When I was a kid I hated vegetables and fruit! To me, a vegetable was a pickle or corn and fruit was an apple or grapes. I remember when I was around 10 or 11 my mother took a stand and put a slice of tomato on my breakfast plate. She told me I could not go out and play with my friends until I ate that slice of tomato. Being as stubborn as Mom, I sat there at the kitchen table from 8 a.m. until the afternoon crying and refusing to eat that one miserable slice of tomato. Finally, my mother gave me a smack and threw me out of the house! That's how much I hated vegetables. Once I became an adult, I realized how nutritious and delicious they were and how important it was to eat vegetables and fruit to be healthy, and I grew to love them. One day, around 6 years ago, I saw online an advertisement for an organization and business that supports local farmers and locally grown fruits and vegetables called The Produce Box and I decided to give it a shot. It was one of the best discoveries I made food wise and I am still a devoted customer till this day. The concept is quite simple. Once a week you receive a text and email offering you the opportunity to purchase their pre-selected box or you can put together a box of your own. Most of the time I enjoy picking out my own produce. For example, this week I received 5 ears of corn, mushrooms, pineapple, cantaloupe, zucchini, tomatoes, kiwi, bananas, potatoes and oranges, grapefruit and onions. Total cost was $33 and it is delivered to my home. My delivery day is Wednesday. I always look forward for the box to arrive filled with all of my delicious choices. The produce is always plentiful and top quality. Rarely do I receive anything bruised or not tasty. Everything is just perfect and it comes in a sturdy box to keep stuff fresh until I get home. Sometimes I throw in an ice pack to keep it cool. I never compared prices to the grocery store, and I'm sure I am paying a little more for these fruits and vegetables. Flip side is they are either organic or locally grown. I love getting quality produce and I love the idea of supporting local farmers. Considering how healthy I have been since I have started receiving weekly produce from the produce box, I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I am with this arrangement. Having recently lost my dear brother, I am more conscious than ever to stay healthy. The Produce Box keeps me on track and has become a staple in my diet. I also like their flexibility. They can deliver weekly if you so choose, or you can let them know you are going to be out of town or don't need a delivery and they will simply skip that week and return the following week based on your request. There are also lots of other possible purchases like local breads, prepared dinners, etc. that I have yet to try. I know I eat and drink lots of horrible chemicals in my sugar-free and low fat foods and diet Coke. Hopefully I am offsetting the damage done a bit by my weekly consumption of fresh and delicious produce from The Produce Box. My mom would be in shock but happy to see that this morning I sliced a beautiful tomato for my breakfast. I've come a long way! read more

Amazing company. I learn so much from their newsletters about local farmers, unique varieties of produce, and even local small businesses like bakeries or other fresh food providers. Love the local meat and dairy too! I feel more connected to my community in using this service and reading the weekly newsletter. It's really cool to read the bios on the vendors and farmers, too. I have been subscribing to The Produce Box for over six years, and have enjoyed the convenience of receiving fresh products from an ever-growing menu of produce, meat, baked goods, herbs, dairy products, coffee, honey, and other fresh local items. I used to pick up my box where I worked, until a couple of years ago when I chose to start having my box delivered to my house. So much more convenient than going to a farmers market! It's so easy to choose the items I want in my box online and I like the flexibility of being able to choose how little or how much I want, or to skip a week all together. The quality is great, and it's guaranteed. If an item wasn't good you receive a credit to your account. There is a great selection of organic items each week. When I moved to my apartment, we received a coupon for The Produce Box. The company sounded great and I was excited to receive my first box. The box is hand delivered to your doorstep. They are very flexible you can even leave a cooler outside your dokr and they will place your fresh produce in there. In our first box we got corn, tomatoes, strawberries, green beans, and tangerines. One of the tomatoes and a few of the strawberries were bruised. The box also comes with a paper insert with recipes and information about each of the produce. For me the price is a little expensive. If I had more expendable income, I would be very excited to explore the various produce boxes they offer. read more

