Lane's Privateer Inn is a hotel, but it also has an attached restaurant and my husband and I had dinner there recently and it was great. I had the Lobster Roll ($25) which came with fries and a salad (I requested the dressing on the side). My husband had the Mersey Scallops ($24) and these came with roasted potatoes and vegetables. My lobster roll was delicious. It was real lobster mixed with tiny pieces of celery and mayo. It also had some mixed greens in it. In Ottawa, where I'm from, "Lobster Rolls" sometimes have cheap fillers like fake crab mixed in - which is sacrilege, I know, but it happens, so I was thrilled that that did not happen here. Mind you, I fully expect any self-respecting restaurant in the Maritimes to make good Lobster Rolls. Lane's Privateer Inn did not disappoint. I was also glad to see that the side salad was a real spring mix/mesclun mix salad and not iceberg or romaine lettuce. However, the salad was a little on the small side. It had 1 grape tomato cut in half and some grated carrots. It was only a few mouthfuls. The dressing on the side was a light citrus vinaigrette that I enjoyed. The fries were ok. They were a bit on the mealy side, but the outside was crispy at least. My husband enjoyed his meal. He got 6 large scallops, some new potatoes, carrots and broccoli. He gave me a scallop and it was very tasty. We got some complimentary biscuits to start our meal. They were slightly sweet. I thought they were just ok, but my husband really liked them. I gave him three-quarters of mine. I like that they give you a glass bottle of water and leave it at your table. I noticed that each table had a different shaped bottle which I thought was cool. My husband also got a flight of 4 beers for $8. Each beer was 4oz each. He got to chose the beers individually from a list of about 12 beers. All the beers were brewed in Nova Scotia. Service was very friendly and courteous. The ambiance is cool and feels like an old fashioned inn. There's free parking in their private parking lot. read more

We stumbled upon Lane's Privateer Inn last summer when we decided to go further south than we've been while touring the Lighthouse Route and beyond. It's a lovely old inn with 27 rooms, each furnished with antiques and each one different to the next. Ours had a claw foot tub that was perfect for pampering. Especially since there were all sorts of wonderful smelling soaps and lotions to go along. But the Inn had more surprises in store for us. The dining rooms - yes, more than one were again furnished from an older, simpler time and the food was delicious. A lobster club sandwich for me and some crispy coated scallops for him...okay, we shared everything and it was all excellent. Next surprise, was the bookstore. We actually ate our lunch in it. Wonderful selections of Canadiana - literature, history and for me...local cookbooks. Feasting for tummy and mind. Perfect! And last, but not least for the foodie in me...the gourmet gift shop with everything from serving pieces to ingredients. My review here is of the restaurant. We stopped off on here for a lunch after working in the area. The Inn is a beautiful country restaurant that is in an old historic feeling building. Really charming and you get the feeling it's down home country cooking. The menu has a solid selection of salads, sharing plates, sandwiches, local seafood dishes and principal dishes. Really something for everyone. Also a solid cocktail and drink menu if you care to get your drink on! I had selected the seafood chowder. This came in a generous serving with fresh biscuits. The biscuits were warm and freshly baked. Really awesome here. The Seafood chowder was in a thick creamy broth! Rich seafood flavour with potatoes and a mix of scallops, haddock and lobster. It wasn't the most generous with seafood but was enough to keep me filled up for lunch! It was rich! I'd like to try other things on the menu as it looked like there some solid other selections. Staying at White Point and the menu was limited and so we drove over to Privateers to check it out. Service was very good. My wife had the Irish Stew with Lamb and she raved about it. I had the local sausage burger with a side of fresh haddock at the servers suggestion. The fish was the best ever and the burger was perfect! We WILL be back read more

I visited the restaurant recently for supper with a couple of family members. The dining room is bright and pleasant, especially later in the afternoon. We shared a plate of nachos which were great, one of the sauces in particular which I forgot to ask the server about was unexpected and amazing. For my main I had a bowl of haddock chowder, which was really tasty and comforting and full of generous chunks of fish. It came with an apparently housemade tea biscuit which I could have eaten 10 more of, it was so good. My companions also enjoyed their meals, haddock with veggies for one and a salad for the other. Service was great. I will look forward to visiting the restaurant next time I'm in the area. read more

