There was coffee cake for afternoon tea when I got there. The porch is the best part of this place. It overlooks the mountain with a great view of the water and forests below. Breakfast was nice since it came with avocado, cut papaya, a piece of breakfast cake and smoothie as well as tea/coffee. I did like meeting the geckos that look like the GEICO gecko during breakfast who were wanting fruit. Cons: there's no AC. Also I was woken up by I think a rooster at 5 am. They do try to space out people getting breakfast so you can't rush in at 730 am for food.

Roads are severely dark that you cannot differentiate between driving/reversing onto road or out to sea *yikes*. Once you finally arrive at your destination, keep on driving up the hill until you reach the end. Don't forget, it is crazy dark outside, don't be alarmed by the sounds of nature. You'll park to the side next to the other 4 cars by the garage (not into it) and quietly find directions on a pin with your name on it. Come quietly inside as you make your way to the room. If you survive the night (which, you will), you'll find yourself on what looks like heaven; beautiful oceanview windows overlooking the bay. When you come down, you'll be greeted by the sweetest angel, Hannah. You'll find her in the kitchen in the morning making an all you can eat breakfast. Don't be rude! Say hello, grab a coffee, make your way to the patio and find a table. Hannah will let you know when all is ready based on first-out on the patio. When asked what was my favorite meal in Hawaii, hands down, I say Hannah's breakfast. She made delicious Banana Nut Waffles topped with macadamia nuts tossed in coconut oil and syrup. In addition, she's boiled eggs, cooked turkey bacon, and has sliced up fresh tropical fruits. Don't forget to try her freshly made smoothies made with guava YUMMMM!!!

A pleasant and comfortable camping experience on the Big Island…read more As a solo woman, I spent 9 nights in the Jungle Canopy at Gingerhill Farm Retreat in April 2026. I had an excellent stay, although I am used to camping, and feel that having a camping mindset is required for staying here. Yes, the chorus of frogs are very loud as soon as it's dark, and you can hear roosters in the distance in the morning along with bird songs. However, I enjoyed the noises and am an early riser. The Jungle Canopy is located close to the private residence, and I experienced little human noise. There was one nighttime rain and no leaks. The screened-in bedroom is functional, and the bed has a good (firm) mattress. The sink and toilet, screened off and behind the bed, are nice to have in this enlarged tent. The shower is a few feet outside the tented bedroom/kitchen, and is open to the sky (cool to look up at the tree canopy). The shower is very nice, and the water gets hot. There is no door, but the only way you can be seen is from the Jungle Canopy tent itself (you can hang a sarong if you needed more privacy). They provide face clothes and towels, two worn beach towels, as well as family-size liquid hand soap, shampoo and conditioner (decent quality). The kitchen, in front of the screened bedroom, also under a canopy, has everything you need: pots and pans (including a few that are stainless steel), a good size fridge with a small enclosed freezer (with 2 freezer packs), a sink with dish soap, etc. They provide a Berkey-like water filter carboy, a stainless-steel kettle to boil water, as well as coffee beans, a grinder, and French-press. There is a small table with two chairs where you can look at beautiful tropical plants. The only bummer is that the hot plate to cook food and boil the kettle can be slow to heat, especially if there is a slight breeze. Once the propane tank emptied while I was cooking breakfast and I had to text to ask for a replacement, however, someone came over right away and I was able to resume cooking. Like camping, you are responsible for taking out your own trash to communal cans located a fairly short distance away. You can't put any toilet paper down the toilet, so all paper used for #1 and #2 needs to go into a plastic-bag-lined trash can and you remove and dump. They removed the compost. Recommendations to Gingerhill: provide more plastic bags for trash, more toilet paper (I had to ask), and offer a larger compost bucket as it filled too quickly. Also, one day I came back in the afternoon and found the gate code didn't work. I texted and called and fairly soon someone told me that they changed the code, but didn't notify me. Next time they change the code they should text all visitors staying at the farm the new code. So, in all, I would give a 9/10 ranking, especially given the cost compared to other accommodations, and the tropical farm experience. FYI, there is snorkeling gear that you can use that is located next to the Sunset Cottage.

I'm constantly planning my next trip back. These are serious regrets that I will have to discuss with Lee and Svetlana during my next visit. They work incredibly hard to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Think of this stay as staying with your aunt and uncle. They will feed you, help you, and make you feel so loved. Breakfast is too good to be true. Everything Svetlana makes is a long journey that arrives to your plate casually like it's no big deal. Her macadamia nut butter will haunt my dreams. The Kohola Room has the breath-taking room. Sunsets while tucked into the comfortable framed bed is a luxury I cannot describe. The drive up to the house is rough but that's the only tough part of this stay. You'll be on a farm in Hawaii--that's the cool part. You will hear birds, frogs, and the cow songs. Skip the boring resort stay and enjoy the real beauty of Big Island.

Annie also makes us all very uncomfortable as she will continually get in your space to clean and as stated, accuse you of ridiculous things. I genuinely don't know why she is in the hospitality business if she doesn't like people. I'm also pretty sure she locked our shower because we took too many despite being a company of 14. There is a Hawaii Coffee company HiCO shop across the street, so great breakfast/lunch eats and COFFEE literally across the road. Great if staying only one night, and not wanting to go to the grocery or use the excellent kitchen at the hostel. Also, a sort of mini-mart 7/11-ish kind of store for snacks and microwave dinner or beer/wine/ice cream.

The first warning was turning up a road that lacked Hawaiian heritage in name. I booked it for a couple reasons: because we heard the view was gorgeous, and because I heard they served breakfast from their own farm. Both of these things are indeed true, and it was definitely worth the stay. The couple running the place are extremely friendly, accommodating, and full of suggestions. The Crow's Nest has a small private second-floor balcony that was just as great of a place to sit and eat poke and watch the sunset as I figured it would be (the view from bed wasn't bad, either). The bed was pretty comfortable, and there was plenty of space to space to spread out our stuff. And yes, the breakfast was unmissable each morning - great coffee brewed from their own coffee beans, wonderful avocado toast from their own fresh avocados (everyone thinks of California when they think of avocados, but having been to Hawaii now, I don't know why - the avocados in Hawaii were just the *best*), and all manner of fresh fruit (I don't think I'd ever had perfectly ripe, fresh papaya before, that was a highlight). They were happy to customize them a bit to our tastes, too. I even ended up taking a thermos of their coffee for the road, the day we left (I just asked for one last cup on the way out, they offered to fill a container. It was appreciated - it's great coffee!) The road to their place the first time was definitely as nerve-wracking as we expected it to be from other reviews... there was one point, with recent rain having clearly done a bit of a number on the already very rural-looking road, that it wasn't entirely clear if we had just accidentally started off-roading... but no, it was just a torn-up road with an impressively steep dip. The SUV we had no choice but to rent in Hilo handled it fine, but we were glad we weren't in a smaller vehicle. Once we knew where we were going, it was fine, even at night, but I agree with them that you don't want to *get* here at night. I would also comment, this does absolutely feel like you're staying as a guest in someone's house, rather than the relative anonymity and privacy of a larger establishment, in terms of feeling like we should be relatively quiet so our hosts or other guests didn't hear everything we were doing (also that we needed to remember to take our shoes off outside; as per request.) Definitely worth it for everything I mentioned above, though.
