Wells Crab House - Spiced gin

Updating my review - with actually no significant update. There's not really anything to improve…read more This restaurant is my favourite in Wells (in Norfolk, actually). The ingredients are local, the menu is seasonal and the daily specials are well considered, fresh and all-round delightful. Though I don't drink, I understand the gin (and tonic) selection to be incredible. Whilst definitely not the cheapest place to eat locally, it is more than reasonable with the fresh, local ingredients and the skill obviously put into making them. Most recently I visited and between three of us sampled (read: devoured) some cod cheek tempura, scallops with an avocado purée, sesame tempura prawns, fish & chips and a double-serving of seafood chowder. These were mainly daily specials and so I had requested earlier in the day that they didn't run out of chowder for me. It honestly is the best thing ever. Saying that - as much as I adore chowder - the cod cheeks are amongst the best dishes I have ever tasted. The food is seasoned perfectly. The fish is so well respected in terms of being just-done and the service is so friendly and familiar without being over-bearing. I would always ALWAYS recommend it here. (new photos attached)

We went for a birthday lunch to the Wells Crab House with high expectations. Unfortunately we were…read morea bit disappointed. The setting and interior are nice enough and, in fairness, the main dish of teriyaki sea trout was tasty. However, the starter of halibut was overcooked and we hardly recognised it as halibut and we did not really feel relaxed. What is also a minus is the fact that a deposit of £30 was taken off the credit card a few hours before we arrived. Not a bad meal, but next time we'll go somewhere else.

I visited Cromer on a day trip by coach last Autumn. I was about to give-up on buying some dressed…read morecrabs to take home at the end of the day. when I found Davies fishmonger's on the way back to the coach. I went in, and the staff were wonderful. they could not have been more helpful. I bought three crabs, and they filled a plastic bag with crushed ice, wrapped the crabs in newspaper and placed them in with ice. I arrived home two hours later and enjoyed the first of the crabs. The other two were eaten over the next two days, all in perfect condition and beautifully tasty. I will certainly go there again on any future visit to Cromer .

Everything is as fresh as is possible, being brought straight off of the fishing boats just hours earlier. Cromer crabs are reputed to be the finest in the world, and I'm inclined to believe this. Dressed crabs from £2.50 upwards depending on size. Other seafood includes prawns, mussels, jellied eels, cockles, mackerel, trout, tuna, herrings, soft roe, sea bass, lobster, in fact the produce sold, reflects seasonal availability so will be constantly changing throughout the year. Friendly staff will oblige with cutting off fish-heads if requested, and service is excellent even at busiest times, there always seem to be enough to minimise any waiting. For holidaymakers and tourists who wish to buy for taking home, there is always a supply of ice and paper for wrapping everything up for a long journey.

Capatin A's - 1/2 pound burger and 1/4 pound burger. They look funny together.

The restaurant is nice and clean, however tables are a bit sticky. Burgers were fresh, but not standing out, but FRIES WERE REALLY GOOD! Maybe it's because we were the only table at a weird hour - the fries are made so fresh and just right - crispy on the outside and so fluffy on the inside! Definitely one of the better fries places.

A bunch of booths for dining, decent music (it's starting to fill up now) and funky decor. Bud is only 3.30 a pint a revelation for a Henley-ite and the waiter is friendly and helpful. Food has now turned up literally within five minutes. Let me taste and then carry onTwenty minutes later and two stone in weight. I have absolutely nothing whatsoever to complain about. That was a damn good meal, at a damn good price and probably one of the best American meals I have had in my entire life. Sublime burger cooked to perfection, absolutely smothered in chili, a mountain of fries, a mixed salad big enough to be a meal in itself and a pint of Bud. Grand total £13.95. Get in there!
