Manager and volunteer are super overbearing and try to control everything you do. My research team was trying to do our work and we had two overhead lights on. Sally decided that we didn't need to use an overhead light on the porch and shut it off. She said "you guys have enough light from your computer screens anyway." We were also accused of not putting our dishes away when there were several witnesses who watched us do so. Annie also makes us all very uncomfortable as she will continually get in your space to clean and as stated, accuse you of ridiculous things. I genuinely don't know why she is in the hospitality business if she doesn't like people. I'm also pretty sure she locked our shower because we took too many despite being a company of 14. Oh and there's roaches/roach crap ON THE BEDS and in the kitchen, mice in the rooms, and ants crawled into my friends bed and got into her meds. I get it's Hawaii but this is ridiculous. On the surface level it's charming but it's infested. If you don't telepathically read Annie's mind that you need to pay 50% upfront, you're gonna get the threat of the police called on you. Wonderful, welcoming hostel. This is a traveler's hostel, and the staff are good at their work, and very welcoming to all visitors to the islands. One won't find locals or homeless, like one can find in other west coast towns. NOTES: There is a snorkel rental place down the road under 2 miles, and it rents kayaks, too. Kona Boys Kayak. There is NOT a rental shop on site(regardless of what other reviews say). a staff person lent me a mask and snorkel day one, said" its not a great one", but it was awesome to use in the water at the bottom of Captain Cook Trail (which is walking distance to the hostel front door). There is a Hawaii Coffee company HiCO shop across the street, so great breakfast/lunch eats and COFFEE literally across the road. Great if staying only one night, and not wanting to go to the grocery or use the excellent kitchen at the hostel. Also, a sort of mini-mart 7/11-ish kind of store for snacks and microwave dinner or beer/wine/ice cream. read more

I had a last minute booking and I am super grateful to Sally for being so welcoming and accommodating in getting me checked in and settled. This place is such a beautiful and spacious hostel that is in higher elevation than their other location in Kona Town, so the panoramic views of the ocean and sunsets are amazing! Lots of places to hang out outdoors, and covered spaces as well incase it rains. My room and the whole place was very neat and tidy and clean and thoughtfully laid out. There is a coffee shop across the street as well as a small convenience store. Within a short driving distance are various eateries and a grocery store. I had a great time there and would definitely recommend this place to anyone. read more

Rented snorkel gear from this place because it was the only one open nearest two step beach. I should've kept driving to Snorkel Bob's. Very unprofessional. The equipment was very low grade for what we paid... If you're planning on renting from this bruja, make sure you are planning on returning the equipment promptly on time or else!! Seriously... returned it a couple days late ended up paying double, but not before she spammed my phone with calls and texts saying she was "cursing" me for taking advantage of her business. 2 years later, my life has gone to hell after that trip. Such a wonderful place. Lots of great covered spaces to hang out and view the ocean and the sunsets. Kitchen has lots of space and all the utensils one needs to cook (and save $ by not eating out all the time). I came without a car, and the staff at the Hostel connected me to others who would make it easy for me to jump in with them to do fun activities. I stayed in the 4-bed dorm for females, and saw a private room- VERY NICE, both options. Although Uber and Lyft do work here in HI, the owner, Annie, connected me to someone staying at the Hostel for a ride to airport at less cost than uber....and she showed me the sights on the way through town. Lovely. Coffee Shop directly across the street (but free coffee at the Hostel each morning), HiCO made great avo-toast and smoothies, and pastries. Nice little mini-mart within sight of the Hostel, fo last minute snacks and drinks. I will definitely share this place with friends looking for nice affordable space on West side Hawaii. I stayed here in the middle of March and somehow got a whole room to myself - the 3 other beds were unoccupied. The hostel has a lot of (outdoor and covered) hangout spaces with great views of the ocean - if it's clear. Make sure you arrive at a reasonable time or get in touch beforehand, the office is not open later at night. Showers are also locked at 10 I think. Otherwise, pretty standard hostel. This place is a decent drive south of Kona, which is itself a bit of a drive from the airport. Definitely plan on having a car if you're going to stay here or have confidence in hitching with people. I think there may also be a rule against locals using hostels because Annie asked if I was and remarked that I/my name looked like one (true - I am Japanese). read more

