This was such an unexpected highlight of our trip. The story behind this place really resonates with me, women supporting women. The self guided tour is great, very easy to navigate and quick and interesting facts. I didn't find myself getting bored at all quite the opposite I was entranced by Anna Burts story. All the women that work there were very kind and helpful. Truly a hidden gem. If I was in a place financially that I could donate I would've but, I hope this expresses how special of a place this is! read more

We visited the Peña-Peck House in St. Augustine and really enjoyed the experience overall. It's a beautifully preserved historic home dating back to the late 1700s, and it offers a nice glimpse into Spanish colonial and early American life in the area. The house itself has a lot of charm, with period furnishings and rooms that help you imagine what life was like in early St. Augustine. The guided tour was informative and gave a good mix of history, architecture, and stories about the families who lived there. The garden area is also a peaceful highlight and adds to the overall atmosphere of the property. It's centrally located downtown, making it an easy stop while exploring other nearby attractions. read more

Just a wonderful representation of 2 time periods in St A: 1st Spanish and early 30s thru the 20th century. This tour is a must see in order to get a great insight to how a doctor lived and the Spanish treasurer officer. This Josie is huge! You cannot tell by the outside but it will take an hour to see the whole house if you have questions. The upstairs is HUGE. Because the last owner left this house to the city and intern, the women's exchange took it over nearly everything in the house is original to the house. There are some items that are barred from the time. Like the Victorian clothing which is just stunning. The families that lived in this house with the center of the community and because of that they have some amazing stories to tell when you come to Saint Augustine this is the first place I would come. read more

This is a great peek into the lives of the two families who lived in this house. And it only "costs" a donation to the organization that impeccably runs it. Most of the furnishings are from the most recent family--descendants of Dr. Peck, but there are some remnants from Mr. Peña, the Spanish treasurer. In addition, proceeds from your donations and store sales support the financial empowerment of women. read more

I have toured the house twice. once with a docent, once with their new automated tour. The automated tour requires the visitor to hold the device up to their ear for around 13 sites. The sound is substandard and the tour is boring. At the very least there should be headphones, or a jack to insert headphones. The docent tour was far superior, and I am curious about why the downgrade in service? The docent had about a dozen people on the tour. The automated tour had two people with a volunteer shadowing them. read more

The Pena-Peck House is a historic home built in 1750, and was the residence of the King of Spain's royal Treasurer, Juan Esteban de Peña. Like much of the rest of the city, it was built of coquina stone. In 1837, Dr. Peck completely renovated the structure, adding a second story of wood to accommodate both his home and his medical practice. When Dr. Peck's granddaughter died in 1931, she willed the property to the city of St. Augustine to be exhibited to the public as a house museum. Because of the economic decline brought about to the entire nation due to the Great Depression, the city did not want this burden, and that is when an organization called The Woman's Exchange came forward and took over. They provide tours of this historic museum house, free of charge, and show the antique furnishings and artifacts to the visitors. The Woman's Exchange also has a store in its first floor where they sell gifts such as jewelry, accessories, and hot sauces. All profits go toward helping women in need. This home is a popular wedding venue, due to its gardens. Pictures of the inside of the home are NOT allowed, which is why you will not see any pictures accompanying any of the reviews. Our tour guide was great, very friendly, and informative, and my friend and I gladly purchased some hot sauces from The Woman's Exchange, in exchange for our informative tour. read more

I feel like many people pass this place but few know about it! As a historian, this kind of venue is right up my alley. The home dates back to the 18th century but also had different occupants later in the 19th century. You get a nice guided tour from one of the ladies in the Women's Exchange, a local charity. They operate and docent the home because several of the home's inhabitants were affiliated with their organization. You get to see different layers of time, from coquina walls to Victorian influences and decor. It's probably haunted, too, but I'll let you figure that one out yourself ;) read more

St. Augustine is a great place to learn about our complex past and the Pena-Peck House Museum was our first cultural tour in the Ancient City. We absolutely loved the tour given by Margo. She is charming and funny as well as fact filled! She is very knowledgeable in the history of the house which spans from the 1500's till the early 20th Century. Most of the tour covers the Victorian and post Victorian era, although there is a wealth of information on the first Spanish occupation of the house. This was my main issue. I wanted to see more and hear more from the earliest Spanish occupation. I mean, St. Augustine is a place to visit if you are interested in the history of the "First Coast". The first floor is devoted to the earliest Spanish occupation and has a visitor orientation room which has artifacts and information from all periods the house was occupied.This makes sense since the second floor was added long after the first Spanish occupation. Even though I was more interested in the house's Spanish history I loved the rest of the tour. The tour is free but it deserves a donation. We left one! It takes about an hour to finish the tour. The Pena-Peck House is associated with The Woman's Exchange of St. Augustine which is a non profit organization that helps women who have fallen on hard times. One thing they do is help women in need with scholarships. All the more reason to donate money for the tour and purchase the great things they sell in their gift shop. I was there before four. But I was not allowed to tour. They informed me tours end at four. I look at my watch and it is before four. I walked out disgusted shaking my head. A few blocks later...the four o'clock bells started ringing. OH I forgot to mention I stood around for a while waiting to be acknowledged..then =when they got done chitchatting they said they were not happy to see me. Hey, sorry to interrupt YOUR DAY!. I never even wanted a tour, just a quick look around. I was excited to see the place, especially after learning about the women helping women history. I just wanted to feel a part of it. I drove four hours to see NOTHING. Paid $10 to park. I will NOT be back. They did contact me with an apology. read more