This is by far the best clams I've tasted. Even the haddock was fresh. And don't get me started on the hand cut fries - they were fantastic too. We just got back from Kejim seaside adjunct and were undecided as to where to go for lunch. We never expected that little Liverpool to have Privateer Inn which offers great local food with great view of the river and atmosphere. At first we were a little skeptical because the place was empty. But then it was 4.00 pm, so you could expect the quietness of course. Given the waitresses' recommendation we were up for the clams and haddock because we were told that were freshly caught. It should be because the fisheries processing plant was just across the street. And since it was summer we had the whole patio deck to ourselves that overlooks the river. I suppose if you are around the area and in need of something to munch, don't give this place a miss like we almost did. read more

The Inn: The room was clean and up-to-date (a nice surprise after finding the nearby B&B I had originally booked to be quite filthy). The hardwood flooring is nice--no musty carpet odours. The Restaurant: Updated, tasteful decor. Very friendly service. The food here is amazing. I would've eaten here more if they had been open Sunday night and Monday morning. Live music on certain evenings. The fish and chips are truly delicious--among the best I've ever had. I peeked into the kitchen and it was very clean. The patio is beautiful place to eat on a nice day. It's nice and secluded but you can see the water. The spinach salad with chicken was very good and the cheese and meat board was nicely presented. The sausage burger was good and unusual with the sausage and Gouda cheese combination. I recommend this place for sure. And service was nice and fast. read more

As a native New Yorker traversing Nova Scotia for the first time, this place was an absolute treat to stumble across. The service was EXCELLENT. The wait between each course was a bit long (the place was packed) but our waitress was nothing short of sweet and apologetic for the wait time. She was also extremely personable, asking my boyfriend and I where we were from, and seemed genuinely excited to hear all about New York. It was wonderful chatting with her while we waited for our food. The food was also fantastic! I have made it a mission to eat poutine as much as I can while in Canada since it's mostly absent in New York, and out of the three poutine dishes I've had so far, the Privateer's was by far the most scrumptious. The french fries were crispy and not at all soggy from the gravy. The gravy itself was a deep brown color, thick and hearty. And the cheese curds were chewy and flavorful! I may have dreams about their poutine tonight...I definitely recommend it as an appetizer! For my entree I had the pan seared scallops with a mango chutney and it was delectable. The scallops were cooked to perfection and had a nice brown searing on both sides. They were also thick and the meal was very filling. The mango chutney was also delicious and complimented the scallops wonderfully. The ambiance was also very nice. In New York City, it is rare to make conversation with a table near to you, but my boyfriend and I easily struck up a nice conversation with the family sitting behind us. The dining room is overall very cozy, homey and comfortable. My boyfriend and I were were also seated by a rack of books which easily kept us entertained during the wait between courses. I travelled to Liverpool on the first day of Fall, partially to take some photos of a couple of Royal Canadian Navy ships recently towed there for scrapping and partially to partake of the Privateer Inn's incredible fish and chips. I'm not sure which of the two was the motivating factor, but either way, the fish and chips were fantastic as always. The fries are amongst the best you'll find in Nova Scotia, but the fish...the fish is heavenly. If there is fried fish in heaven (and why wouldn't there be-surely we won't gain weight there!) it will be prepared just like this. I love the relaxed atmosphere at Lane's. My server Steven was as perfect as the food; friendly, efficient and cheerful. It doesn't get any better than this. I've been to Lane's four times for post-race brunch on the Privateer 5-Miler weekend. Nothing like a run along the Mersey River to build an appetite. For those of you who do run in the race, take your race bib with you to get a free mimosa. Nice! The fisherman's breakfast should fill you up. Eggs, beans, fish cakes, toast, bacon. Lots of other egg-y options, all good. Lunch choices are wide-ranging from chowder to a burger, to fish & chips, to salads. The chowder is simple: haddock, lobster, potatoes and cream, seasoned just right. The burger is a hand-formed patty of local beef that comes with ketchup, mustard, relish, tomato, lettuce, and onion. Cheese optional. The Mediterranean salad is a nice, savoury blend of marinated vegetables and capers over a bed of greenery. The spinach salad with goat cheese and grapefruit is a refreshingly tart choice. The coffee's good and you can buy a pound of it on your way out. The prices are all very reasonable. If you're in Liverpool, make this a destination! read more

Wish we had stayed here instead of at White Point (terrible place). Had dinner in Privateer restaurant and wait staff were excellent. They were busy and we had to wait a bit but they were extremely accommodating of my food allergies (which White Point restaurant was not). So friendly too. Food very good. read more