There's a mini mart right across the street and some food about a mile walking but be careful on the road, especially at night. My only complaint is that your not really close to anything you can do walking distance. But thats on me for not having a car/planning ahead. read more

Annie upgraded the room during my stay. the location is fabulous because it is bit secluded and not in touristy area, definitely hidden gem in Kona. The condition is also good, feels like living in village unlike the expensive touristy area. I will definitely go back, love this place especially I can heard chicken and bird /frog voice all days. At first glance this kitsch-laden hostel/motel seems a little rundown and haphazard but this is part of its charms. After spending a good chunk of time there I decided that I really liked it and felt safe and comfy in its loving tropical arms. The first night I stayed I checked into the "ladies dorm" which is nothing more than six janky wooden bunks crammed in one medium-sized room. Even at $25-a-night, I don't think I was expecting a women's prison camp but that is what I got. The bathroom and shower are next door, so if you have a problem with incontinence take heed, this ain' t the joint for you. The "big commercial refrigerator" in the "well appointed kitchen" are not exactly as photographed on the website but they were clean and had all the necessary goods to fix yourself up a fine little meal after spending all day with the fishes. You have to mark food with your name so that no one gets itchy fingers but again I didn't have any problem with theft during my visit. After spending a week on the other side of the island I returned to Kona and my other prospect fell through so I ended up returning to PP, this time splurging and getting a private room with shared bath instead of a hostel. Move over Ritz-Carlton, after sharing my space with a bunch of others, my room next to the office seemed downright luxurious. Maybe I had to hear people coming up to the desk and talking about their rental needs but for $50 a night I was willing to deal with it. Pristine room and towels put a smile on my face that was greatly needed after the debacle with my other lodging. The owner is a spitfire, who is prone to lecturing her guests, but her bullying has a caring aspect to it and she ended up becoming friendlier as my visit wore on. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear from them at a discount if you are staying there making it a nice little bonus. On top of everything else they have wireless, which to me almost means more than having a private bath. Some of the other hostels have Internet for around 5 bucks an hour so free wifi makes me do the hula! It's not too far from the airport but you definitely need a car on Kona, since everything seems so far apart. There is a small mini-mart/deli across the street if you are car-less and hitchhiking on the Big Island is definitely not out of the question. read more

