Not only did we learn the secret of how to eat garlic without painful side effects (those of you "our" age will know what I mean) but I also went back for seconds on mussels. (A first for me.) ...and thirds! Wait... what? Some of the food that I have only tolerated in the past? I couldn't get enough of it! And my favorite gazpacho? Fuggedaboudit! ...and they promised to share their recipe for their mojito ice cream. JUST WAIT. You'll love it! Photos to follow..." That's how I posted to FB upon getting home from our experience at Barcelona Slow Travel. I was eager to share that to give a sense of enthusiasm that I had for that evening! Our hosts, Christina and Guillermo, were warm, friendly, funny and eager to please. While some of the treats on their menu were not a surprise (olive plate, gherkins and pickled garlic, and gazpacho) the rest of the evening's menu was entirely dependent on what Guillermo could find FRESH at the market that morning. ...and FRESH made all the difference. Their space is intimate and inviting. After getting to know each other for a bit, each of the guests were seated around a large butcher block table and given a cutting board and a sharp knife, along with a task - from zesting limes to veining garlic to prepping mushrooms, mussels, peppers and the rest, they put us to work! Guillermo ensured that each guest was performing their task just right, while giving us the background of the dishes we were preparing, making small talk and generally making everyone feel "at home." Frankly, the next several hours passed by in a blur. No, it wasn't the wine (okay, maybe just a little bit) but it was the pleasure of the company, the work involved, and the gastronomy! The evening was a resounding SUCCESS. I would not hesitate to return there. (In fact, one of our group was there for her second time!) So if you're in Barcelona and want to understand the food and the pacing of the dining experience, be sure to check these guys out! You won't be disappointed!

Having said that, the wine we tasted was quite good as well. This is estate wine where all the grapes are from the vineyards that surround the castle. Ummmm... YES! I checked out his website and a brief description of what the evening entailed and booked him! "Join me for a cooking class in my home, welcome! Together we'll learn how to cook and eat traditional Catalan cuisine. Be prepared for an amazing culinary experience! I will pick you up at the station and we will drive home (only 4 mins uphill). We'll cook together, enjoy a beer and a snack, and after cooking have a delicious meal all together. In the summertime we cook on the roof terrace overlooking Barcelona's skyline. We can even customize our typical Catalan/ Spanish menu to your taste. We will have fun together! A unique local experience is waiting for you! See you soon!" - Ummm, who wouldn't want to try this? Our very first evening in Barcelona, we did this experience and it was perfect. We went to the meeting spot and Yves was waiting there with a smile. He was so very welcoming from the very first moment. Anyone who invites you into their home has to be lovely, right? His home was gorgeous and his family was so lovely. We met his wife and two young boys. They went to bed shortly after we arrived and we received a tour of his lovely home. The kitchen was epic and the rooftop was the perfect backdrop to our evening. We headed into the kitchen to begin dinner prep and opened some wine. He had two friends joining us as well and they were just as lovely. There were 5 of us in the kitchen and Yves directed us all so we were never in each other's way. We had some bread and spread along with some mussels in a memorable sauce to begin as we put together a salad and fresh seafood Paella. We made everything down to the fresh fish stock. It was a fabulous and rewarding experience. We also had a fresh apple dessert prepping as we finished our dinner. There was relaxing background music playing as we all chatted and cooked along side. We learned a ton about each other and our very different cultures. We truly felt like we were cooking with friends. We took all of the prepped dinner to the top of the roof where there was an open cooking area and we completed the Paella. The weather was perfect and the gorgeous Barcelona skyline was our backdrop. You couldn't have painted a better picture. We gorged on dinner and relaxed - the perfect way to enjoy our freshly made, local dinner. We joked, we laughed, we just enjoyed the company of strangers, who by the end of night became friends. It was a lovely, unique experience that I would suggest to anyone in the area whether you are visiting or are a local. Yves is a very loving host who shares his love of food in a fabulous way. Thank you, Yves! It was a true pleasure and a highlight of my entire trip.

We had a group of 22, only 19 were able to make it. Since we were late dinner we didn't get the chance to go to the market but it did not take away from the experience. I did have some issues trying to make payment, being that we were currently traveling throughout the EU and payment set off a chain of fraud alerts for my credit card, but that was my fault and not theirs. The evening was full of laughter, smiles and fun. This event will be hard to top. Since we were so large we had three chefs taking care of our group as well as their mother I believe. Tapas were provided along with unlimited beer and wine. We made sangria, seafood and vegetable paella as well as creme brulee! She apologized, we thanked her, and left expecting Airbnb to process the refund. Days later, the host falsely accused us of being rude and upsetting other guests, despite our polite interactions. He also refused the refund, claiming we chose to leave, when we left only after being told our reservation was canceled. The inconsistent communication, refusal to honor the promised refund, and false accusations made this a very disappointing experience.

The pace was perfect -- a great combination of eating, walking, touring, and photospots so just when you were getting full, you had the opportunity to have a little walk to work up an appetite for the next stop. We went to at least 5 separate eateries (although I honestly I started losing count), some of them quite historic including the famed 4 Cats cafe. The tour even vetted out the best churros and best chocolate in the city (separate businesses), and brokered a deal that enabled us to try them together! Brian was a delight and in many of the restaurants, clearly knew the staff and owners -- this was great as it made us feel like VIPs and also gave us some insight into the history of the business -- some of them had been open and family run for many years! And weirdly -- even though Brian is American-born -- I felt that to be a plus: he was able to answer some of the more "basic" questions I might have been uncomfortable asking to a local, and given his time spent living in Spain thus far, I felt like he was still able to give us a really down-to-earth, local introduction to the city. Due to the size of the group, we only went to places where they could make reservations and seat a large group in a private back room. So we didn't visit any truly hole-in-the-wall places, but all the food was good so we didn't really mind. I will say this tour is possibly better for the beginning of your visit to Spain rather than the end. My partner and I had visited San Sebastian prior to Barcelona, and so many of the foods Brian was "introducing" like boquerones and croquettes we had already enjoyed and indulged in many times before.
