Their papayas are great. Arrive in two days. I've gotten them many times. Sometimes need a couple days to finish ripening.

One of my fondest childhood memories is going to Tamashiro Market with my dad…read more When we lived in Kalihi, this was our usual spot. And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. I still remember the excitement I felt when I saw the pink building with the huge crab. I thought back then was to look at everything but now I understand that it meant something more..... something special--time with my dad. It's with a sad heart that Tamishiro Market is now closed. Thank you, Tamashiro, for providing quality food and memories for so many years. You were more than a market--you were part of my childhood

Goodbye to another Hawaii landmark! Tamashiro Market is closing its doors on April 30, 2026…read more FPO and I went the Sunday before for one last tour of the legendary fish market. It looked the same as it did the first time I went with my grandfather. I picked up a couple pounds of dry aku for my favorite sister and some tee shirts as memorabilia. It was pretty busy and I expect that will continue until They close. Still, the people were nice and very helpful. I'm really going to miss it!

Great local market in the heart of Chinatown…read more The fresh Hawaiian papayas and dragonfruit were so delicious. Perfect for breakfast on the hotel balcony. The papayas were around 2 for $3. Everything is weighed to determine the price. Bring cash and a reusable grocery bag. Enjoy!

During our weekly marketing jaunt into Chinatown, we went to the O'ahu Market to get some Chinese…read moreroasted meats since my husband had been asking me to make one of his favorite dishes... stir fried bitter melon with roast pork in black bean sauce. Upon approach to our fave Chinese roasters, I noticed ABC Market with its fresh locally (some imported) grown fruits and vegetables displays. ABC Market has been in O'ahu Market's stall #25 for some time now but it took me until today to stop, browse and make a purchase. As I browsed through the fruits and produce, I managed to purchase a couple of Hawaiian papayas, green onions and bitter melon. The papayas are still green but I don't usually buy ripe papayas because they ripen quite quickly so these will ripen over the next couple of days. But, the green onions aka scallions and bitter melon were fresh looking and priced competitively with the other nearby fruit and vegetable vendors. The cashier was soft spoken as she weighed our papayas and then the bitter melon before telling us how much to pay. Our total bill only came up $6.25. I don't think that this vendor takes credit or debit cards as most vendors in Chinatown are CASH ONLY. She packed our papayas, scallions and bitter melons in separate plastic bags which made it easier for us to put into our Yelp reusable tote bag. We'll be back either in a couple of days as I was eyeing the soursop and egg fruits but didn't get them today since we walked into town and didn't want to lug home too heavy bags.

Grocery shopping in Chinatown, Honolulu, Hawaii…read more.. My friend, Mrs. Wong, wanted to buy Won Bok (Chinese cabbage) to use as an ingredient in her Jai (Monk's Food - a vegetarian dish that's eaten especially at Lunar New Year). She kept saying that she wanted the "small kind". I have no idea why... Easier to cut up? We ended up at U & M Produce because she used to come here with her late husband (RIP Mr. Wong). U & M Produce is located on King Street where we had parked for free on an early Sunday morning. Mrs. Wong found a pre-packaged bag of three Chinese cabbage and was really happy. She paid cash because it was a reasonable price. The cashier was very nice and let me take a photo of the cabbages on the scale. LOL! The store was so crowded - UHG! I didn't want to go inside. I just waited on the sidewalk! I'll go back and browse later...

This store is located next to the Yat Tung Noodle Factory, across Oahu Market. The store doesn't have the brightest of lighting, but it's pretty well organized and you can tell it wants to showcase the produce. U&M offers a lot of vegetables, produce, and dry and packaged goods that you won't find at other stores. They also prepackaged a lot of its vegetables and even precut some of the big squashes or pineapples so customers don't need to purchase a giant size squash. The owner is a really nice man, and he picks up fresh produce almost everyday that's flown here directly from California. His staff are very hardworking and they're all friendly. You know, I've never asked him for U&M stands for. I just always think "you and me" lol. I'll ask him next time.

I pretty much frequent the regular stores and this one is one of them. Located on King Street at the corner of the traffic light intersecting Kekaulike Street, this produce stand has a large selection of items with 2 shopping areas: indoors and outdoors. Price-wise I find this place cheaper than others but the quality isn't that great. I'm not sure the exact reason but maybe it's because the outside shopping area is "exposed" - - the heat and exhaust from the heavy traffic on King Street play a factor? I've also noticed the change of staff and owners recently. The middle-aged female Asian cashier used to be at my go-to place in Kekaulike Market and she now works or owns this stand. If you're looking for a great selection with bargains and don't mind average or below-average quality, this is the place for you. In the outdoor shopping area near the cashier, against the wall you will find "discounted" items where fruits and veggies are pre-bagged for quick sale. They're still in pretty good condition but will have to be consumed within a day or two. This place is CASH and does accept EBT cards.