I live on the other side of the island in lower Puna, and Pineapple Park is always my first choice when getting away for a mini-vacay on the west side of the island. The owner is an adorable, very sweet lady and is very helpful with any questions. She does hold firm boundaries, but I honor and respect that. I live and work at a retreat center, and I understand first-hand just how much work hospitality is. Housekeeping, building maintenance, and land care are constant jobs that require a high level of dedication. What I love most about Pineapple Park are several things! 1) The spacious lanai/lounge. A breathtaking view of Kealakekua bay! 2) The location. Some folks might prefer the owners' other hostel, Kona Bay, if you are looking to be on Ali'i Drive and have instant access to restaurants and night life. But there is something so peaceful about Kealakekua, and it is only 20-30 minutes from downtown Kona. Quiet and serene. 3) Its overall charm! Pineapple Park gives you that rustic, fun, local feeling that many seek in Hawai'i. 4) I have met some of the loveliest people from all over the world here: Australia, Chile, Germany, Japan. Pineapple Park seems to attract a lot of international travelers, happy interesting people. All in all, I love Pineapple Park. I have stayed here several times over the years and will do so again. Thanks to Annie Chong Park, the owner of this hostel and the Kona Beach Hostel in Kona, I now know how it feels to be marginalized. That's because not only does she not believe that she has to abide by the Americans With Disabilities Act, but what she does believe about disabled people is in it of itself discriminatory and biased. This became revealed to me during a phone call to inquire about the Pineapple Park property. having visited the website I noted that it was a multi-level property. I also noted that there were private rooms with en suite bathrooms and also private rooms with shared bathrooms. I am a partially disabled person who does not use a cane or a walker or any assistive device in my own home. Furthermore when I am the guest at the home of friends I frequently have to share a bathroom and on occasion I've had to climb stairs albeit it is with some difficulty but I'm able to do it. Obviously in a public lodging the best case scenario is to stay in a room that is this close to ground level as possible. With that in mind I made the telephone call to inquire about the location of the rooms at the property. When I called and began to speak to Annie Chong Park I told her I had noticed on the web page that the building had an entrance level with multi-levels behind it. I asked if the private rooms were on the same level as the entrance level because I had a partial disability and I would prefer not to use stairs to which she replied "wouldn't you rather stay at a resort?" That was the first indicator of bias. I said no it was for just one night and that I was more than happy to stay at a hostel to which she replied that no, the en suite private rooms with baths were not on the same ground level as she referred to it. Then I asked about the rooms with the shared bathrooms, and what level were they on and I would be happy to take one of them, when she interjected with me that people like me needed to have our own bathroom. She said people like me belong in resorts . She told me that people like myself don't need to be walking to a bathroom at which point I told her in my own home I'm able to walk to a bathroom. She then challenged this statement, so I explained that I do so unassisted and before I had a chance to even mention that at the homes of friends I do so she cut me off and said "Sweetheart, no" and hung up on me. The implication that was given here was that disabled people are dirty or that because we're disabled that we can't make it to a bathroom in time and is that I'm either going to soil her mattress or have an accident in the hallway on my way to the shared bathroom or I'm somehow not going to be as clean or hygienic in the bathroom. This is blatant discrimination bias. As far as the private rooms that share a bathroom I stayed in such guest houses before that have a common bathroom in between them but I've also stayed in guest houses were you had to walk down the hallway to a bathroom. And it's no different when I'm a guest in someone else's house. This woman over the phone by implication told me that I'm unhygienic and dirty and and not welcome in her guest house. I can't undo what she did on the phone. I do however legally under federal guidelines have recourse about her unwelcome policies towards the disabled in her hostels. I am actively pursuing action on a Federal and Civil level. I can only imagine how truly horrible she would be to someone who was in a wheelchair but able to transfer. Her properties accept walk up guests until 9 p.m. I guess in the case of the disabled they turn away people until 9 p.m. I myself was in a wheelchair for 11 months during a series of surgeries during a time when I didn't walk and it didn't make any difference in the person who I was and I still managed to live in my own house. It's a shame that people have to be so ugly on the inside. read more

OK, so I stayed at the sister hostel downtown (Kona Beach Hostel), and decided to try this one out for my last 2 nights on island, primarily because I had a snorkel with the manta rays trip at the nearby harbor at 9PM. Excellent place, and the staff were great Annie is so nice, and she chatted with a few of us in the evening. Sally was helpful for "things to do on island" and as I listened to her tell new arrivals as she showed them a map on the wall, I really wished I had been here for the start of my trip. Sally had very helpful advice, and connected the lady she was speaking to to two girls who didn't have a car. That was a nice thing to do, and as I had dinner (Made in the fantastic large kitchen we all shared), I learned that there was a lot of connecting of folks who had similar likes. It was very helpful, and some deep friendships were made all around the big porch. It did rain at night, and the staff ran out back and brought in the clothes hanging on the line out back, so folks who had done laundry onsite didn't get their stuff all soaked again- very nice!! Two big washing machines! Bring quarters(they have some, too). I got to rent snorkel gear right in the front lobby; great prices and they have a LOT OF SIZES of fins. It was awesome to find the great fit on fins. This hostel is literally the closest place to rent fins for the best spot: 2-steps beach, and also walking distance to the Captain Cook Monument trail. The staff warned me that it was a super easy to find trail, but that it was hot as heck coming back up, so I should bring lots of water to drink. Well,,,,,, I totally thought they exaggerated, but really its a killer walk uphill very far(an hour a a couple minutes) so I wished I'd listened and hiked later in the day and walked back up in the cooler evening). But anyway, it was walking distance to the trail head, so nice to be so close to this. After my snorkel trip I was late coming back in, and they kept a shower open for me to get cleaned up AND WARMED UP,because it was freezing in the water after the manta rays. I meant to ask them to do that, but they just "remembered" I would be there late, so did it for me. Super nice and I would stay there again, for sure. read more