If I could give this business zero stars I would. Why? They recently marketed their company by leaving ziploc bags with a rock and a paper flyer in the driveway of every home in our community of 600+ homes (overseen by a non-profit HOA). This was purely lazy: the solicitor (ignoring "No Solicitation" signs throughout the neighborhood) just chucked these baggies into driveways, without leaving it by or attached to the front door as other firms (e.g. Domino's Pizza) do. This leaves residents with the obligation to dispose of the unsolicited marketing materials. I'm sure many of Produce Box's customers can say some nice things about them. But sloppy inconsiderate marketing like this does more harm than good. I can't recommend them based on this advertising. Hopefully some candid remarks on Yelp and other places will be a wake-up call. [end of 2015 review] UPDATE: I had tried to reach The Produce Box directly from the contact info on the flyers and Yelp when this occurred, but got zero response. But I later received a private message here on Yelp from the owner asking me to remove this review because "this is the only 1-star review we have" and an explanation that some third party working for The Produce Box was responsible. I found both these excuses unacceptable. Some unoccupied homes in our community still had these baggies in the driveway months later; The Produce Box never bothered to correct this fiasco. This service continues to take better to an even better level. You pay a small teeny tiny fee per year to be a member. (ten bucks maybe?) Then you control what you receive. In season you get an email every Friday where you pick from several different "boxes" of fresh produce. There are more choices then ever before. You can skip weeks if you want. What you get is fresh local produce of high quality delivered to your door. It doesn't get any better than this! I have my box delivered to work so I don't have to worry about how hot it is outside. While the other folks at work are eating donuts, I am admiring my box of fresh goodies. Have tried similar services, and I can tell you this one is top notch. Smaller boxes, larger boxes, heavy on fruit? Organic? You decide, pay a reasonable fee for it, and it's delivered to your door. Went online, set up account and was told it would be active in 24 hours. 3 weeks later, was told nope, high demand, and would be a couple of weeks. checked in again and was told they don't deliver to my address. We're a household of 2 and we love this service. We get a normal harvest box and just skip weeks more often because our household does not go through produce that quickly. They tend to put things like squash or potatoes - things that tend to last a little longer in each box which really helps make this worthwhile for smaller, more budget conscious households like us. I like it because I grew up eating fresh produce where my significant other had not even tried a banana until college. This forces him to try "new" produce. We try new healthy recipes more often and he's more willing to try it since it is already in the house. It gets us away from the same old frozen vegetables that used to dominate most of our meals. Overall, we spend the same amount in grocery costs with the produce box added. To put this into perspective, our costs were relatively low to begin with- $300-$400 a month total for a household of two with large appetites. What a great way to support local farmers! The Produce Box delivers fresh, local produce to your door. They operate year round (they do bring in some products for the winter from Florida so they can keep operating outside of the NC growing season). You have several boxes to choose from depending on what you want. The staff is so nice, and they recycle the boxes (you leave it outside for them to collect when they bring the next one). They also have helpful newsletters with tips on storing produce and recipes. I've heard of some small groups (e.g. 3 people in an office) going in to pool together to purchase one and split the contents each week because it can be a lot of produce for those living alone or who don't cook a lot. read more

To start- how I use TPB: I use it nearly every week to deliver mainly just produce so that I can go grocery shopping only 1x/mo. I occasionally order coffee. I don't typically order other local artisan things (unless there is a promo to try something new...) because I do work within a monthly budget. So most of my perspective comes from my experience with the produce. For deliveries, we have had an EXCELLENT experience with Lynn. She is consistent, accurate, and very kind! She loves knowing she brings healthy food to my boys every week! For quality, we are nearly always impressed by how fresh and tasty all the produce is. The produce is noticably tastier than the same thing from the grocery store and lasts significantly longer. I did have some green onions that were a little suspect a couple of weeks ago, but that was the first time in maybe a year that has happened. Typically quality is always stellar. For value, I find the prices to be slightly more than the NC farmers market (I live in Raleigh, 3 miles from the farmers market.) but choose to use TPB instead because of the convenience of having it delivered. (I have a 2 year old and 1 year old- it's an ordeal to take them anywhere). Price is generally the thing that keeps people I know from joining TPB (I tell people about it all the time), but we make it work for us by grocery shopping only 1x/mo at Aldi, so it gives us a little more room in our food budget. This does not work for everyone though. I do miss having the "blemished/bargain" box or items. I used to order those every week when TPB still had them and it would help offset the higher cost of the produce as well as allow me to buy more since I was saving on the blemished items. I'd love to see those come back! For variety, this is where I feel TPB beats the farmers market. Since TPB sources from more than just NC I often find more produce options on TPB. We appreciate that because we have toddlers who like specific fruits and veggies- wide produce options for me are great! For service, you guys are awesome!! Everyone I've had contact with at TPB is responsive, considerate, passionate about eating healthy and local farming, and always able to resolve issues or answer questions. Thanks for that! I had a little hiccup with the Thanksgiving and Christmas pre-ordering- it was the first time TPB had done that and I think there was a little confusion around it which lead to some confusion for me. But it didn't cause major issues and was an anomaly as far as the quality and accuracy of service! You guys are great and we love getting our box every week! read more

