hint of cinnamon was quite tart that really helps to cut through the swetness and compliment the flavour well. Value for money, good quality food but mediocre service as it was hard to judge whether we should be seated by the waitress or not a no one greeted us as we walked in.

Lacklustre and didn't live up to expectations. Very much style over substance. Loved the interior of this newish place in the NQ but the slow service and average tasting, cold food really let it down. The menu choices looked really good, I wanted almost everything off the breakfast menu, which is available until 4pm. Are there any happier words than 'all day breakfast' on a menu? We waited a long time for the food. The place was half empty so I'm not sure why try can't get meals out in a decent time frame. It's hard to get a fry up wrong but sadly the American breakfast was a disaster. When elements of a meal are cold then it makes it hard to enjoy the whole plate. The toasted muffin (I'd switched the pancake for it as I needed bread to mop up a post wine tasting hangover) was stone cold. The beans and eggs were, at best, luke warm. Mr F are his Philly cheese steak sandwich but we both agreed we wouldn't go back. Sad as the interior was just right for my taste.

I visited Saturday for some pre wedding show fuel. We only went to P&P as Alabama's was (as always) rammed and we couldn't get a table for 45 minutes. I was gutted realising I couldn't take my friend to Alabama's after raving about it so much. However, P&P absolutely did it disappoint! Promptly seated by a member of staff with a drinks order taken. Followed by the All American Breakfast which was very reasonably priced at £9.50! The hash browns were SO good so if you do visit, make sure you sling some on your order. Pit Beans were delicious but the show stealer was the Poached Eggs, they were amazing and cooked to perfection. Cracking venue for Sunday chills with friends, we loved the vibe in there. Shall look forward to my next visit. OH! And before I forget, they make a great latte!

Stop by for a drink before dinner at el Capo on a Tuesday .. A very relaxing bar/restaurant. Wooden decor like most of the NQ bars.. I had a Thyme and Life - it's pretty tasty, and pretty pink color with some hibiscus petals.. I'm not sure if I would go there for food just seem very generic . But I could be wrong since I haven't had food there. But I will go back for some cocktails.

I was meeting friends for brunch in Manchester and they asked me to pick a place to eat, the only caveat was that it must serve eggs benedict. We decided to try out The Pen and Pencil as I've heard good things about their brunches and my friends also found the menu acceptable. We went one Saturday at around 10:30am. Our friends got there before we did and were seated in the back of the place. We were able to find them after a member of staff aided us. The interior is dark with wood and art on the walls. The seats were quite comfortable and the menu small but varied enough to appease any taste buds. I ordered a glass of tap water and an English Breakfast tea. The tea came in an individual filter tea pot with a small jug of milk. The staff and no problems topping your pot with more hot water if you request it. I decided to go for the steak and eggs as it is Pen and Pencil's signature brunch dish. 4oz pave rump steak, two fried eggs, a hash brown and a pot of hollandaise sauce. They asked me how well I wanted my steak done prior. The whole meal was cooked really well, although I felt my hash brown was maybe too charred on the outside, the inside was lovely and soft. The steak was cooked the way I specified, the fried eggs still had that lovely gooey yolk I love and there was plenty of hollandaise. Win! Two of my friends chose the eggs royale and one chose the avocado and feta. The latter was served with sourdough muffin layered with chilli jam, rocket and two soft poached eggs. The eggs royale came with a sourdough muffin, lightly smoked salmon, buttery wilted spinach and soft poached eggs with hollandaise sauce. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and would come back here again. The place is really nice and the staff friendly, I really can't complain.

We went to the Pen and Pencil a while back not long after it opened. Aside from curiosity and wanting to try a new place together with a coupon lead us there on a school night. It was quite quiet in the area we got seated, which admittedly wasn't near the main bar. For mains I ordered chicken tacos which isn't what I was brought. In fairness I think I must have misheard her when she put them down but when I clarified the situation, I was quickly brought the right dish. Having said that, the waitress did blame the kitchen staff, which whether true or not was irrelevant and not wholly professional. The food was pretty good from what I can remember and there was a decent selection of drinks on offer. At some time going forward I will definitely return for food and not just drinks (as per the photo I've uploaded with this review)

We booked in for brunch, which I'm glad we did, it was PACKED. There was a great range of brunch on offer and not too expensive. The staff were friendly, recommended items off the menu too and were attentive. My partner and I both had the American breakfast. Perfect poached eggs, bacon not over cooked and the hash brown is wonderful. We really enjoyed the food and we weren't rushed when we were finished eating too. So we had another round of teas/coffee and had a good natter despite it being busy. Brunch was good, I will be back for lunch or dinner next time!