I'm doing this for some friends who visited here from across the Atlantic. And based on other reviews, which are either very high or very low, it seems to depend on "What is Annie (the manager) feeling like" on that day. My friends have stayed at many hostels around the world. They told me they would NOT stay here again. They are somewhat more mature than many of the residents, and wanted quiet place. And in Captain Cook. They found that this place actually worked for them, as there was refrig. And places to cook, surf web, etc. Annie put them in a "better" location, meaning private bedroom and bath, so that was very good. Apparently, though, she also came around to everyone and told them the rules about stating up after 10 PM, being quiet, etc. but that's not too bad to me. Their accommodations were very basic. And facing the road. When I asked Annie over the phone if they could just SEE the other room available, she said what a pain in the ass these two were and if they didn't like the room she'd given them, they could LEAVE. Finally Isaac showed us the other room and the two agreed that the room Annie had chosen for them was better. For them. But Annie did NOT have to treat them like bothersome tourists. Annie would NOT get a high rating on "Hotel Impossible". BUT.... My friends enjoyed the short walking distance (less than 1mile) to numerous cafés shopping, and other stores, even Greenwell Farms coffee farm. And Kona Coffee History museum. I, personally, would probably like it there. Many young people stay there, and like it. It is a LOCAL Hawaii place. Not a 5-star hotel. It's local. So if you want to experience a LOCAL style Big Island place, stay here. If not, maybe try Manago Hotel just down the road, or Kona Islander Inn, or Uncle Billy's, in town. read more

Once you have your room booked this is a good hostel to stay at but while you are trying to reserve a bed be ready for a negotiation. The owner/ person who most often works the desk is definitely a business women and will seem very serious and stern. However, once you are past the money part she is very sweet and helpful. For the most part I have had good experienced with other guest both being respectful and interesting. Kitchen and laundry are both available and you are fairly near a grocery store. When staying on the Kona side of the island this is where I always stayed because it was in my price point but the reason it got a 3 star from me was because of location. You need a car if you want to go anywhere. Though that may seem normal on the Hilo side I got accustom to being able to go either to a bar or a beach on foot from hostels. Overall, if you need a place to crash I would say this place is safe and comfortable and definitely set up for short term stay (week or less) and will save you major money if you are willing to stay a little outside of the city. read more

One of the nicer hostels I've stayed at. For $25/night we got a clean room with a queen sized bed and a bunkbed with fresh linens. The bathroom is clean and even has toiletries and towels. The patio is a nice environment for chatting, eating, surfing (free wifi!) reading. I do wish they'd turn the tv off. Kona is about a half hour away. But close to the hostel in the other direction is a nice stretch of restaurants, shops and artists galleries worth exploring. Plus, you can rent kayaks and snorkel gear pretty cheaply. Many of the complaints I've read are from people who were possibly expecting a hotel, not a hostel. I stay here often and have recommended it to anyone who visits the Big Island read more

Fantastic Hostel and Annie is one of the best owners I have ever experienced. She is an excellent resource and will give you an insiders knowledge about the island. Just ask her! Clean rooms and nice showers with hot water, fresh local Kona coffee that Annie makes every morning, and a nice open back yard to meet other travelers or lounge about if you need to just relax. I stayed in both the dorm and two different private rooms. The dorm was very clean with sheets and a pillow and fairly quiet. When we passed back through this side of the island we also had one of the private rooms with our own shower that was exceptional and a great price. Much cheaper than the hotel rooms in Kona. There is also a really delicious little Italian restaurant across the way and you can rent kayaks and snorkel equipment from Annie. She also has really nice maps for sale. Her prices are very reasonable and often cheaper for her guests than other businesses in the area. The only downside was that you really need a car if you want to get to much else on this side of the island. The closest grocery/natural food store is a couple miles back toward Kona and the walk would be kinda rough. But other than that, it is a fantastic place and if I ever come back I will definitely stay at Pineapple Park again! read more

So I booked two dorm beds in this hostel through hostelworld and we had a planned balance to pay for a total of 60$. We ended up paying 82$ total for 2 beds in a hostel in an 8 bed dorm! ! That's crazy. And when we asked the woman told us it was some house keeping charges because we were staying here only one night. And that the prepayment we made was only going to hostelworld, which is a lie... When we asked people staying in the hostel, we actually paid more than people staying in a private room! So even though the place is really nice, well located, that's really unacceptable. I've never seen that in any hostel... I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here! read more