Beautiful & varied produce. Home delivery. Supporting NC farmers. Amazing customer service. Great prices. Um, Produce Box, where have you been all my life? I'm not quite sure how I missed this service, but so far we have been really happy with our membership. It's got the advantages of a CSA without the upfront cost & commitment. Also, instead of supporting a single farmer, you are supporting a network of NC farmers & food producers. A little like going to the farmers market, but delivered to your door step. I was new to this kind of service, so if you've never heard of it, here's how it works. The Produce Box delivers produce and specialty food items from North Carolina growers and producers. Each week, several fruit & veg variety boxes are offered on their website for $18-24. Each weekend, you make your selection (or opt out for the week), then your produce shows up on your doorstep on the weekly delivery day for your neighborhood. The quality of the produce is wonderful, and each week, there is a good variety of seasonal items in every box. So far, all my fruit & veggie boxes have elicited a gasp of delight when I open them! In addition to produce, they offer weekly "add-ons" of locally baked breads from La Farm (among others), jams, candied nuts, cookies, granola...different offerings each week. In the add-ons section, there are also extra amounts of produce. Say you looooove corn, and those 4 ears in your weekly box aren't enough. You can add an extra portion for a few bucks. Finally, if the pre-set box you chose has something you hate, you have the option to swap out 1 thing for a "surprise" item chosen by the PB staff. Customer service is great! The service includes weekly emails to remind you to either order your box or opt out for that week. PB staff contact their new and continuing customers to make sure they are happy. If you get a piece of produce that is not up to snuff, they bring you a replacement very quickly. Their website is really easy to use, but if you have a question, your emails will be answered (quickly) by a real person. So, if you don't make it out to the farmers market as often as you like, check out the produce box. Well it sure does appear as if everything great that can be said about The Produce Box has been said. Makes it easier for me I guess. Fresh fruits & veggies delivered right to your door. I love it. When I first learned about these local produce delivery businesses in the N&O I immediately called one those services. I won't name that competitor but suffice to say they were unable to accommodate me and they were just a tad attitudinal to boot. I guess it was fate 'cause I then contacted TPB and it's been happy times & unicorns since then. Every now & then a heretofore untried vegetable has been part of my order. Even though I haven't a clue as to how to prepare said vegetable, TPB also provides flyers with not only a reprint of the different box contents but also storage suggestions and recipes. Whew! I just finished my first year of being a member of the Produce Box and I totally agree with Nadeen in that it's a great and viable option for those of you not wanting to fork over a share or half share amount for a standard CSA. The part I love the most is that they deliver. I don't have to go to some central location and plan my day around the pick up or drop off of my produce. Instead I arrive home, and the cooler I leave out is filled with all the items that were stated. If they run out of items, or they don't meet your community managers quality control, you either get a replacement item substituted in the box, or you get a voucher stating what the problem is and you just tally your missed items on your subsequent weeks orders. Another think I like about this business model is the ability to skip a week and not get charged. You opt out on any week you are either unavailable, not interested or if you want to save some coin that week. I look forward to continuing my membership with The Produce Box and more so helping support a local farm and a local business. read more

