Its name came from Clemens de Scharpenhamm, the owner of the original manor house that was located here. A later owner, Captain Philemon Pownoll,who was a high seas adventurer, made his name in 1762 by capturing a Spanish treasure galleon. With the wealth he secured from this haul, the Captain appointed an architect Sir Robert Taylor to design a new mansion & lovely gardens. These days all sorts of cultural activiies take place here;the view is breathtaking across the river Dart. The interior has a famous cantilevered staircase, matched only in beauty by the much larger one at the National Liberal Club in London. The mediaeval Hall & gardens play host to a Festival of Literature in July : Ways With Words & to a month of classical music in August : The Dartington Music Fesitval. I've seen such greats as Stravinsky strolling the lanes around the Hall in August.It is a simple pleasure of mine to take a blanket & a good bottle of wine & sit with a friend outside the Hall listening to marvellous music on a summer evening. There are 3 huge car parks & 3 buses a day Station is Totnes, 3 hours from London Paddington. It's July and the Way with words literary festival is on, a middle class festival of delight but definitely worth checking out if you are here then for talks, events and pop up food spots.

In my opinion, it's one of the best places to go for 2nd hand books. Plymouth City Centre offers many opportunities to grab yourself some nice books, but this place has to be the one to go to.

This shop also stocks new jewellery and woolly hats etc that I presume are made by patrons of the charity or local people but are of a very high standard and would make a perfect little gift for someone!! This is well worth a look if you ever pass this point of town.

Whilst the menu is limited, this is a great place for lunch or a really gorgeous slice of cake and a coffee. With views out across the farmland and a rustic canteen feel about the place you imagine Hugh Fearlessly-eats-it-all will pop in at any moment! There's a feel good factor about the cafe - I hope they build on this. Nothing pretentious, just local produce cooked well. I would like to see more on thier specials board. The large full English was great, especially the White pudding. More expensive than anywhere else, but value for money becuase it was really quality meat. Only dissapointment was the breakfast comes with a hot drink and when we asked to swap it for a glass of juice, we had to pay about 80p extra..... Hate it when places do that! Would certainly reccomend this cafe to everyone.