Very noisy and stuffy room. The only window was facing a busy road. I asked for a refund and Annie, the owner was very rude. I cancelled through Air B&B and only receive half of my money back. It was a last minute planning and I didn't want to waste $200 on hotels in Kona. The location is about 10 miles south of heart of Kona Town Center where all the shops, bars, restaurants are located. 10 miles in Kona means about 25 minutes of driving, so go figure. This place isn't hard to miss. It has big KAYAK FOR RENT sign and small Rooms for Rent sign next to it. The owner, a bit creepy looking old dude, will greet you and charge you about $30 for one-night coed-room, which I think is a steal. The rooms are okay, but I've stayed in better hostel with cleaner and roomier for under $30. The two star is because this place does poor job on maintenance. It's a bug central. Bring your bug spray and repellent otherwise you're in for a treat. I stayed here for one night and got raped by mosquitoes. That being said, it's serviceable place to stay on your vacation to Kona. The kayak & snorkel rent is a must to Kealakekua Bay and Captain Cook Monument. It's unreal. read more

Annie is awful ! Lyft and Uber do not pick up at airport and Annie told us to go to the other hostel first. Then She stated by yelling at me the office was closing in 30 minutes and if we weren't there we were out of luck. Then when we arrived we couldn't find her. When we finally did she was on the phone sweet as pie telling another customer she would stay open an extra twenty minutes. The information on the website is not up to date and when I told her the information is misleading- she started screaming at me and told me I needed to be a "better traveler" my mom and I were floored by her hostile behavior. The bathrooms are disgusting. And when we got up to take showers in the morning, they were locked till 8:30am. There is NO shuttle to and from the airport and Annie will tell you it only costs $30 to get to airport- More like $60-$70. The "lock boxes" in the rooms do not have locks, you have to ask and maybe Annie will get you one, but only after yelling at you for not being prepared. And one of the boxes in our room was broken. Rachel was a sweetheart and helped my mom and I, but other than that, I would not stay here and tell people to just get an air bnb. Even a local on the island said Annie has a really bad temper and has a monopoly on the island when it comes to the hostels. This was my mom's first hostel experience and I can't wait to take her to the one I went to in Italy. Such a better experience than this ! read more

Had a great experience here, overall. Super clean place! Annie was absolutely great in accommodating my requests. Long story short, was supposed to drive up to the northern part of the island for a meditation retreat, but plans for that were canceled, and I had already checked out of the hotel, which was sold out all weekend. THANK YOU, Annie, for working with me on such short notice! PROS: - Annie is great, and takes good care of the property - Met some great people out in the lodging area/patio from all over the world - Kitchen so you can do your own cooking - Rooms are VERY clean! I loved it. - Free Wi-Fi + Fridge in the room - The character of the place, once you are inside, is really inviting. - Upstairs patio has gorgeous views of the ocean - The private bathroom is also really well kept, nicely decorated, and super clean. CONS: - I had a private room, and even though "quiet hours" are after 10PM, I could still hear people talking really loudly just outside my window. - Kept waking up in the morning because people were slamming doors and yelling. Maybe just a few bad apples, but still something to note. - One of the windows didn't have blinds. I like the room to be completely dark when I sleep. Tried to visit a friend and was approached by the staff member in the photo in a very suspicious way while I was waiting outside on the porch. When I told her I was waiting for a friend she asked me if I knew him (my friend). I responded yes and then she proceeded to tell my friend and I that we are not allowed to go inside. He has paid for a room to stay here and is being treated like some sort of stranger. They proceeded to talk back and forth as you can see in the attached photo. Three stars is a little generous, but I'm trying to grade my hostel standards. American hostel standards. Rooms: I spent one night in an $80 single room (only thing in all of Kona under $200 that night), and one night in a dorm for $30. Slept better in the later because the noise level is more about the people in the place than the room. Being in a room affords no protection from noise. The first night I was awakened by people going to bed or arriving back or something at several times through the night. The second night it was every time someone went into the outside fridge for a beer. The rooms themselves are rundown, but relatively spacious. Beds were reasonably comfortable and partially made (which is much appreciated). Common areas: Beachside backpacker style. Nothing looks or feels new. There is a smoking area, a common shower and toilet area, and several sitting or dining areas. Kitchen has bad coffee in the morning with fake creamer (which they try to make a selling point?). There are several fridges, but only access to an outside sink and beer fridge after 10pm (which is, unfortunately for some, right next to a dorm room). The real kitchen had 1 spoon and no other utensils that I could find. Plenty of mugs, plates, etc. Never cooked there, so no idea how busy it gets at night if people are trying to use the kitchen. Bathrooms: Yikes. Immediately grossed out by the sign in the shower that reprimanded guests to stop ejaculating in the shower and clogging up the pipes. Gross. Otherwise, things were, again, rundown but relatively clean. Warm water. Flushing toilets. One or two sinks, but didn't seem to be a back-up issue. WIFI: Solid, no issues. The crowd: A mix. Some older folks who felt like burned-out hippy types wandering around the islands for the last decade or so. An occasional person seemed to be getting ready to go to work (?), and the young and dumb early-20 backpacker crowd that likes to come in late, drink loudly, and go to bed noisily even later. Heard the best conversation at 11:30pm - "dude, picking up bar chicks is totally different than picking up hostel chicks..." You can hear the young minds coming into their own on their big international trips of discovery.... Value: The single room feels steep. Possibly why it was the last open room at the place. Dorm beds are standard for the area. Location: Middle of nowhere? Technically it's close to a "great" snorkeling place, but it's a ways from town and not particularly close to anything for late night (i.e. 9:30pm or later) eating and drinking. Basically, like much of Kona, you really need a car to get around. There is enough parking in their lot or on the street nearby. Overall: Generally, not a fan. Compared to hostels I've stayed in abroad, this place feels overpriced for what you get. But that generally summarizes Kona (and probably all of Hawaii) for me; for those who dig the island lifestyle, this might be right up your alley. read more

