One of my fondest childhood memories is going to Tamashiro Market with my dad. When we lived in Kalihi, this was our usual spot. And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. I still remember the excitement I felt when I saw the pink building with the huge crab. I thought back then was to look at everything but now I understand that it meant something more..... something special--time with my dad. It's with a sad heart that Tamishiro Market is now closed. Goodbye to another Hawaii landmark! Tamashiro Market is closing its doors on April 30, 2026. FPO and I went the Sunday before for one last tour of the legendary fish market. It looked the same as it did the first time I went with my grandfather. I picked up a couple pounds of dry aku for my favorite sister and some tee shirts as memorabilia. In 1913, at the age of fourteen, Chogen Tamashiro emigrated from Okinawa to work on a sugar plantation on the Island of Hawaii. Some years later, Chogen and his wife Iris Yoshiko, purchased or leased land from the plantation and started farming and raising pigs. In 1941, they opened a farm store in Hilo on Kamehameha Avenue. After the April 1, 1946 tsunami devastated Hilo and the family's market, Chogen made in 1947, the courageous decision to relocate to Honolulu and open a small neighborhood market, in a modest wooden building, on the corner of North King and Palama. In 1954, eldest son Walter convinced his father to transform the market into a fresh fish, crab and seafood market and that new focus would lead to Tamashiro Market becoming known as "Home of the Finest Seafoods" in Honolulu, for generations. In 1962, Walter Tamashiro decided that to better serve his customers, he would tear down the original, two story, wood building and build the three story, concrete and CMU structure we see today. He strategically painted the building pink, like the two distinct pink buildings in Hawaii at the time, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Tripler Hospital. On a trip to Japan, his brother Johnny, stumbled upon a giant red crab facsimile and excitedly shipped it to Walter. With the installation of the eye-catching, monster red crab, high on the corner of the building, Tamashiro Market was collectively celebrated as an iconic seafood market. For me, the news of Tamashiro Market's closing marks the end of the shopping for fresh fish experience for kama'aina's. I cannot think of any other place that provides the best quality fresh fish, at the most reasonable price; that is conveniently located, is clean and a place where you can touch, smell and hand select the fish you want; and have it cleaned and wrapped by skilled, accommodating fish cutters, as you're standing there watching. One of those establishments I took for granted because somehow I just assumed it would be here forever :( sadly I was mistaken as they are scheduled to close at the end of April 2026. Go early if you are trying to get your hands on some poke. We had stopped by this past Saturday at 9am and majority had already sold out with no replenishments. In my opinion people were just being greedy and overly buying.. Aunty in front of me didn't like the taste of ginger but still proceeded to buy out one of the only ginger poke's left for the sake of it. Goofy if you ask me. I completely forgot the huge selection of fish they had. My Husband had been trying to find Red Snapper for the longest time and we've gone to Seafood City and Palama since it's on our side. Of course we would find it here lol. The cleaning (scaling and gutting) of it was perfect! We did buy an extra Snapper to freeze. Every Employee was still so friendly and worked extremely fast in trying to get the customers in and out as lines to check-out were overflowing into the aisles. This was my first time at this market although I've heard of this establishment and the quality of its poke and food offerings for a while. Since I was there around 10/11 am, the options were slim. I didnt have time to wait for the replenishment due to my upcoming flight. I chose what was left and had no regrets. Both options were prepared with fresh ingredients and pricey. The octopus was slightly salty but delicious. The ahi poke with crab was the star of the show (*in my Latasha Lee voice*). That was the best poke I've had in a long time. I got my first taste of fresh Opihi and poke bowls once I landed in Honolulu from San Jose. This was my first Hawaiian poke I had ever had in my life, being born and raised here, since none of my family members were fond of raw seafood. They had a wide variety of seafood options to choose from, including Spicy Ahi, Limu Ahi, Tako (Octopus), Scallops, Squid, and more. They even have prepackaged cooked fish ready to eat. For now, I'm only here for their unique poke by the pound. I went on a poke haul with Spicy Ahi, Limu Ahi with Ogo Seaweed, Taegu (Korean-marinated codfish), Sweet Onion Ahi Poke, Opihi (Limpet), Tako, and a Kulolo (Taro Coconut Milk pudding) for dessert. Everything was still fresh in the container when I drove back to my hotel in Waikiki. Old school fish market with the best tako poke on the island, IMO. I'm not a big mayo fan, so I'm super excited whenever they have their spicy shoyu ahi. Poke bowl prices are fair, esp since their fish is always fresh and high quality. That said, I try to save a little by getting poke ala carte and scoop of rice on the side. Currently, they're open till 1PM most of the week, 4PM Fridays and Saturdays, and closed Mondays. I used to stop after work at 2-3 days