We also shared a giant endless pot of tea. This place is really a special place, the day's menu is full of charm, and the service is excellent. When I was there, the dining area was quiet with plenty of available seating, definitely not a cramped place! I hope to return sometime, it was a great experience, food and all. I liked it so much I picked up a couple of their shirts to keep the memory.

I ordered a Pornstar Martini made with passion fruit vodka, Passoã, passion fruit purée, pineapple juice, vanilla syrup, and a side of prosecco. It was absolutely delicious. Jon enjoyed an Old Fashioned, and of course we added two more glasses of prosecco to toast the start of another trip around the sun. One of my favorite parts of the night was listening to the delightfully crusty bartenders banter with everyone at the bar. They had the perfect dry humor that made the whole place feel authentic and welcoming. Sometimes the best travel memories come from walking into a place just because the name makes you smile. It's pretty, it's relaxing and the music is pretty good with some 90's indie beats to tickle your ear drums. Other music probably plays at other times. It's also bang smack right in the middle of town so super handy but ladies beware of the icy blast of the hand-drier in the toilets. Ice burns beware! Please note, not in the Urban Dictionary sense. I was in Glasgow and heading off to a real ale festival, and thought I'd better grab some food…read morefirst in preparation, so I decided to pop in here and check it out, maybe have a pint while I decided where to go to eat. I opted for the taster plank - 1 third of a pint of three different ales, served in a plank with the beer names written on. That in itself is a great touch, a few places don't identify which beer is which. I had a Casear Augustus from Williams Brothers, a Fake Lager from Brewdog and a Witless IV from Red Willow Brewery - as you can see, there's a great range to choose from and the staff were really helpful and knowledgeable about them all. While I was looking around and supping my drinks (the Witless was the pick of the bunch, fact fans!) I noticed the menu. I knew that The Raven were offering food, but wasn't too sure what. Looking at the menu, it looked pretty nifty so I figured I'd just eat here, and I was glad I did! The food is BBQ based - low and slow smoked pork, burgers, ribs, that sort of thing. There's been an explosion of this kind of food in Glasgow recently, I perhaps lay the blame at the feet of Adam Richman and Man vs. Food (my dream job too, it has to be said) but I'm not complaining! I opted for a pulled pork burrito with a side of spicy cheesy fries, and at £9 for the two, it was a steal. They arrived quickly, the fries in a basket and the burrito served on a platter. I was given cutlery before the food arrived, and what looked like a carrying case full of sauces, salt, pepper, kitchen roll and a great sight, a wet wipe! A great thing to have when eating what is esssentially finger food! There wasn't a long wait at all for the food; The burrito was lovely, really filled to the brim and fresh - but the spicy cheesy fries were stunning. Covered in jalapenos, cheese and a smoky, spicy BBQ sauce, they were quickly devoured. I could honestly have had a second helping of those on their own. A great first impression here, not just for the great food, but for the really helpful and friendly staff, and the attention to detail that the whole place shows. It's somewhere that I can see me returning to time and time again.

Staff at the station bar in Cowcaddens told us to visir here as the guys I was with love a whiskey. Well it didn't disappoint. Don't think we could think of a name/brand that wasn't on offer here. You may wonder why I mention old lady bars, this is because The State reminds me of an old man's pub. The State is just off of Sauchiehall Street and just round the corner from the King's Theatre so this makes it a wee cheeky break from the pure madness of Sucksthelifeoutyou Street. I've been to a couple of gigs and I do prefer a more intimate gig so sound was admittedly LOUD but it was good music I was listening to. *shimmy* If you want a wee change pop round to the State and I saw they also have plenty beers if you like beer. I must say, I don't often write second reviews for places, but seeing as this is The State Bar and…read moremy last review was SIX YEARS AGO I will make amends. The reason for reviewing again, is since 2009 The State has dramatically increased the variety, quantity and quality of its real ales/craft beers, offering such an excellent selection that it was crowned Glasgow CAMRA Pub of the Year 2014. This is no mean feat as there are literally thousands of pubs stretching from Oban to Rothesay, Glasgow to Strathaven, Biggar to Airdrie all included in the voting. Fan of Fyne Ales? Oakham beers? The State has at least one beer from each brewery at any one time, being a member of each brewery's "Pubs of excellence" schemes. This also means very difficult to get and one-off beers are often launched or sold exclusively here. It's just a really great pub. And it isn't expensive either. £3.50 max for a pint, including sometimes 7% beers (which I really should stay away from but it's too damn hard given how tasty they are!). If you're not sure of what beer you fancy, ask for a wee taster and the bar staff will be happy to oblige and share their recommendations. Go there now! DO IT! PS - I almost forgot... this is like the only place in the West of Scotland that shows live cricket... if that's your thing. There's also live football on the Sky Sports screens, but it doesn't attract some of your usual footy watching crowd who are just in the pub for the "bantz". The sound is never turned up that high either, but the conversation can make this a loud pub at times!