I would not recommend this service to anyone. I started a new job with another company and notified The Produce Box by phone and in writing (via email) that I wanted the service stopped and I could not log into my account online because it was linked to my old employer's email account and I no longer had access. It took them 3 weeks to stop drafting my account and I only received one produce box out of 3 drafts. They said we are not suppose to cancel your account, well, if you can't access it and the Produce Box has it in writing, I don't understand why not. I guarantee you if they had not been paid I would not receive a box. When they have access to your account, that gives them to much freedom. NEVER AGAIN....BEWARE..... And they are RUDE to you when you want to cancel the service. read more

Overpriced and poor choice of items. The delivery is reliable and the quality itself is fine, nothing outstanding though. I put them on hold last year and was surprised to find a "your delivery is on the way" email mssg without giving one the option to actually order it or not. In the basket there were 4 types of Lettuce, 5 tangerines, a bag with 5 potatoes for $30.00; thanks but NO THANKS. A very cool idea but they need to work on it. read more

The Produce Box allows me to order just what I need, budget better, while still supporting local farmers and providing healthy food for my small family. $18 upfront is nothing for a CSA and especially not for one that gives you options each week for what produce you'd like delivered to your doorstep. You pay by the box ($23 for a large, $18 for a small) and it's a lot of food, no matter which size you get. You can skip a week for any reason as long as you let them know by Sunday night. Everything's always fresh and if it's not (which has yet to happen to me), you can get replacements. There are swaps if there's a particular item that you don't like or doesn't fit into your meal plan. There's always the option to add on more items, especially prepared goods, such as preserves and breads from Great Harvest Bakery. Definitely worth doing and I will be continuing this on into the coming year. read more

I've been using The Produce Box for over a year now and it has changed what we eat and how we think about food! Having fresh veggies and fruit delivered weekly has gotten us to think more about what we eat. it is such an easy way to be sure we include veggies in our diet and now it is second nature. The different sizes and choices of boxes makes it so easy, plus the option to swap out one item is great...sometimes we are just over eating more cucumbers :). Granted, nothing is perfect, but these guys are pretty darn close. I have been getting a weekly box since Feb '14 (9 months now). I should also mention that this is not the first local produce delivery company I have tried. It is the one I am sticking with. I find the quantities, selection, and quality of produce to be outstanding. For the price, it is far better food than what I would get at the grocery store and I have the added "feel good factor" from knowing that my family is helping local farmers and low income families (which you can read about on their site). Buying real, farm fresh food, often requires a few extra minutes prep time in the kitchen (compared to cutting open a bag of frozen veggies, which is what I used to do) and the willingness to be flexible and sometimes creative. The Produce Box does a great job of supporting its customers in this, by supplying weekly recipe ideas, a "how to best store" each type of produce guide, and references on Pinterest and Facebook for more inspiration. It's worth the effort. I am not sure which I appreciate more, the eating of my fresh TPB food, or the learning that I have experienced since joining. The newsletter has opened my eyes to better understand how farming works, I have learned tons about how to better care for my produce, as well as eating foods I had never tried before. It has been a wonderful experience for my family. For the record, I work outside the home and cook for my family of five every night, so I don't have all day to cook, but TPB has helped me learn to make much more nutritious meals. read more

Absolutely LOVE Fridays! Why - it's like Christmas each week when my Produce Box is delivered!! Fresh produce arrives at my doorstep. And the menu for the next week comes out! So fun to see what is being offered! I plan my menu based on the produce (and artisan items) I order in each box. I have learned so much of what grows in NC! It has been great to try new items as well! And the artisan items are wonderful! I have discovered my favorite granola - thank you Huntington Provision Co - pimento cheese, empanadas, and so much more! Often we make our own Market Box as well adding produce, meats, cheeses and breads in our own custom box. Love that option! read more