My husband and I stopped here to check out the rooms because we stay in hostels all over. We did not know that there was a hostel somewhat close to Kailua-Kona. So we stopped by, and asked for prices and if possible to see a room. At any and every hostel and or hotel (high end or low end) we have been able to do so. She said they were all occupied. That is fine, no biggy. Then we asked how many rooms were there. In case we needed to call in advance. She said she could not tell us that information. Ummm.. Alright. She gave us a card and said everything we needed to know was on the website. Then my husband said that was strange and that at least most people give rates or amount of room numbers. She just said everything you need to know is on the website. My husband asked why couldn't she just give us information . Then she said " We don't give out information" and he asked "well what kind of information is there" (on the website) and she said "everything that needs to be there. It was such a strange, unwelcome, experience. If someone won't even talk about prices or any general information that's a bad sign. She said "I don't want anyone talking about the hostel." I called and she gave me a reasonable rate but when we arrived she tried to hike it up to $125 a night. Ridiculous price for a hostel. Go to manago, they keep their prices honest. read more

A great comfortable, clean, and relaxing hostel. Annie the owner is a great character, she works hard to keep this place running tight! She will be the first one to tell you, that english is her second language and that if she comes off rude, its just her accent. My girlfriend and I love her! There is plenty of space here to find your own little nook, and take a load off. If you feel like cooking there is a nice, clean, and accommodating kitchen. Wanna get down on some BBQ, feast your eyes on the bad ass grill! The room was super private and totally worth the value! Would def stay here again! Enjoy! read more

Annie was able to squeeze my husband and I in for a room at the last minute after an unfortunate air bnb experience. We stayed in a private room with a private bathroom. Clean and simple -- which is all we needed! Room even came with a fan and the sound of a chorus of frogs (I thought they were birds) outside. Woke up and loved the view from the deck. Annie was super helpful in directing us for a good breakfast place and for some nearby hikes. Would stay here again! read more

Loved this hostel! I made my reservations online, got a response from Annie and she even gave me tips for hostel options on Maui. Once there I found the rooms, bathrooms & showers clean and the linens washed. No bug problems for me. And the outside area was fantastic and really encourage people to meet and chat. This is a large hostel a little south of Kona, great if you want to escape the touristy part of town. The price is great and the place is pretty clean. However, the "please don't masturbate in the shower, put drains are getting clogged" gave me pause. The atmosphere here is nice, with people down to chill at night. read more

There are no locks on the bedrooms and no lock on the front door. When I asked about this I was told only hostel guests come inside and there are cameras. Just be advised. Outdoor toilet and shower. read more