a week, but with the earlier hours, I can only go on days off or the weekend. Been to the pros, Tamashiro's has got a bunch of selections for fresh poke, fish slabs or filets, and a variety of other seafood, both fresh and frozen. Came here to get some sashimi. Good quality fish. Different grades of tuna and got king salmon from NZ too but I had to skin it and pick some small bones out. Price was OK, not cheap but not ridiculously expensive. The tuna belly was $42 per lb. Their octopus was good. There were 2 kinds. The more expensive one was supposed to be more tender. Their crab shrimp scallop poke was to die for. I'd totally come back just for that alone. It's a small market with a small parking lot but I was lucky to find parking. Staff were friendly enough. At the end of my trip to O'ahu, I was resigned to think that real Hawaiian poke wasn't for me. Granted, we only got poke from Foodland, so what do I know? But I wanted to give it another go before heading to the airport, and after a quick Yelp search, we spontaneously came here. Tamashiro Market had some of the freshest poke we had on our trip to Hawaii. Came here around 9:30am on a Thursday morning - lots of different poke as well as seafood options inside. We got: 1/4lb Ahi w/ onion This was 28.95/lb - the most expensive one I think they had but still very very fairly priced as I think the poke at ono seafood was $30+ something a lb & I would argue that Tamashiro market was even more fresh. This has a very subtle kick to it and was really well seasoned 1/4lb Ahi w/ creamy crab sauce This was 25.95/lb and noted as a 2021 winner of Poke Fest. We could tasted the sweet crab w/ some subtle bright citrus notes as well. I think this would've been even more delicious on rice but our favorite between the 2 was the ahi with onion. In a discussion of where to purchase fresh poke, we settled on Tamashiro Market. It's a grocery store with a large seafood counter located in a grittier neighborhood about a mile away from Chinatown on N King St. The initial market was opened in the early 1940s on the Big Island. After being damaged by a tsunami, the business was relocated from Hilo to this current address in Oahu. There was a small lot with several parking spaces in front of the building. We visited on a weekday morning when there were few customers. A vast selection of live and fresh seafood was available, both locally and flown in from around the world. Lots of fish cuts were on display in the chilled display cases at the seafood counter. I wish I would have taken the time to ask for some taste samples. The different poke styles ranged in price from $18 to $30 per pound which seemed pricey for the higher end. My friend was more familiar with this place so he purchased a half pound of the ahi (yellowfin tuna) limu for us. The ahi was cut into small pieces and then mixed with a simple preparation of salt, sesame oil, and seaweed strips. It was a fresh and basic flavor profile for raw fish. At a future visit, I would consider something with more spiciness and maybe a gamier species like aku (skipjack tuna). read more

Went early this AM in hope of finding fresh urchin but it didn't come in ( comes from San Diego). My friend and I decided to order our poke bowls for lunch. So let me tell you a couple reasons they get all five stars: 1) the guys are so helpful and greeted us with smiles! 2) they do not overfill your bowl with rice ( see in the picture) and all the extras was just perfect ! Before poke bowls became popular, Tamashiro's was where our parents would get poke! Haha! Located on the corner of King Street and Palama Street, Tamashiro Market is the pink building with a gigantic red crab on the top! It's in a sketchy neighborhood, so, I drove my friend from Northern California here. I told her to not catch the bus to Tamashiro Market; don't walk alone; and don't go after the sun goes down! LOL! There's a small free parking lot. Enter from Palama Street and exit to King Street. Inside, it's a basic grocery store with air conditioning, cement floors (wet in some places), and a fishy smell. Live lobsters and crabs, whole fish, fish fillets ready to make sashimi and poke, fresh produce, baked goods, cooking ingredients, tofu, and other items are available. In the back, the poke selection is in the display case. The gal behind the case was so nice to my friend (Maybe because my friend was wearing a lei - signifying that she's a tourist)! My friend was given so many samples of poke - the Hawaiian style with ogo and inamona, ginger poke, crab poke, spicy poke, ahi vs. aku poke, etc. Wow! That's really the Aloha Spirit! Omg this is the best poke I've had! So happy I got to try it when I was in Hawaii. I wish I would've gotten it more when I was there. My family always stops by here whenever we need a certain type of fish for dinner. We especially love the Hamachi Kama. I always make sure to get some spicy tuna poke as a treat. My first stop right after landing in Hawaii was this market to get some fresh poke because I saw on a blog online that this place had some of the freshest and best poke. When we turned into the parking lot, my bf and I looked at each other with raised eyebrows because no way such a small market sells good poke. There wasn't even a line when we went too so we were very skeptical. Even though we were pretty hungry, we decided to order 1 bowl to share just in case it wasn't good. Boy were we surprised after taking a bite. We devoured the bowl so quickly that my bf had to go back in to order 2 more bowls.