I hate shopping for groceries so last week I signed up for The Produce Box. I received my first delivery today. I have to say it seemed entirely too easy to sign up for and the price was very reasonable. I ordered Box A and received 1 large bunch of collards, 2 full heads of red leaf lettuce, 2 large cucumbers, 1 bunch of radishes, 1 container of strawberries, a bunch of cilantro, and 1 container of tomatoes. The produce all looks really great. I haven't tried everything yet, obviously but I am snacking on the fresh, sweet, juicy strawberries as I type this. Yummy! When I buy strawberries at the grocery store I have to add sugar to make them sweet enoguh to eat. These do not need any sugar. I grew up with big gardens so I am used to eating really fresh veggies. I am not able to have a garden at the moment so this was the next best thing. It was delivered straight to my door, or actually my back deck while I was at work. My delivery person put all of the produce into the cooler that I had placed out there for that purpose. I wish I had known about this service earlier!! And before anyone asks, I am in no way, shape, or form related to the people who own The Produce Box. I do not work for them. I have never even met them. I LOVE the idea, unfortunately the implementation just isn't there, with a vegan in our household its just too little for too much. Not to metion, they have left off things from our order before and have giving us rotten food, which is understandable being "fresh"but not when we pay 30 to 40 dollars and just get a head of lettuce, rotten radishes and cabbage. As the Produce Box's season winds down, I have to give it a great review. Last year I tried to get on as a member after the N&O wrote an article about it but they didn't have enough drivers. I was delighted when I got an e-mail in March telling me that they had a driver for my route and I would start to receive Produce in April. I think there is a $20.00 joining fee. As mentioned before you get to choose which box of produce that you would like on Friday. Sunday night you are billed and on Weds or Thursday you would get your box of produce. When the weather heats up you leave a cooler out to keep those veggies and fruits fresh. I like the choices of boxes that they provided. There was usually at least one that had what i wanted. You also get a newsletter with recipes for some of the produce. It was an opportunity to try veggies that I normally wouldn't pick at the grocery store like collards, sprite melons, and acorn squash. But they ended up all good. My kids loved opening the box to see what was inside. You also have to opportunity to get add ons. My neighbors loved it when I ordered the extra jalapeno box and made a ton of cheese stuffed jalapenos. It's a great way to support local farmers and get fresh veggies delivered to your door. read more

You know all those reasons that keep you from signing up with a CSA? TPB has a solution for each one of them! I spent hours researching different options and was suffering from paralysis by analysis until I found TPB. I love each item that comes to me every week because the standard boxes usually have exactly what I want and if they don't I can customize. I follow the instructions for optimal storage which extends the life remarkably (compared to my old method of cramming everything into the produce drawer and hoping for the best), and I swear there's a mindreader on staff, the customer service is that good! Finally, if you're a shopaholic and you like to come home to see a brown box on your porch, this is a healthy way to support local farmers and get that little hit of adrenaline when you pull in the drive:) read more

The quality is great (& when it wasn't once, my neighborhood coordinator immediately brought over generous replacements--which can happen--it's fresh real produce!), the diversity of the choices (given the obvious restrictions of the natural growing seasons) is wonderful, & I find the prices for home delivery quite reasonable. My young family is eating better than ever because of TPB & I LOVE being able to support local agricultural & business so easily! I highly recommend it to everyone I know. read more

I love this service! I live in a very rural area, and ironically, do not have much to choose from. Enter TPB! They deliver to my work, and I love the options, the fact the produce was picked that week, and that I'm buying local. I've tried new things (who knew I liked Swiss Chard?!?), and if it's something I know I don't like, I swap it out. Totally bummed. Read rave reviews and friends bragged and bragged about this service. Paid my $20 subscription fee and another $23 for a box! Was pumped to read that the "mini" box I chose had all of our favorite produce. When it arrived Friday, I heard my husband giggling on the front porch. When I asked what was so funny, he yelled "HOW much did you pay for this?!?!" He was holding a small box. We received 2 sweet potatoes, 2 cucumbers, 2 zucchini, a box of strawberries and an almost rotten head of lettuce. We added up what we spend at our local farmer's market and realized we had spent 3 times what we would have had we gone to the brick and mortar market and bought 4-5 pieces of each fruit/veggie. If you are too busy to shop and have extra money, this is probably a great service for you. But for our family it was way overpriced and disappointing. I canceled my service and am now out $43 for $5 in produce. read more