Bottomless brunch; my friend booked us 3 bar seats for the £35 brunch deal - unlimited food and alcoholic beverages. The alcohol selection included Mimosa, Prosecco, Amstel, House Cocktail (ours was rum based) and a Bloody Mary. Tip - the amount of rum in the cocktail is extremely generous, we witnessed the bar tender pour a whole bottle into the big cocktail mix. I only managed 2 breakfasts; I had the Eggs Pen and Pencil (muffin, poached eggs, sausage patty, bacon and hollandaise sauce) followed by the American Pancakes with berries. The former I found really tasty and couldn't fault, but this does contain a lot of food if you're planning on getting more than one breakfast! The pancakes were not what I consider American as they were quite flat, as opposed to light and fluffy. I had seen pictures on Yelp of larger ones, so not sure what happened there. The service was initially a little slow and as we were sat at the opposite and of the bar we felt a little neglected compared to the bigger tables. I had to go up to ask for our drinks at one point (it's table service), but service improved afterwards. The rule is supposed to be one drink at a time, but a very lovely waiter kept brining us drinks! Top tips - make sure you go with an empty stomach and pace yourself with the drink as is easy to get drunk quickly! I'd also ask for a table as opposed to at the bar.

    Dreamy combination!

Bottomless brunch. Need I say more! The concept alone sounds amazing but with a menu to make even the serial brunchers's mouth water this is the place to be in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Held once a month the £35 a head is a bargain if you're anything like me and can put away 3 courses and non stop booze. The only comment I would make would be that I was disappointed I didn't get to work my way through the whole menu. My food baby was too much by the end of the 4 hours. Maybe mix and match plates would be an option! Put away your pens and pencils and get down to bottomless brunch! (And take me with you)

I had a margarita that tasted good but the glass was 80% filled with the biggest block of ice that I have ever seen - for £14.50!!!! Advice - stick with beer or wine and don't even consider cocktails!!! But now I know why, even though it's not hidden, it's listed as being on Lever St but in reality it set back from the road slightly down Faraday St. So it's not immediately visible from Lever St unless you're looking for it; which is really my only reason for not giving it 5*. Pie and Ale doesn't bound head long towards the current fashion of ultra trendy scrounged and up-cycled interiors that so many bars are doing, it's interior is very clean and simple but also warm and inviting and won't age or go out of fashion as quickly as some of the other bars in the NQ. It's also got several different space so you can choose to sit in the open seating area with the large glass windows, next to the bar at high benches or walk around the corner and up the stairs for a more cosy intimate set of booths above the bar; this means the location can suit a lot of different situations. They have a good selection of ales for the likes of myself, but have a good range of bottle beers and your general assortment of keg beers, wines etc. The pies are on the pricey side (£9.95-£11.95) especially compared with the likes of Pie Minister (£7.95 for the Mothership) only a few blocks away, but they are big and hearty as you'd hope and with the availability of cask beer (Pie Minister only has bottles) improves the experience for me. In my opinion it's always nicer having a fresh well kept pint than having bottled beer. I had the Moufflon and Minted Chocolate which was spot on as far as I'm concerned the chocolate and stout sauce went fantastically with the well cooked steak. I really thought the selection was excellent (and well priced - a flight of 3 thirds was £3.40 of cask ale) and their bottles are a good mix of what America and Europe has to offer! This place is going to be amazing for the world cup with a big screen up in the main bar showing all the matches (they were actually showing the Champions league final on Sat night, adding to the ambience) - and the music was just the icing on the cake - what a fantastic selection of reggae, dub and hiphop for the 3 hours I was in. Really looking forward to going back and having some great beer with a phat ass pie soon! *extra note should go to all the waiting staff - amazing friendliness and table service all night - nice job guys!*

When we checked in and were asked if there were any allergies we made jokes about my husband's allergy to cinnamon - that we would not need to worry about out it before desert. We ordered a few items from the menu - which is a very delicious mix of classics with some twists (tempura fried fish and chips for example). Order was taken and a couple minutes later the manager came and said "I am sorry - but the sauce to the fish contains a bit of cinnamon" wow! We change the order of course and the manager came back to the table asking if we would be worried about cross termination. We have been not and everything went well after that. Great service. The food itself plays with the alchemist theme for example the chorizo meatballs come with a syringe to inject your own amount of cheese (what you think? Yes of course o injected the whole Syringe into the little delicious meatball duhh). The menu consist of a lot of small items which makes me so happy since I can have so many bites of different things and at the alchemist they are all worth it! And of course classics like burger, salads and sandwiches alongside their mains. The menu is not too big but literally has something for everyone. You have to try the crispy pork skins! After we had been told that the crispy fish contains cinnamon my husband learned they offer their "chicken in a basket" as a vegetarian version as well and that is what he got. Damn that is so good: A bed of chips (fries for our American friends) are surrounded by one of the best coleslaw I had in a long time (almost as good as Guy Fieri's if not even better) then slightly pan seared onions and peppers layer on top of the fries. Ready to be mixed in. Then of course a generous amount of chicken or in this case plant based chicken smothered in a sweet chili sauce. Not to forgot to mention that it came with an extra little bowl of dipping sauce. Delicious! We also had a mocktail which name I might not be allowed to recite here let's named it "virgin adult film star" what a perfect combination of fruit, creme and sweetness. Yummmmmm To end the night I had coffee and Choclate - any serving of coffee comes with a set of three pralines. What a way to end the night at the alchemist.
