This review is for the restaurant, not the accommodations (we stayed in the lofts and they were lovely. No complaints.) After making a reservation in early May for a visit in late June, we showed up on time at 7:15 on June 22. It was a busy night. We were greeted by the manager and were told we would be sitting upstairs, they just needed to clear off the table, and to please have a seat at the bar in the meantime. We waited....and waited. She saw us still sitting there, then asked a server nearby if he had a chance to clear off the table upstairs yet. He said he hadn't had much time to do anything, and that was that. We waited some more. The bartender eventually asked us if we wanted anything. Although there was a bottle of Aperol on the shelf behind the bar, the bartender didn't know what an Aperol Spritz was. It was clear there was no point in asking if she could make one. After seeing the manager make a glass if sangria with lots of diced fruit, red wine, cranberry juice and club soda, we decided to get a pitcher of the rosé sangria. The bartender put one slice of apple and one slice of orange in a pitcher, dumped in about half a bottle of rosé and filled the rest of it with 7up. This is not Sangria. Sangria has wine, fruit, brandy, and sometimes juice. This was pop and wine. For $28! Why the lack of quality control? Then we waited some more but said nothing. The manager saw we were still there and shrugged her shoulders and said "I'm doing the best I can, ladies. The table is just paying, hopefully they leave soon," in way that said "don't blame me". This was confusing because we were under the impression our table just needed cleaning when we showed up for our reservation...on time....which we had made more than a month ago. If you know you have a reservation coming at a certain time, you better make sure the prior guests are gone by that time. We waited some more while the manager avoided making any more eye contact with us. We were seated 45 minutes later at 8pm, at a completely different table on the bottom level. We were told by the manager a table was ready and we could go to it. She didn't take us to it. There was no acknowledgment that we waited so long, no apology, no offer to make it up to us whatsoever, which any decent place would do in order to provide good customer service. I've been offered apologies and comped menu items for far less. And to be clear, we did not complain. No one in our party is the type to put up a fuss, so there was absolutely no bad behaviour on our part to warrant the lack of customer service. Then we ordered our food. The dinner menu (which is apparently "new") is strangely dated and uninspired compared to the lovely, modern atmosphere of the space itself. We started with the calamari. It was good. Then we waited a long time for our mains, which were all the same - the seafood medley for $29. It was recommended by our server, who described the dish and said it was topped with a nice, cheesy cracker. I had hopes of savoury, garlicky, buttery seafood. What we got was seafood on a skillet, which was very possibly missing the garlic butter altogether. It had zero flavour. There was a dry piece of lobster sitting loose on top of it all...with crushed up Goldfish crackers all over it. That's right - store-bought toddler food was thrown on fresh Atlantic seafood and they charged $29 a plate. If it was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, it wasn't pulled off well at all. The rice pilaf (again, very dated) tasted heavily of thyme and the vegetables tasted like they were boiled for a 1970s Sunday dinner. There was really no point to any of it. None of us could finish our meals and it seemed wrong to have to pay through the roof for any part of the experience. I would like to say that our server was pleasant and likely had no idea we had been waiting so long. What we were extremely disappointed with was the lack of acknowledgment or apology from the manager, who knew they were not doing well that night. It would have gone a long way. We would not have felt compelled to write this review had she apologized or checked in with us. In retrospect we wish we had said something at the time, so that's on us - but the person in charge knew they messed up with our table and didn't acknowledge it. The bad food and drinks on top of it made for a disappointing experience all around. We cannot recommend The Quarterdeck Grill. Definitely stay there - the lofts are great! But order in from somewhere else or head down the road to Seaside Seafoods - we didn't try it but guaranteed it will be better bang for your buck! read more
